The morning of our event there was snow on the ground, and Danielle, one of the owners, personally called early to confirm everything was still on. She shoveled herself out and drove in from New Jersey to make sure the coffee bar was set up and ready. That level of dedication and professionalism truly stood out. The coffee bar itself was a huge hit. They offered espresso drinks, cappuccinos, flavored lattes, oat milk options, and iced selections -- all made fresh to order. So good! This is what I'd expect of a Staten Island local favorite. First off, the ambiance is low-key. Upon entering, I saw customers of all ages. One table had a group of senior women catching up; another of two kids enjoying their waffles; and a third of a customer enjoying her solitude with a book in hand. Interestingly, even with the low music, the acoustics made it difficult to hear the person I was with. There was so much chatter in the space! Still, I enjoyed my time. This was my first visit, so I asked the cashier what he'd recommend for toasts. What was suggested were the avocado toast or the ricotta with fig jam and arugula toast. I went for the latter! I paired it with a hibiscus/cranberry tea called Angel Fall Mist, apparently a fav among customers. All in all, the meal was delish!!! The fig jam was not too sweet and was complemented well by the ricotta cheese. $9 for the toast plus tax came out to $10.89. The tea total was $3.27. Pretty affordable, I'd say! This was my third visit to Bean & Leaves, and they continue to absolutely amaze me every single time! The pastries are consistently a highlight - always incredibly fresh, perfectly made, and so delicious. Beyond the amazing food, the employees are wonderfully friendly and do an excellent job keeping the entire place spotlessly clean. I adore the atmosphere here; it's so cozy and cute, making it the perfect spot whether I want to surf the web, catch up with a friend, dive into a book, or just enjoy a coffee. Wow I love this spot! With ample seating, it's a great place to sit down with your coffee and food and get some work done. I tried to the monthly Berry in Love special, which was so pretty to look at and also delicious. The barista was really helpful in trying to figure out what I'd like but also pushing me to try something new. Unfortunately, this visit was very disappointing. Most of the staff seemed unhappy, and very few greeted us with a smile. Our food came out at completely different times; by the time I was finishing my meal, my friends were still waiting for theirs, which made it hard to enjoy the experience together. I understand it's winter, but the restaurant was uncomfortably cold. Many people, including us, kept our coats on while eating because it felt like the heat wasn't working. While the drinks were great, the food itself was just okay and didn't make up for the overall experience. I've been to the Arthur Kill Road location and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to try this Forest Ave spot. Sadly, it didn't live up to expectations. This place is one of the best locations on Staten Island and it has the worst food. I'll come here out of convenience and they will mess up toast. Whichever side is burnt beyond recognition is the side they will put the ricotta on. Want a BEC on a croissant? It will be over cooked and taste like there is burnt connective tissue holding it together. It's nice to sit outside though for 45 mins while someone messes up your order so I'll keep coming back. read more

1/5/25: I used to come here all of the time. I think they are getting more busy and the layout/space is insufficient and the number of experienced employees have gone down. I came in during 1:30 and ordered a matcha latte which was mediocre. I'm unsure why they put a shot of espresso in a large matcha latte... I did not order an espresso matcha latte. The matcha to espresso ratio is off... taste like almond milk and espresso with a hint of matcha. They are not blended well. The cup was leaking and some got onto my clothing. The employee making my drink had never made the drink before and was asking for help but gabby was helping him minimally and laughing when he messed up the first time. I think they need to be more professional and get it together. Will boycott and not return for a while. read more

Unfortunately the ham and cheese were cold from the fridge. The cold contents make an otherwise tasty sandwich a bit off putting. The chocolate croissant was room temp. It was ok but too bready. I think it would have been better warmed up. The Cinnabon waffle was delicious! The waffle had so much cinnamon it was just below a red hot. The waffle was balanced by a light icing that wasn't too sweet. The coffee was good but they added so much cream that it was cold. Over all the food was good but could have been improved with a few small tweaks. Service: The service was decent for a coffee shop. I had the coffee before and I didn't care for it, they never make my coffee right so I just don't get my coffee from here. Now the service here is freaking horrible, I don't know if it's because I'm black but the service here is never good to me. It seems like I'm always waiting extra long for my order and when I do get my food the waiter just toss my plate on the table. And today I watched the waiter on how he treated the Caucasian customers and he served them with a smile. And to make it even worse the waiter is serving in tiny shorts any shorter and his goods make hang out. The ambiance is average nothing spectacular. I'm giving them a 4 based on my avocado toast because other than that I will give them 1.5 stars. I stopped in for the first time with my husband this weekend after we had heard so many positive reviews from friends and family. Most mornings when I drive by they always look packed so we figured we would dine in to try their coffee and breakfast options. We were both surprised to see how many options were available; while the menu is waffle and croissant French toast heavy, they do have alternative options like bagel sandwiches and grab and go items which is a nice addition. We ordered the original waffle and the blueberry cheesecake French toast - the French toast was really yummy; not too sweet and perfectly portioned! My husbands waffle was okay, the texture was not dense but almost gluey as you chewed which made it not enjoyable. Overall we loved the coffee and are willing to give another shot as it could have been a slight oversight this visit. read more

Super sweet people - we spilled a huge cup of iced herbal tea and they came with a mop - so nice about it, and they refilled the cup and were surprised when we insisted on paying for it. We walked in on Memorial Day. Party of 4 with a toddler. There was only one high chair which was occupied at the time. You have to order the food at the register and they bring it to your table once it's done. They offer a variety of coffee brews and even had the "flavor of the day". We ordered a couple of ice lattes (vanilla and caramel) and a hot cappuccino. They all tasted watered down. The waffles were fluffy and soft. The fruits were all fresh. For overall food and taste I rate this place a 2.5, for decor and fast service a 4. I Will like to return to taste a different cup of coffee. read more

So I have been to Bean and Leaves a few times but not recently. I decided to visit today and unfortunately I wasn't really impressed. We came here for coffee and waffles. I ordered a reg coffee and americano both were cold, bitter, burnt and it almost tasted like they don't clean the equipment properly. It's really a shame because the shop wasn't really busy to mess up coffee that bad. We ordered a waffle frittata with zucchini, bacon and cheese. A cookie and cream waffle and a churro waffle with vanilla ice cream. The waffle frittata is very interesting take on eggs. It was light, fluffy and tasty. It came with a bowl of fruit. I thought it was good. The churro waffle is a great concept.. The waffle itself was some what dense. It had way to much cinnamon and sugar on top. The vanilla ice cream went well and you def didn't need syrup. If they refined this waffle it would be so much better. The cookie and cream waffle was so much fluffier then the churro waffle. It had pieces of cookies and a big mound of whip cream and chocolate syrup. The waffle itself was really good. Overall, I thought B&L would have been a lot better. Really wanted to LOVE this neighborhood gem because it's small, cute; has inspiring messages and decor available for purchase, great POS system, can sit, parking on the street, all of the things, ya know....but yeah, no. The quality of the food is a miss, it must be the hype because these waffles lack flavor, period. Not sure what batter is used but I couldn't finish my one plain expensive waffle :( The girls who work here are friendly if they know you or if you look like them (feels like, just my observation) so I never felt that warmth in regards to customer service but I've seen it displayed to others in front of me so they are definitely capable :) The drinks; coffee; I've had hot coffee that was good from here, umm love the chai, iced coffee not so much.
