BBC is the Chuck E Cheese of lighting. Between the Elvis statue, the merry-go-round, and the popcorn machine, you just might want to check out the lights. There are lots of lights. The sales floor is pretty amazing, you walk up hill, down hill, yes, the floors are a little uneven. It just makes shopping that much more fun. The hard part is actually picking one out since there are so many lights to choose from. I also like the strategically placed benches so my husband can sit and enjoy his popcorn while I take my time to pick out a new light fixture. The sales staff is very helpful and friendly and there are many available. The prices are comparable to the chain home improvement stores, although the brands available can be found at the higher end stores. I never thought shopping for lights could be this fun. I could spend days looking around at all of the stuff they have here - I've spent several hours doing so and that wasn't enough. I remember coming here when I was younger with my dad, enjoying popcorn while he looked for fixtures. They are straight business here with tons of sales associates that will come to help you find what you're looking for, provide suggestions and options, and overall get a collection that works together. If you have pictures of the space that you're looking to update with fixtures show them since they know what works with various sizes, shapes, and colors of rooms. The associate that I dealt with said he works on doing full houses for new builds a few times a week and then fixtures here and there for updates daily so they see a lot of what works and what doesn't work. This place is a labyrinth with rooms and aisles that you will take you to more rooms and aisles where you won't know how to get back. They even have a few rooms of random sports and gambling items for sale or a mug shot and signature of Al Capone for $10,000. The majority of the fixtures are a little pricey yet they are quality and they do service you very well when you're here. They do have the standard lights that are less as well as a clearance section you can shop. Love this place! Finding the right light fixture can be a very overwhelming proposition. After looking at several different stores, my husband and I walked in to this one. We were delighted at the variety in price and style offered here. After a few minutes of browsing we were approached by a store associate who helped us navigate the sea of lights. He knew a lot about each vendor and which styles would complement each other. We ended up purchasing two fixtures and learned a great deal about the differences in LED vs fluorescents. I am so glad that we didn't settle for something at Home Depot or Menards. Tips: Take a lot of measurements at home so you can narrow down what you are looking for when you arrive. Know the price range and the style you would like to go with ahead of time so you don't get overwhelmed. My mom and I stopped into BBC on a Sunday afternoon, and perhaps the busy-ness of the store and the staffing issues are the only reason I would withhold a full 5-star review. First of all, this place is unique. There is eclectic kitsch all over the store, from the mini-merri-go-round for the kids, to the popcorn machine to the random autographed (Brittany Spears, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brett Favre?) plaques hanging all over the store. Most of all though, it's a festival of lighting. Ceiling fans, chandeliers, dome lights, florescent lights, any sort of lights. They have a great selection and a lot of stuff that would fit well (without looking too fake-historic) in a nice south side bungalow like mine. From what I saw, there was anything from the very basic to the very high-end - lots of nice choices in the middle. If you need to do some serious shopping though, maybe take off an afternoon, the rainy Sunday afternoon we showed up, the store was packed within an hour of opening. A decent salesperson was hard to track down. After three hours bouncing from salesperson to salesperson, the very nice owner helped us track down all our purchases and finish the sale. All the purchases were for my mom's house, but I this will be the first place I go to get stuff for my own home. read more

I had been looking to replace a couple of bedroom fixtures, but wasn't finding anything I liked at the larger home improvement stores. I live in a small condo and most lights seem to be made for people in McMansions (both size and style). BBC is a bit tricky to get to if you don't look it up on a map first, but you'll find it. The building an entrance is a bit nondescript so keep an eye out. This place definitely has all the selection you'll need. If you can't find something here, then good luck with every finding anything you like. The prices are good for the brands that they have. At first I was thinking it was a tad on the expensive side compared to the big retailers, but when you put it into perspective of quality and selection it's a really good deal. The only thing I found odd about BBC were the random pieces of both cheap and expensive non-lighting junk. You'll stumble across old junk in some areas (the Osama bin Laden inflatable punching bag was a blast from the past). Also scattered around are autographed pictures. Everything from the cast of the Mary Tyler Moore Show to a frame containing the mug shots of Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby, complete with separate pieces of paper containing their signatures. All for sale. The checkout process is a bit different - even old-school. You have to talk to a sales person in order to get a ticket so you can check out. They may have to go into the back room to get your box, so you might have to wait around while they do that. No big deal, just be prepared. I can't imagine how they would do this any other way considering the layout of the store. It works well and we didn't have to wait too long. I liked BBC because it has a different vibe to it and it allowed me to step outside the shackles of the limited selection found in other retail shops. It's also not as expensive as some of the boutique galleries, so you're not walking around feeling like a poor, broke peasant. Give this gallery a gander and see if you don't agree. read more

