We chose what felt like a rooftop addition: a single top-floor suite with a large private, semi-wraparound deck. It was genuinely impressive, and we loved it. The young gentleman who checked us in was charming and friendly, and we were glad to arrive. Our room was clean, and the view from the top was excellent, even with a slight obstruction. One of my least favorite post-pandemic trends is how many hotels have adopted the "reduced service" approach, which often reads as "we can't be bothered." When you're paying hundreds of dollars a night, basic service shouldn't be a negotiation. The Shoal did mention this policy upfront. The next morning, on our way out, I stopped by the front desk to keep things simple for housekeeping. We only needed two things: replacement pumps for the broken shower product dispensers (two of them), and the bed made. Straightforward. They did replace the pumps, and we appreciated that. But they didn't bother making the bed. Oddly, they did clean the bathroom and replace towels--something we didn't ask for. When a guest makes a basic request, why is it missed? Policy? Forgetfulness? Inefficiency? Hard to say. The hotel's location is excellent--about two miles from the village in a mostly residential area. There's a charming little gourmet market down the street and several restaurants within walking distance. The beach is just steps away. Even with the on-and-off rain, we genuinely enjoyed our La Jolla weekend. The food scene in this town is strong. Do a little research, because there are some fantastic restaurants packed into this small, very appealing area.

Only a farm door for the tiny restroom, so you hear each flush quite loudly. Water pressure for the shower is non existent. Walls are thin, you hear every sound from upstairs, rooms next door, and the street. There are no black out curtains or door guard, so the room is very bright in the morning. Pillows are lumpy and about 11 inches in height, and not good for neck support. No toiletries here either. Only good thing is that it seems decently clean. Overall, this is the worst place I've ever stayed at. If you enjoy sleep and comfort, booking is not recommended.

Totally loved this about the room! The staff was also very welcoming and helpful. Check-in was fast. Check-out was done online from my phone, and I was able to leave the key cards inside the room. THE SEMI-BAD... This must be an older hotel because I could hear someone snoring in the room next door. The walls are thin! Even with my sleep sounds app on, basically next to my ear, I could still hear the snoring. It was so hard to sleep. THE STRANGE, HAHA... Okay, I'm pretty sure the room was haunted! It must've been 1am or later. The blanket tugged upwards... two times, quite hard. I was wide awake. I know what I felt, and no one can change my mind. Prior to this, I kept hearing a random tap inside my room, here and there. Not a lot, but enough to notice. It might've been just normal building sounds, but who knows!

This place is an incredible value for the cost, again I feel like I need to gate keep this but yelp is about sharing....you're right across from the ocean, with some of the best views in La Jolla. We stayed in Room 208 and while there are no elevators or luggage carts (so pack light or be ready for some stairs), the oceanfront views totally made up for it. The hotel has a charming, older vibe, but it's well maintained and fits the beachy, Balinese-inspired theme perfectly. Our room came with an above-average kitchen setup, which made it easy to prep snacks and simple meals during our stay. Free water bottles in the lobby were a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (7:30-10:30 a.m.) was way better than your standard hotel spread, fresh, even the bacon was crispy but not over cooked, tasty, and filling. It's just a short walk to the beach, the kid-friendly "children's pool" area, and of course, the famous La Jolla seals. Be warned: La Jolla has its fair share of hills, so if you're bringing a stroller, be ready for a bit of a workout. This was our first time staying here, but it's already looking like it'll become our annual end-of-summer tradition. Next time, we're definitely staying longer.

(For the record, no one in our room was jumping). Customer service/front desk: the hours are incorrect both online and on the recorded message. They say they are open from 9 am-5 pm daily. This is not true. They open at 10 am on weekends. We found this out the hard way after calling, texting and going to the front desk (between 9-9:30 am) on a Sunday after running out of toilet paper during our recent 4 day stay. Parking: they don't have sufficient parking but try to reserve parking ahead of time if you can. We got lucky with street parking but if you go during a busier time, that might not be the case.

Hotel notes: Check in is easy and thankfully they don't charge an additional fee for parking. The parking spots are SMALL, we had an SUV and were playing a fine line staying within the spots. All dog rooms are on the first floor. We had booked a single queen bed room, dog friendly. The bed was not a queen, MAYBE a full, maybe a little bigger than a twin mattress it was so small. Maybe if we were hobbit sized we would fit, but it was ridiculously small. The room is hot, the a/c did not feel like it fully kicked in until 4am. We were sweating in there. I honestly didn't even want to take pictures the place is so run down and I regret it. There is a dresser, small table and mirror cabinet. And a bathroom but size of a small closet. The toilet is so close to the sink, it's ridiculous. We could barely fit in it and the shower did NOT look clean. Near the Hotel: Across the street (unless the drummers cortège is there, they played until about 2am) there is a grassy area where dogs can relieve themselves, but if your dog is skittish AT ALL, it will be very hard to get them to go. There are multiple cafes, food spots and restaurants within a walking distance of the hotel. Very convenient. Beach notes: Beach is across the street but unless you are specifically at the dog beach be aware of the hours with pets. Summer (April 1 - October 31): Dogs are not allowed on the beach, boardwalk, or adjacent parks between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Allowed Hours: You may walk your dog on the regular beach only before 9:00 AM or after the evening cutoff (4:00 PM or 6:00 PM depending on the season), but they must be on a maximum 8-foot leash. More hotel notes: We booked two nights and canceled the second night the room was so uncomfortable. Thankfully they didn't charge us for not staying both nights and only for the one night. This was a birthday trip I was looking forward to for weeks, and HATED staying here so much. Save yourself the money and time and just book at a hotel a little bit away from the beach. They 100% Jack up the prices due to the location but just don't do it. It's not worth it.

It may not be the most updated hotel on the boardwalk, but it has everything you need. The staff is always welcoming, the house keeping staff are friendly and trustworthy, the parking lot is gated and secured by a guard throughout the day, the rooms are always clean the grounds are well maintained, and after all the years of being loyal visitors, we have yet to experience anything negative at this property. I love that the grounds are secure and you can allow your children to go into the courtyard area and play the provided games with peace of mind- knowing that they'll be safe. They provide tons of outdoor seating options and grills for tenants, which makes cooking a breeze. In order to enter from the beach/boardwalk, you must have a room key to enter the premises- another awesome perk. This keeps all the riff-raft out of the area. &At night, they also require a room key to enter through the front of the building- which is a newer feature, and much appreciated. You can leave your beach toys & chairs outside your room without worrying about someone coming to steal it. We have locked our bikes up downstairs in the courtyard area & nobody messes with them. This is such a great place to stay & an amazing tradition that our family has. We look forward to our visit every May!
