Excellent KC bbq at its best. But, even better on a Thursday or Sunday as the full Rack of bbq baby back pork ribs are only $16. - see attached photo as I almost fainted from the portion size once served! Eventually, I boxed up some for lunch the next day. Only needed to added a quart of fine cole slaw to complement the sweet and tangy ribs/sauce. Was able to wash everything down perfectly with $2 (yes, $2 all day and everyday), 12oz Miller beers. My only regret is not being able to try the baked beans. However, this will be my goal when/if I ever return to Kansas City. The normal bbq counter service was friendly and quick while the decor is an historic sports themed.

Bates was recommended to us by a local and it didn't disappoint. Walk in order of the board. They had a special going on Thursday night. Full slab for $16.00 what a deal. Ended up ordering Cole slaw as a side. The ribs were very tasty and fell off the bone. The sauce was sweet and tangy delicious. The slaw was very good more on the tangy side. I like it more creamy, but Cole Slaw is made so many ways. The staff were friendly and service was great. The atmosphere was great warm woods and sports decor everywhere. If you're looking for good bar-b-que this is your place.

    Dry meat

My attempt at finding half way decent smoked meats and/or bbq in th Kansas City area continues. Being from Texas and also living in North Carolina, finding something comparable is a struggle. As I've been told by may LC BBQ is different. Not only is it different it is lacking. This week o tried this place. I asked a lit their brisket and advised I don't want dried out brisket, I wa sh formed they trim all fat off the brisket, that equates to dry, flavorless leather meat. I passed and asked how the chopped pork was, I was told it was good so I tried they. I guess I should have asked if they pull the fat and flavor off it also, as they do. As you can see in the pictures, it's dry. I guess people who like dry now leather meat, flavorless meat will enjoy the place. Couldn't even get the smoke taste out of it. I will give them create for the container potatoe salad, a little bit of salt and it was pretty decent. Also, look at my receipt, charged for a medium drink buttons they only have small cups. Of your really hurting so much to chest people out of a drink just shit the place down. Ffs. Just another lansas city area dry flavorless meat experience.

    Ribs

This is our favorite BBQ place. I grew up Going to the OG Bates City BBQ and this is just what I would expect. They are always consistent. The ribs just fall off the bone and really can't be beat. The fresh fries and delicious and they don't skimp on servings.

Classic looking BBQ shop. The menu is a bit hard to find when you walk up but they have a sign that points to it so doesn't take long. I went with the lunch special today which was a Rib meat sandwich in a Tommy Boy (big sized) and Onion rings. I was excited to see this since I don't see a lot of BBQ places that do rib meat sandwiches. The meat was juicy and had a good flavor. The three sauces all had good flavor. (Original, Hot and F'in Hot) Onion rights as a side was a large size and were nice and extra crispy. Staff was friendly and helpful.

FPO and I met up with some friends on an early Saturday for lunch and just to hang out. We picked Bates City Bar-B-Que. It's a nice, family owned place with a friendly feel to it. There's a private lot with a lot of convenient parking Part of their decor is license plates from around the country and their collection is very impressive. And of course, no self-respecting bbq restaurant in KC would be complete without Chiefs memorabilia on the wall. They have self serve fountain Pepsi products and a small selection of bottled beers (behind the counter, of course, lol). While the others had a variety of Bud Light, Heineken, and Coors Lite, I went wild and had a Pepsi. I don't remember the last time I drank soda and it was fabulous. There's just something about fountain sodas that can't be beat. FPO and I split the Mixed Plate ($21.00). It has ribs, two choices of meat, two sides, fries, white bread, and a pickle. We picked the brisket and burnt ends. I liked the ribs the best. The brisket is thin sliced, which is not my favorite, and the burnt ends we got were a little dry. Friends told us that's not usually the case. It's a nice enough place that I would go back and give the burnt ends another try. I still don't eat a lot of beef or pork, so it'll probably be at least a few months until we try again.

Kansas City has some of the best barbecue in the world, and lots of famous places to get it. One of the best has to be Bate's City BBQ! I rarely order anything but a slab of ribs and fries, but the sandwiches and other sides are equally delicious. You can taste the pride in every bite here. These guys love what they do and it shows. Great service and a cool, quirky setting in a strip mall off of Quivera. The walls are lined with KC sports memorabilia in one wall and license plates and funny signs in the others. Great place and affordable food makes it one of the best BBQ joints in KC!