Bought an under cabinet light from them 15-16 years ago. It finally gave up the ghost and it was time to move from Halogen to LED technology. I l also have a number or prior purchases. Walked into the store with my wife and we were greeted and asked if we had been there before and if we needed any help. We described what we wanted and in no time we had a sales associate who made sure we had everything we needed. They had everything I wanted and needed and it was quick. I can't say enough good things about this place. For many years I have shopped at BBC for all of the lighting needs at my personal home and at rental properties that I managed. The selection is large and absolutely amazing, and I have purchased beautiful fixtures at prices that compete with Menards and Home Depot's less attractive fixtures. The staff are very personable and professional. They repair fixtures, and sell every kind of light bulb. Plus, it is a museum of fun and wacky things that have absolutely nothing to do with lighting, which makes it so much fun to shop there. Before covid they had a popcorn machine with free bags. An enlightening shopping experience! If you are looking for a statement piece or have a very particular nieche to fill, BBC is your place. If you are looking for something more in the basic spectrum of affordable lighting, I would highly suggest your Home Depot, Lowe's, or Menard's variety of big box hardware stores. We recently purchased an older home replete with some poor-mid 90's lighting choices that are not appropriate for the age and type of house. There are eight bedroom sconces and six living room sconces that are screaming to be replaced. The price ranges for what we were looking for was in the $30-80 range here compared to $17-30 at the big-box stores. Considering the quantity that we need to replace, these purchases will be made elsewhere. However, when it's time to replace our Liberace-style front entry lighting, I'm dropping the coin here. If price isn't an object, BBC is will be your friend. Their selection of high-end lighting is truly spectacular, especially if you have the space for larger pieces. There is also a good selection of lamps, light posts, track lighting, and ceiling fans. I really love the crazy American idol decorations; I'm not talking Clay Aiken, I referring to their Elvis, Marilyn, and James Dean ephemera. Lot of kitschy Route 66-type stuff here on display or for sale. If you have some crazy light bulb that you need to source or your Granny's old lamp that needs to be rewired, BBC is the place to go. If you can't find it or fix it here, just replace it. It's not worth looking any further. read more

