By a college student's standard, it must be awesome but if you're expecting mind-blowing kimchi fried rice, I would say pass on this. They used white rice and subpar kimchi. The kimchi flavor was clearly evident but it wasn't as spicy or seasoned as most traditional Korean restaurants make. The egg was overly cooked (over medium) and I appreciate my eggs over easy moreso to mix the yolk into the hearty kimchi rice. The beef was also very overcooked and tough. It was literally dark brown, borderline blackened. Don't get the beef lol. Davis' Open Rice Kitchen (non-Korean/Asian restaurant) makes a mad kimchi fried rice for a cheaper price and bigger portions, comparatively to Berkley's Bear's. In Korean the name is Bear "Boon-Shik" (which is a more general casual type of eatery) vs. "Ramen House" Things I've tried: Bear Special Ramen: ramen with chicken, mushrooms, and veggies like sprouts, zuchinni, onion, diakon. Noodles are made from instant bricks. Broth is a secret blend of mysterious powders from containers in the corner of the counter. From how my tongue felt, one of the white powders thrown in was MSG. 2 stars for the nice mix of toppings Gook su's: same powdered broths as ramens but with fresher flour noodles. Bonus points for in-house made noodles. 3.5 stars Kimchee Fried Rice w/ Spam: Probably my favorite dish here. Nice amount of heat. Tasty spam. Fried egg w/ runny yolk. 4- stars Jja Jang Myun: Same fresh noodles as the gook su dishes. Sauce tasted a bit off and on the thin side. Bear's Ramen House is one of the places I will miss after I officially graduate from Cal and move away. It is located right in Durant Square (or what students refer to as Asian Ghetto). I usually order the Mushroom Fried Noodle/Rice or the Kimchi Fried Noodle/Rice with Spam. I prefer the noodles over the rice though. Both come with an egg right on top and cost about $7-8. Eat it when it's fresh! Like Ava S. says, the quality of the food really depends on who is cooking that day. I am most satisfied with the food when the lady who owns the store is cooking. I think her son and a non-Asian woman is usually working the store now, but not always. The owner is seriously the nicest and sweetest lady ever! You can even CALL IN ahead of time to place your order if you're on the run. If you want to dine-in, I must warn you that it is pretty small. The HYPE is not all it is cracked up to be. Clearly the people that have reviewed this place may not have ever had a true ramen experience... This is a Korean Ramen house.. and the menu is not helpful at all. There are no descriptions of what each dish is and contains so you have to sit there and ask the cook what each one contains. We ordered the New Year and Post Sticker Ramens.. The Potstickers are not fresh/hand-made in any way they literally come from a frozen bag. The ramen noodles look and taste as if they come from the 10 cent Ramen packs you get from the grocery store. There's no flavor to the broth for the New Year Ramen.. and they do not carry sriracha sauce, chili paste, limes, mint leaves.. etc. Luckily 3 doors down you can nab a homemade chili paste that is pretty epic.. not the pho place - they do have sriracha, not the korean bbq place - they apparently keep sriracha behind the counter for employees only, but the Thai place is where it's at for the freshly made chili paste to add to your ramen! Unbelieveable that they have nothing to liven it up a bit. The broth for the Pot Sticker Ramen had a surprisingly rich and savory flavor.. that should be their go-to broth.. but everything else was the same. frozen potstickers.. etc. Very few of their dishes come with the boiled egg that I've experienced with all my other typical ramen dishes.. I have also tried Bear Ramen's kimchi pancake and spicy squid over rice at the recommendation of my friends and they were also really tasty. Seriously, I love this place. During lunch and dinner hours there will usually be a wait here because only the woman and maybe one other person will be working. That being said, I definitely do NOT mind waiting for a few extra minutes to get my Kimchi Fried Noodle. In college, my roommate and I would come here once every 1-2 weeks to get our fix of this dish and while we waited, we would cross over to Quickly's to get a drink to go with dinner (Me, a jasmine milk green tea, no pearls. Her, a regular pearl milk tea). Nothing beats this combo. After graduating, I realized that the thing I missed most about Berkeley was the Kimchi Fried Noodle at Bear Ramen. Honestly, it's the best thing ever and I literally feel myself craving for it at least once a week. The noodles are really "Q" (I'm not sure how to say this in English...) and the amount of kimchi plus the level of spice is just perfect for me. I usually get it with spam but you're free to substitute it with beef, chicken, or pork. The kimchi fried rice is amazing too but I personally like noodles better. Their ramen is pretty good too although the ramen noodles are closer to your typical cup noodle ramen (Korean style) not the Japanese style ramen. I really like their ddeokbokki (spicy Korean rice cakes) too but be prepared to take the heat (or ask her to use less spice). Also, don't plan on eating here. The place is insanely small and there are always students waiting for their food there. It's nicer to bring your food back to your dorm or apartment and eat while watching a good show. My friend went for the egg ramen and I ended up ordering the kimchi ramen. The total came out to an even $6.50 for the both of us. We opted to sit outside because seating is pretty tight inside and because it was a nice, sunny day to soak up some sun and get our Vitamin D fix. The soup, ramen, and kimchi were all delicious. I really enjoyed the texture of the ramen - it's not of that cheap cup noodle quality. I added some chili pepper powder to mine to give it that extra edge. The three elements combined well with each other, and the cold weather made it taste that much better. Just one small complaint, the ramen to kimchi ratio was way off. It seriously needs some work. I ended up with lots of kimchi halfway into my meal. I could've bought extra ramen for $1, but I didn't think it'd be necessary. It was just a minor setback - I was still completely satisfied. Quick tips: (1) If it's your first time or if you're indecisive, try the items that have the "thumbs up" on their menu! (2) Add extra ramen to give your meal that balance it desperately needs! I came here on a Saturday night at 10:45 pm thinking that it closes at 11:30pm, but they actually close earlier at 11pm for the summer. I was devastated that I ordered the seaweed ramen because I think I would have enjoyed the gyeoksoo (I think I'm spelling it correctly). The gyeoksoo has udon noddles which I think I would have enjoyed more because it's made in house. The ramen reminds me of something that I can get out of the instant ramen packages. What I enjoy here is the broth, I loved how flavorful it was and how the lady was very accommodating when I came in 15 minutes before closing. read more

Good stuff! Located inside the asian ghetto. Came here after classes with a friend and we ended up choosing this place because she recommends the kim chi fried noodle. I ended up ordering the kim chi fried rice with chicken. Service was fast but the seating is very limited inside. We sat outside eating our warm food and hot tea on a foggy afternoon. Awesome ambiance. The fried rice was good. Not too spicy but just right. I tried a bit of my friends kim chi noodle with spam and I liked it more than my rice. My favorite place to eat at Asian Ghetto!!! I usually eat here when I'm pretty busy because the food comes out pretty quickly (except when it's packed on some nights). The Kimchi Fried Rice with Spam is the best!!! It's better than kimchi fried rice from any other place... it's better than my mom's (sorry mom). I don't know how they make it so tasty because it's so simple. I just wish they gave us more. You should probably take it to go because there is not much space inside. Don't come here too often but when I do it's usually for the kimchi fried rice + spam. Ambiance: On the smaller side so they usually only have a few bar seats. Aside from that you can just sit outside at the tables in the food court. Food: It's not the best but not the worst. They give you a decent portion for the price and can't really complain since it's so close to campus. Very filling especially when you're in a rush to class or for a quick meal.
