Really cheap food - perfect for a poor student. The best thing to order is the spam kimchi fried rice - if you're craving kimchi fried rice this is the place to go. It even comes with a sunny side up fried egg - ahhh everything I love about kimchi fried rice. Ironically, I'd recommend staying away from the ramen. The broth isn't that tasty and the noodles are definitely packaged top ramen noodles - you can get that at home! Seating is really limited both inside and out. If it's crowded, get it to go! read more

This place has always been one of my more favorite places in Asian Ghetto (durant food court). Before you go: Cash only! The food is great and tasty! I always end up getting the kimchi fried noodle with chicken. This last time i went, it was after i havn't gone in a long time. They give little meat compared to usual, not sure if that is how they are now or it was just that one time so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hope it was just one time thing. Their egg is always cooked well as well, adds a nice touch to my food. Another common dish is the kimchi fried rice, and both fried dishes with spam as their choice of meat (but I don't eat spam, so can't comment on it myself). There isnt much space INSIDE. So I would say its always a good idea to plan on taking it to go and eating it outside or at home. Just a fair warning for those coming in larger groups! read more

My favorite kimchi fried rice place around the area! Kimchi fried rice is pretty easy to make yourself but when I'm too lazy to make it I come here to satisfy my craving. I like the kimchi fried rice here much better than Spoon Kitchen Bistro which is closer to my home. The kimchi fried rice here has a perfect ratio of rice to kimchi to spam. It's also not too wet or dry. Bear Ramen is basically a hole in the wall located in Asian Ghetto. This place doesn't have much seating but the staff is quick to make your food and get you out the door. There's also plenty of seating outside. This place is cash only so don't forget to stop by an ATM!! I only wish it wasn't so close to Cal cause street parking is impossible to find around the area during the school year. The sucky parking situation discourages me from coming here more often. read more

I came here because my friends really hyped up the Kimchee fried rice with spam and egg. I really wanted to enjoy it. But the atmosphere just totally killed it for me. We sat outside in the square and there were pigeons everywhere... bugs flying and just plain unclean. So that was in my head... then i eat the rice and... i don't know... it really just didn't hit a spot. It seemed super oily, the Spam was a little gross, didnt seem like the typical SPAM brand spam, if that makes sense.... and the egg... more oil. But i think it is just me. My brother was with us and he LOVED IT, ate the whole thing up. I will have to try this place again to make a final decision because i could have gone on an off day? read more

My absolute FAVORITE place to get kimchi fried rice. I think that around 80% of my visits to Asian Ghetto end up taking me to Bear's Ramen because I just can't get enough of the rice. Can't say much about anything else because I've never actually tried any other dishes, but their ramen seems to be pretty popular as well. Cons: only takes cash. sometimes rice can be a little too oily. read more

This is korean food at it's simplest but it's good, it's open late and quick. The owner is really nice and friendly. Pros: 1. Food is good and comes fast 2. Open late Cons: 1. Small, don't really expect to be able to sit or eat there. You'll probably have eat it outside on the benches or take it to go. read more

I went here and got shrimp ramen. It was super tasty, better with sriracha piled on top of course. They let you venmo if you don't have cash which is nice. There is sitting inside and outside, pretty limited but worth it if you can grab a seat in the sun outside. I definitely want to come back here and try their mushroom fried rice. The gourmet ghetto forever remains one of my favorite food gems of Berkeley. read more

Very good ramen ! ! Review for ramen bowl only. I believe they have changed their times and open @ 6pm / nevertheless always hits the spot on a chilly night read more

The noodles they use for the ramen here are the same exact noodles from the instant ramen packages. Though the noodles are common, everything in the soup was excellent. I had the "Beef Ramen" and the "Bear Special Ramen". I can assure you that there are way better ramen places out ther. read more

This very tiny hole in the wall makes very good ramens. I had the beef ramen and it was good, although I wished there were more food! The service was friendly, but the service wasnt fast. I came here on a thursday night and it was pretty busy. If you eat inside the place, goodluck because it is very tiny with limited seats and room. Also had the potstickers, which were awesome read more

cheap tasty korean food kimchee fried noodles with spam The noodles are machined pulled fresh which provides a very chewy but firm texture. The spiciness is just right not too hot not too bland. The sunny side fried egg adds an extra touch. 4/5 They only have 8 seats in the small room so getting to go is a better bet. All the dishes are under $9 and they also have self serve tea and water. I would come back just to try their other things or just get the kimchee noodles again. PS ramen is packaged here so you can probably make it yourself at home. Get the rice or fried noodle instead. read more

Kim chi fried noodles are awesome! Kim chi fried rice is also good.

