Food was expensive and so so, service was awesome. First time going there. Doubt I return.

Bear Tooth Theater Pub or simply "Bear Tooth" as it is known was one of the first restaurants in the nation to model the theater pub experience in which food was served while being able to catch a show. Sister restaurant to Anchorage's notorious and ever beloved Moose's Tooth, Bear Tooth is actually three restaurants in one. 1. The theater pub as was mentioned. 2. The Bear Tooth Grill which is a slightly more upscale restaurant and 3. The Bear Tooth Theater Pub café. A seat yourself casual environment that shares the same menu as the theater pub. Bear Tooth took over the old dollar Denali Theater location during the late 90s. The first restaurant in the family (Moose's Tooth) was actually started by a couple of friends who had never actually worked in a restaurant. They just knew they liked beer and the rest they say is history. Beer plays a big part in all of the businesses and in fact houses the third business in this family - Broken Tooth Brewing. Which still all these years later remains a popular part amongst its customers. Though I am not able to make it to the theater as much as I like, I do enjoy the Bear Tooth experience. They also offer monthly concerts known as 1st Tap which books national acts. Additionally they upgraded the stage and screen to 3D digital several years ago. From a food experience Bear Tooth offers pizzas similar to Moose's Tooth but have also branched into other offerings like burritos, tacos, salads, appetizers and homemade desserts in lieu of the traditional movie offerings of popcorn and candy. The Grill offers a full service bar and daily specials and slightly revamped version of the café menu. Some of my favorites are their southwestern burger as well as their southwestern rice bowl which includes blackened chicken with house made tortilla chips. On the pizza side one of my favorites always will be Santa's Little Helper. The only thing I have tried on the menu that I really wasn't crazy about was the taco salad from the Grill. I actually found it quite bland. Today I happened to be meeting a friend to celebrate "National Pizza Day" so decided to meet at Bear Tooth Café for lunch. Given my lunch companion was gluten sensitive I suggested we try the gluten free crust, which I had never had before. For starters we both had the ranch salad which includes salad greens, ranch, bacon, and salsa fresca and cheddar cheese. We decided to put the gluten free crust to the test with the Santa's Little Helper which includes blackened chicken, steak, bacon, red peppers, cilantro and mozzarella and provolone. When it arrived I noted the crust looked much like a cracker thin crust I so love from another local establishment. It was crispy/crunch and not overdone. Definite thumbs up from me and I will definitely be ordering the gluten free crust in the future. Bear Tooth is also particularly known for its scratch margaritas. The staff I have encountered during my times there always seem to be very friendly. They actually seem like a large family. Good food, good venue for movies and live music. What more could one really ask? Definite thumbs up. read more

ANCHORAGE: Came in late and B-lined straight for the #1 recommended place in the city. The Bears Tooth is way out on a side road, low to the ground and hidden in the weird middle of a bunch of old apartment complexes. Completely divey location, pretty cool. They got me in at the very end of the shift and sere still super friendly and accommodating, big plus, 5 star service. They have a ton of good food genres and menu items within each genre, so plenty to choose from (and plenty of potential missteps). I went with a couple recommendations from the waitress and tried sorting through a few yelp reviews, which were a bit contradictory. In the end I went with the calamari starter and the blackened scallops, and requested "easy on the spice" thanks to the tip of another reviewer who said they overdo it. CALAMARI (4.5 stars/$12): This was super good! Lightly breaded, just enough batter, just big enough and flavorful, with a delicious garlic aoli with cayenne. Awesome! Blackened Scallops (3.5 stars/$20): This dish was complex: not pretty to look at, but the veggies and rice were Awesome! The scallops were a little too chewy and not great; I got it "easy on the spice" and they were still very spicy. Be sure to order like this if you choose this dish. Key Lime Pie (5 stars): This pie was fantastic! Probably the smoothest key like I have had; no jarring tartness like I have come to expect. It still had full flavor but was just extremely creamy. Preface: the majority of my friends love this place's food, so I'm in the minority in finding it just ok. And I'm referring to the restaurant side, not the theater cafe side. There are two great items on the restaurant menu I love: the lavender pear Bellini, and the key lime pie. Both are outstanding, but they are to me an exception to the otherwise not so exciting or tasty food. There are two good items on the menu, both from brunch: the breakfast sandwich (which I could easily replicate at home and have) and the biscuits and gravy (which is like any other standard b & g). But neither are what I would consider exceptional or creative. They have good calamari and garlic fries, too. However, there are much better brunch places around town. Everything else either doesn't run to my taste or is kind of bland, including my recent tries, the cotija tacos, their special migas (which I had yesterday), the carne asada tacos, and the chips with three salsas. There's not much flavor to them. Some of their stuff is spicy on top of the bland, but spicy isn't a flavor. It's a sensation. I have also tried two different dishes with chicken (including a spinach salad and the fettuccine). In both, the chicken was dry and overlooked and tasteless. Yuck! And the special berry cherry Bellini they had last week tasted like cough syrup. The server graciously took it back and replaced it with the lavender pear. Speaking of servers, they are all outstanding. Friendly, helpful, accommodating. And they generally manage the crazy business well--this place gets packed just about every night. It's a favorite local hangout. Should you be up for just hanging out at the bar, be prepared to be crammed in and constantly having people squeezing past you on the way to the bathroom. I haven't eaten in the dining area of the movie side, but I've eaten food in a movie from that side, but only the Caesar wrap. It was yummy, fresh, and a nice easy thing to eat in the dark. That's all I can speak to on this side except I like the cheap wine choices they offer at the bar for the shows. And the movie offerings and the music shows are undoubtedly the best thing about this place. They bring in fun acts and offer movies that you can't see anywhere else in the city, and cheaper tickets for popular movies after they've been out a while. I'm glad they are here for that and do a five star job there, but I am reviewing based on the food and mostly the grill restaurant side. If it's up to me when going out with friends, I usually don't choose this place for just eating and hanging out. But I can find things that I can enjoy when I do go there, and I imagine I will continue to end up there on occasion. I don't think it's on the top of any list of places to eat in town, but as I said, I know lots of people who would disagree. It's definitely a good place to get a taste of Anchorage local life, though. It's something of an institution, and that makes it worth checking out at least once. read more

