Fantastic! After poking around Yelp for a few days trying to decide on an Optometrist, I decided to give Beach Eyecare Optometry a try, plus it gives me an excuse to get my fat on at Deli News among other things (Trader Joe's also there!). Most Optometrists in the area were rated fairly similar, but this location is actual opened for business on a Saturday! Anyone with the Monday-Friday, 9-5 schedule knows its such a pain in the ass to get anything done, y'know what I'm sayin'? YA KNOW!? Anyways, This was my first time using my vision insurance, so I was a bit apprehensive for some reason. I wish I could remember her name, but one of the staff members took the time and thoroughly explained what was covered with my insurance. She was very patient, despite me asking the same questions a few times. Superb customer service! Anyhoo, I did I got my pre-checkup thing going and the young lady that was helping me was also very nice. I gave her problems too cause I couldn't open my right eye wide and long enough for the gadgets and machines to took a clear picture haha. Oh I forgot to mention, they have a Keurig! Moving on, finally when I was moved into the room, Dr. Tan instantly made me feel at home; shes very outgoing, down-to-earth and extremely knowledgeable. It was like, conversing with an old friend I haven't seen in ages or something haha. Definitely made my eye exam enjoyable! Speaking of which, I had to retake another photo of my retina because I still couldn't keep my eye opened even in the initial retake haha. Best experience I've had with an Optometrist, Great selection of frames, they helped me pick one out and I'm very happy with what I ended up choosing. The frames fit perfectly on my face and do not squeeze my temples like most I've had in the past. I believe I have found my new doctor when it comes to my vision haha. I needed a new eye doc close to work so I got online and yelped away. I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Bunthay Tan this year for my annual eye exam. Dr. Tan was friendly, personable, thorough, patient, and very knowledgeable. I can only use my VSP eye insurance to get contact lens or glasses (not both). Dr. Tan took the time to draw out the numbers to see which option was the better deal. She had a handy dandy laminated pricing chart and dry erase marker ready to show me the numbers. In the end, we went with contacts. During one of my eye tests, I had to get dilated and she explained to me that during that test she will be looking at my retina in the back of my eye to see if it has thinned out. People with high rx like me (i'm at a -10 on my left eye and -8 on the right, eeeek!) should be more cautious about thinning of the retina. She used the analogy of a stretched rubber band. It really helped me to understand my eye health better and no other doctor has ever explained it that way to me before. It was very helpful. The practice itself is clean, modern and inviting. The front office staff is very courteous and polite. I would recommend Beach Eyecare Optometry to anyone who is looking for an excellent optometrist who really cares about her patients and their overall eye health. read more

First off, I am a graduate student with little to no room in my budget beyond the absolute necessary. Unfortunately for me, I wear a very specific brand of contact lenses that are pricey and difficult to find, and my prescription can be a little finicky. I chose this office because they carry and can fit me for my brand of contacts, the duette series. The office is right next to the Trader Joe's by the CSULB campus, so that was convenient. Walking in the place looked very chic and modern, I was slightly afraid I'd be pressured into purchasing frames and lenses that were out of my budget. This was not the case at all! I came in with an old pair of frames, Dr. Tan and Lisa walked me through the best way to use my double coverage to get both new lenses for my glasses and new contacts. I left with a nice little worksheet that breaks down the cost of everything and what is covered by insurance and what is not. They were very friendly and helpful throughout the entire process, which at other offices is usually a headache. The exam itself was quick, Dr. Tan was punctual getting the exam started and Lisa did the pre-exam measurements as soon as she had my info entered into the computer. I brought a book with me since I'm used to waiting for ages for doctors but I didn't even get a chance to open it. As for price, Dr. Tan was very reasonable. The exam was $75, my contact fitting (which is the most expensive offered there I believe) was $100, and their frames start at $49. While getting my new lenses I didn't feel like I was being sold to get more than I needed in my glasses, she understood that my glasses are just for when I don't feel like wearing my contacts. I had such a great experience and it wasn't a hassle in the least bit. I highly recommend Dr. Tan! Especially if you need specialty contacts or have a really high prescription. read more

