This was the first year the Beat the Blerch race came to Sacramento, CA and 4 running distances were available (5k, 10k, half, and full). Race: This was my 3rd half marathon ever and thought everything was very well done, especially for its inaugural year. The course was very scenic and took you by the river, across bridges (3x), through downtown, through parks, and a bike trail, with the finish in Raley Field. No loops in the course and relatively flat overall, just some minor slopes. Meeting "The Oatmeal": I picked up my bib packet Friday at REI and got him to sign both my bib and the "Terrible Reasons why I run long distances" book. He would alternate between taking pictures or refusing pictures. If you didn't get a picture, he seemed to try to compensate by drawing an extra doodle for you :). He happened to be refusing photos by the time i reached him but got a cool horse drawing! After the half on race day, I waited in-line to meet him again to get him to sign my medal ribbon and got a picture this time! Organization: Thought everything was very well organized starting with bib pick up. Plenty of signs to direct people and there were staff/volunteers in blerch costumes ready to field questions/concerns. Race day parking was easy as well (LOVE the FREE parking btw!) at Raley Field. The parking was literally right by the start line too! Plenty of signs, cones, sticker markers on ground, and appropriate mile markers throughout the course. Aid stations were fantastic with electrolytes, water, cake, nutella, couches, and other goodies. The Bling: Fantastic Blerch medal. Especially like how the medal ribbons (along with the bib and race shirts) were personalized according to which distance you ran. Thought it was also a nice touch that each medal had plastic wrap around the metal portion to protect (I've had other medals get dinged when they clank against each other in the boxes). Areas for Improvement: (1) Free photos were advertised as part of registration, but I did not see many photographers at all. Saw some start line photograhers and at the finish line, but didn't really see any throughout the course or in the finish area after we got our medals. (2) The snacks and drinks right at the finish line was crazy. At the time I finished, it looked like the water table (the very first table runners get to after crossing the finish line) was the bottleneck - cups kept running out and it took time to fill cups/water bottles with the water dispensers. Every other race I have done gave out bottled water or bottled powerade at the finish line, which really speeds up the process. (3) Not really an issue for me as I typically run the whole race without needing a bathroom, but I noticed there were almost no bathroom opportunities throughout the course. Overall though, this was a very fun and unique race. I would still highly recommend to others!

Around mile 4.5, you get an awesome view of the State Capitol

The volunteers are friendly and trying to be helpful but lack the knowledge or experience to make things happen with any efficiency. This was coupled with long lines. The wait to check in was 45 minutes. The wait for a locker was 10 the wait for a hose to spray off the mud was 20+. These events are expensive and it is clear that Spartan race means to squeeze every dime out of you. $15-$30 for lockers, $150 for entry, $30 for photos and the list goes on. The obstacles are fine, the only redeeming quality is the other racers who all seem to be there to get through this together. People were happy to help each other and that was cool to see.

It definitely was the perfect landscape for obstacles and trail running. For the most part, the event was well organized and they had plenty of volunteers throughout the entire race, to help navigate and cheer you on! Even as you arrive, you're directed to where to park and there are signs everywhere for checking in, restrooms, food and drinks, etc. The space for the race was ideal since it had everything you need for a spartan race, like trails through the woods, uneven grounds, hills and steep inclines, and yes, they even bulldozed some holes for the muddy pits that's part of the three obstacles where you get dirty. There are three different races that occur during the weekend the race takes place: Beast, a 21k with 30 obstacles, Super, a 10k with 25 courses or the Spring, a 5k with 20 obstacles. It was definitely a fun and exhilarating experience that I'll never forget! It was also cool to see how many people visited the Seattle area, just for this race that takes place every year, all over the world. Everyone was very friendly and loved the encouragement from fellow spartans and the volunteers and staff, cheering you on. I can't believe I'll say this, but yeah, I'd do it again.

This was such a fun and well-planned event, we really enjoyed ourselves! I am always happy to see a course that isn't overcrowded and a start without long lines and sufficient port-a-potties (essential!). There were so many helpful volunteers around and so many people trying to feed you cake, much appreciated. The race shirts/medals/photo booths/signs all had lovely oatmeal artwork which alone is worth the price of admission. There were so many fun costumes and the blerches and couches along the course give you a nice chuckle. The only downside is that the course has lots or gravel which makes for some discomfort at times, but I would still do this race again for sure. One tip: purchase the parking pass, it is well worth it and you get to park right next to the start. I heart Beat the Blerch!! Thanks for a fun run!!

