Omg y'all... back in California and suddenly craving that Canadian peri-peri... Probably b/c we…read moredon't have a single reasonable halal peri-peri option out here. Whomp whomp! Let me take it back to the start though. When I first discovered this trip to Canada was actually happening and just within a few days, the highlight for me was: NANDOS! Wait for it.... Only to find out (after checking the website and calling around) that none of the Vancouver Nando's are halal. Boooooo! Heartbreak on sight y'all. Found this spot on a website somewhere and verified the locations seemed nice on Yelp! Since the trip's primary purpose was taking my dad to visit his old buddies from Uganda, the itinerary was more "play it by ear". After verifying ALL three locations of Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken are HALAL, I was glad we ended up with this one! The vibe was nice with warm colors, authentic artwork, and simple, friendly service. We ordered a family-style plate and everything was tasty. I tried the medium peri sauce on the side b4 placing the order which had great flavor but was a little too hot for me, so I switched to mild and was given medium and hot on the side! Salad was cold and crisp as it should be! The fries were surprisingly good... maybe it's the Canadian potatoes doing their thing. Mom already said she wants to try the chicken burger next time. I'd definitely return for the wings. The intention was to come back for those wings and burgers but we sadly we didn't get a chance, no worries a window of opportunity to come back eh? Quick tip: There's a parking lot in the back. If you're visiting from outside Canada remember you pay by scanning the barcode on the wall!

I did not know what to expect, but I am glad I tried this place. Shawn's Chicken is a ~Chinese~ fried chicken joint featuring classic choices of spicy or regular chicken. My friend ordered the 3 piece spicy combo and I ordered the 2 piece regular combo. I think the prices are average - the 2 and 3 piece are just a dollar apart so it's probably more value to just get the 3 piece combo. The chicken is prepared fresh on the spot. The skin is very crispy and delicious! There is also a faint seasoning in both the regular and the spicy chicken that makes it quite unique. I can't put my finger on what that flavour is but it's distinct and very Chinese haha. The meat inside is tender and juicy, perfect all around. There are a couple bar seats to dine in but generally I can see people taking it out to eat for the most comfort. I will be back!

We never got any side dishes, nor water, but the chicken was enough to satisfy on its own. Likely to return, but the competition for Korean chicken is generally high with other places offering "inventive" flavors, but Chicko definitely nails each of their offerings well. The chicken meat is the star of each bite. The coating is not too thick or sticky, and the spice hits hard and leaves fast, as intended. The soy is not too sweet, leaving just enough flavor to taste the juices. The cashiers and cooks all appeared to be Korean which is a great sign of high standards. Not too long of a wait and it was clear that the food was made fresh because of the steam when we started eating.