Wow. I am so impressed. This was the best eye doctor visit ever! The office was modern and very clean. The staff was great and friendly. They made me coffee while I waited. Dr. Tan was great. She explained everything and I was able to whiz through all the tests. She was able to take a photo of my retina, which as she said, looks like a planet. It definitely did and was really fascinating to see a high def image of my eye. She was personable, easy to talk to, and I felt like she was super passionate about optometry. She has a great selection of designer frames and I thought it was so great that she took the time to help me pick out a pair. Most doctors would let their staff deal with this, but she was an expert and was able to help me fine frames in about 5 minutes. I am very excited to get my frames and I was long overdue for a check up and updating my glasses. I would 100% recommend her to anyone needing an eye exam. This is my review for my first visit, which included dilating my eyes, choosing frames and checking out. First of all, I ended up here out of convenience. My buddy went to the dentist next door and although I've seen this office before while having lunch, I've never stopped in. I'm really glad I did! Dr Tan is awesome! She took a lot of time to go over her process and explained everything she was doing. We discussed my medical history and how proper eye care is so important to my health. She was very engaging and made me feel like she really wanted to make a connection. I've gone to a few doctors where I was basically rushed in and out. Dr Tan made me like we were old friends. Her staff was great too! Lisa took a lot of time to help me select frames and never made me feel rushed. I pick up my new glasses in about 2 weeks. I'm very pleased and will be back! I found this place on Yelp as I was searching optometrists that were close to my workplace. What initially drew me in to make an appointment were the pictures on Yelp. Everything looked so clean and modern that I wanted to give it a try. The pictures did not lie, but what really captured me was the kindness and warmness of the staff. They are so nice and pleasant and offer you coffee (from a Keurig!) or bottled water on arrival. My eye exam was your normal eye exam, but the Dr. made it pretty interesting and fun. I was able to laugh and joke with her, and she even entertained my ever-growing curiosity about the retinal scan and all my pretty inside-my-eye pictures. Then it was time to choose my frames and I must have spent an hour trying to pick out frames. Again, the front office staff was very patient with me and helped me pick out a pair of Ray-Ban's that I'm using right now on the computer. I loved this place so much that I made my co-worker make an appointment with them and she loves them too! I even got a hand written thank you card in the mail from them for the referral! Yes, there are many places you can go to for an eye exam. But don't you want a five star experience, a friendly doctor and a warm and inviting office environment? But above all that, don't you want someone who will be straight with you when you try on those $300 Oliver Peoples frames and they're really just too big for your face..? ;) Thanks Beach Eyecare! My mom's eyes were starting to hurt a lot. I called the place, the receptionist checked if her insurance was accepted and next thing I know, we had an appointment set up. It was fast and easy considering some places won't bother checking your insurance by phone. When we came in on appointment day, the receptionist was very welcoming and helpful when it came to filling in the paperwork. Dr. Tan was just as welcoming if not more. My mom doesn't speak or understand English too well so it helped greatly that Dr. Tan could speak Khmer. I'm sure this made it very easy for my mom to convey the symptoms and all that. After the check up, Dr. Tan explained to her how to use the medicine and sent her off with the prescription. There is a Rite Aid very closely by so we used the prescription there. Right after we dropped off the prescription, the receptionist called to check on my mom to make sure everything went smoothly and to answer any further questions that may have popped now that some time passed. My mom started the day nervous since she's used to mean and dismissive doctors. She left the optometry relieved and happy with the level of service and care given to her here. It's been several weeks since my mom was given this treatment and I'm glad to say it's still working! Her eyes aren't swelling painfully anymore. read more

