Highly Recommend Beach City Stairs We recently completed a staircase renovation project in our Southern California home. Like many homeowners embarking on a renovation, we researched extensively and requested bids from three different companies. One was a full-service remodeling organization, another was a smaller general contractor, and the third was Beach City Stairs. We ultimately chose Beach City Stairs because of their deep expertise and specialization in staircase construction and renovation. From the beginning, it was clear that working with a company dedicated specifically to stairs would make a significant difference in the outcome. Kenny, who initially met with us to take measurements, review current code requirements, and scope the project, was outstanding. He was communicative, knowledgeable, professional, and friendly--instilling confidence from day one. When the project began, we were equally impressed with the onsite team. They were an absolute dream to work with--meticulous, skilled, professional, and courteous. I'm extremely disappointed with this company. First, they installed wood plugs diagonally using a completely different wood species, making them extremely obvious and poorly done. I had to catch this mistake myself. They did fix it, but it should have been done right the first time. They also installed a newel post at the bottom of my stairs that had multiple markings and didn't match the other newels. I had to pay out of pocket for a replacement, and they took back the original to reuse on another project without giving me any credit for it. Most concerning, they did not provide a temporary railing during construction, which is required by California Building Code to prevent falls. I have four kids and two dogs. When I asked for a barrier to keep everyone safe, they told me to "use boxes or lawn furniture" and "zip tie those together," despite their contract stating they would install a movable temporary railing as a deterrent. When it came time to install the metal balusters, they couldn't figure out the correct spacing for the downstairs portion of the railing. Because the upstairs pattern was already installed, it was too late to match, so I had to settle for different patterns upstairs and downstairs. The stain was supposed to match my stairs. Initially, I thought it did based on the upstairs railing and even complimented the work. The next day, I realized the bottom railing was completely orange and did not match the floor at all. I reached out, and they eventually came back out, but told me the stain "matched close enough" and that the problem wasn't the stain but the wood itself having different color variations, and there was nothing they could do about it. My stairs are a beautiful natural oak color, they stained the railing bottom railing yellow/orange. See pictures Finally, I paid for two days of stain labor, but they only came for one day. I should be credited for the extra day or have the stain issue fixed. Between the poor quality, safety violations, and lack of accountability, I cannot recommend this company. read more

We used beach city to redo our stair railing. They worked seamlessly with our flooring company to work together on this project. Our initial assessment of the completed job was a five star rating. We then started to inspect the work and noticed a lot of discrepancies. My wife made numerous attempts to call the company and get (1) discrepancy fixed, but we were never contacted or had any follows ups. The protect, which was to replace our wood balusters with iron was successful and we're happy. The attention to the details is where we feel let down. First, I would like to say that Tom was one of the best contractors I have had the pleasure of working with in all the contractors we had come in while gutting and remolding our house in 6 weeks. Tom came in and gave me a quote that never changed unless I added another service into the job! You can tell he is very passionate about making sure the details are on point and his customers are more then pleased. He kept me in the loop every step of the way throughout our staircase remold. We replaced our 1970's white iron staircase railing with a gorgeous Maple and stainless steel ballusters. I researched about a dozen companies before settling on Beach City Stairs. I verified licensure, worker's compensation insurance, etc. I checked Angie's List, Yelp and called references. Hey - spending a few thousand dollars, I want to make sure I'm doing business with the right people! Kevin Label was great to work with. On time. Professional. Respectful. Great guy. I don't know the first thing about staircases so he educated me on the new regulations regarding height and gave me a rundown of how each day would play out (Day One: remove old staircase and begin build. Day Two: install rest of wood. Day Three: the finishers stained and finished and Day Four: was the ballasters). Easy Peasy. Shane and Travis and the rest of the crew were great. Each day we would review what was going to be done that day. And it was done exactly they said it would. They were a little late on one day because of traffic, but other than that everything went off without a hitch. For those of you about to get your stairs redone. Here is a tip: Don't underestimate the dust after the staining and finishers are done. These guys did a great job of sealing everything off, but that dust is so fine, it somehow finds its way through and leaves a super fine dust on everything. So be prepared. The crew told me that would happen, so I wasn't surprised. My favorite part (besides finishing the job on time and on budget) was the custom stain color. They custom-mixed the