I have been craving Indian food and there isn't anywhere in Jacksonville. They advertise lunch buffet, but they actually haven't had one in years which was super disappointing considering we drove an hour to eat here. We were seated immediately but it took close to 20 minutes to get water brought to the table. Our order was taken after 30 minutes and food took over an hour after we ordered. Our entrees came out at different times and the Naan was served 15 minutes after our meals. The food was decent but a little bland and the portion sizes were small for the price. The service was subpar, I felt like they were not overtly rude but also I did not feel like they cared at all about their customers. Also for the sauces that most restaurants offer complimentary to any meal we had to ask for them and were charged $4. I would not eat here again but New Bern itself is worth the drive! I am going to be learning how to make this food at home. read more

NO BUFFET as advertised on sidewalk sign! They obviously try to attract customers by advertising a lunch buffet for $11.99 but when you can only order off the menu, the entrees are twice as much. The food was edible but had more of a tomato soup base than anything similar to Indian spices and flavor. The garlic naan was tasty but was served "pizza like" and unlike traditional Naan as well. They have several signs preaching to not waste food but in my opinion, they should pay more attention to improving Indian flavors. read more

I love Indian food. Period. I used to eat it once a week back up in NY. Thinking about it makes my mouth water. When in New Bern the Bay Leaf is the place to go. If you ask anyone about restaurants this place is always mentioned. Which usually Indian isn't high up on people's list. But I know why..... The outside is very inviting, and the smell of the spices draw you in. I have only been for the lunch buffet because I like to try a little bit of everything. They have some staples that haven't seemed to change (Chicken tika masala, saag paneer) but each time I go there seems to be a couple that rotate, like the last time I went there was some spicy ground chicken dish that I wish I could remember the name, it was to die for. The staff has always been very friendly and attentive. I have absolutely no complaints. I can't wait to head back to New Bern so I can eat there again! read more

DISCLOSURES: Best Indian food that we have had in the US! Seriously, if you like Indian food or feel adventurous then you've got to visit this place. If you've lived in New Bern for a few years and haven't eaten here then you're really missing out. Before we decided to give these guys a shot we were very hesitant because of the reviews regarding quality of service. However, we were BLOWN AWAY by both the food and the service. I emphasize up front that these guys offer some of the best Indian cuisine in the world!! Highly recommend checking them out. We walked in shortly after 6 pm and were the third guests of the evening. With that said, service was excellent. The waiter was very attentive from beginning to end. We ordered the vegetable samosa, garlic and cheese naan, butter chicken, lamb roganjosh, mango lassi, and chai. The vegetable samosa and the sauces were outstanding; comparable to the best we've ever had. In line with the best we've ever had. The sauces were the best ever! The garlic and cheese naan was different. It was more like a pizza. That's new. Usually the cheese is placed inside the naan not on the top. Texture and consistency wise, terrific. Very good. Also some of the best naan. The butter chicken was incredible. At a spice level of 7.5 stars, this thing was exploding with flavor. Really outstanding curry! Everything about it was epic. The lamb wasn't really my thing and the husband agreed that my curry may have been only minimally better than the lamb. It was still packed with flavor but the lamb could've benefitted from about 20 minutes more heat to soften a bit more. We needed two plates of basmati to get all of the curry down. The spice level was perfect. Maybe even a 6.5 would've worked. Both curries were a 7.5 but felt like the butter chicken may have been an 8. Mango lassi is a no go. Too thick for our taste. More like a smoothie really. The chai was a true star. Best chai award goes to these guys. Oprah and Teavana need to try what real chai should taste like. NOTE: the place began to fill up beginning at 6:30/6:45. Perhaps showing up early would yield the outstanding service? No complaints on our part. $50 and absolutely worth every penny. read more

When we arrived the place was pack, so I expected a wait, but from the time we sat down til our appitizer arrived was 20 minutes. We then waited for over 40 minutes after the appitizer arrived for the main course to arrive. The nan was cold and the portions were smaller then most Indian restaurants we had been to in the past. On top of that when I tried to wave down the server we had before the main course arrived he looked at me and then walked right pass me. The meat somosa was good, but the mains tasted dull. All in all if you've got a lot of time to kill and are in need of Indian food it'll do, but I'd honestly recommend going elsewhere or to the Walmart freezer section one read more

