Bay Leaf has always been our go to Indian restaurant. The staff is friendly and welcoming which is what I've come to know about the Indian culture from my travels to India. The food is exceptional with many different flavors provided by the many different spices. We are big fans of the Butter Chicken and the Vegetable Korma. So much so, I do not like cauliflower where this meal has it and I still love it. The old saying, you can poor the sauce over a boot and it would still taste good. We were happy to find Indian food as an option on a trip to New Bern. We started with the appetizer sampler which we felt was a little greasy but the 3 sauces that were dropped off at the table were delicious. Our mains were Chicken Vindaloo and Malia Kofta both served with a generous side of rice. We also ordered roti, masala chai and the carrot halwa. My favorites were the kofta, chai and the halwa. The service was ok but not overly friendly, food arrived as ordered & quickly, bathroom was clean. The decor is a bit of a confusing mix of styles but who cares, we were there for the food! I had the veggie samosas and the jalfrezi chicken, my party had the butter chicken, and one person had the lamb (don't remember the sauce) and we all loved the food so much! The service was also amazing. We were meeting friends and this town happened to be the halfway point. New Bern, NC is an awesome little town. But the last thing you would expect here would be good Indian food. Bay Leaf totally proved my assumptions wrong. Just the smell going into the restaurant is amazing!! They have some authentic Indian beers and a good wine selection. But their food is the star!! They have a pretty big selection on the menu, but not to the point where any of the food loses quality. Everything is authentic, fresh and delicious. I love Indian chicken dishes, but they have everything from chicken, to beef, to lamb, and vegetarian. They also have a crazy expansive selection of Naan...and their Naan is legit!! Staff is friendly and helpful...but really this is a very been good Indian restaurant and maybe the best restaurant in New Bern overall. The food is good, I've had my fair share of traditional Indian food and it's not the best, but not disappointing. I would ONLY EAT HERE IF YOURE GETTING TAKEOUT. The service sucks, we were there for 2-3 hours. Found a hair in my food, they forgot to bring out enough waters for us, had to end up sharing with my husband. I understand they are always super busy but you would think a restaurant that makes so much profit they would hire more staff. Every time I'm there there's only 2 waiters and one of them is the owner. Also do not expect to get traditional spicy Indian food here, i asked for the spiciest level even had to pay more, but there was absolutely no kick to it whatsoever, didn't even taste like it was mild. read more

Sign on sidewalk states "Lunch Buffet $11.99" First thing server said when he seated us was "there is no buffet". When we asked about sign he replied they stopped during Covid. We suggested they change the sign he just shrugged his shoulders. As "no buffet" was the first words he uttered it appears he knew exactly this was false advertising. Final straw was the check had 4% added "non cash adjustment" - no notification other than small print on bottom of bill. This hidden gem Indian restaurant is delightful. The food is fantastic, and the wait staff are courteous and professional. The staff were dressed in informal clothes, like jeans and T-shirts for the most part. Our waiter was so friendly and made a recommendation of an appetizer. We ordered tikka marsala and butter, chicken and both were delicious. Customers from various demographics entered while we were there and all seemed to have a good time. Later we were walking the streets of New Bern and chatted with someone who lives there. They happened to mention that Bay Leaf is their favorite restaurant. This is simply the most tasteless Indian food I have ever had in my many travels around the world and the US. Unless you like your Indian food with Campbells soup sauce with some Tabasco for heat desired over canned food and pizza press for your Naan, forget about this place. It advertises a lunch buffet for $11.99 on the sign outside, but no buffet is available. Instead, you pay $17.00 dollars minimum for really poor quality food and subpar service. I am blown away. My parents absolutely love Bay Leaf and constantly talk about it. That is a big deal because our small town in NC only has a few restaurants, and rarely has restaurants that stick around. My wife and I were in town and decided to order takeout. We got the Chicken Malai Tikka, Beef Curry, and garlic naan. I could not stop talking about how delicious the food was, seriously. The Malai Tikka took about 30 minutes to cook in a tandoor (per the staff) and it was some of the most tender and flavorful chicken I've ever had. We ordered it Medium spiciness and it was great. It was served over cooked onions and cheese, and the accompanying lemon squeeze added the perfect flavor to balance the heat. It came with a tomato sauce on the side that was perfect for dipping both the chicken and the naan. The beef curry, which we ordered mild spiciness, was incredible. Flavorful chunks of beef in a red/orange Indian curry sauce, served with rice. I haven't had very much Indian curry but it was absolutely delicious. The garlic naan was the perfect accompaniment for the curry and tomato sauces. The restaurant has several types of naan and I imagine all of them are delicious. Overall, as an Indian food novice, I cannot wait to try other things on the menu. read more