perfect stain to coordinate with my floors. It looks AMAZING. I highly recommend Beach City Stairs. A great value and a great quality of work. I'm going to try and update this review with photos and you'll see from the pictures that there is some touch up painting that needs to be done along the white wood under the moldings. I told Beach City Stairs to not worry about that part that I would have my painters sand and repaint that section since they are going to be here next week to do some other painting around the house. I'm so happy I selected Beach City Stairs to do my stair case. I found the number on the home magazine, called and scheduled an appointment with Tom, but our schedules kept conflicting. I was anxious to know what the quote would be. After 3 re-scheduled we finally met, and I was happy with the quote. I remember Tom asking if I wanted to get a skirt, I was torn because I wasn't going to change my carpet. He said it would be better to get it done now but it was my decision. We requested a quote and a date/time was agreed upon for the in home visit. The representative never showed up, a phone was not received to advise they may be late, nobody would answer the office line during business hours, and a message was left. Time is money and first impressions mean a lot when it pertains to business. If this company cannot respect a customers time, which in this case I took time off from work to meet with them, then I cannot in good faith recommend them. Shout out to BCS - I did my shopping and homework, and these guys were who I picked, after three comparable proposals. Tom at BCS came out on schedule, did a thorough walk-through, and came back with a proposal that was right on my budget, and exactly what I was looking for. I will say that the job took longer than I was expecting, but their attention to detail (particularly Carlos, who spent a lot of time working hard on every curve and custom piece, and Josh, who was perfect on finish work) shows in the finished product. BCS was easy to work with, was communicative, and let me know in advance if there were going to be any delays or issues, and did everything they could to stay on schedule. If there was a problem, and I reached out, they answered quickly and courteously. You don't refresh your stairs often. Pick someone you can work with, and feel comfortable with. Unhappy customer. Beach City Stairs started a job in August 2020, but never finished the job. I had to bring in other contractors to finish the work, and then needed to have a contractor correct a structural item that was not done correctly. I wasn't planning to leave a review, but now, 1 1/2 years later some of the stair treads are broken. I will not be contacting Beach City Stairs to correct the flawed work... I will have another contractor make the repairs. Overall very poor experience. read more

I'm guessing this is a newer company because the owner Kevin definitely needs to learn a thing or two about running this business. My husband organized our stair project through the owner Kevin but once he got our down payment he was never to be seen again. He told us our stairs would take 4-5 days which is ridiculous. It ended up taking 3-4 days a week over 3 weeks. One big issue was Kevin never showed up on his job site and he only had ONE guy out working on our stairs . The guy that was here was good but how can one person get a job done in a timely manner?! There were a couple days of demo followed by days of constructing the new stairs and then finally 3 days of painting and another day to put the balusters in. I had to be our project manager checking every little thing everyday because a lot was not being done as we wanted. We had sent him numerous pictures of stairs during our designing process but he never when over many of the details that should be addressed prior to construction like if the newels would be painted or stained, how high the banisters should be etc... These are HUGE things and they were both done wrong and then when they had to be redone we were charged for it and made to feel like it was our fault when Kevin had never confirmed both items. When I would email Kevin with issues he would never email me back. He'd end up talking to my husband but never acknowledging me or my emails which was annoying. I even sent him an email towards the end of our project and I still haven't heard back. One of the issues I have still is that the white paint they used on our stairs does not match the white paint in our house which I was told it would (I'll post a pic). We use "Swiss coffee" as the white in our house which is a standard color and premixed at Home Depot. We've never had a problem having it matched, even when we had cabinetry painted so why it doesn't match is beyond me. It's basically ultra white and an eyesore. I addressed this in my last email but never heard back.... I probably would have done a 3 star rating had I gotten a reply email. If you are ready to have one guy work on your stairs for a couple weeks and to be your own project manager then go for it. Our stairs turned out good but it was an annoying project because there was never anyone here to check the work or to make sure things were being done correctly. I had to personally check the work everyday and then organize what needed to be done. I can't say enough great things about the whole process with Beach City Stairs. We had an older railing that wasn't up to today's childproofing standards so we either needed to call a babyproofing company or replace the the railings entirely. Given that babyproofing would have been pretty expensive and probably wouldn't have looked that great, we decided to invest the money into new