Renting a bike from Bateman's was super easy. Unfortunately we arrived with only 2 hours until close so all they had were road bikes. Bikes come with locks and a helmet. The woman who helped us out was very friendly; however, I had asked for a map of the city and any advice on where to bike. I would have liked it if they had shared more on specific routes to take especially since they knew we were from out of town. General travel advice: Biking around a town guarantees the most encompassing experience of any city, especially Toronto which is extremely bike-able and walkable. In a little less than 2 hours, we were able to cover a lot of ground!

I had the best experience at Bateman's Bicycle Company. I was coming to Toronto from NYC and wanted to rent a road bike to do longer rides. I called the company the day before I arrived and Rob helped to put a bike on reserve for me. Was really helpful about everything - what kind of pedals, size of bike, etc. I showed up at the shop and they tuned up the bike and had me riding through the streets in no time. Rob even put lights on my bike because I was doing a sunset ride that evening. Everyone in the shop was really friendly and the bike was perfect. I couldn't ask for more, thanks so much to Bateman's for being such an amazing bike shop!

Menchies reward for a helmet mission accomplished!

Unfortunately my Co2 inflator malfunctioned: I had a repaired tire but no air. A quick online search showed that Dream Cyclery was just a few blocks away. I knew as a reputable shop that they would have air available for those who need it in a pinch. And yes, as I arrived, there was the air hose as I had hoped. Noticing it was only Schraeder-ready I went into the shop to borrow an adapter and say thanks for the rescue. No thanks needed. Just 5 bucks. That's right, any cyclist with Presta valves must pay for the tiny brass adapter in order to use the "free air." The staffer seemed embarrassed to be charging me $5 for a piece that costs no more than a nickel. With the next nearest bike shop a significant walk away, I had no other choice. How chintzy is that! It wouldn't be so obnoxious if they were charging a dollar to cover the cost of providing them, or asking for a donation to a favourite charity (Cycle Toronto?) but this feels likes mean-spirited gouging. Looks like a nice shop. Sorry I will not be visiting again.

I am just now getting into road cycling, and they had me ready to go with all the essentials in a matter of minutes. I've already been there 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and I'd encourage anyone looking for a local bike shop to give them a visit!

Review is based on "shopping experience" during the lockdown…read more Store is located on the south side of Lakeshore, literally just West of Humber College and directly across the street from Snack Shack. It is parallel street parking here - I don't think anyone pays if they're in/out. Lockdown procedure here is 1 customer at a time, with masks, and entrance area is roped off. Once you enter, an employee will greet you, grab the stuff you're looking for, and you go from there. So unfortunately, there's no real browsing. It's a better experience if you know what you want! My first experience here was pretty positive and efficient as I already knew the accessories (bell, bottle cage) that I needed and wasn't being super picky about them. The girl who helped me was friendly and she even came out to my car to determine whether or not my existing bottle cage was broken, it was. Prior to driving out here, I was on their website and apparently, IF you buy a new bike here, you get free tuneups - not free flat/chain fixing - FOR LIFE! That's a pretty good incentive if this store happens to carry the bike that you're looking for.

I proceed to buy the pedals, fender, and rack from their limited selection. I paid for general maintenance and got them installed free. the fender was installed shoddily and rubbed. I had him fix it and it still rubbed again a few days later. Then my bike fell from a bike rack and a piece broke from the rack. I went in and he said "oh so it didn't just break, you dropped your bike. next time don't drop your bike. $5". Bikes fall and falling from a bike rack shouldn't cause a piece to break... I went into skiis and biikes and they completely realigned my fenders and it hasnt rubbed since. A few weeks later the piece they sold me for $5 broke again and the bike didn't even fall. I asked for a refund on the rack and they angrily gave me the $5 back for the part they charged me for. They said it's my fault for keeping a bike in a bike rack.