Beach Eyecare is a beautiful, minimalistic, modern and relaxing practice next door to the Starbucks I frequent every morning before work. They've got a great selection of designer frames including SALT (which I absolutely love), Prada, as well as Oliver Peoples to name a few. Dr.s' Tan and Tan and their team were extremely thorough, professional, and friendly and had no issues answering any questions I had about my astigmatism. They also have some pretty impressive, state of the art technology that pretty much allowed them to see behind my eyeball and figure out my chances of having Glaucoma. The front staff was great and patiently helped me pick the right frames to fit my enormous head without rushing which I really appreciated (somethings just can't be rushed, you feel me?)! These folks are really, really wonderful. I was looking to get some clear lenses put into some frames I bought for a Halloween costume. I called around to 3-4 local places and was quoted some insane prices. Lenscrafters wanted to charge me $159 (their regular price for prescription lenses) to do that. Other places were less, though I didn't want to spend a whole lot for a stinkin' costume. Beach Eyecare was the last place I called. I was just going to settle, but so glad I called them! They quoted me a very fair price of $40-- which is a bit less than the second least-expensive place. The quote was especially fair considering they didn't have an in-house lab so would have to send it out. They were also super-friendly on the phone, and when I visited the store it was really beautiful. They have some exceptionally pleasant gals working the front and the whole decor is quite nice. They called me a few days later to pick up the frames, and left a voicemail. Being busy at the time, I made a mental note to swing by the store and pick them up. So that would have been the end my story, except the day of the Halloween party-- 45 minutes after Beach Eyecare's closing time-- I realized I totally forgot to pick up my glasses for the costume! I had a minor freakout and called them immediately. Thankfully they picked up (as if they were still open) and greeted me quite pleasantly. I asked what time they were open until, and the girl who answered confirmed they were indeed closed. I asked as nicely as I could if I could rush down to pick up the glasses, as I live fairly close, and she said as long as I could get there in about 10 minutes it wouldn't be a problem. Amazing!!! I have been a patient of Dr. Tan's more than a few years now, so I was a little disappointed to find out that his new office is in Long Beach because I live in Pasadena. But because I have always found him to be patient and his care to be trustworthy and thoroughly efficient, I sucked it up and drove to Long Beach at a time with little traffic. I was really impressed with the new office. Parking was not an issue and the location is easy to find. They're a few stores away from Starbucks and Trader Joe's is nearby. I'm not familiar with the area, but I found it with no problems. Their office is new, spacious and clean. When I got there, the receptionist checked me in. I immediately got my paperwork to fill out and was promptly taken to get my eyes checked. I loved that I didn't have to wait long. I went through the exam and found out that my prescription hadn't changed much and I didn't have any crazy eye problems, which I was really happy about. I love my glasses...I have about 5-6 pairs in rotation, so I spent the rest of my visit looking at their big selection of frames. They've got some pretty cool frames including name brands like Oakley, Ray-Ban, etc, etc. I'd highly recommend this optometry to anyone. Having been born into this world with a round face, it was extremely difficult finding the right pair of glasses that complimented my face. For 22 years I have never cared for the optometrist and never found that pair, until now. After walking past the office a couple of times, I decided to walk in and take a look. I was greeted by the receptionist, who is just the sweetest. Dr Tan, who was in the next room, came out to salute me. They were both very welcoming and took their time to help me find those hard to find glasses (I don't think any doctor does that!) It's very likely that if you're searching for an optometrist it's because you've already seen plenty, so after several tried you have a good idea of what it feels like to be in a great place. That's what Beach Eyecare is, great. They're friendly and treat you like you're one of their own, and their equipment is all pretty new, so it's quite a departure from you run of the mill optometrist visit. I saw Dr Bhunthay Tam, and she's sweet, nice and very gentle. She also takes time to make sure you understand what she's talking about without talking down to you. I think some other reviews said the same, and I always appreciate learning something new when I go to the doctor's...Unless it's bad news, no one wants to learn that. Now I'm not going to try to convince you that the frames are the best deal ever because we all know the ugly truth behind the eyeglasses industrial monopoly, so that part is all about whose name you want on your face, but the lovely opticians here genuinely like helping people with their lenses and frames and take special care to make sure you're happy. (Also they get excited when you say you want colored frames) Business seems to be pretty slow on weekdays (it's the location, really) so if you stop by, they're sure to have the extra time to meet all your needs. read more

When you walk in, you are greeted by a very friendly receptionist. Pour yourself a cup of coffee (Yes, they have a coffee machine!) while you wait for an eye exam or browsing through their great selection of frames and sunglasses. I lost my glasses for about a week and was in desperate needs to get a new one, but since its been 2 years since I've gotten a new eye exam... I thought it was about time to get one. I was so happy to get an appointment on a Saturday since I work an 8-5pm job and go to school part time, its hard to make appointments within my schedule. However, they were to able to take me in on a Saturday! Woot! I was greeted as I entered and the whole atmosphere isn't like most Eye Optometry that I have been to. It was open and just an inviting place.... I was surprised of how it looked compare to from the outside. There were three gals working behind the counter, only to find out Dr. Tan was one of the girls behind the counter. Haha, she said she liked the reactions when patients find out that she's the Doc. All in all, Dr Tan was very professional and knowledgeable. I didn't feel bad about asking what such exams were. She took the time in explaining the reasons behind the exams, as well as my results without all the fancy smacy words. I was a bit skeptical about this place, I mean seriously all 5 stars? Well... they did prove me wrong. Nonetheless, I am very I am very pleased and happy I found a place near home. I really wanted to like it here and am highly disappointed. Office is clean. Front office staff so nice. Dr. Nice... but nice doesn't help you see. I told her I couldn't see everything was blurry every time I blinked it was taking a few seconds to refocus, she told me that's normal (I've worn contacts for 30 years) I told her I couldn't read on my phone with the new prescription, she told me looking at my phone is different and to just throw away the contacts. What?!?? I paid $166 plus used my vsp benefits and left without a prescription. Really awful experience. Wasted my once a year benefits and $166 for nothing. read more

I always knew I needed glasses, after 5 years i finally gave it a shot. I was pretty nervous, Dr. Tan did an amazing job calming me down. The equipment seemed state of the art, all the test were computerized. The old school eye exam is over,,, has been replaced with a digital iMac screen! Since this was my first pair and it had to be perfect, Dr. Tan assigned a CSR! I must have spent over an hr looking over and trying dozens of glasses. The csr patiently waited as i took selfies and helped me narrow them down to three. Dr. Tan picked the final one and I loved it. As promised, 6 business days later I had my glasses, perfect! Glasses range anywhere from $40-$300. A but load of brands, i picked Gant over some oliver people. Parking is pretty easy. read more