I had a serious kimchi fried rice addiction after trying it for the first time. But since its so cold these days, I've switched over to geting the bear ramen special. The soup always hits the spot and keeps me nice and warm. Overall, a small cozy place to get some great and affordable Korean food! read more

Dear future and current Bears: get the kimchi fried rice. Get the kimchi ramen - on days when you think you want pho, skip Vietnam Village and come here. I graduated many moons ago and still crave the kimchi-anything here. For these 2 dishes alone, give stars! Pre and post Greek concert, this hits the spot. To go only. Or else you'll feel like "that" old person hanging around a college joint. read more

I've come here quite a few times throughout my college years, and I've always gotten the Champong Ramen. It has some vegetables and some seafood, and it's spicy! So good on a cold day. The noodles are pretty good themselves, and the soup isn't bad. It's a little on the pricier side in comparison with the food around it, but the food is pretty good with decent quantity as well. There's also self-serve tea if you want it! read more

They made me wait 30 minutes after they messaged me saying my order is ready. And then they got my order wrong. Food wasn't bad though

Bear's Ramen House and I have a love/hate relationship. I LOVE their kimchi fried rice with spam. I LOVE their gooksu (when they don't run out). I LOVE their prices. I think they hate me, though, because I'm not Korean. But I can live with that, I guess. read more

Kimchi fried rice is really good here! However, I was very disappointed at how little spicy Korean rice cake I got in my order....that made me a little sad. It was delicious Korean rice cake...but...I seriously had like ten cakes in there. I don't know if she just hated me that day or what. Foods good, portion size that particular time I went was super bad...so I have some mixed feelings. read more

I would never have found this on my own, but this was where my friend wanted to stop to pickup food on our way to the Greek Theater. So we each got a Kimchee Fried rice, and ate it on our walk up. You get what you expect. Decent price. Cash only. Quick service. read more

please note that this review is solely based on my experience with their KimChi Spam Rice. It's definitely, imo, the best item on their menu. Very filling and cooked perfectly. The rice was nicely separated and absorbed the flavors of the kimchi paste. It was great that the kimchi was cut into small bite sized pieces The own lady and one helper are the sole operators of the store. I always am awed by how efficient they are because orders come out quickly. I have heard however that their ramen are not great, which makes me not understand the store's name if their ramen is just from instant ramen. So when you come, mainly try to kimchi spam fried rice. The mushroom one is good too read more

Kimchi fried rice with Spam - 5 stars Sujaebi - 2 stars Lady in the back - 5 stars Honestly, my fault for ordering something like Sujaebi at a place like that. Sujaebi is a soup made from seaweed and dried anchovy stock with lumps for flour mix. Almost like a Korean Gnocchi. The place was clearly a cheap fried rice and ramen kind of place and I was fool enough to order something that should only be ordered even at specialty places in LA's K-town with caution. I usually don't like Korean fried rice because... well, they use Korean rice and it's just too sticky for me when it comes to fried rice. It tends to come out greasy rather than soft and buttery like the way I like them. But Spam is a miracle meat that makes rice and kimchi come together like pb and j. Add an egg sunny side up and you got yourself a yolk covered treat of spicy, greasy, salty, and mellow all at the same time. There's also something that ruins kimchi fried rice, it's raw kimchi. The kimchi in fried rice should be fermented even longer than the kind you eat because the spices have to soak into the cabbage or else you'll get white cabbage in your rice. This place definitely uses aged kimchi but not so aged that it's sour. Good kimchi is hard to come by, so go here for real kimchi the way it should be. Also, I didn't have the ramen but I can tell just by looking at the kitchen that it'll be good because they prepare stock instead of using water. They know the secret to making Korean instant ramen taste like a real soup dish is a deeper stock and not just extra ingredients. read more

