Well, this is disappointing, but we won't be returning to Bay Leaf. This evening, we sat down at 5:30, and were told that we needed to make room for other diners at 6:40. We ordered appetizers, wine, and main courses. They tried to take food away before we were finished, and they didn't offer a dessert. We've been here dozens of times and seen the portions shrink, etc, but being asked to hurry up and leave is just not acceptable, especially with all we ordered and how long we'd been there at a 2-top table. Everyone in New Bern raves about how delicious Bay Leaf is so we had to try it out. This was my very first time trying Indian cuisine so I was very excited. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and was a little disappointed as I personally thought it tasted like tomato basil soup with chicken. Definitely needed some more rice to go with it as the portions were smaller than I thought they would be. I was confused by the atmosphere as it looks like a small Italian restaurant with all of the wine bottles and wine themed decor. Service was mediocre. We entered and stood there until a server from across the restaurant held up three fingers and then pointed us to a table without saying anything which was pretty much how the service went. No friendly greetings, no smiles, just "Okay." "Water?" "Refill?" "Check?" Check was also incorrect. Would really like to give it a second chance but was not all that impressed and did not understand the local hype upon my first visit. read more

I came with an open mind and high expectations, being that the ratings at this establishment were pretty high. I would like to first point out the obvious, at least in my experience, that the customer service was mediocre. I had ordered two drinks, a House special sweet mango Lassie and chai masala tea, which both were very delicious, but I had to remind the owner 3x to get my drinks. Granted, the night was pretty busy for a Monday night, but getting my drinks late in my meal was not what I expected, at the very least. The entrees and the garlic naan were prepared with a lot of flavors. I enjoyed every bit of it. The portions were decent, but the price of $20 per dish and an "adjustment" fee of $6 for the entire meal on top of the sales tax was a bit steep and odd. The prices are steep, even more expensive than most Indian restaurants in California. The restaurant's ambiance was inviting and comfortable for an enjoyable meal setting. All in all, it's a pretty good Indian restaurant, but prepare to fork a hefty amount of money for it. read more

I have to update my review. I'm a long term fan of this restaurant. But I'm seeing the shrinkflation for this place now. The rice on the to go order was cut in HALF. I was shocked as I KNOW you get more rice when you dine in. THey've updated their containers. The paneer is very limited. They have watered down their brown chutney sauce. it's not as gelatinous as it's been in the past. It's a liquid like water. Their little sauce containers are only filled half way. All of them were half full. It's just awful and sad to see this. :( I would rather drive to Jacksonville to eat at OceanBay where their portions are what you pay for! read more

Wanted to stop by for the lunch buffet but was told they don't do the buffet anymore despite the sign outside advertising the buffet. When I first ate here about 4 years ago it was one of the best restaurant meals I have ever had,loved the spices and flavors. Unfortunately over the last 2 years prices have gone up and portion sizes have gone down dramatically. I love the Chicken Tika Marsala ,used to be a very generous portion but now it is 5-6 small pieces of chicken all sauce with just a cup of rice for almost 30$. I understand cut backs due to a bad economy but lowering portion sizes and raising prices to make a profit isn't right or fair for loyal customers. Staff isn't to friendly these days either,I truly miss going there but don't see myself or my family going back and will definitely not be recommending the Bay Leaf to anybody Update: Went back a week ago because family member invited my family for lunch. It was an hour to the midday shutdown time and staff was extremely rude and rushed us with ordering and eating, tall skinny and short bald waiter decided to sit in dinning room area close to our table on their phones with volume all the way up to motivate us to finish faster so they can close down as they locked the door as we where walking out. The food is absolutely great and always consistent ,it is one of the very few Indian restaurants nationwide ( I have looked in 31 states so far) where you can get a beef boti masala and it was my favorite and always great. My problem with the place is that after me literally eating there 80+ times addressing the owner, her Sons and some of the staff by their first name, always tipping nice, still treat me like a total stranger and when it's getting just to 8:45 pm they taking your plate and your glass away and present your bill basically telling you get the fuck out asap. . One day the restaurant was empty at 11:35 am and the owner and husband and son sat at a table close to where I always sit and now they wanted me to choose a different table far away from them. Because of COVID-19, they are not serving the lunch buffet which is what I usually have when I eat here. But, good thing, the food is so good, anything you order will be delicious! The portions are big, so you can easily share a meal or save for leftovers. We decided to each order and share. This was the first time I ordered the Chai and it was great. The restaurant is a bit withdrawn from the main street; it's a very nice space and looks family-run. They still have a sign out as if there's a buffet, but that's probably not allowed in this new corona-world, to the disappointment of some other perspective diners. I sometimes want a buffet and sometimes don't, this would have been a day for it, but I was nonetheless quite happy. My straightforward order of channa masala and poori tasted fresh. A separate side table was brought out for my fried bread, and the chickpeas, while only modestly hot, possessed a variety of sweet and savory flavors and were by no means simplistic. Other delicious-looking dishes were brought by to the other socially distant tables. I wasn't thrilled with the price to portion ratio, but the range of interesting vegetarian menu items and the flavor I got were certainly very good and probably not easy to find in the area. read more

We've been twice now. The first time , the service was *really* slow but the restaurant was full and they were down someone in the kitchen. Nonetheless, the food was good. Really. Good. We went back again. This time, less crowded and the service was prompt. Again, the food was quite good. We've tried two variations of biryani; the mixed biryani was best. We've also tried aloo gobi and butter chicken. Those were both good too but the portions are a bit small. While I can't say the service is especially friendly, they get the job done and we'll be back. read more

