Day before yesterday I made reservations to fly back to the family in New York for Christmas. That…read moreit's the time of year when people across the coast must begin planning for the winter fellowship is incredible because it seems as if I was just home for Christmas like five minutes ago but that's the way it is and I'll dwell on it not for a moment more. But the planning did get me to thinking of the places I've visited in Oneonta (Stone-eonta whilst I was in college moons ago down the road), places I've enjoyed, places I intend to darken four months hence. And ... The Green Toad is one such place. It is so cozy, with supple seating surfaces and the coffee and sammich place next door. Staff spotlights the good reads with an objective sense of humor it feels. The bookshelves appear to lean strongly neither right nor left. As with other independent booksellers, they don't have the breadth of offerings that you'll find on your computer, but if you call ahead they'll order what you desire and have it waiting to proffer for a fair price and with a smile. Amazon can take care of the former. I've yet to receive a box with a smile inside. Here's a tip for you. Call the Toad and ask them to order up Daniel Ellsberg's book entitled Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers. Fascinating read on the people who risked everything to make public secrets that once illuminated are said to have weighed heavily in our decision to end the futile destructive engagement in Southeast Asia. For me, Ellsberg's narcissism is outweighed by the lives it saved. If the former motivated the latter, so be it. The story needed to be told. Ellsberg didn't spend the rest of his life behind bars because the law of the land at the time he committed his act of conscience didn't require it. That little oversight has been seen to, as will be attested by Bradley Manning as he serves the 35 year sentence handed down today. All hail to the corporate whistleblower, all hail the neighborhood snitch. But you best not pull the covers off the murder of civilians overseas or what's gone down at Gitmo, you best not hint that Brother is reading your email and photographing your license plates lest you like the idea of living the rest of your days in the pen or in a room at the Moscow airport. There are nuances and details to be sure, facts we'll never learn but if we did perhaps these facts might change our minds. I'm open to that. One thing I can tell you with certainty, as far as the facts that are published are concerned, if it be Christmastime, I'll be picking them up here at the Green Toad.

I've gotta say that I'm a fan of this place. You can definitely find different, out-of-the-ordinary…read moregifts here and the best part is that they're all locally made. What I also enjoy is that there is something for everyone here! From vases and paintings to french-style rolling pins and beautiful handmade cards, you could spend hours just shopping around. What's cool about this place is that each of the artists that sell their work at the store take turns working a shift to run the place, so it's one big collaborative community. Yes, the prices are a little bit more than, say, the local Wal-Mart, but just remember that you know exactly where your goods are coming from and that they're one-of-a-kind and not mass produced in a factory. So, with the holiday season fast approaching, I definitely recommend stopping by Artisans Guild where you'll probably be able to scratch a gift or two off your shopping list.

BLUF: This store has my lifelong baseball memorabilia business!…read more I am a US Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan for three years. I recently was home on emergency leave. One day on my way to the hospital, I decided to try to clear my head and do some searching for an anniversary gift for my wife. She absolutely loves Jorge Posada. I looked at a couple of stores, but didn't find anything worth while. Then I walked into Paterno Brothers Sports. I looked on their one wall and I couldn't believe what I saw. They had a certified authentic, autographed baseball by Jorge Posada. So, I asked them to see it. I then asked if they had anything else autographed by him. They said yes. So, I was shown an autographed book. It was Jorge's autobiography. At first, when he said he had a book, I thought it was the one that he and his wife had written about their child with cranio. I only say that because I told the gentlemen my son's story of cranio, and how Jorge's and Mrs. Posada's book helped my wife with so much during that time. Not looking for a discount, the gentlemen then said he would give me a discount and to tell my wife that he hopes she has a great anniversary year. I was taken aback by his generosity. But it doesn't end there. When we went up to the counter, he asked where my wife and I live. I told him that I am stationed in Okinawa. He thanked me for my service (I still don't know how to properly respond to that except to thank a person back). He told me how to ring out on his IPad teller and said he would be right back. Now, at this point, I was only purchasing the autographed baseball. After I signed and was done emailing myself a receipt, he then presented me the autographed book with another thank you for my service. My jaw dropped! I couldn't believe the amount of generosity that this man had. It will forever stick with me. I even almost left my credit card. I want to thank the Paterno Brothers for making my stressful trip into one that I will remember for the rest of my life. Your generosity means so much that I can't thank you enough! Thank you and I will make sure that I return to your store for the rest of my life.
