I didn't grow up eating them--my family didn't have much money--but I discovered them later while exploring little neighborhood spots around Tampa and Ybor City. Somewhere along the way, the Cubano became my sandwich. So when I ordered a Cubano, a bag of chips, and a Mexican Coke from Thompson Bros Cubanos, I expected a good lunch. Instead, I got a taste of home. The sandwich was everything a Cubano should be. The pork was tender, the ham and Swiss were perfectly balanced, the mustard and pickles added just the right bite, and most importantly, the bread was authentic. If you've ever had a real Tampa Cubano, you know the bread is what makes it. Crisp on the outside, soft inside, and sturdy enough to hold everything together without getting in the way. Talking with owner Clint Thompson made the experience even better. He grew up in Tampa and has his Cuban bread shipped from La Segunda Bakery in Ybor City--the same bakery that's been making Cuban bread since 1915. That isn't marketing; it's respect for the tradition. Clint greeted me like an old friend, and we spent time talking about Florida, food, and his plans to open a full Florida-inspired restaurant. After hearing his vision, I can honestly say it's one of the restaurants I'm most excited to see become a reality. If you've never had an authentic Tampa-style Cubano, this is the place to start. And if you're someone who misses Florida the way I do, don't be surprised if the first bite transports you back there. This wasn't just one of the best sandwiches I've had in Kansas City--it reminded me why I fell in love with Cubanos in the first place.

The rice and beans were some of the best I've had, and the Cuban was top notch. I really liked the bread, it was toasty but not dry. The service was quick and friendly, can't wait to have another one sometime!

On the advice of the friendly young lady at the counter I enjoyed a wonderful banana shake while waiting for my first go at their Midwest version of the Philly cheesesteak. Happy to report that while their signature mammoth pork tender is still my favorite the cheesesteak was way above average. West KC is blessed to have a bunch of folks doing it the right way. It's essentially an old school drive up diner. You're going to find classics here like burgers, fries, tenderloins, and milkshakes. They even have malts which to me is the true sign of an old school establishment. This is the kind of spot that I imagine Harry Truman would have visited back in the day. At any rate I had to get the tenderloin as it's the most hyped thing on their menu, and it lives up to the legend as for around 11 dollars it will feed you and your family of four for days. It's that big. I did take mine home because it was so hot I just couldn't eat outside, and it was too big for a car lunch. I ended up weighing it and it was a bit over 1lb. Damn, that's value. The french fries were kind of mid to me, but I liked the onion rings. I think next time I'm going to go for a milkshake.
