Great little cozy atmoshpore, our waitress (who's name we did not catch) was one of the BEST waitresses ever! Knew what we needed before we even did! We had the most amazing spinach salad, grouper fish, the special that night and the pork chop from the menu. Perfectly cooked, beautiful presentation and flavor was heavenly! For dessert, even though we were stuffed, was the Chocolate Creme de Pot....OH LORD, it was the MOST delicious dessert, ever! I was given a gift certificate to Baxters so I decided to try it. First off I was a little put off at first because they didn't have space for my family of 6 so me and my husband decided to go at a later date by our selves. We were very please with the whole experience from our wine and appetizers to our dinner and desert everything was perfect and yummy. Only down side is I don't think its kid friendly so it will make it a little difficult for us to return because we normally dine with our kids and it is a little spendy. It's a bistro, menu is consistent enough to make you happy to return for favorites and offers interesting newbies daily. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Sandpoint. I have never had a disappointing meal there - lunch or dinner. The shrimp tacos on the lunch menu are the bomb and the duck confit and meatloaf on the dinner menu are to die for. Not to mention their key lime pie..... best I've ever had. Stopped here for lunch and arrived just as it opened at 11am. We ordered our drinks and my hubby a burger and I had the Bahn Mi with pork. It took 25 minutes for our food to arrive, which I felt was a little long as there was only us and 1 other couple when we ordered. My hubby said the burger was very good. My Bahn Mi had lots of meat but very little of the pickled vegetables that you expect and they did not have much flavor, so to me it felt more like a nice pork sandwich. I won't come back. $12 for a Shrimp Caesar salad the size of a side salad. Cost is only #2 problem. The shrimp was over cooked, rubbery and charred and completely over-seasoned. If the food was good, I could let be with the size. Good thing I was hungry or I would not have finished. read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did; such was not the case, however. Our waiter greeted us in a timely and courteous manner, arranged the menus so that we would see the separate drink menu along with the food. It started out satisfactory. He took our drink orders, built rapport, and we took the opportunity to peruse the menus. I was a little set back by the prices, ex. $6 for a Caesar salad, $5 extra to add a chicken breast, but I accepted it as typical snobby bistro style. I value my money, because I work to earn it, so I asked the waiter why it was $5 to add chicken to a caesar; he gave a vague "because of the food cost" in response. Nothing resembling a reason that would pass muster; no explanation of "it's free range, certified organic chicken breast" for example. That, I wouldn't have batted an eyelash at; I understand and appreciate the reasons behind the cost of clean foods. Nonplussed, but still willing to be impressed, I ordered it anyway; my companion got an $8 burger (no cheese or bacon, mind you) with a small portion of fries. We were the only table in the place until after our food was served, and a man that I assume was the owner or manager even came out to offer me freshly ground pepper on my salad. My chicken breast was barely on the cooked side - it still had the texture of raw meat - which I was willing to forgive, since it was cooked enough to eat safely. At the end of the meal, when the waiter was taking our dishes, I let him know about the barely cooked meat and that I wasn't complaining, just letting the cook know. We get our hand written bill, and I noticed that the numbers didn't tally up to the total written at the bottom. I brought it to the waiter's attention, he offered to redo the math, and walked back quickly to explain that his math was correct. I asked him to explain, because the numbers added up to $2 less than the total he gave. He pointed to his tally marks on the bill next to our drinks, saying that we needed to double the amount. I clarified that the drinks were $2 each and not $2 for both (this was another irritation, since they were cans of soda and $2 is an exorbitant amount for a can of soda) and pointed out that he needed to write the correct total amount next to the item, because customers are going to be adding up what is written, not searching for hidden math equations on their bill. He actually argued that point, saying it was very clearly written; I'll admit to being nearly shocked at his attitude over a simple miscommunication - on his part, no less. Customer service: failed, no tip for you, buddy boy! What was even more irritating is that the manager/owner who had come out earlier witnessed the entire thing and didn't step in at all. read more

We had heard good things about this restaurant so we decided to try it out this morning. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the decor. Our server came right over to greet us. When he brought our drinks he spilled some of mine on the table. Never acknowledged it or offered to wipe it up. We got our breakfast quickly except for my toast that didn't come till I was finished with my meal. Waited for awhile to get our check, finally had to ask for it. The owner is at the place every night. Super rad dude. Was in town for 6 days on business and ate there 3 times. EVERYTHING ON THE MENU IS DELICIOUS. First night- prime rib. Rare and it was bloody perfect. Next night the most perfect pork or lamb chops- I can't remember, but either way, to die for. Literally. I've been going there with some vegetarians who I love and respect and they've been getting a grilled portobello burger. So the last night, I had to eat two, because they were too good not too! I'm serious. Our brains don't have the capacity to understand the goodness capable from those portobello burgers, until you experience it for yourself. When I dine out I look for interesting food in an atmosphere which does not intrude into the experience. It is the food which is important. Is it fresh and does it live up to its menu description. Lastly, is the portion reasonable for a grown man eating dinner. Not huge industrial portions like a franchise feeding trough, not belly busting, but a meal. Having enjoyed both the ambiance and food at Baxters I can state the place is nice, the food well prepared, and they leave 1/3 to 1/2 the meal in the kitchen! To leave an average restaurant hungry after spending $25+ per head w/I drinks is ridiculous. To the owner : Has anyone ever asked off a doggy bag ? I seriously doubt it. read more

We loved this place so much that we went there for dinner 2 out of the 4 nights we were visiting Sandpoint. We had a party of six the second night, so we really got to try everything. The cioppino was fantastic and my favorite main course. My husband loved the duck and the salmon might be the best I've ever had! We liked the mussels so much, we ordered two. My nephew gobbled up the meatloaf and mashed potatoes like it was his last meal on earth. The only negative thing we experienced was how long it took to get our food both nights, but I'd rather wait if it means the food is this good. The owners came to our table both nights and are really nice and are working hard to make Baxter's a great restaurant. Do yourself a favor and order the key lime pie for dessert. Service was friendly. It wasn't busy at all for a Friday night. We got our order taken promptly nut had to wait 30 min for our food. Everyone liked their food. Meatball sliders, lobster roll, portabella burger. My mother in law liked her steamers but thought the broth was too fishy. Desserts were expensive-$7-7.50 and our chocolate pot de creme wasn't very good. Very small and covered in blueberries. We thought we received the cobbler by mistake. My wife and I just ate here last night. Unfortunately there wasn't room for us inside so we had to site out front and the metal table was on an angle so we had to be careful about our food sliding off the table. The wait for our food was long but worth it in the end. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and I loved it. The servers were also very friendly but at times lacked a little in attentiveness. Don't bother unless you are a local. The place was busy the bar was empty. The bartender was busy closing servers checks. I sat there with no acknowledgement. Then a person comes to the bar and the hostess ask him if he had a Togo so she took care of him while I sat there with still no acknowledgement. I have had dinner there when I am in town. We were in Sandpoint for a family birthday weekend. I am so glad we chose this restaurant! We were seated as soon as we walked in (we had reservations). The service was great! I was so impressed that all of the waiters/waitresses helped out even if it was not "their table". If they saw a glass needed to be filled or a plate taken away, they did it. The food was fabulous!