Went here for new outside lights and was impressed the minute I walked in--free popcorn. And not just free but good! Staff was helpful. Parking lot is across the street which makes it hard if you need to load a lot of items. I had street parking so was close. Great selection. I thought the prices were appropriate for what my electrician said i would need to pay. they included free light bulbs and a coupon for half off on burger at Sobelmann's. BBC Lighting has been my go-to store for just about anything I've needed to illuminate my various properties over the years. Their prices are light years (pun intended) cheaper than most other retailers, and in some cases - even online retailers. Very rarely (if ever) will a storefront retailer price match an online retailer, but BBC did just that, and the item was even in stock, allowing me to take it home that very day. They even dropped the price yet ANOTHER 10% when I mentioned in passing that I once met one of the owners! On another occasion, the online price of a large dining room drum pendant on BBC's web catalog was identical to that of the same item on Overstock and LampsPlus, but when I went in to purchase the item, the in-store price was nearly $80 cheaper. BONUS! About a year and a half ago, I purchased an expensive table lamp with a half-dome shade made entirely of polished river stones. I had once noticed that the shade looked crooked, and when I attempted to straighten it, I realized that the center cap (with the hole) at the top was manufactured way off center, making it virtually impossible to adjust the position of the shade so as to make it level. For several months that sort of gnawed that me, when upon a recent visit to purchase an item, I casually mentioned this annoyance. They told me to bring it in for a look so I did. The gentleman literally walked over to the identical item on display and simply switched it out! He was worried that I wouldn't find that acceptable, but not only was that the BEST possible solution, but it saved me the time and hassle of returning the entire lamp and possibly the headache of ordering and waiting for a replacement. My OCD is thanking him! Yes, the place is cavernous, with an unusual layout, and their often strange assortment of non-lighting-related merchandise gives off somewhat of an "Adams Family" vibe, but the sales associates never seem to be standing around doing nothing. My only irritation is when an associate is helping me, they're often distracted by other customers with questions, and they end up juggling multiple customer needs at once. I used to think the IKEA lighting section was as good as it gets in terms of price and selection but that's only because I couldn't envision what BBC has to offer. First of all, the atmosphere is quirky and fun. They have strange mannequins and decor all over the place. And as you walk in you will smell the complimentary popcorn from the awesome popcorn machine! Welcome! As far as lighting goes - they have a ton of just about everything. The best part is the prices. And everything isn't cheap but they offer the full spectrum of prices - from VERY cheap to very expensive. Its up to you! Every kind of fixture in every kind of style is waiting. From glammy crystal chandeliers to art deco peacock sconces. I can't tell you how unique their selection is - you will just have to see for yourself. And that isn't to say that they don't have a ton of traditional pieces - they do. I'm telling you - they have it all. This place is funky and strange and has EVERY kind of light fixture or light bulb you're looking for. They have tons of stock in house. A team of sales staff are there to help you find exactly what you're looking for, but if you'd rather not be bothered by staff until you're ready, they're cool with that too. The service is A-1! While waiting for a pull switch to be installed on a wall sconce I purchased I saw the staff help a woman understand the difference between different kinds of light bulbs - cool light and warm light (she'd thought the problem was her lamp shade). And they found just the right piece of hardware out of bins of used pieces to retrofit a lamp a man had purchased resale. More than once I heard the phrase, "I'm not happy until you're happy." They also have displays of weird collectables, some for sale, some for show. I saw slot machines, a xylophone, autographed photos from classic tv and film actors among many other things. And, let's not forget the free popcorn!! I'd say stop in to browse even if you're not looking for lighting solutions, BBC is just a cool place to check out. read more

Customer service for custom order lights needs to improve a lot. Everytime when I call they say someone will get back to me. I left a detailed message in the voice mail also but no one replied to me. It is more than a month now. When I call weekends they say to call during week days. When I call week days no one get back to me though they get the details from me. I am tired of it. I must admit that walking into this bustling insane asylum can be a little intimidating for the average person, but the place is so cool, that you get used to it very quickly and actually can't wait to come back. I needed a globe for a ceiling light that just fell down one day and I looked all over online but didn't feel super comfortable with the $90 globes that didn't really match my fixture. I went down to BBC on a Monday around noon. I looked around for about ten minutes finding many fixture/globe combos but no single globes and then decided to find someone to help me. I walked up to the counter and was immediately greated by a very friendly man who said he had a "graveyard" where he thought we might be able to find a globe for me. Sure enough...within three minutes we had one. He asked me how much the globe and light fixture combos were on their shelf and when I said $35 he said, "ok, how about $10 for the globe only?" DEAL!!! He boxed up the new globe and my old globe, offered to tape it closed for me and off I went. I will definitely go back there again. Loved the atmosphere, loved the prices and loved the selection. I have purchased many lights here over the year and always had great customer service. I had a ceiling fixture that i got there about a year and a half ago--high end pretty expensive. After the year and a half only 1 of the 4 sockets were working. So I brought fixture back to be fixed. To my amazement and delight they replaced the whole fixture no questions asked! I am a young person that shops at BBC a couple of times a year for my home. I keep coming back because the selection is great, but the service makes me so uncomfortable EVERY TIME I shop here. As a young single person, sales people with their clip boards continually walk right past me, looking for older couples who they assume will spend more, as I assume that all sales people there are on commission. I end up buying despite them anyway, because the stuff is so cool. On my most recent purchase, I had to track down a sales person and ask if he could possibly grab something from stock from me. He did, and brought it to the cashier for me so he could associate his name with the sale, grabbed a free bulb for me, and literally just walked away without thanking me. In a raised voice I said THANK YOU as he walked away and he barely even turned around to acknowledge me. WTF? Perhaps he could have asked if I had any questions about the $175 item? Or engaged in ANY sort of conversation whatsoever, or at least thanked me. Just disappointing. I would shop there much more often if I didn't feel like an idiot every time I leave that place. read more

This place has an amazing variety of lights in all price ranges. I drove about 1 1/2 hours to get there and really feel that it was worth the drive.
