WOW. That's the end of my review.
Just kidding.
But really. That could sum up my entire experience.
Bayview is located in the President Wilson Hotel, which is located next to the beautiful lake. The hotel itself is gorgeous, and the restaurant is just the same.
The beginning of my experience was a little rocky and slightly uncomfortable, making me almost abandon what would be the best lunch I've ever had:
I was promptly greeted at the host stand, and I told the man I had a reservation for 1, followed him to my table, and he asked me a good three times if I'd like him to take my coat.
At least three servers asked me what I'd like to drink, but as I refused to pay 7 euros for water, I politely declined beverages for the longest time, until I realized that no one would take my food order until I ordered a beverage, and finally after the fourth time of being asked what I'd like to drink, ordered an Earl Grey tea (12CHF)
I had originally come here for the special lunch menu, which is 68CHF for an amuse bouche, starter, plate, and dessert, but was shocked to see that the menu wasn't there. I asked the server and after showing the photo of the menu online, she told me it was only a Saturday special, which I was thoroughly confused about. She called her manager over, and it turned out that the first server had handed me the dinner menu instead of the lunch menu. From here, things got better.
Food:
Before ordering, I was presented with an amuse bouche - a savory madeline with foie gras, and... another item that I can't remember. Both were beautifully presented and was a nice introduction to the meal.
Before the actual meal, a server came around with a basket of assorted breads to choose from. They also brought along a cart of butter, and she let me sample all four of them - Piment, Vanilla, Salted, and Regular butter.
I tried the olive bread and the walnut bread, and the walnut bread was absolutely amazing. The butters were all magnificent as well. My favorite was the vanilla butter on the walnut bread, as they were both slightly sweet and complimented one another.
MENU ITEMS:
Amuse Bouche - Ice Cod Fish with gogi berry infused tapioca and fig. The fish was very light and thinly sliced - my favorite part was the tapioca! So amazing.
Cream of Porcini & Chestnut Soup - with stuffed mushrooms and baked chestnut chips. Absolutely amazing. Creamy and robust flavors from the mushroom, and the contrast with the nutty chestnuts was amazing. I especially loved the chestnut chips that come on the side.
Pike Souffle - with crispy colored cauliflower and a lobster bisque sauce. The menu stated that it would be a truffle sauce, and this dish was one of the main reasons I chose to dine here, so I was a little surprised when it turned out to be a lobster bisque, but it was absolutely amazing! Very seafood-y with both the sauce and the pike souffle itself, which by the way was so fluffy and airy. There was a creamed cauliflower mixture that was also a perfect way to balance the strong taste of the dish, and the roasted cauliflowers were also so good!
Roasted Vanilla Foam Chocolate Dessert - with cacao nib ice cream, chocolate ganache, crunchy chocolate & cacao nib praline, and a bit of a tart lemon spread, accompanied by a cute little churro on the side.
I will say it once more, but absolutely amazing! The cacao nibs gave the otherwise sweet dessert a bitter element, and I loved the crunch that came from the cacao nibs. I also fell in love with the tart lemon, which was surprising, given that I never like sour desserts.
I was ready to be on my way after dessert when a server brought along a cart filled with chocolates, fruit candies, nougats, fudge, and cookies, and told me that this was the "dessert after dessert"
I got all four types of dark chocolates, a salted caramel cookie, and a fruit roll-up per the server's recommendation. The chocolates were creamy and rich, the cookie was the perfect sweetness, and the fruit roll up was so good, I can see why the server recommended it!
Overall, my lunch bill came out to be 78CHF (I thought it would be 80 because of the 68 meal and 12 ear grey, but I'm guessing because I only requested cream and no sugar, they took off some money? or forgot to charge me? Either way, it was a nice surprise). Considering how expensive Switzerland is, the price of this lunch was unbeatable in my opinion.
The staff was absolutely amazing, especially the manager, who made my experience 10x better by going above and beyond. I'm so glad that I got to make Bayview my first fine dining experience. read more
