Let me just say...it was absolutely worth the return trip! First, the clam chowder. My wife gave it a 10 out of 10, and that's saying something because she's a self-proclaimed clam chowder snob. She rarely finds a chowder that can compete with her favorite spots in Monterey. Well...hallelujah--we finally found one! The bread bowl deserves its own standing ovation. It tasted like fresh sourdough that had just come out of the oven--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely delicious. Normally you finish the chowder and leave most of the bread behind. Not this time. I ate every single bite of that bread bowl. It was simply scrumptious. The fish and chips were equally impressive. They served a huge plank of fish that was lightly battered and cooked perfectly. Too many restaurants hide a tiny piece of fish under a mountain of batter, leaving you feeling disappointed (and overly full). Not Penryn Grill. The fish was fresh, flaky, and outstanding. In fact, it was the first time in our 43 years of marriage that I've seen my wife finish every bite of her fish and chips! The chips were another pleasant surprise. Instead of the usual thick fries, they were thinly shaved, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely addictive. We'd never had them prepared that way before, and they were a home run. Of course, I couldn't leave without ordering what I consider Penryn Grill's signature dish--the shrimp tacos. They are hands down the best around. Perfectly seasoned, loaded with flavor, and honestly worthy of ordering every single visit. The atmosphere was terrific. We loved the live '80s music, the service was fantastic as always, and our waitress graciously endured my terrible jokes with a smile. That's five-star service in my book. As retirees, we're always on the hunt for a place that serves a great meal at a great value, and Penryn Grill checks every box. One tip: If you're planning to go on a Friday for the chowder and fish & chips, arrive between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. They regularly sell out--and after this meal, it's easy to understand why. My partner loves their BYO sandwiches for lunch, and while I haven't tried them, they look delicious. When I'm hungry I go for the outstanding avocado toast. Everything is locally sourced and the balsamic/olive oil they dress the arugula with adds a flavor bomb that I can't get enough of! It was $28 & change. It felt a little on the expensive side for 4 ribs and a sandwich. However... it was damn delicious!! When I got home, I did add a little salt, pepper, & mayo in the brisket sandwich... and then for me, it was fire! The smoked pork ribs were soooo goooood with the dry rub that was on them. Tender and juicy ribs... mmmm! I'm not sure if sauced ones were available, but I really liked these the way they were. We arrived around 1:20 PM. The restaurant was busy but certainly not packed, with several open tables. My daughter and I were dining with my young granddaughter, so when we were offered a two-person table, we politely asked if we could wait for something larger to accommodate a high chair. The hostess told us it would be approximately 30 minutes. While I understand that restaurants sometimes stagger seating, it seemed odd that we could be seated immediately at a smaller table but would need to wait 30 minutes for a larger one when several were visibly available. We ended up waiting more than 30 minutes, and honestly, it felt as though we'd been forgotten. I'll start with something positive: the restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. The plants, decor, and overall aesthetic are gorgeous. Unfortunately, that's where most of the positives ended. Once we were finally seated, our server, Yuliia, immediately wanted to take our order before we'd even had a chance to look at the menu. Since this was our first visit and several menu items were unfamiliar to us, we wanted a few minutes to look everything over. She seemed visibly irritated by this and repeatedly looked at her watch. I understand the restaurant closes at 3 PM, but at this point, we still had plenty of time to order and enjoy our meal. Instead, we were made to feel rushed and unwelcome almost immediately. We ordered the Varenyky to share, and I will say that this was easily the highlight of our entire experience. They were delicious! Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. My daughter ordered the Salmon Benedict and specifically requested that her eggs be cooked a little more than usual because she didn't want runny egg whites. Our server responded by telling her that would take more time. My daughter clarified that she was perfectly fine waiting and that she wasn't asking for overcooked yolks, just fully cooked whites. When our food arrived, her Benedict had been prepared with scrambled egg whites instead of poached eggs. This was absolutely not what she ordered or requested. She immediately brought the mistake to another server's attention, and he offered to bring out poached eggs. Here's where things became especially frustrating. Bringing out two poached eggs on the side does NOT correct an improperly prepared Eggs Benedict. The entire dish is meant to be assembled together, with the poached eggs and hollandaise sauce complementing everything underneath. Adding poached eggs on top of an already prepared dish of scrambled egg whites completely defeats the purpose. Our server, Yuliia, then appeared holding two poached eggs in a cup and rather rudely asked, "Do you want these?" Not once did anyone offer to remake the meal correctly. Not once did anyone offer to remove the incorrectly prepared dish from our bill or provide any other reasonable resolution. Mistakes happen in restaurants. I completely understand that. But when a customer receives something entirely different from what they ordered, the appropriate response should be to offer to remake the dish correctly, not hand them a couple of eggs in a cup and act as though the problem has been solved. As for my scrambled avocado toast, that was disappointing as well. The bread was barely toasted and wasn't even warm, and the eggs, which were supposed to be soft scrambled, were not prepared that way. What makes this experience even more frustrating is that the food being served to other tables looked fantastic. We genuinely came in excited to try this restaurant and had every intention of enjoying a wonderful meal. Instead, we experienced a long and confusing wait for seating, an unfriendly server who made us feel rushed, incorrectly prepared food, and a complete lack of effort to make things right. The most disappointing part wasn't even the mistake with the food. It was the attitude and the unwillingness to properly correct it. A beautiful restaurant can only go so far when the service and attention to customers fall this short.
