The Samesun hostel in OB is one that my wife has always wanted to stay in, but was unable to while she was a resident of San Diego. And suddenly, when we found ourselves in immediate need of a place to stay, what better opportunity? We staggered in just before 11 p.m., which was the final cut off for booking a room. Lucky us! We end up paying $39 a piece, and somehow I ended up as the only residents in our room, so we had it all to ourselves! We hit the nearby bars with some friends, and crashing our bunks around 1:30 am. Waking up, hungover and hungry, we hit the strip for some breakfast and shopping, returning before checkout at 11 a.m. Oh the usual hostel amenities are here: laundry room, communal kitchen, private and public bathrooms with showers, a courtyard with hammocks and chairs. You can rent surfboards here, as well as private lockers, etc. They even have coached yoga classes on Sundays, apparently. We skipped out on that, for obvious reasons. Everything about the hostel was eminently clean, almost to the point of sparkling. I have no idea how long this place has been here, but judging from how long my wife has wanted to stay here, at least 10 years, but you wouldn't know it by looking at it. The decor is distinctly hippie-esque, with a psychadelic, Grateful Dead meets surfer dude vibe. All the staff that we've encountered were helpful and friendly, and didn't mind us stumbling in, drunk off of our asses, in the middle of the night. I'm sure they're used to it by now. Considering the entire experience here at Samesun, my wife and I both agree that the next time we are in San Diego, we might just make this our primary hotel. It's fun, it's cheap, it's clean, and while it may not be close to any major transportation hubs, who could complain about being a hop, skip and a jump from one of the best beaches in San Diego? And who knows? Maybe I'll even try surfing next time?

Pelicans on the bay and Red Marlin had delicious dishes for various price points. They also had Market, an early morning option for grab and go breakfast and lunch. -pool options. Though it could get a little crowded, the resort has a large enough pool area so you can space out. They even have cabanas. - quick check in and out. I'll say the front desk staff has the process down. -shipping and receiving was seamless. I had no issues receiving and shipping freight and ups shipments. Now for my cons. -several rooms need updating. Be it minor fixtures or whole carpets that need to be removed. Some meeting spaces and sleeping rooms had a moist smell to it. -front desk with conflicting information. As a conference attendee I was giving several bits of different information about parking and parking charges. - hot tub is small and was packed full of kids. Hard to relax when kids are bouncing in and out. I'd appreciate an adult only hot tub if they could accommodate. Outside of that, hotel staff was courteous and helpful. I did enjoy my stay. I got "the regency" sandwich and a caramel iced coffee. Very yummy. No real cons aside from the room facing dumpsters. Don't be afraid to ask for an upgrade. An extra 40 bucks a night wasn't bad at all.