Bear Tooth Grill changed their calamari from rings to strips. While the strips were cooked well, the sauce was nothing special--surprisingly disappointing for a flavorful restaurant. An aioli base would taste better. I write this because I am a fried calamari connoisseur. I will not be ordering this again. So.much.food. My friend and I split the pork tacos, nachos, and a half order of garlic fries. It was so much food! At first I was whiny because the prices were a little more than I was willing to pay for an early dinner/late lunch. But when our food came there was so much!! The nachos were my favorite. The garlic fries reminded me of the ones you'd get at a baseball game. Yum. As for the pork tacos...they had a lot of potential. The pork was dry but it was easy to forget about if you topped it with everything else that came with the entree. Would I come back? Yes, but knowingly going for a TexMex sort of meal because I felt that was a theme they had going on their menu. Would I recommend it to a friend? ***This is for the theatre side*** I haven't been to a movie in a while even though you can get decent grub and beer because of all the yuppies saving 20 seats and make it a hassle to find seating. I haven't been to a show in a while because of all the pot smokers. I'm a pretty liberal person and don't care about the smoking itself, but I really don't understand how lax the company is with people smoking openly at shows. Can't they go outside between sets? I write this as I would like to go to Beach House, but am not sure I want to subject myself to that type of environment at a concert. read more

She is wonderful, professional and kind and gave me a generous gift card. I had not complained but I must say customer service was wonderful as well as serving tasty food. My girlfriend and I went there after work a couple weeks ago. I ordered the fish and chip. It came out pale and soggy. I can't believe the server delivered it. I tried to eat it but the batter was raw. I sent it back but after 20 minutes it still wasn't ready. My girlfriend had already finished and I was over it. The manager came up and told me he took it off the bill, like that impressed me. I didn't eat it, why would I pay for it? He told me he would comp my next meal when I came in again, but them never gave me a coupon or anything. So I left empty handed, hungry, and upset. Thanks for nothing. read more

I love the dining room/bar side of Bear Tooth. The Mexican-American fusion cuisine is perfect. I usually order their enchiladas, chicken skewers, and the pork with Mac and cheese--and garlic cilantro fries are a great starter. The spenard-a-rita (along with all of the other cocktails) are great for pairing, and it's an even greater bonus to be able to reserve a booth in the theatre at a great price. read more