A couple people in our group were originally from Seattle & a few were familiar with The Oatmeal (I wasn't) so it seemed like a good fit. It was so fun! Most people in our group are generally pretty competitive runners, but given the nature of this race all but one decided to run for "fun." Most of us (including me) did the half marathon along withe a couple of 10K'ers (they also do have a full marathon option). Before I get into the fun stuff I'll just point out some race logistics. The half marathon (as well as 10K) is an out and back. It's a gradual up hill along a trail, so coming back it's a gradual down hill. The setting is gorgeous (Carnation is about 45 minutes outside of Seattle) with lots of greenery. I would say the race itself is a less competitive than most big organized races like this (which totally makes sense) with people of all different abilities. The one woman in our group who did take it seriously was the 2nd overall female and in the top 20 overall (there was over 800 people who did the half). She said she's never finished so high in a race that big. Okay...now for the fun! -BURRIDONUT (sp?): I had one before the race (they were also available after). Get in line, take a flour tortilla, get a grilled donut from a local bakery (chocolate or coconut), and then your toppings. They had bacon bits, ranch, gummy bears, marshmallows, and other toppings that I can't remember. Wrap it all together and enjoy! It's a good thing I wasn't taking the race seriously because I DEFINITELY felt this rumbling in my belly as a jogged. Also, the grill they were using for the donuts was nice to stand by to keep warm. -Cake!: Yep, there's cake at the aid stations! And not just store bought grocery cake. I can't remember the name of the local bakery who provided a TON of sheet cake, but it was really delicious & moist. The bakery also provided the donuts for the burridonuts -Nutella sandwiches: Also available at aid stations. I had to have one to say I ran while eating nutella sandwich, but like the burridonut it did a number on my stomach and I only had one at the the first aid station -Blerches (and a Sasquatch!): These guys jumped out every now and then to lighten the mood and make for a fun experience. The location for this race is nice! There's a large barn in Tolt Macdonald park where lots of goodies were available after the race. Also, the swag bags were pretty nice. In addition to a foam blerch & candy, all half marathoners get a really nice long sleeve half-zip tech running shirt w/the race logo. I'd totally do this race again!

http://www.lakesammamishhalf.com/…read more Lake Sammamish Half Marathon is probably the easiest run from Evergreen Trail Runs. I thought this would be a good experience before I try more of their runs. I thought the race event itself was well organized and all the volunteers who involved were very nice and friendly. This race started in Marymoor Park in Redmond and ended in Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah. And, there's shuttle (school buses) dropping participants back to Marymoor after the race. That's very nice. In addition, Gear check in from Marymoor and Gear check out from Lake Sammamish. I was able to change to dry t-shirt after the race. I really appreciated that! If you are looking forward to having your PR, this is a race for you. I would say this trail is all the way flat. My last 4 half-marathons I had time around 2 hours 10-15 mins but this time, I was able to make it under 2 hours. I was very happy with it. In fact, a lot of first time half-marathoners were very happy with their first one! Highly recommended if you are looking for your first half-marathon to run!!

This was very organized and the shirts and metals were great quality (although be warned that the shirts sizes always run small for this one). The shuttles at the end that take you back to the start were very easy to use and left often. The density of runners was great, not too crowded but enough that you could pace with people. They also had some pacers running which is always much appreciated! My only negative on this run is that darn back and forth they do in the parking lot before the finish. I admit this year was much better that the 2013 course which had a painful number of repeats but when you are at mile 12 it is torturous to be looping around. I always wonder why they don't add that mileage on at the front at Marymoor instead? Still a great race and definitely worth it!

I remember when they use to be like $40 and for both of my kids to get a Dizzy Pass it was $140 which is crazy work. I will say it's worth it to make sure they can do a ton of rides, but still. I feel like they added some rides to Sillyville this year which is always a bonus. My kids had such a blast and they did basically every ride. We were smart in terms of food and packed them lunches because they never end up wanting to eat any actual food from the fair so when we do buy them a $20 meal, it goes to waste. So pro tip - pack your kiddos their own food and cut that cost! My husband and I went back for a date night a week or so after taking the kids so that we could check out the new 1900 Food Hall and Rooftop Bar. The new food choices are good additions - we tried the sandwich spot and the new Asian spot. Both were decent, but next year I definitely want to try the Seattle Dog style corndog. The rooftop bar is a VIBE! Especially at night. They did an awesome job with the space. It's pretty big, with lots of different seating options. Bartenders were nice and tried their best to get through the very long line. Prices were shockingly not bad for the fair and were comparable to a regular bar's prices. Overall it was another great year at the fair and we'll be excited when it rolls around next year!