The food has so much flavor, I can't get enough. I could eat Indian food every single day. For lunch, the buffet has a lot of selection and for dinner, I love one of the chicken dishes but I certainly can't remember the name right now. :-/ But I always get that! This is a nice place, especially for a small southern town. Many have talked about the food and the staff, all of that is true. The service is slow-ish (by impatient American standards), the food is good and worth the wait. They ask you what heat/spice level you want and I think that is a nice nod to American palates. The flavors are complex. My wife and I were talking a few days later and both admitted that perhaps its one of those things where our ability to taste the "nuance" of all the complex spices isn't quite mature. We are going to remedy that by having Indian/Nepalese cuisine a little more often. Let me take a moment though to celebrate the courage of the immigrant community. I cannot personally imagine packing up my stuff, traveling to some small town in another country where I may not be fluent in the language and setting up the pulled pork joint (a dish I am good at). Those who would want to build walls or other barriers are perhaps simply afraid of competition. I would instead prefer to enjoy the fact that these folks are here and contributing. Of course I don't want to "give" anyone a handout, regardless of where they are born. I do however prefer a world of opportunity to make their own way. Recently moved here and couldn't find any good foods luckily as I was walking downtown looking for a buffet place I found this little treasure hidden in new Bern, sadly due to COVID they haven't had their buffet opened but that's okay, as soon as I walked in, it smelled delicious, I enjoy trying new foods and I was so happy to find this Indian cuisine, the food was delicious from the appetizers to the desserts, if you enjoy spicy food this is the place to come hence they can make the food non-spicy for you as well, the staffs are very friendly they made me feel comfortable and welcome, they also have a lot of vegetarian options. read more

I snag our server and ask about our food. He says he will check. Shortly thereafter, the manager/owner comes to tell us our food will be out in 15 minutes and offers us samosas. The samosas come out quickly. 8:30 and still no food. We decide to leave in search of dinner and when we go to pay for the Theo sodas we ordered, we were also charged for the proffered samosas. Preface: I have NEVER given a 1 star review. The food is good at Bay Leaf. But the decor screams Don't Eat Here!! The older female hostess is completely off putting. Her snappy attitude is completely unwarranted. Every wall 'decoration' extols the sin of food waste and gluttony, and praises a time when women were subservient to their men. The naan I had off the buffet was very light and tasty. I took a small condiment dish to get some tzatziki for dipping. As I walked up to get some she barked at me, "that's not a dessert!" Yes ma'am I know, if it were a dessert I would have gotten something larger than this little 1/4 cup vessel. Damn! When she came to take our used dishes she again barked, "the knife, put the knife on the plate." Now keep in mind I had only been to the buffet once with the exception of the tzatziki and left no more than two bites on my plate. I am not 'Hitler's ally'! Her attitude, comments and behavior were way out of line. I don't care how good your food is I wouldn't spend one thin dime in your establishment ever again. When I was scanning through some of the reviews, I was a little weary heading in but since it is one of the only (if not only) Indian place in New Bern, the wife and I were excited to give it a try. IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! We were greeted immediately at 615 PM on a Saturday evening and seated promptly. There was a small crowd but even though the place isn't very big inside overall, we did not feel cramped. From the host, to bus boy, to server(s), to owner, everyone was extremely nice and the FOOD was DELICOUS! You really can't go wrong. Extremely poor service. I visited the Bayleaf on January 7, 2023. We arrived at 7:00 PM and we were told there would be an approximately 20 minute wait, which is perfectly acceptable. We were seated at about 7:25, and this is when the experience turned bad. We waited nearly 20 minutes for our waiter to greet us and take our orders, putting our order into the kitchen at 7:45 PM. Over the next 45 minutes we witnessed the table that came in at the same time as us receive their entrees, pay their bills, and leave. We witnessed a party come into the restaurant around 8:00 PM, and receive their entrees well before we even received our appetizer. At 8:30 a young waitress asked if we were okay, this was our first interaction with the staff since our order was placed 45 minutes ago. We told her that we had been waiting a very long time and asked if she could please check on our order. Not soon after, we received our appetizer at 8:35 PM. It took 1 hour and 10 minutes after being seated to receive our appetizer, and we weren't even sure it was what we ordered. It was extremely evident that they forgot about us, and that they simply didn't care. We decided that we had had enough and that we would be leaving. The manager asked us to please stay and I explained to her that we had reached our limit and that we no longer wished to eat there, I also pointed out to her that I witnessed multiple people sit, eat there meals, and leave all before we even received our appetizer. My favorite thing is the small sauces you get my personally favorite is the red onion one, the food does take a bit to come out but that's just cause everything is made fresh to order, one of the things I didn't like was the prices some of the dishes are definitely over price for the quantity that you get but quality of the food is all there, and for some reason there no cell service in there i hates that. The service is mediocre youll get the service you need but you still kinda get their attention, overall I think it's good.. really nothing else in the area to compare it to but good food is good food so i recommended you trying it. read more

Bay Leaf is the only Indian restaurant in New Bern and, in all honesty, that's fine. The food is amazing. Everything was perfectly cooked, seasoned, and spiced. If you don't order some naan bread you're missing out! The lady that took my order was super nice and very happy when I told her it was my first time. Bay Leaf truly blew my expectations away. We told them to cancel our order after the table that came in after us got there food first. Our drinks were empty and the waitress didn't come back to ask if we wanted another. We then asked to cancel the order and they said two min it will be out. It did come out then. The food was very Americanized. Flavor was ok but I ordered the mild and it was almost tasteless. Love love love! Service is always great, food is always perfect! This is our go to date night spot! Have the candle lit on the table and it makes the ambiance romantic. The Only thing I wish changed was a bigger place. You feel like your sitting on top of other people and once it gets busy (which it always is), you hardly hear the people at your table.