We decided to come here after Moose's Tooth's wait time was 2 hours long and the hostess recommended it because the wait time will be shorter. We called and they told us the wait will be 15-30 mins. 6 mins later we arrived and the wait time was 45 mins, no biggie we decided to wait. 45 mins later our table was ready, we didn't wait long to meet our waiter and he brought us water. My cup had old vegetable stuck to it and the table looked to be cleaned in a rush bc it was sticky and had some old food on it. After we placed our order it took such a long time to come. About 45 minutes our waiter came and We were told they were running behind so they brought us pizza so we "don't starve" ... the pizza was the same type of pizza we ordered but it was cold, Overcooked and not enjoyable but we were hungry so we ate. The cilantro garlic fries were good but some of the fries were black. About 15 mins later our pizza came and it was fresh but we were full from the overcooked cold pizza. Overall with the wait time and wait for the food it took close to 3 hours. The same amount of time we would've spent in Moose's Tooth waiting for the table and eating fresh food. I will say a positive is they have a kids menu even though it's small. I did appreciate our waiter informing us about them running behind and checking in on us & the gesture of bringing us pizza was nice but it was old cold pizza lol. Overall the server was great but the experience was not. We'll just stick to moose's tooth. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at Bear Tooth for the 1st time! I liked it so much that I came two more times in my 1 week stay. We had the calamari as our appetizer. Large potion executed perfectly. It was a hit with my daughter and friends. I had their soup of the day, a delicious fresh soup packed with flavor. Their burgers and fries were also a hit. We all shared a ginger cream brûlée. I've been here a few times since my last review and just realized I never updated it! The food is always delicious and they try to make sure everything is as it should be or correct any mistakes immediately. The service is always amazing, everyone is so friendly and nice. I'm so glad drink specials are back! And I'm glad to see a couple of their previous specials were added to the menu. Everything is getting back to normal and I'm secretly hoping they bring back some of their previous items like some burrito options on the theatre side like the steak & mushroom or the steak & avocado, and some of their brunch items like the churros and the huevos rancheros. There's also a few drink specials I haven't gotten over that I hope make a comeback as a special sometime soon. read more

Probably one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. Large portions. Almost can't go wrong with almost anything ordered here. Not super authentic Mexican, which I don't really believe it tries to be... it has its own take. But nonetheless, delicious food! This review is for the Grill portion. We enjoyed the following items: AK BARLEY BREADED CALAMARI STRIPS- These were cooked perfectly!! We weren't fans of the ranchero sauce but very good over all. CARNE ASADA TACOS- I feel like a kid every time I order these. The beef was trimmed perfectly with no surprise grisly bite. The vegetables and tomato were fresh, and the guacamole was really good! SONORAN STYLE ENCHILADAS- Cheese, Chicken and Beef were ordered and I had a bite of each one and they were really good along with the black beans. I come to Bear Tooth probably a few times a month. I love the food and have never had a problem. Last night I went and wanted to give the Lucky Ducky Burger a try, it's on their featured menu. All was well until about 2 hours later, when I got the most intense food poisoning of my life. This is just a warning to avoid that burger. On the last day of our Alaska trip, we wanted to try out a pub that locals hang out. Someone suggested Bear tooth pub and we were there in Sunday evening. The place was packed with a 30 min wait time. Once seated, we got great derived from Molly. As for the food the Jamaican jerk sandwich was really good. The root beer is some of the best. They brew it here and it has a light fizz but wonderful taste. Get a growler full. THe cheesy bread has lots of cheese and wonderful crust. Simply a great appetizer. The wheat crust is thin and tasty. I usually dislike wheat crusts in pizza but this was quite good. The onion and olive pizza was very tasty. We were traveling through Anchorage on our way to Seward and this was a fabulous stopping point. An extensive menu of tacos, bowls, salads, burgers and of course pizza! There's no need to read reviews of this place, you're going to like it. That being said, you must be aware that there are two sides to this restaurant with two distinct menus (the Theatre side and the Grill side.) I give the food 4 out of 5 on both sides. On the Theatre side, the Spicy Bear burrito is outstanding: big enough to fill a hungry belly, spicy enough to make it interesting without the need for constantly sipping water. On the Grill side, the Potato Burrito is amazing: filled with delicious potato chunks and an amazing spicy cream sauce. Don't forget to check out the specials on both sides, you will generally not be disappointed. The Theatre side gets 3 out of 5 for service and the Grill side gets 4 out of 5 for service. The Grill side staff (including world's best bartender Ken and hands down friendliest server ever Bret) really know how to make your experience enjoyable. The beer (available on both sides) gets a 5 out of 5. Some of the First Tap beers are a little out there, but taken as a whole you can't go wrong with Bear / Moose's Tooth beer. The restaurant / ambiance gets tricky. Grill side gets 4 out of 5 for being very well laid out considering how small the space is (you feel cozy but not cramped ever.) You will almost always have to wait for a table on the Grill side no matter when you go. The restaurant / ambiance of the Theatre side gets a 3 out of 5. Sort of generic seating with booths that are not all that comfortable. The actual movie theater itself gets 5 out of 5. The tables and movie chairs are surprisingly comfortable. How can beer + dinner + movie get anything less than a 5? My favorite restaurant and bar in Anchorage! Several local beers on Tap and original rotating entrees. Most of the food is in a tex-mex style. Everything I have had was exceptional. Cool adjoining theater with gift shop. A go to place if in Anchorage. Prices are reasonable. read more