Best optometrist experience ever! My husband and I came here needing to set up with a new optometrist and also get our contacts RX. Every single staff person was super nice and very personable. The optometrist was just the best. So nice and talkative and I left there feeling like I just had coffee with a friend or something (lol) instead of being at an appointment. The place is also very cute, trendy and sleek. There is also a little kiddy table in the waiting area for kids to color or whatever. Sometimes you just want to get your appointment over with to get your RX and go, but I did not have that feeling at all here. I could've totally hung out and chatted it up with the dr and staff because it was so comfortable and friendly. They also have cute selection of glasses and designer glasses. I wish I would have found this place earlier. I've been nearsighted for 10 years and going to Lenscrafters(big mistake). Everyone who worked here was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Tan was very knowledgeable and personable. She answered all of my questions and more, with zero pressure to buy things I don't need (I hate that).I could tell that she wanted to make sure I was getting the best contacts for my eyes. Overall, going to Beach Eyecare Optometry was a WONDERFUL experience. Nice staff, great doctor, nice area (delicious food nearby) and plenty of parking. If you need to have your eyes checked, look no further. I recommend Beach Eyecare Optometry to all of my visually impaired friends. It was very quick and painless. My Mom called me in a panic one day saying she needed a new eye doctor and appointment right away. Of course, I checked yelp and saw the great reviews for Beach Eyecare. She called and made an appointment and a week later she called back raving of her experience. She said the office had the newest technology and equipment. The office staff made her feel comfortable and confident she made the right choice. So much negative it's difficult to know where to start. The doctor wasn't bad. It was the briefest eye appointment that I've ever had and I felt she talked more than she listened to my concerns. She came off a little arrogant as well. My eyeglass prescription was good, not perfect but acceptable. My contact lens prescription was completely useless. When I was picking out frames I was disappointed in their selection, I really had a hard time liking any of the styles. The girl that was "helping" me was really useless. I had to ask for help, couldn't get good answers with regards to the different coatings they were talking about (and that I hadn't needed to worry about before), and she completely screwed up my bill. So I ended up paying for the contact lens fitting before it was actually completed as well as being issued a refund. I was given a trial pair of contacts while they waited for my prescription trial contacts to come in. Those didn't work at all and then when the trial prescription came in I found that I my depth perception was worse than without glasses and everything was a tiny less blurry than if I wasn't wearing anything (so no reason to wear them). I contacted the office to let them know that and was honestly brushed off. Since I had surgery for my shoulder right after that I honestly didn't try to put in more effort. No effort was made on the part of the office to correct the contact lens prescription. I recently called them (7/11/2016 or so) because the glasses that I bought from them had spots where the coating was worn off. I could barely see out of them and they were not scratched. I also mentioned that the contact lens prescription was never completed and it would be great if they would do something about that. The girl on the phone argued with me about replacing DEFECTIVE lenses and did not in any way offer to help with the contact lens issue, not even to book me for an appointment. I requested that the doctor call me as I was certain that level of customer service would not be tolerated by a doctor that cares about her practice. The doctor never called me back (incredibly unprofessional behavior). I again received a call from the same girl who said that they will replace the lenses (I've had lens that needed to be replaced before due to processing and NEVER had to argue about it). Again she did nothing to help with the contact lens issue except to say that they were willing to re-charge me for a service that the never completed nor did they try to resolve. She tried to argue with me, saying that they called me when they did not. Whatever it is, I have never had a optometrist or opthamologist's office refuse to correct an issue that they did not do correctly. Especially when I paid for a service that I did not receive. I stated that the customer service was the worst that I've ever had to deal with and that I would no longer be coming back. I requested that when I came to pick up my lenses that they have my records printed out and ready for me. They did not give me the complete records. read more

Never thought I'd be reviewing an optometrist but honestly everything about my visit was so great I have to say something. Making the appointment was very simple and easy and they sent me a reminder as well as the intake papers a week before my appointment so that I could fill them out beforehand. When I arrived for my appointment, they were very thorough on their covid protocols and had me call before going inside to make sure they had everything ready for me. Then I met Dr. Bunthany and oh my gosh I couldn't have asked for a better doctor. She was so nice and professional and she explained things about my particular vision that no one has ever bothered to explain to me before and I've been visiting optometrists for 10 years. When it came to picking out my glasses, they had a great selection and the front staff that was helping were so incredibly nice and had so much patience with me which is hard because I'm so indecisive but they maintained their great attitude the whole time. All in all it was a great visit, even if I move to another city I will continue to come back to Dr. Bunthany and her amazing staff. read more