Went with my family and right away we got a unwelcoming vibe. One guy asked if we had a reservation but the place was basically empty. We asked if we needed one and he said no. We placed our order and the waiter forgot to put in the tandoori chicken which is ok because mistakes happen f but we didn't receive the meal till after everyone was done eating. Then when they ran our bill they gave themself a very heft tip( gratuity) that was way over the 20%. The next day I saw we had an extra charge on top of our original that had nothing to do with our bill. I called them the lady said " sometimes cards get charged for other people tables. But the charge should drop off in 48 hours." The way she talked it sounded like it was a normal thing that happens there. Either way I will never go back. They weren't friendly and not welcoming at all. I did have a gut feeling that I needed to keep my receipt and I'm glad I did. I have another day till the charge "falls off" so we shall see. I was a little worried because the two main dishes looked very similar, but the tastes were unique to their own seasonings. The samosa orders come with two, and they served them with three different sauces that were all delicious. Each main dish is on the pricier side, but you're paying for quality in both food and service. You ever eat at a place, leave satisfied, and then continue to think about it after the fact? Their butter chicken with garlic cheese naan has been my go to order for years. But they seem to be adding tomato sauce to it because it's not nearly as flavorful as it used to be. The garlic cheese naan has been slacking as well. Used to be a 5/5, lately it's been a 3/5. It's a real hit or miss nowadays. The atmosphere is okay but the staff seem very unhappy and stressed. We got take out from Bayleaf last week. The food was great and the naan was also amazing. We ordered chicken 65, chicken tikka, and lamb vindaloo. While all of the food was great, the order was incorrect... I was disappointed because we didn't receive my chicken tikka but instead got butter chicken. By the time we got home with the order, it was too much of a hassle to go back for the correct dish. Butter chicken was excellent however, We did want to enjoy some Kheer for dessert but they were out. So, overall good but wish the order would've been correct. read more

I do t usually write reviews yet this was such a miserable experience I feel compelled. 1) loud obnoxious music 2) menu on website not the same as in restaurant (no curries) 3) I'm a vegetarian, menu says 'fresh vegetables' in menu item. I ask if they used frozen, waiter said 'hmm some are frozen' better answer is we use frozen mixed vegetables and stir them around in a flavorless sauce. I noticed my last review was 5 years ago so this is an update. I do not know what has happened here but I am sure we were not served what we ordered. Our server was aggressive and rushing us through our lunch of which cost $50. A few hours later, both of us were in agreement that our bodies were not digesting this meal well. The perfect location for a romantic evening with your dinner date(s) (i went w my fiance and daughter). We were craving Indian food and as we arrived, the ambiance was so warm and welcoming. The lady, which i assume is the owner, was so kind to my daughter which made me realize this was probably a family-owned restaurant which makes you always feel a bit more warmer inside. Spectacular food...was a bit of a wait for food to be served, but well well well worth the wait. Everything was so freshly prepared and the naan breads (onion and the garlic) were amazing. When they set up an additional folding table beside our dining table...in preparation for the naan breads....we knew we came to the right place. I ordered a beer and waited for my takeout and enjoyed the lovely Saturday night atmosphere. We ordered the salmon tikka with Masala sauce on the side, the began khas, vegetable samosa, bhindi do-paiza, Achaea, chana masala, and the navrattan korma. Let me start by saying and giving credit where credit is due. The food tastes ok. It's not mind blowing by any means but given the fact that it's the only Indian restaurant in the area it tastes ok. Also, beer is "cheap". $4 for a Kingfisher isn't that bad. HOWEVER. First. FOOD. The portions have been ridiculously reduced as of late, prices are way higher than in the past (I understand why I guess, but 20$ for a cup of curry and white rice is simply unacceptable). We're talking DC, Los Angeles level pricing here for one "styrofoam plate" worth of food lol. We ordered an assorted appetizer plate. The thing was simply laughable. One big fat greasy samosa in the middle with 3 pieces of fried onions and maybe 5 chunks of chicken. Semi-bland, annatto/paprika colored chicken. All for a great $13.00. The naan? Omg lmao. That was a naan yeah but a very thin naan. Like a tortilla. Like literally no bubbles, or that slight char that you get from their tandoor. If you've eaten at any other Indian restaurant you know what I'm talking about. The Mango Lassi was warm. Warm yogurt? No good. Second. SERVICE! It is slow. Super slow. Slower than an octogenarian with ankle weights. Don't come here SUPER hungry otherwise you're screwed. Third. FEES. They have a crazy fee for card payments and they don't tell you anything about it. They don't ask you about cash vs card payment. They just charge it. Fourth. THE RESTROOM. It is dirty, super outdated, rusty, smelly, everything you'd imagine a gas station bathroom to be. Which brought the overall score to a 1/5 stars easy. A restaurant in this price range has NO excuse to have a sketchy, gas-station level bathroom. To sum it up, we spent $100 for this underwhelming meal. Well, $96.00 + $4.00 card fee. It was not well spent. Although there's always a lesson behind everything so I guess that was the upside of it. read more

I also tried the chicken vindaloo, baigan bharta, and the chicken 65 khas... all were amazing and full of flavor. Excellent food - we had a variety of dishes and everything was fresh and delicious. I'm a huge fan of Indian seasoning and flavors and theirs is spot on. Be sure to order some of the breads! We were happy to find Indian food as an option on a trip to New Bern. We started with the appetizer sampler which we felt was a little greasy but the 3 sauces that were dropped off at the table were delicious. Our mains were Chicken Vindaloo and Malia Kofta both served with a generous side of rice. We also ordered roti, masala chai and the carrot halwa. My favorites were the kofta, chai and the halwa. The service was ok but not overly friendly, food arrived as ordered & quickly, bathroom was clean. The decor is a bit of a confusing mix of styles but who cares, we were there for the food!