railings. Kevin (the owner) came out to our house and provided a very detailed estimate free of charge. He also showed us dozens of options and gave us recommendations at multiple price points as well. We also got estimates from a couple other places. Beach City Stairs wasn't the cheapest, but we felt most comfortable with them. A few days before the installation, we got a call to reconfirm the start date. On day 1, they were right on time and were extremely polite and accommodating. We have curved railings going all the way upstairs, so it was pretty amazing that they could build them from scratch. After a couple days of construction, the railings were stained by an equally polite and efficient crew. The balusters were put in the following day and everything looks amazing. Their staining crew will come back to do some last minute touch ups, but it looks amazing already. The craftsmanship is second to none. We are extremely happy and definitely will recommend them to friends and family. read more

Can I add 4 more stars??? OK. Let's start at the beginning. Our goal was to move to a more contemporary vision and let me tell you...the process is extremely difficult. We are not designers: Stage 1 was our Kitchen, we hired Debbie Nisetta of Roomscapes and they did a good job Stage 2 we enlisted the help of Interior designer Sandy Kay of Kay designs. She was awesome and helped us through the interior design. All of these were MAJOR projects. Stage 3 in this process was the stair railing. We did not want to demo the complete stairs- just the railing. We had several companies bid the project in southern Cal and finally decided on Beach City Stairs because Tom seemed like a straight up guy that cared so much about the company and their work. Now This is the most important part of my review........ Out of all the workmen we had in our home Beach City was far and above the best. 10 times better. Tom was patient and knowledgeable. He turned out to be THE man. He helped with design, prepared the estimate and developed the work schedule. He laid out a descriptive of each stage of production and time allotted for each. He explained in detail how it was going to be built. Carlos was our builder. I cant say enough great things about this guy. His attention to detail was the best I've seen in 10 years of work we have had done. Just look at the pictures. At the end of the day he worked overtime just to clean up. He approached our home as if it was his. So Tom and Beach city stairs are responsible for the work and the people they bring in to do the work. On another note. They had unsupervised access to my home everyday for 2-3 weeks. I trusted them through out the process. I would not hesitate one second to have them back again. Just completed stairs renovation with Beach City Stairs. The project started out by getting 3 different estimates. At first I was hesitant to hire this company because our(my wife and I) rules in hiring contractors is not only based on Contractor's reviews but also, based on 3 estimates, We always take the estimate priced in the middle. Beach City Stairs had the lowest bid. My wife and I were so glad that we did not follow our rules in hiring contractors because the outcome is way beyond our expectations. Andy, explained to us the details of the project. They try their best to contain any dust just to the immediate area of the stairs. Matt, their carpenter, did an outstanding job installing the stairs. Very professional with almost 30 years experience in the trade. It took about 4 days to complete the demo and installation. I know that the owner, Kevin, really cares about his company, because he and Tom, stopped by, to see my project, meet me, and asked me if I have questions and concern. Andy, Salesman/project manager, is very responsive to all my questions and concern, when I asked him to reschedule the finishing stage from Aug. 30, 2019 to after the Labor day weekend, he made it happen by re-assigning his guys to other projects. This company is very customer oriented. Their employees are very respectful, friendly, very professional, and take pride in their workmanship. Thank you to Josh, Steve, and Benny, who did the sanding, caulking, sealing, staining, and painting. GREAT job! Finally, I want to thank Curtis, who installed the balusters, very beautifully done. Kudos to Beach City Stairs ("BCS") for a job well done. At the tail end of a new loft addition project we determined we needed some help to cut, retrofit and reattach our handrail to a new pony wall at the top of our stairs. Alex with BCS came out right away, even though it was a small job, and after we got to talking I could tell BCS was much more than a "handrail repair" company. After checking out their website and reading Yelp reviews, I grew more and more excited about what could be. I then talked with Alex some more and figured now was as good a time as any to replace our old wood balusters with wrought iron, since we needed to make some retrofits anyway. I spoke with Alex about some deign ideas, and he then put together a proposal for a "turn-key" replacement which included swapping out wood balusters with new wrought iron, sanding and staining the existing handrails, attaching it to the new pony wall and lacquering the end treads and entry posts. Alex was able to put together a good deal and I pulled the trigger shortly thereafter. Essentially one day for demo, sanding, general prep, staining and lacquering and one day to install the new wrought iron balusters and base shoes. Alex even came by to monitor progress and assist with the install! We love our new staircase; it gives a whole new look and feel to the home which looks classy and beautiful.
