Samesun Ocean Beach - San Diego - Upstairs Dorm Hall

Samesun Ocean Beach - San Diego

I've stayed at several hostels throughout Southern California. Samesun Ocean Beach is by far one of…read morethe better ones I've booked. . After staying downtown all weekend, I wanted a more quiet and calm spot for my last night in SD. I booked through Priceline and prepaid my stay for the night at $41 in an all female 6-bed dorm. Mark greeted me upon my arrival early Sunday evening. He was kind, professional and informative. We actually are both from the same home state, coincidentally. After checking me in, he gave me a tour. . The place is huge and very clean. Very much donned in a surfer bohemian aesthetic. They have surfboards for rent, but extra towels, blankets and yoga mats are free to use at will. There's a tv room that leads to the courtyard/lounge and kitchen areas. Plenty of seating either on small tables, benches or the patio couches. There's also a hammock, a front porch with swing chairs, a bar, & vending machines. A couple of clear door fridges are in the lounge area and duplicate in the kitchen. There are top left shelves designated to abandoned foods that are up for grabs. The kitchen is like an island surrounded by the lounge, courtyard and downstairs dorm hall. This arrangement allows the kitchen to remain open 24 hours as the dorm hall side is closed off with a sliding door. Most hostels close their kitchen at night to not disturb other guests, but this is most convenient. They also offer free tea accesible 24 hours and free breakfast from 7am-9am. . There are several single occupancy restrooms and two communal ones designated for men and women. My room was tight quarters, but overall functional. There's a nook with an overhead light next to the bed and adjacent to an outlet. The room has a big window which my fellow roomies did the right thing and opened it wide. The room also has a mirror vanity and sink which was helpful if I didn't want to go out to the hall to use the restroom. The sheets were clean, smelled phreshly washed and the blanket was thick and warm. . It's also not far from downtown. I commuted there via the trolley and the bus which took about 45 minutes. You can cheat the system and take an Uber part of the way to or from Old Town (the bus leg of the trip). I would definitely stay here again and hope to have more time in Ocean Beach. There are many restaurants, cafes and shops nearby and literally steps from the water. If you need quality accommodations, in a great location on a budget, Samesun will get the job done! . Sidenote: There are only stairs inside and outside of the building.

Very family friendly and great to bring all ages. The conference facilities were very professional and organized. The staff were friendly and kept everything on schedule and stocked. Our group was over 400 and there was never an empty beverage, condiment, or supply container. Meals and happy hour appetizers were very delicious. Not the expected "conference fair." Every detail from beautiful food displays to quality and delicious options for every dietary need. Located right on the Quivira Basin, views were peaceful and in walking distance to many eateries and recreational activities. The facilities were well maintained. Pool & spa areas were clean and welcoming. You need to walk a bit to the gym and pool, but being outside is the be of the best parts. They offer a small park-like area with outdoor games located right next to the gift shop. If you take a short walk, you can enjoy the passing boats and wildlife just feet away. Most rooms have great views and mine had a balcony overlooking the dock of boats, seals, fish, and occasional passersby. Overall, the experience left nothing to be desired.

This opens our lines of communication just in case I have questions or needs that could be provided prior to me checking in. My concierge was able to upgrade us and our room was all ready when we checked in. I'm not a fan of the $50 per night parking fee. If you will be attending Sea World or go on any excursions, then this is a great location. But there's basically no food options here or within walking distance. So just keep that in mind and bring your food/snacks. Luckily, there's a mini fridge in the room that you can use. The property itself gives off Hawaii vibes. From the lobby to the grounds. The room was nice and clean and smelled really nice. Not sure what scent they sprayed in the room, but definitely was calming to me. Our restroom was a bit on the small side though. It gets crowded with 2 people in there. The shower had good pressure and it's a full on shower, not a tub/shower combo. My 2 biggest issue with this room was that the latch on the sliding door did not latch unless you are holding it up. I did mention this to the staff member when I checked out so that maintenance can fix it for the next guests. I know that the possibility of someone breaking in via the balcony was minuscule, but the worry was still there. The other issue I have is that there's only 2 outlets behind the main TV. So if you have a streaming box or something else you need power for, you won't be able to use the ports here as 1 is for the TV and the other one is a device that will charge you $75/day if it's unplugged. I wish they would provide extra ports for you to be able to use your travel router or AppleTV. The other thing that I was disappointed in is the internet speed. It was pretty slow and not great for streaming or if there are multiple devices connected. But overall, this is a very nice hotel, but just realize that there isn't anything around within walking distance besides the marina and park.