It wasn't all bad, and Laura and Maine were both kind and helpful. However, I honestly feel our trip may have been doomed from the start. We originally booked a rental right on the bay and planned our entire trip around that location. With a 9-month-old, we wanted to be within walking distance of attractions, shops, and restaurants rather than constantly driving. Less than a week before our trip, we were notified that our condo was unavailable due to a roach infestation following a death in the building. Understandably, the situation was unfortunate, but no alternative was available for our full stay. The only option was a unit in Pacific Beach for part of our stay. With so little notice, we felt our options were limited, especially since this was our anniversary and first vacation with our baby. Upon arrival, someone was parked in our designated spot. After nearly 30 minutes of trying to contact someone, I reached Maine, who was helpful. Fortunately, the driver appeared and moved the car. We were also promised two bikes, but there was only one, and its tires were flat. Most of the bikes in the garage appeared extremely worn and poorly maintained. Unfortunately, we arrived during a triple-digit heat wave. Although the listing disclosed that there was no AC, I believe providing a way to cool the unit during extreme heat is a safety and comfort issue, especially for guests with an infant. The fans provided simply circulated hot air, and the thin blinds did little to block the afternoon sun, which poured directly into the unit. We eventually learned there was a portable AC unit in the closet, but it was locked up and required an additional rental fee of nearly $300. I feel this should have been provided at no cost under the circumstances. Thankfully, maintenance arrived within a couple of hours to unlock and set it up. However, it only cooled the bedroom, leaving the rest of the unit extremely uncomfortable. While our baby napped, we had to keep the blinds closed and use fans and cool towels just to stay comfortable. The bedroom was tiny, so spending the day there wasn't practical. The unit itself is desperately in need of updating and deep cleaning. The furniture, flooring, paint, and decor all look decades old. The pillows, couches, and rugs were visibly grungy, and we were not comfortable letting our baby crawl on them. Thankfully, we brought a play mat. The flooring was chipped and scratched throughout, and at sunset, dust and what appeared to be pet hair were visible in random areas. The blinds need replacing, as they offer almost no privacy or light blocking. These improvements wouldn't necessarily require a huge investment but would make a significant difference. We also had an outlet issue near the TV that left us without a TV or Wi-Fi for the first few days. The lack of Wi-Fi made accessing the online guest portal difficult, and the printed information in the unit contained incorrect codes. Maintenance eventually resolved the outlet issue. The kitchen had decent appliances, although we never cooked because the heat made using the oven seem unbearable. The outdoor amenities also need attention. The lounge chairs are old and sun-damaged, and the pool bathroom was disgusting. Guests are instructed to shower before using the pool, but the outdoor shower is no longer available. Overall, the facility feels run-down. The laundry room was closed most of our stay, although it was eventually updated. A couple of nights into our trip, there was a murder a block away near Crystal Pier. I understand this was beyond the rental agency's control, but it was frightening. There were also frequently homeless individuals directly in front of the unit, which affected our comfort. Pros: * Excellent location directly on Pacific Beach * Beautiful ocean view * Comfortable bed and pillows * Decent-sized bathroom with a large shower * Walkable location with plenty of shops and restaurants * Decent kitchen appliances * Pool and jacuzzi * Designated parking * Hose outside the unit for rinsing off * Beach toys, chairs, and boogie boards available * Grill available * Secure code access to the garage and lobby Ultimately, I appreciate Nancy's Vacation Rentals trying to help us navigate an unexpected situation, and I recognize that some circumstances were outside their control. However, between the last-minute relocation, extreme heat, unexpected AC expense, cleanliness concerns, and overall condition of the unit and amenities, the experience was disappointing. I wish things had worked out differently, especially since this was such a special trip for our family.

Hotel notes: Check in is easy and thankfully they don't charge an additional fee for parking. The parking spots are SMALL, we had an SUV and were playing a fine line staying within the spots. All dog rooms are on the first floor. We had booked a single queen bed room, dog friendly. The bed was not a queen, MAYBE a full, maybe a little bigger than a twin mattress it was so small. Maybe if we were hobbit sized we would fit, but it was ridiculously small. The room is hot, the a/c did not feel like it fully kicked in until 4am. We were sweating in there. I honestly didn't even want to take pictures the place is so run down and I regret it. There is a dresser, small table and mirror cabinet. And a bathroom but size of a small closet. The toilet is so close to the sink, it's ridiculous. We could barely fit in it and the shower did NOT look clean. Near the Hotel: Across the street (unless the drummers cortège is there, they played until about 2am) there is a grassy area where dogs can relieve themselves, but if your dog is skittish AT ALL, it will be very hard to get them to go. There are multiple cafes, food spots and restaurants within a walking distance of the hotel. Very convenient. Beach notes: Beach is across the street but unless you are specifically at the dog beach be aware of the hours with pets. Summer (April 1 - October 31): Dogs are not allowed on the beach, boardwalk, or adjacent parks between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Allowed Hours: You may walk your dog on the regular beach only before 9:00 AM or after the evening cutoff (4:00 PM or 6:00 PM depending on the season), but they must be on a maximum 8-foot leash. More hotel notes: We booked two nights and canceled the second night the room was so uncomfortable. Thankfully they didn't charge us for not staying both nights and only for the one night. This was a birthday trip I was looking forward to for weeks, and HATED staying here so much. Save yourself the money and time and just book at a hotel a little bit away from the beach. They 100% Jack up the prices due to the location but just don't do it. It's not worth it.