Disclaimer: I'm from the Indian Subcontinent and my family owns a few Indian Restaurants in DC. Most people get cravings for candy, ice cream, sushi, burgers, etc. This girl right here, has been craving desi food since she got stuck here for work. Usually, I can keep my craving at bay and just deal until I get back home but this time it over took my mind and I caved. I wish I could say it was worth it but it wasn't. This was a carry out order and it wasn't as impressive as everyone has proclaimed it to be. I'm down here visiting and really thought this place would live up to its Yelp hype. I really should've canceled the order when the person who took my order and proceeded to have an attitude that I was placing the order. I believe she cut me off twice while I was trying to tell her what I would like. I didn't think anything of it since the reviews stated this place was busy but that was just uncalled for. If I wanted that much sass, I would've called my mother. The following was ordered: Veggie Samosas Meat Samosas Aloo Paratha Chicken Vindaloo Lamb Biryani Saag Paneer The food looked like it was thrown into the containers and because of the packaging, it looked like someone threw up in it. I asked for the "fresh" portion of the food to be spicy and it had no kick to it. It was milder than mild. Two of the six dishes were incorrect. We received regular naan and the chicken vindaloo had no chicken only potato's. I am not sure if these were homemade or we just didn't get the fresh samosas due to it being 7:30pm but they were just 2.5 stars. The meat samosas were dry and lacked flavor. The veggie samosas had only potato's and no other veggies in it. Lamb biryani had more peanuts and raisins in it then rice and lamb. I had also requested no raisins and peanuts in it because of my peanut allergy. I wasn't able to eat that dish so I can't rate it. And the Saag paneer, was okay. I hope others have a better experience. I'm not sure if they were having an off night, unfortunately I wouldn't be coming back again. Desis can tell the difference between desi food and have a higher expectation from each other. This desi foodie won't be getting her desi cravings covered in New Bern anymore. read more

If they changed some things and i hope they care enough to read and see this. Ive had great dishes here but i will say the 4% charge for cards is dumb because no one else does that. Two they need to bring back the lunch buffet if they want to make people come to dinner service as well. Portions are okay but a bit expensive which i understand because the spices are expensive but still . It just gives off sketchy sometimes and not American professional. Since this is a family business i think they just run things biased on who you are and what they feel like which isn't a good business motto. Most importantly, food was fairly good. Flavor was nice. Ambiance was also pretty good. Fairly standard for an Indian restaurant. Onto my gripes: some of the wait staff were lacking. One female server was very attentive but our male server seemed pretty apathetic about us being there. Most weird was that we walked by the place and two sidewalk signs say "$11.99 lunch buffet." We went in, sat down, asked for the buffet, and were told "we haven't had a buffet in 4 years. Not sure why it still says that. We took it off the website." I figured that maybe I misread the sign so didn't push it, but after we departed I checked again and sure enough, the $11.99 buffet is listed. We went on a Saturday and maybe they meant buffet is only open during the week and there's now no buffet on Saturdays, but that was just a weird, disappointing experience. I love Indian buffets and the fact that there was no actual buffet despite the sign, plus pretty mediocre service, made for a very "meh" experience. Won't be back. This place was quiet satisfying. Since it's one of the only Indian restaurants nearby. I don't have much to go off of. I got the Chicken Korma I believe was 14.99. This dish was very tasty. I want to try the butter chicken at this place, normally that's my go to. However, the waitress told me I should do the korma instead. I also ordered the Veggies Samosas. They were 3.99. They were a large portion. Definitely could be split in between two adults. I probably would have them again they were very potatoie. I would order something with more variety the Garlic cheese naan was really satisfying as well. Though, I wish the cheese was more melted on. It seemed as if they just threw some cheese on top. Melted cheese would have made this place a 10 for me. This was also 3.99. The atmosphere was quiet nice. It is definitely a restaurant that you could take a date to and be content with having a good meal. If you are having a itch for Indian this would be a great place for you to come and enjoy. Not good. Walked in the door at 5:00. There were a few other tables that arrived around that time but nothing crazy. After about 10 minutes we placed our order, just two naans and a chicken dish to arrive together that we were told was a quick one. Then we proceeded to watch every other table as well as ones that arrived after us get their food. When we inquired the sarcastic "waitress" in a beat up old tee shirt stated it was because they ordered appetizers. Unfortunately that was not the truth as many of the dishes were served with a side of rice (entree) and also multiple orders of naan. It is now 5:45 and we have finally received our food. We have eaten here over a half dozen times in the past. We won't be eating here again. We have both been in the restaurant business for many years, front and back of the house, as well as management and understand mistakes occur. But to be lied to, and with disdain, that's unacceptable. Like many before me, I only wish I could give zero stars. read more

