After taking a nice walk along the beach area and the pier in San Clemente, we found this cute little coffee shop, Bear Coast Coffee ! They have a variety of coffee and teas either hot or iced. I chose to have their iced Horchata latte. The coffee was decent and it had a slight taste of a cinnamon flavor and giving it a Horchata vibe. Absolutely awful coffee! Perhaps one of the worst coffees I've ever had. I tried the lavender caramel latte and the orange dream latte, and both had ZERO flavor!!! ALMOND MILK LATTE 3/5: The make their own almond milk, which I appreciate. It did water down the latte a little. That's what happens when you're used to the creaminess of oat milk, I guess! ICED MATCHA LATTE 4/5: I got it with half oat, half water. The matcha is organic (yay!) and the color was the right shade of green. I'd get it again. CHIA SEED PUDDING 3.5/5: When you're wanting something simple and filling, this is a good choice. Nothing special about it though. Berries, almond butter, cinnamon. I'd get it again but it's not memorable. I'd come to Bear Coast for the scenic views and atmosphere! We ordered a matcha latte and the Feta Egg sandwich. Their croissants looked good so I asked if I could have the sandwich made on the croissant and the counter person shook his head and said he'd ask like he was being inconvenienced by the question. When he returned he replied with a condescending smirk, "that's a no". No explanation, no apology, just poor customer service. The matcha came out and the milk was spoiled. I was so confused when I took the first couple of sips and it tasted sour. I order a matcha latte everyday and never tasted anything like it. I had my partner try it and she immediately said the milk must be spoiled. They made us another one quickly which was great. The positive was that the sandwich we ended up getting was actually really tasty. Overall giving two stars for the initial customer service experience and the spoiled, sour milk. read more

They remade it but for only having 4 other customers present, it seemed that they were more focused on their friendships than serving coffee. My husband told me this experience was far different than the fast-paced weekend service he experienced when it was packed but appeared that the owners were present. Maybe I'm spoiled by cafes with larger portions but my iced macchiato only barely filled half the cup, WITH the ice. It took me by surprise at first -- like "where's the other half"? I wasn't about to ask the baristas about it since they were so busy, I just know now that I should've asked beforehand. For such a small portion I wish it was served in a small cup like the hot drinks! Portions aside it did not taste good, which is where my rating comes from. It was a simply wonderful breakfast location. It's in a beautiful setting. It was instantly clear from their prices that they were not simply an independent minded fair deal, fair trade business but that they offered great quality without the urge to rip off their customers which is sadly all too common now. Three of us dined. It looked rather sparse inside and the outdoor seating is quite basic too. We ordered and sat outside in the early morning warmish sun. The Pacific Ocean crashed before us, the smell of coffee was delightful, a sea lion barked in the breeze, and as we ate, joggers ran by, dog walkers gently exercised their pets and the train going toward Los Angeles slowly passed by. I opted for the mashed avocado with a musky smoked paprika dust, a perfectly boiled cage-free egg, fresh greens in a tangy lime vinaigrette, and a full flavour piece of dry crisp prosciutto ham ($7). Coffees were so good too, cappuccinos and a black coffee all circa €4. It was a busy place with most customers being aloof multi-tasking 20 and 30 somethings, all with wireless ear pieces linked to invisible iPhones being busy. My lifestyle is much removed from theirs and I'm grateful for it. This business contributes part of its profits to One Atta Time who make water filters to help coffee farming communities who struggle to provide their families with this most basic of human rights. Imagine the folk who work hard to put coffee in your cup struggle themselves to have fresh un contaminated water for their families. Although there wasn't a lot of information on whether the coffee was shade grown, bird friendly I've no doubt they easily hit 4 green stars. Service was courteous and speedy. Cool beach vibes! Cozy and quaint. A bit too loud for my liking though. It's a very popular hot spot, so I don't blame them but I like a nice chill laid back coffee shop. You cannot carry on a quiet comfortable conversation in here. We took our hit delicious lattes to the park area and enjoyed the views! They also have a second location in Dana Point it's pretty relaxing during the week on morning hours. It ya located in their plaza where Dana hosts their farmers market. Would we be back to this location? Probably but I do advise you to beware that there is needy limited parking available. Street parking is super rare and limited. Plus seating is also very limited. They only have one restroom. Other than that it's the only coffee shop near the pier now that Ellie's table is closed down. There is a French restaurant that took the same spot but have not tried it. read more

Comparing drink size, you'll pay $6.50 for a small dirty chai. Extremely overpriced for what it is. Taste is good but the chai is very subtle, personally I think it needs to be stronger, hints ordering a chai. If this was 3.5 as advertised it would earn another star.