This place is a joke. We stayed here (unfortunately) kinda last minute for my daughter's 17th…read morebirthday, and invited several of her close friends. I was embarrassed to have them here. This place has been poorly, and I mean poorly redone by someone with zero skills. We texted the owner, agent, whatever he was, and told him that the smoke and carbon monoxide detector was missing. He never responded. Last night we had a bunch if younger kids partying next door. They weren't even that loud really, but you could hear damn near every word through the walls, and the stairs are only separated by a wall. Obviously not carpeted on their side.... The entry doors are hollow steel and you hear everything from all the units. The door to the common hallway is dragging on the tile they installed and screaches very loudly everytime its opened. The stairway smells like piss. The title installed in the commons have ruined the continuity of the steps, and landings causing trip hazards. Today the new occupants showed up for the unit vacated by partyers, and had to wait over an hour to get in because of the cleaners. The place smelled like armpit, curry, and pinesol. Not even really cleaned either. They wanted to use the bbq, and firepit, but the fire pit was non existent, and the bbq was a rusted filthy mess. The common area in the courtyard was non usable due to building materials and filth. The 2 owners/agents and a maintenance guy were there trying to clean it but too little too late. One of them asked us how we were enjoying the view, and I replied its nasty. He heard its nice... my wife asked him about the smoke detector and he went and bought one. He did come up later to install it. I fished for some insight as to who remodeled, and he said "they" did the work. There is a reason that there are a bunch of stock photos of the surrounding areas, jet skis, and the beach. Its because this place is a dump. They have tried to put mustard, and mayo on this turd, but the fact of the matter, is that it still tastes like crap. I do remodeling for a living, and everything they have touched is pure trash. The kitchen cabinets are painted trash under newer quartz tops. The shower downstairs is so poorly tiled, that water damage is eminent. The title floor in the kitchen has raised corners and trip hazards. The paint job is terrible, and is already filthy. Vanity top downstairs is separated and loose in several areas. The balcony handrail is attached to a 1x12 and is very loose. One good push, and someone will get hurt. The carpet adhesive left behind, and metal trim on the patio Is peeling off, and I tripped on a piece that my toe caught.The the carpet on the stairs is filthy. The new outside wood siding accent is buckled and has sharp edges that can catch your skin. The couch is damaged, uncomfortable, and stained. The barstools are not suitable to sit in for more than 10 minutes. I literally could go on for an hour. This was over 300 dollars a night on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Supposedly it gets up to 900 a night during peak. STAY ELSEWHERE!!! I tried to take some pictures of what it really looks like but my wife was getting mad. I hope this long winded review makes you think twice before staying here. Hopeful that the owners see this and fix some of these issues. But the sad fact is that people will stay here, and they'll get their money. What a dump.

Less than a month before my stay Jeff and a co-host, Sisco cancelled my reservation saying they had to "redo" something in the unit and had to start on it immediately. They then stated the unit would not be available during my dates. Doing further research the unit was available to book weeks before my date. Then after I was cancelled and given my refund the dates I chose became available for a price increase equaling over $3500 plus fees. They most likely took a $50 penalty on their end. I could not change my dates and booked months out for a reason. I had to scramble and find a new stay because these guys wanted to be greedy. They realized they had an error for the price I was given and decided they wanted to cancel me for more money. As a host all they have to do is tell Airbnb that they are "fixing" the unit, then able to cancel someone. If I cancel my trip I lose half or all of my money to a host. This is not ok and should not be allowed and although nothing can really be done potential clients need to know how these folks handle business. I have also stayed at this unit before with a group of friends which is why I was familiar with it. I would NEVER book with this realty group again or this host.

We also love that the rooms come with irons/ironing boards/microwave/fridge/coffee maker, hair dryer, etc. May not be "the top" but this is definitely a great choice for families! TRAVEL TIP: From our last visit, I recommend checking the schedule for Pechanga Arena on Sports Arena Boulevard. If you are coming from I5, and there is an event going in or getting out- you WILL Get stuck in traffic on Sports Arena Boulevard!