However, there is room for ALOT of improvement. The layout of this hotel reminds me of an unmanaged motel. You have to climb some stairs to get to your room if you're not on the first floor. The lobby and the overall atmosphere doesn't give a luxury experience. There is also only one restaurant in the resort. Not a lot of choices to choose from which made it hard when we were hungry at night. Towels had brown stains on it prior to us using it and the linens feel rough. There was also no shampoo and conditioner so we had to ask for more. Not sure if this is a housekeeping issue. Shower pressure was also extremely low. They knocked on our door asking when we were leaving. Check out time is 11am and this was around 8am. This really threw me and my family off. However, their pool was very big and the water was great. Food was good and lost and found also redeemed a bag I lost. My verdict? I will probably choose a different hotel to stay at if you want a more luxury experience here in San Diego. Grateful for my time here but I will not be back again.

Stay away from these properties at all costs. They will scam you…read more Jeffrey R (who claims to be Jeffrey G on air bnb) and his partner Sisco are absolute frauds - their main goal is to stack additional and unwarranted charges on top of your stay. We rented the property at 717 Island Ct for a weekend. Upon night 1, they quickly enforced their no noise past 10pm rule, and used aggressive language and behavior to dish us a $500 fine. We paid the fine as we recognized we broke this rule, although they could not prove it. The worst part of all came at checkout. Sisco reached out to me after we left and was furious about my group "damaging his walls" by coloring all over the walls of the house with a pencil. He sent me videos of the residence with markings all over the walls. "How could you do this? The disrespect. I will be notifying Air Bnbs and sending you charges for damage". Anybody with a brain cell can tell that these drawings upon the walls were done by a child. Confused, I denied the claims as I knew I left the place in better shape than I found it. He insisted it was my group, cussing me out and calling me disrespectful. I continue to object and got air bnb involved. Air bnb notified me that Sisco and Jeffrey have a HISTORY of fraudulent claims against customers. I told Sisco I knew that. Sisco then admitted that the video he sent to me, the one claiming I did the drawings, was an old video taken after a PREVIOUS GUEST. I will say, neither Sisco nor Jeffrey seems like very bright individuals, but was surprised that anybody would ever do this - let alone ADMIT their OWN FRAUD. They admitted to sending me a video from a prior experience and guest - knowing that my group had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DRAWINGS on the way, and trying to get me to pay for the damage. Just to make this whole property, experience, and host and even bigger joke - the place did not come with toilet paper, no blankets for several "sleeping locations", no dishwasher soap (and they request you wash the dishes), and they watch you closely through an outdoor security camera. Stay away from this place and these clowns. Hope this helps someone one day!

This place is a joke. We stayed here (unfortunately) kinda last minute for my daughter's 17th…read morebirthday, and invited several of her close friends. I was embarrassed to have them here. This place has been poorly, and I mean poorly redone by someone with zero skills. We texted the owner, agent, whatever he was, and told him that the smoke and carbon monoxide detector was missing. He never responded. Last night we had a bunch if younger kids partying next door. They weren't even that loud really, but you could hear damn near every word through the walls, and the stairs are only separated by a wall. Obviously not carpeted on their side.... The entry doors are hollow steel and you hear everything from all the units. The door to the common hallway is dragging on the tile they installed and screaches very loudly everytime its opened. The stairway smells like piss. The title installed in the commons have ruined the continuity of the steps, and landings causing trip hazards. Today the new occupants showed up for the unit vacated by partyers, and had to wait over an hour to get in because of the cleaners. The place smelled like armpit, curry, and pinesol. Not even really cleaned either. They wanted to use the bbq, and firepit, but the fire pit was non existent, and the bbq was a rusted filthy mess. The common area in the courtyard was non usable due to building materials and filth. The 2 owners/agents and a maintenance guy were there trying to clean it but too little too late. One of them asked us how we were enjoying the view, and I replied its nasty. He heard its nice... my wife asked him about the smoke detector and he went and bought one. He did come up later to install it. I fished for some insight as to who remodeled, and he said "they" did the work. There is a reason that there are a bunch of stock photos of the surrounding areas, jet skis, and the beach. Its because this place is a dump. They have tried to put mustard, and mayo on this turd, but the fact of the matter, is that it still tastes like crap. I do remodeling for a living, and everything they have touched is pure trash. The kitchen cabinets are painted trash under newer quartz tops. The shower downstairs is so poorly tiled, that water damage is eminent. The title floor in the kitchen has raised corners and trip hazards. The paint job is terrible, and is already filthy. Vanity top downstairs is separated and loose in several areas. The balcony handrail is attached to a 1x12 and is very loose. One good push, and someone will get hurt. The carpet adhesive left behind, and metal trim on the patio Is peeling off, and I tripped on a piece that my toe caught. The the carpet on the stairs is filthy. The new outside wood siding accent is buckled and has sharp edges that can catch your skin. The couch is damaged, uncomfortable, and stained. The barstools are not suitable to sit in for more than 10 minutes. I literally could go on for an hour. This was over 300 dollars a night on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Supposedly it gets up to 900 a night during peak. STAY ELSEWHERE!!! I tried to take some pictures of what it really looks like but my wife was getting mad. I hope this long winded review makes you think twice before staying here. Hopeful that the owners see this and fix some of these issues. But the sad fact is that people will stay here, and they'll get their money. What a dump.