One of the lesser populated eateries in the Asian Ghetto, it used to be one of my favorites. I used to come here with a friend all the time for their curry rice. The sauce was rich and tasty and the portion was very generous. I've also tried the kimchi fried rice and the curry ramen. The kimchi fried rice was ok. I'm not a huge kimchi fan so I don't think I can review it fairly but I found it to be too sour and too salty. The curry ramen was good, but not good enough to get again. The price of all the entrees is a little higher compared to the other restaurants in the area, but the cost seems justified when you see that it's just one little old Korean lady (who's very nice, btw) and sometimes another helper running the place. I sort of stopped coming here after freshman year though because 1) I think they changed how they make the curry rice and 2) I discovered other eateries that became favorites for me. Still, I do miss that curry and the quaint little ramen house. read more

I had the Mushroom Fried Noodle, which was REALLY good, but because there was so much flavor, it became really difficult to eat. I can imagine it would have been delicious as leftovers, but I was going to be out all day so I had to throw it all away. What a pity... The egg that came on my noodles was a little overcooked compared to everyone else's, so the consistency is a little off, but it's nothing major. From what I've heard, even though this place is called "Bear's Ramen House," you should stay away from the ramen. Stick with the fried rice/noodle dishes and you'll have a yummy meal. read more

KIMCHI UDON SOUP WITH SHRIMP! KIMCHI FRIED RICE! I've died and gone to comfort-food HEAVEN! Possibly under new management, don't let this spot in the college-kid-inundated "Asian Ghetto" fool you -- It's packed with flavor, charm, quality ingredients, and a beautiful, kind owner who'll make it JUST how you like it, and spice it to taste with a smile. They're open late and in the best location near Telegraph to find parking. read more

The Honest Truth: This place is pretty good. Solid choice at Asian Ghetto. The Kimchi fried rice is great. Ironically the ramen isn't anything special. I'd say the gooksoo is a better option. The service is always good. The Details: I always enjoy coming to this place. I always order the kimchi fried rice and I'm always satisfied. However, there isn't much else I'll order. The ramen isn't that great and I would rather make some instant noodles at home. The Gooksoo is decent and the other thing I order is the spicy pork over rice. The quality is typical Asian Ghetto quality, which isn't bad. The price is around the same 6-7 dollar amount. The workers are nice and they give you a fair amount of food. Theres no place to eat inside, so get it to go and eat somewhere else! read more

Omnomnom. Kimchee ramen with tofu. Nothing that's mind blowing, just good, solid ramen. I keep meaning to try their fried rice, but I always wind up here when I have a ramen jones... Gets super busy, so there can be a bit of a wait, but it's still fairly fast for a quick lunch or take out. Cash only. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Bear's Ramen House as I thought it would be another typical Asian Ghetto restaurant, but I actually enjoyed my meal. I ordered the kimichi fried rice with beef (topped with a sunny side up egg) and it was homey and flavorful. The portions are also fairly generous so if you are not that hungry, you can probably split into two meals. I also tried a bite of the kimchi fried noodles and it also tasted super delicious! I will be sure to order that next time. Ironically, I heard that the one thing NOT to get here is ramen, so beware of that. Minus one star for the cramped seating, but otherwise, I highly recommend this place. read more

Fried noodles with pork, kimchi, and an egg on top seriously made my day! Sit at their counter (seats...8 or so? can't remember, I was too busy stuffing my face) or take it to go. You would never guess in this little alley of eateries that this yum-bomb of noodle and rice goodness would be here. read more

When I lived nearby, I would come here like once a week. It was a staple in my diet, since I never used my kitchen. I came here for take out by myself and also to grab dinner with friends. Food is pretty good. I was never disappointed with the food and it always hit the spot. It is definitely good ramen, although nothing fancy. Also, I really liked their broth! I've tried a few of their different ramen soups: egg (what I usually got), vegetarian, and chicken ramen. Prices are always cheap (~$6-8) for a good portion of ramen that always filled me up! Service can be pretty slow. There is mainly one lady and another person who usually helps her. Both "dine in" and take out can take about 15 minutes or more. Also if you've never been here, there's minimal seating inside. And there is a common space you can sit right outside, but it tends to be crowded (and homeless people might bother you and ask you for money). read more

I've come here at least 30 times over the span of 4 years and it has never failed to impress me. I always order the kim chee fried rice and the balance between kim chee and rice is perfect! It's not too spicy and the kim chee has a nice bite and crunch to it. This is topped off with a perfectly cooked sunny-side up egg which brings the whole dish together. One of the best kim chee fried rice dishes I've had in my life! read more