Did you know there are a multitude of naan's (grilled bread) you can order?? I ordered the rosemary and was delighted as were the rest of our crowd, I can hardly wait to try the rest of them. What I loved was that each dish was served in a separate casserole so even though you think you are ordering for only yourself it encourages sharing the dishes with the rest of your party. This is a family dining experience to be embraced. While some of the meat was overcooked, the bliss of sharing dishes surpassed other expectations. Choose your spice level. Mild is so mild all you taste is the delightful curry. Add a little more spice and let your tastebuds rejoice in the many levels you can experience. After that, you're on your own because I'm not grateful for the tang of more hotness. However!! They served us 3 levels of sauces with our appetizers which was a joy. Sweet brown, medium green, and spicy hot and sweet red added richness to the already glorious of their food. The Saag Paneer was rich, the mango chicken was sweet, and the naan pulled it all together. We went as a party of 11 and that was too many for this intimate dining spot which is designed for 1 to 4 people. Be careful!! Pricing is super deceptive. If you order multiple dishes that come with rice, they only bring you one small dish of rice (total) and then charge you $3.99 for any additional dishes of rice you might need. On top of that, the takeout menu on their current website reflects lower prices - and those prices are not honored. My meal should have been less than $35 and I was charged $45 before tip!! Plus they said the food would be ready in 45 minutes and it took over an hour and 30 minutes. And it gets better - they forgot to give me one of the items from my order. When I went back they knew immediately why I was there, but they barely apologized. Lame. read more

Very good indian restaurant tucked into a portico mall across one of the prettiest churches in New Bern. Staff was super friendly and so was the cook who walked out of the kitchen to bring us our food. I ordered Some Saag Panier and some plain Naan. The food was good and the servers attentive. We had the Beef Samosas and Chicken 65 Khas as appetizers which were good. The server had recommended the Chicken 65 Khas with Rosemary Naan and it was absolutely amazing! We can't wait to have it again. We had the Butter Chicken and Shrimp Tikka Masala for dinner with Garlic Naan. Our favorite dish was the Tikka. Great food. Visited during Covid so it was the service was a bit different than what one would normally expect, but the food was delicious. It can look pricy on the menu but you get enough for leftovers. One dish is a decent enough size to feed two people and the flavors are wonderful and fresh. I got the Aloo Gobi and the Vegetable Tikka Masala and both were so aromatic that it really put my previous meals to shame. I've missed food like this. The Vegetable Tikka Masala was particularly delicious and the vegetables were fresh. You don't even miss the chicken. The wait was a bit long, though perhaps not unreasonably so. Saw great reviews of Bay Leaf online, and I love Indian food, so I gave them a try. I walked in 15 minutes before they were scheduled to close, hoping for the best. I asked if they were still serving, and the nice lady, who I later discovered was the owner, offered to let me order a meal to go. So I placed a to-go order for the lamb boti masala and some garlic naan. (I found out she asked the chef to stay extra late just to prepare my meal!) It was DELICIOUS! Both the masala and the garlic naan, which is one of several types of naan they offer. Although I took mine to go, it was a very nice setting in the restaurant, which is located in the heart of New Bern. Delicious food and excellent customer service - what more could you want? Had dinner here last night. Came in with a party of 5, 3 adults and 2 children without a reservation. I called before we left and they indicated it was no problem. However, when we arrived they seemed a little put off. Regardless, we were seated and ordered quickly. Thankfully they brought out the kids food quickly. Unfortunately their food was all gone before the adults food arrived. The wait was excessive. It appeared there was only two people serving the entire room full of people. They defiantly need more staff in the front and in the back! Once our food arrived, however it was very tasty. We had the chicken korma and chicken masala. We also ordered veggie samosas and garlic naan. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. I would just recommend you make a reservation and also plan to be there awhile! read more
