Every dish is ordered a la carte, and depending on what you order, it could get quite pricey. We opted for the set menu "C" for 4 people at HK$1,250 (approximately US$160) which included: -- A large variety of banchans which were actually quite similar to what you'll find in most Korean BBQ places in the US. Personally, I'm not a big fan of banchans but I did like their version of potato salad and kimchi. The kimchi wasn't too hot and spicy like some other ones that I've had, so for me, it was good. -- Korean raw beef plate (see picture). I can't remember its Korean name but it's the equivalent of a Carpaccio. This was da bomb and was the star of the night. It was absolutely fresh, beefy, flavorful, and delicious. Tip: Dip it lightly in the sauce so it won't overwhelm the natural taste of the beef. It was not exactly raw like Carpaccio or steak tartare, as you could tell from the edges that it's been quickly charred and seared before it's sliced. This's actually the way that I like and prefer. This was beyond yummy and it was so memorable that two weeks later, I can still remember what it tasted like as I am writing this review. -- Three dishes of raw meat for BBQ which included beef ribs, pork and scallops. The quality of the meats was good as expected, and it was also lightly marinated so the natural flavors were retained. We were so tired that night that none of us wanted to lift a finger to BBQ and it was such a relief that our server offered to cook for us. That was awesome. The BBQ meats were good, but nothing spectacular, especially after the stellar "Korean Carpaccio" plate. -- Soup noodles. To save time, our server was preparing our soup using a stove at the empty table next to us while we were eating the BBQ food - that's so cool! (How did she know that I was ready to fall asleep?) The soup noodles were meh and really nothing special, and the portion was rather small. My only issue with this place was that the portions were really small - even by Hong Kong's standard (which is infamous for tiny portions). The soup noodles, when divided into four bowls, were literally 2 soup spoonfuls of noodles for each person. The portions of the BBQ meats were also quite tiny. Moreover, I suspect that they didn't know how to do basic math - the pork plate came with 3 slices of mushrooms (see picture) and the scallop plate came with 6 scallops - and this was a set dinner for 4 people! This was really a 3.5-star experience - it's better than ok but I'm not a fan yet. But based on the portion size (in terms of HK$ and in terms of HK's standard to be fair), I'm rounding it down to 3 stars.

Luckily, Hong Kong is such a paradise where cuisines from around the world are readily available. The shop reminded me of the Korean food I had a lot. Just by looking at their menu, I felt like I'm in Korea again. No jokes. They have deep-fried chicken, fried rice with kimchi and cheese, pig feet and grilled chicken with vegetables. The list can still go on for sometime with the variety choice of dishes. I ordered the 6-pieces cheese grilled rib and the portion was enough to feed 2 people. Apart from the ribs, there were some Korean rice cakes and rice balls with seaweed. The dish was served in a large metal dish and placed on the fire to melt the cheese. Once the bits and pieces of cheese became a cheese paste, an oppa came over to demonstrate how to wrap the cheese around the ribs (I suspected that he is a Korean so it's a real oppa *laughs*) . The cheese rib pleasantly surprised me with their softness, the meat separated from the bones with just a gentle bite. Then I tried to do the cheese-wrapping myself. Well, no doubt some more practice was needed. Tip: don't miss out the riceballs, they act miracles with the cheese! I was pretty full after this, but it's a definite yes for me to return!

Compared to many other Korean restaurants in the area that are often packed and hard to book, Kaya is on the higher end, perhaps that's why you get the better ambience and service that you pay for. All of the dishes we tried were delicious. It's always good to bring a group here so that you can try many dishes. Start with some appetizers like the Korean raw beef (friends who have eaten Korean food with me know that I cannot miss this one.) Then order some meat for barbecue and finish with some cooked dishes like the galbi jim, which is like a sweet beef brisket stew. Another thumbs up for this place is that you don't smell like Korean meat after you leave the restaurant! Isn't that just neat?

I usually order one meat + one carb (ramen or bibimbap) for 2 persons, and that's plenty because I get at least 5-6 sides, free with unlimited refill. Among which I love their steamed eggs and kimchi. The kimchi here is quite spicy but oh-so delicious! Service is quite good as well, especially true on weekdays! The staff came and refilled our sides without prompt! They also came and switched our BBQ plates for us without calling. Again, I went on a weekday when the restaurant wasn't busy. One annoyance was that they didn't change the hot plate for about 20-30 minutes despite continuous request and as you can imagine with the sugars in the marinade, it was a charred mess. We got the quarter size because we want to try other dishes. Crispy roast pork + Char Siu (Barbecue Pork) was on point! The roast pork skin is crispy and tasty. Char Siu is savory and sweet with smoky flavor. The vegetables was simply prepared but so good. It helps break up the greasy food. White rice and noodles for carb. This was a hearty meal. It is on the expensive side compare to other casual Cantonese bbq meats spot.