Bears Ramen House - Kimchee fried rice with tofu - Korean Near Me - Berkeley, California

AHHH BEAR RAMEN! The best place to get ramen in Berkeley! Not only is their ramen really good they also have a lot of other really yummy dishes. At first impressions there isn't very many vegetarian options but you just need to talk to them and they can substitute items. My favorite was the mushroom fried rice with the fried egg on top soooo good. And the little Korean woman who works here is really cute. -1 star because the place is tiny and there is never room to sit inside and I never liked eating at the outside food court area. read more

Kimchi fried rice with tofu whenever I was hungry. Fishcake gooksoo when I wasn't feeling well. Doobukee because there wasn't another place in walking distance to get it. read more

I love Bear's Ramen House; almost lived off it freshman and sophomore year of college when Cafe 3 just wouldn't do. As a result, I think I've tried at least half the items on the menu. I went back recently and it brought back nostalgic memories. Some of my favorites are the mushroom fried rice + egg (or gooksoo, or noodles), the Champong ramen, the spicy rice cake and fish cake, and the pork and kimchi over rice. Yes, the kimchi fried rice is very popular, but I think a lot of the other items are the menu are just as great, if not better! The Korean lady behind the counter (is she the owner?) is always very sweet and friendly, and one time she gave me a couple extra rice cakes because she forgot about my order. I suppose being Korean might also get you some extra ones too. They are very efficient and most importantly, clean. Have you been to some of the other places in Asian Ghetto? Very questionable! The prices are decent and I always leave happy! read more

At all hours of the day (and night), I could always rely on Kimchi Fried Rice for a solid dish. Toss in some spam and throw a fried egg on top and you have a winner. Prices are great for students (and non-students). If you're at Asian Ghetto and can't figure where to go among the mass of stores, you can always count on this place for a great meal. 5 stars read more

I've heard so much about this tiny place, so I thought it was about time I give it a try. Once I went into the place, it quickly became obvious that this cramped place had very limited seating. There are tables outside, but those also get taken up pretty quickly. Since so many of my friends raved about their ramen I decided to try that. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. They give you an abundant amount of noodles and the noodles were soft, but the soup was really bland. It was almost flavorless. The price was decent, but the food wasn't that great. Definitely disappointed! Note: This place only accepts cash. read more

I go for the kimchi fried rice! I don't live in Berkeley anymore, but I always crave the kimchi fried rice here. I get tired of most of the food in Asian ghetto, but this never gets old for me :) read more

Kimchi fried rice with spam! That's the only thing the honey and I have ever ordered from here, but some of the rice plates look like they might also be good. I'm a bit bewildered as to why anyone would order ramen from this place, as they use dried, packaged ramen, add kimchi and other fixings to it, and charge $5-6 for it. But, the kimchi fried rice is fantastic! Sure, at almost $7 for one serving I could buy enough of the ingredients to make several more batches of the stuff, but the combination of chewy, short grain rice, bibimbop sauce, kimchi, sesame oil, spam, and sunny-side-up egg that they put together here is so much better than what I can make at home. Try it! read more

Yum! I always get some form of ramen here and I love how: A) It comes in its own "tupperware" container when you order to go B) SO DELICIOUS C) There is so much food that no matter how hungry I am, I cannot finish it all at once and always end up eating the remaining half for another meal D) i see the same people working all the time (the korean lady who owns the place & the hispanic lady). they're always pretty friendly and they make my food fast! read more

This was my favorite restaurant when I lived in Berkeley. I started out getting the Kimchee Spam Fried Rice (YUM!) but started getting the Kimchee Spam Fried Noodles (EVEN MORE YUM!) when it first became available. I went back last December to eat at Bear Ramen, and I must say that this place has gone progressively downhill. Dont get me wrong...it's still very good, but it used to be better. read more

Sigh. This place used to be so good. Too bad it's going downhill with the quality of the food depending on who is cooking that day. I always get the Kimchi Fried Rice w/ Spam. Either their portions are getting smaller or I'm just getting fatter and need more food because I can finish it and still want more after. After hearing several people tell me how good it was, I decided to spice up my order and get the Kimchi Fried Noodle instead. BAD DECISION. You would think it would taste the same as the rice version, right? WRONG. The sauce was completely different and the dish was SWEET. O____o Last time I listen to people. Psh. Since this place is a "ramen house", I should probably come back and try their ramen one day. read more
