The food was horrible. The rice had no flavour whatsoever and was hard and grainy. The sesame chicken was a mix of soggy red clumps of coating with no chicken. The other was fried hard pieces of coating again no chicken. I was looking forward to this meal as I am in the hospital and finally able to eat and unfortunately this is what I got. The food has been amazing for well over 12 years. My husband and I moved away and I have tried to find another spot as good as Cantons and I haven't had any luck. 11 years later we take a trip back to NC, and I have to stop by there. I was pleased to find the food is still the same great flavor and price. The owners have pride in their establishment and it shows. There is a 2 top table and a 4 top. Let's start with the 100.0 sanitation rating. This place is clean. The husband and wife that run this place are the nicest, hardest working people. Makes you feel good to give them your business. Now let's talk about the food. This is the best Chinese food I've ever had. The chicken teriyaki is amazing and my wife is addicted to it. Its not your typical teriyaki. Its very very different and you have to try it. My wife has been dying to try the beef teriyaki but every time we order they are out of it so the last time I went here I asked them about it. She told me that due to supply chain issues the supplier has capped how much beef they can order and beef teriyaki uses a lot of beef. If they make beef teriyaki with their limited supply of beef then there won't be any beef for the stir fry, she explained. The husband heard us talking and came over to explain further that they don't use just any beef. The beef he orders costs him $12/lb when all the other restaurants in town use $3/lb beef. He is so proud of his beef he ran back to the kitchen and brought it out to show me as if I could tell the quality of the rare beef by looking at it. It was really cute. This is only the second restaurant in New Bern we have found that lives up to our high California standards. They are from San Francisco which explains a lot. I should also mention the price. Typically, we spend $30 eating out. Our typical bill at Canton rarely breaks $20. read more

Me and my family ordered at this place on a Saturday (this was our first time trying this place). They were understaffed that day, and the preparation of the order took a little longer, so we waited patiently, and we were not rude in any way about it. We ordered two 12-count Crab Ragoons (with red sauce), two General Cho's Chicken (not spicy), one Szechuan Chicken, two pint-sized Wonton soups, and one Hot and Sour Soup. After we received our order, we thanked them and left (since it was take-out). When we got home and tried the food, we were disappointed. - The Crab Ragoons did not have a nice flavor or pop to them: it tasted like someone just took cream cheese straight out the box, wrapped it up in the dough, and fried it. The red sauce had a sweet and tangy flavor but did not do much to help add flavor to it. The ragoons were hard at the top, making the only place you can really eat at the bottom, where the filling is at. - The General Cho's Chicken consisted of fried, small pieces of chicken, with a sweet and tangy sauce. Some of the pieces had no chicken in it, resulting in just small greasy pieces of batter. Overall, the dish was dry. - The Szechuan Chicken (not spicy) was the only thing (in my opinion) that was good that we ordered. It was flavored nicely with something that tasted like they added some kind of seafood paste, with some garlic and a little ginger. Nice sized pieces of chicken and vegetables. My husband enjoyed it as well. - The Wonton Soups are not like the usual way. The dough tasted thin and spongy. And the meat inside was clumpy. - The Hot and Sour Soup was not the best but was edible. I nicely called back the same night for a refund. I even brought back the food we did not eat (since they requested that we bring it back). She refunded me half of the money back. Since my husband enjoyed the Szechuan Chicken (I tasted a little bit as well) and I liked it as well, I wanted to order it again. When I called the restaurant from my phone number, the restaurant's number said I was placed on a Block, No-Call List. My daughter called and made the order off her phone (since her phone number was not blocked). When I went in there with my daughter to pick up the order, I asked the young lady up front who was taking orders "Do you all block a person's number because you return food back?" The young lady informed me that they block if you don't pick up your order, or if you are late picking it up, or are rude, but she has no control over who get blocked or not, but the owner's do. "If I returned the food, why did I go back?" Even though I did not enjoy most of the food we ordered, I enjoyed the Szechuan Chicken (not spicy) and thought it would be okay to order what I liked. As someone previously posted years ago on Google Review about this place, some stuff is a hit-and-miss (meaning some stuff is good, and some is not, in my opinion). Just because I returned the food I didn't like (because it wasn't good to me), I was blocked. That is not good customer service. I wish them well and I hope they change how they treat their customers. read more

I absolutely love Canton. The health inspection rate is always above 98 and they are friendly. Food is fresh and has fresh vegetables. I'm ready for them to open back up post COVID. We've had the immense privilege to live overseas as well as visit many authentic Chinese restaurants around the world. The young couple that work there are always courteous and smiling.
