The views down here are amazing. I love riding, or walking through the area whenever I'm in Charleston. On a sunny day, this is the perfect place to be! This is a long and lovely area. I'm not giving it 5 because I've been to better but I say for this city, it's a 5. Nice place to walk the dog, to stop, appreciated the architecture of the mansions, see the schooners, rigged tall ship, cargo ships, ferries and sailboats. There's that nice pineapple fountain on one end and I'd not walk the entire length. I was already tired so we got in the car and moved to the other end to the park with that various statues (even Stede Bonnet the pirate captured there which was a cool history) and expensive mansions. I looked up a few prices. They go from 5-10 million on average. I didn't look them all up. It's a nice place to sit or walk your dog; worth a visit. If you do what I did and go to the pineapple fountain (and use a parking meter) just walk about 5 minutes either direction and you've done that area enough. It's not that special except the view on the water and the fountain. Then get in your car and go to the opposite end and walk 15 minutes along there and you'll catch the other good views in the water and the mansion. I don't know what was in the middle. I'm suspected maybe some canons and grass and benches. I don't think anything there you'll miss. read more

Really cool place to walk around and enjoy Charleston with views of the harbor and historic homes. It is very walkable and accommodating with plenty of on street parking available at most any time. One of my favorite places to go and walk around at all times of the year. Good for exercise and fresh air. read more

Why the Battery deserves five stars? Excellent question I asked myself. If you have visited Charleston or live here and have not yet been to The Battery...Hello. Please unzip the bubble you are in and see what is in front of you. 1. The official starting point of the American Civil War. For that alone it is worth the visit to see where soldiers fought 150 plus years ago. 2. A major pressure spot from Hurricane Hugo in 1989 3. White Point Garden with its Gazebo is a spot where you will catch many a wedding, picnic or frolicking dog. 4. The sunrises are breathless. Period!!!! 5. It is a beautiful place to walk or jog. 6. Free parking all around (Not much of that in Charleston) 7. A chance to see dolphins or even an occasional sea otter 8. Great people and sail boat watching. 9. Perfect spot to look at some of the best architecture on the peninsula. There you have it. Why The Battery earns a well deserved 5 stars. read more

Nice walk through beautiful neighborhoods that are well maintained and with easy access. We came on a summer day and found the weather to be nice with the cool breeze. I would definitely recommend a walk through if you are nearby at the park. There are limited bathrooms in this areas so make sure to plan accordingly. Bottom line..nice place for a stroll if you are in the neighborhood. The homes are very well maintained and are easily accessible from the park which has free parking up to 2 hrs. This area has sooo much to offer. Great views of the harbor, beautiful homes, lots of history and a very shaded park to rest and play. We enjoyed walking through the park and then along the harbor to look at the houses and feel the cool breeze coming off the water. read more

Just go. Nice views of the water, free street parking for a couple hours that lets you walk around and see the area. A number of nice walks you can set off on from here, or just stop and enjoy the views. No bathroom facilities in the park, closest one is several blocks away at the park, and not too many benches to sit down. Part of that is by necessity with the walk overlooking the water and how wide it is, with the oleander on one side and the water on the other, but still would've improved things. Waterfront park area. A peaceful and breezy place. Back in the day pirates would be hung from trees here. Now they haunt the place apparently. Some artillery equipment placed out in the park. There is a boardwalk with some cool palm trees. A good spot for shade from SC sun in the park. No public restrooms. You might even see a couple of dolphins. read more

Excellent place to visit, check out the statues, waterfront & so many trees with character. Fort Sumter can be seen in the distance from the Battery. The bay was rough today & the wind high, but it felt good watching the waves . Carriage tours roam through the park, extolling the virtues & history of so many of the beautiful homes along the park. Many of the homes are being renovated this spring, and there are just as many up for sale. Charleston has a Historical society, that requires a certain manner of upkeep for the homes in the Battery areas. read more

This walk along the seawall provides outstanding views of the harbor and many very impressive historic buildings. We love the free parking here as well, a rarity these days. It is a fairly long walk to most of the places we hang out in town, but works out well to park and ride bikes from here, which we like to do from time to time. read more

Words can not do justice to the beauty and feeling one gets while exploring The Battery...but I am going to try! At the very tip of the Charleston peninsula, you will find what is known as "The Battery". Stroll along the promenade, made from the sea wall that lines the edge of The Battery as you look out over the Cooper River to views of Fort Sumter, Castle Pickney, and Sullivan Island's lighthouse. If you get here early enough, you will capture an amazing sunrise over the Lowcountry. As you round the bend, the Cooper River meets the Ashley River, and across the water you see James Island and Folly. The promenade stretches all the way down Murray Boulevard where it meets Tradd Street. This is a popular spot for jogging, fishing, and catching glowing sunsets. The Battery gets to boast that it hosts some of the most beautiful, unique, and oldest homes in the city. Every one is unique and typically comes with an interesting history. In the midst of The Battery is White Point Garden. You will find the park lined with cannons that were actually used, or ready for use, during the Civil War. There is LOTS of history here, but I'll let you discover that for yourself ;) Lots of locals dub this area as one of their favorite spots in Charleston. It is definitely a "Must Visit" when in Charleston. So grab a loved one, a blanket, and after a walk along the water, end your day together watching the sun descend slowly on another perfect Charleston day. read more

I love walking this area. Beautiful views. Always felt safe.

What a relaxing place , lots of trees , monuments and some breathtaking views . Then there was a large walk way back to old town right up Charleston Harbor. We even saw dolphins. There was a great pier to sit on just down from the cruise ship port. Had a ship not been in the photo of the bridge would have been great. Along the Battery, you will see some of the oldest and largest homes in Charleston. They are beautiful! Look up the homes for sale on Zillow - they are stunning inside. The Battery is beside a small park, and beyond the park is the ocean. The area makes for a lovely walk. read more

The Battery, the furthest point of Charleston right on the waterfront is a historic park that's perfect for a nice leisurely stroll, picnic, or just cooling down with the breeze and shade of the trees. There's a large grass area for relaxing and old canons that are fun for kids to explore. There's even a giant pavilion to add to the southern charm. Go for a walk and picture the house you will eventually retire and end by! It is so much fun. See if you can guess which house is owned by the Piggly Wiggly guy. Hand. There is a giant pig no stone in his yard. You can walk away from it up towards Rutledge or rather Broad Street and see all the rich houses. So many houses to see. Such a beautiful water. read more

The iconic image of Charleston that stands out to me is the Battery with a view to Castle Pinckney, Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie and the Ravenel Bridge with Mount Pleasant in the far background. This is the birthplace of the Civil war. Residents in the mansions witnessed, safely from their rooftops, the original incursions as fireworks displays, the first of which was the firing on Fort Sumter. "The First Battle of Fort Sumter opened on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery fired on the Union garrison. These were the first shots of the war, and continued all day, watched by many civilians in a celebratory spirit."1 I spent hours out here and in adjacent Waterfront Park just sitting and gazing. There is river- pleasure and oceangoing merchant traffic, as well as the Carnival Esctasy. You can people-watch to your heart's content and see dolphins playing, all with a gentle breeze wafting. Sometimes the breeze is not so gentle as those residents who endured Hugo in 1989 from here could attest. The entire area was inundated.