    Fries and combo Mixed Plate

My first time here and it didn't disappoint. I had a 2 meat combo with ribs. Not a fan of slaws or beans so I got a mountain of fries. The kids'll be happy! Meat was tender and ribs fell apart with just a plastic fork. Sauce was not overpowering nor wangy. Service was fast and friendly but I was the only one in line with only one other patron in the restaurant. Music was mostly country but also Will Smith and loud enough to enjoy but not so loud that it was overpowering.

We shared a variety of dishes, including nachos, sandwiches, and a few Rashee plates. My personal favorites were the ribs, cornbread, and collard greens. The nachos were perfect for sharing and disappeared quickly. The kids loved the mac and cheese and cornbread, while the guys couldn't get enough of the burnt ends. In general, I think BBQ is often freshest during lunch hours, but we still had a fantastic reunion dinner. The manager even stopped by our table to check on us and shared a bit of the restaurant's history, which was a nice touch. Our family had a great evening and a memorable meal!

I have been itching to try this place for a long time. I was disappointed…read more Service - This is a tough one to rate. I saw many tables being taken care of by waiters, and even the store manager coming out and doing his part for those sitting at tables near ours. Our table, for some reason, was being covered by the bartender. He did stop by... but had a weird vibe of trying to be our buddy. He did not act or look like staff. But he did take the order and deliver the food. I think we are going to go with 3 stars. Ambiance - Well, the design is nice enough. There is no personality, and the building could be utilized for any kind of eatery with little to no changes. Normally, that would get a standard 3-star... dropping it to a 2-star in this case because this is to be a BBQ place... and the smell of smoked, roasted meat... is seriously missing. Food - Again, nothing wrong with it. In fact, the flavour of our sides was actually rather good. So 4 stars... except... Everything, as a side, either came from a tub or a frier. I began to be seriously suspicious of the BBQ, the sides, and the kitchen on mass. It is almost as if everything is preportioned somewhere else and just used a suvied, frier, or grill, to make it plate-ready. So we are gonna drop to 3-stars. I also noticed that they have whiskey, bottles, and cans. No taps. Though they do serve all drinks in a glass. The whole place gave me a vibe of a quick setup that they could pick up and leave at any time. To wrap this up... If this BBQ place were somewhere else, it would get rated rather high. But this is Kansas City. There is MUCH better BBQ, cheaper, just down the road... no, it doesn't matter which road. My honest opinion... this is a half-hearted attempt at a BBQ restaurant and more of a quickly tossed together venture to capitalize on area BBQ. Spend your money at a real BBQ place and let this chain go back to the areas that don't really know any better. (See Dickey's).

Brisket was unwrapped near our table and was dripping juices - spice rub and doneness was right on. The meat was so tender and flavorful that I didn't really need P&F's BBQ Sauce- which was also very good and a bit different from traditional KC style sauce. Pork Burnt ends aren't my favorite but these were tasty, very well spiced and were complimented well by the P&F sauce. While I thought the brisket was the star of the show, the smoked and fried chicken wings were a close second to the brisket and seemed very popular with the crowd at Discourse. When chicken is smoked well, it carries the smoky taste throughout tender and juicy meat and these were smoked well. Can't forget Discourse Brewing, I tried their Used 8 track Dortmunder Lager. I like German style lagers and pilsners and this choice well complimented P&Fs BBQ. Before finishing for the evening I had a Platinum Label "I'm a Dinosaur" Helles - it was light and not too hoppy. I'd have both again. Wednesday is Trivia Night at Discourse and while I didn't stay for it, the place was packed an hour before trivia started. All in all a great evening. If you like BBQ, Beer or trivia or want to hit a trifecta - try Discourse Brewing on a Wednesday night!

First let's talk about those beans. 1. The beans are thick which I like. 2. I think they must use hoisin in them. To me they have an Asian flavor. I was hoping for something smokier and not so sweet. 3. There are nice chunks of meat in the beans. 4. They are missing something. Maybe some kick to go with the sweet and tang. Or maybe a bell pepper to add some complexity. Definitely need to cut down on whatever is making them taste so weirdly sweet. Let's get into the ribs. Let me say first that I prefer beef over pork. I didn't realize they were pork or packed in styrofoam until I got home. They were kinda cold. The ribs were tender and not overly sauced. There was not much fat. The sauce is sweet and rather thin. They do not have pickles. Maybe a pickle would have made it better for me. Overall I found everything overly sweet. I would have liked something salty (did someone say pickle?) My boyfriend liked the ribs and thought the beans were pretty good. For me, it was all meh. Since I'm the hunter and gatherer in our little family, I doubt we will be back.
