The atmosphere of Baxter's was unique, interesting and warm. Our server had a great sense of humor and made excellent suggestions when it came to beer and the menu items. The service was fantastic with plenty of support staff that all took time to make sure we were pleased with our selections and experience. Our dinners were awesome! Two of us had the steak with a cherry compote, one had the penne pasta with a basil pesto cream sauce that was to die for...we all ate some of it! One had the cod fish special and she raved about it. Even though we were stuffed, we ended the evening off with sharing the key lime pie after our server jokingly bragged it up. (I'm a tough critic as we live in Florida and Key Lime pie is my favorite dessert!) He said "money back guarantee". It was a safe statement! It was super creamy and just tart enough with what seemed to be candied lime zest on top and an amazing graham cracker crust. We would highly recommend Baxter's. We were in Sandpoint for a family birthday weekend. I am so glad we chose this restaurant! We were seated as soon as we walked in (we had reservations). The service was great! I was so impressed that all of the waiters/waitresses helped out even if it was not "their table". If they saw a glass needed to be filled or a plate taken away, they did it. The food was fabulous! This place looks promising and has many good reviews, but for us it was not good. I ordered the chicken de jour with rice. The chicken was bland and tasteless, and I was served mashed potatoes instead of rice. The vegetables were cool and undercooked. My wife ordered the mussels/clams appetizer. Found this little gem while putting around town on a Wednesday afternoon. We came after the lunch hour and had the place virtually to ourselves. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. Had a bowl of chili to start and a blue cheese burger. Top that off with a glass of wine and seat near the window and we were happy as can be. We were visiting our son who goes to school in the area and it was Christmas Eve. Chose Baxter's partially out of karma being an owner of a black lab, see their logo. The atmosphere is very nice and relaxed and blend between pub and upscale casual dining. The food was excellent. We had four separate dishes ranging from comfort food (meatloaf), t which was very good to burgers for one boy and chicken strips for a very picky teen who raved about the strips and french fries.. So their is great food for kids too, although this seems in atmosphere, to cater to more of an adult audience. Yet it is good family dining as well Hear the key lime pie is very good too. Had the blueberry cobler which was ok. Can definitely share that we will dine here again as our restaurant of choice when back in Sandpoint. Easily my favorite restaurant in Sandpoint. Service is always great. Food is wonderful. The only thing holding back 5 stars: -portions for some dinners/lunches can sometimes be weak (it would be easy to add more vegt or starch to round out the plate) -the duck confit is WAY too salty (and I like salty, but not to the point that my face is swelling the next day). Also, the last time I ordered it, I raved about this dish to other people at the table and invited them to try a piece. Unfortunately for that evening, everyone agreed that it tasted like turkey. Duck doesn't taste like turkey. I'm not sure how to explain that one. read more

I will not be coming back. Living in Sandpoint for over 10 years, I've been to many local restaurants, but not all of them. When I was taking my mom out for a lunch date, we decided to go somewhere we hadn't been before. We stumbled upon Baxter's after hearing such great things from other patrons. Food was terrible, service was even worse. We were there for lunch, and practically nobody there. Service was slow, and the waitress was incredibly rude towards us. When she noticed I wasn't eating my fries, she reached over to take them away, THEN asking me if it was alright to take them. I told her I didn't want them and they were too salty, and she promptly says "You could've told me." and rolls her eyes as she walks away. She comes back less than a minute later, dropping the fries, and says "Here, you can salt your own fries." I knew the fries were not fresh, it takes longer than a minute to cook fresh fries, and the new fries were obviously burnt by just looking at them. My mom ordered the shrimp tacos, and for $13, you would expect to have a nice meal that was filling. This was not. The tacos came out with no sauce or anything on them, so they were dry. Once mom asked if she had anything to put on the taco, she left and went to look and came back saying she thinks the sour cream was thrown out. I work in a position where I recommend various places to my customers, and Baxter's is not one of them. Menu was also very small for what I would expect, there were only 10 options, and the drinks menu was incredibly limited unless you wanted alcohol. Definitely not a place I will go to again, unless a lot is changed. read more

We love this restaurant! The food is prepared very well and our favorites are the rack of lamb or lamb sliders and the fish is always perfect. The decor is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxing, inviting, the service attentive and we either see people we know or meet interesting new people. Consistently the best restaurant in town. Been here twice this past week for lunch. First day was at least a 45 min wait for cioppino and shrimp taco. Second lunch was Caesar salad(boring) spinach salad(almost no blue cheese and dressing) and a brat with very dry roll too hard to eat. Shrimp taco was good. Fries were delicious. The food is mediocre, on paper it's slightly above Sandpoint's current offerings, but when food comes to the table, it just doesn't deliver, or at least hasn't each time I've been there. The menu descriptions, vague. The presentation, average. The cost, too much for what arrives. I'm sure the owner is nice, but he's always lurking off in the distance, and never smiles. I heard a lot of good things about Baxter's before I went there for dinner. It's a cool spot and the food was very good if not exceptional. That said, as someone who worked in the service industry growing up I couldn't help but feel badly for the waitstaff who I felt were being micromanaged by the owner Tommy. Relax Tommy! Your people are great and you have a good product. We're there to relax and don't want to see you yelling at your staff or asking whether they're doing their job- they are! Hot tip: if you let the waitstaff make their own change/run their own register you'd be less stressed behind the bar. read more

We were a party of four who called in advance but were told they did not take reservations for a group of that size. Walked in and were seated immediately. Food was great and our server was very attentive. The review was given a 2 star because as we were finishing our wine, we were asked to leave the table because another party was waiting to be seated. This place was OK. I'm baffled by all of the 5 star reviews after our visit there. Granted, we only had one meal, but we were underwhelmed by the food. We ordered the pear and brie bruschetta, which had great potential, but fell short. It was heavy on brie, which should have been warmed or melted, and the pear needed a little more something. It had a vinaigrette drizzle, but it was sticky and didn't cover enough of the appetizer. We ordered a portobello sandwich, which was good, but it had 2 layers of portobello. Both my wife and I ended up taking off one of the layers. If we lived here, I probably give it another chance and try some more options on the menu. We really like the food here, but feel it's a bit overpriced. Also, this place is really noisy, so don't expect an intimate experience.

Nice restaurant for those with no food allergies. Friendly staff. However, they had only two entrees that were gluten free, which is weak. Worse, when I asked about gluten-free options, the server said, "We can work on making any necessary changes on the menu," but then went on to inform me that no, they didn't have any gluten-free buns/bread (there goes over half of the choices), and that the corn tortillas were not gluten-free (you have to really search hard to find a corn tortilla that isn't gluten-free!). So my father and I, who both have celiac disease, were forced to have, you guessed it, a salad. How hard is it to keep some gluten-free buns in the freezer, charge an extra buck or two, and open up half of the menu for people like me? Needless to say, we won't be returning. read more
