I've dealt with Urbane only twice at this new location, but it's been an ok experience overall. You might remember them when they used to be on John and Queen a few years ago. The first time I wanted a banana seat for my kids 20" bike to give it the retro look of the 70s. The person at the counter didn't know what a banana seat was. So I checked my phone and the first thing that popped up was the YouTube of the song "Banana bike" which is hella cute. Still drawing blanks with her, so okay, no dice on the seat, time to move on as there are many bicycle shops in the area, no need to dwell on this one. (I went to a few more, without any luck, and finally ended up hitting the jackpot at Spin Cycle, which is the solo guy operating out of a container at Market 707, thank you!) The second time was a curbside when I wanted a helmet light after getting my bicycle mounted one stolen when I parked my bike for a 30 minute Chiro appointment. They were quick and efficient when I called them from outside on the phone and brought me what I needed. Easy. Paid for it at the doorway and was on my way with a sweet $55 USB light that can stay on my helmet and I can bring it with me when parking my bike. Thanks Urbane! read more

The worst experience I have ever had with a business of any type is with Urbane Cyclist. After a ride from NYC to Toronto I entrusted my beautiful Salsa Vaya to them for packaging and shipping back to my home in LA (cool, a worker's co-op, lets support them, I thought). It took them several days before they would give me a quote, by then, I was back in LA and stuck having to pay the $745 CD they were going to charge me. But, they said: Yes, its expensive, but we will package it really well so it can't get damaged in shipping. Of course, when I finally received the bike (6 weeks later) there were three big dents in the top tube. Of course I had it insured, but Urbane was bizarrely unhelpful in the whole insurance process (repeatedly refusing to give me a copy of the invoice with CanPar, which, when I finally received it I saw that Urbane had marked up the shipping, when they told me I would pay $160 for their services boxing the bike and I would be billed at cost for the shipping). Urbane also admitted that they had trouble removing a pedal, which makes me believe that the damage was caused by them trying to wrench the pedal off while the bike was held in a bike stand. I really can't imagine how that much damage could have been caused, particularly on the top tube which is pretty well protected, during shipping. No one talked to the bike shop in LA that received the bike, and reported the damage to me immediately. CanPar (three and a half months later) refused to honor their insurance. And Urbane, which either destroyed my frame in the disassembly process, or by failing to adequately pack it, has been nothing, well, but defensive and hostile. So, I paid $745 to have my bike destroyed. No one taking any responsibility. And I will have to pay another approx $1500 US to replace the frame. read more

Great store for a bike purchase, not so much for the service. Bought my bike here. Solid street bike used it to bike in rain and snow (literary) for about 1.5 years. Around this March the riding just did not seem right so I scheduled a service appointment. The entire service on my bike cost me around $600 (that's my bike: https://www.marinbikes.com/ca/bikes/2021-nicasio). It was break cables, new rear cassette, chain etc. Biked it for less that 2 months afterwards and there was already something wrong with the bike. It would somewhat skip on a certain gear, which just really should not be happening. Took it to another store where got recommendation to replace cassette (LOL) or chain. Ended up replacing the chain, and still have troubles. Wish I could be a mechanic to fix this stupid mess. read more

Thank you Urbane I have two BionX kits mounted on Trek bikes, two years old. One needed service and to my shock, BionX is no more, kaput! There goes my three year warranty down the drain. I brought it into Urbane and they did the best they could to resolve the problem (at this point replacement parts are not available). Recently, I bought a new rear wheel for a 9-speed hybrid bike...took in my old wheel, had the cassette transferred over with no issues whatsoever. All in the space of less than one week, considering that they're approaching their busy tuneup season. My experiences with urbane are conflicting. On the sales side, I think they are very good. They take time with you and really help you chose a bike that suits your needs. The sales staff are friendly and knowledgable. I have bought three bikes here over the years. Despite a two star rating, I would probably buy a bike here again. Where they are really poor is on the service-side. I cycle year round, 25km round trip to work every day. Any bike that is put through that needs servicing. I would run a mile before bringing my bike here for service. The experience is the complete opposite of the sales side. It is rude, arrogant, over-priced, and service staff constantly recommend services that are not necessary. I have brought my bike in for the most basic of things, like a puncture - then a dreaded phone call comes a few hours later where some snooty mechanic is running me through why I need to spend hundreds on the bike. Then at pick-up time, they will also stick you with a 'cleaning fee'. Then they have the nerve to put a tip jar strategically positioned at the service desk. Only bike shop I have ever come across that dings people with cleaning fees, and put a tip jar out for overpriced service. If you are a car owner, and are weary of bringing your car to the dealership because of all the unnecessary nonsense the pressure you into, Urban is the cycling equivalent of this. If all this overpriced, exaggerated service meant a noticeable difference, I would consider it, but it doesn't. Same service as the next place. read more

I really like this place. Totally different vibe from the elitist Bikes on Wheels. I bike daily but don't know much about bikes or fixing them. But I never feel shamed about it here. Staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. My bike seat was stolen, so I walked it 1.5 hours here to get it fixed (dedication). I was able to get my post measured, choose a new seat, have everything replaced within 45 minutes. Prices were also really fair since they had a good selection of seats for every price point (beautiful Brooks seats to more budget friendly ones). They also have a good selection of everything else you need. Definitely will visit again! read more

Starting by saying I'm 2x vaxxed etc. Anyways, I went here to get fluid for my motorcycle (even though it's a bike store) when I walked in I was wearing a FULLY ENCLOSED COVERED MOTORYCLE HELMET. CLEARLY SAFER THEN A MASK IN TERMS OF SPREADING ANY AIRBOURNE GERMS. The women at the desk reminded me of the curb your enthusiasm episode of the disturbance in the kitchen where the manager doesn't give logical reason to anything they just repeat themselves like a robot. The woman told me I HAD to wear a mask and that my FULLY ENCLOSED HELMET where I would be Breathing only my own air wasn't sufficient. Logically this makes no sense especially if I'm going in and out. If someone is worried about covid in any length clearly a mask that is basically useless is much less effective then what I wore. Anywho I went outside put on the useless mask where I was now breathing my bacteria everywhere in the store.. then I bought the fluid (which by the way the staff had ZERO product knowledge of..and yes I should know myself but you know what I don't work in a bicycle store or a motorcycle shop I just ride one so I have less knowledge then people selling a product that they carry in their store) I actually went outside called my mechanic and he told me not to use it so I returned it which was a fine process...HOWEVER the logic and in-personable attitude the woman had is beyond me. At least acknowledge that the helmet is far more logical for health and safety but the company's policy is a mask. Ridiculous. read more

I haven't purchased a bike at Urbane, but I have used their service department several times. They are professional and honest - everything you could ask for. They will tell you what you must fix, what you should fix, and what would be nice to fix. If you have a budget, they'll work with it - they might not be able to do the best job, but can do the best at the price you're willing to pay. Of course, they are always busy so make sure you make an appointment ahead of time. Even if you don't have an appointment they will give a quick assessment on the spot and give you an estimate before taking your bike or telling you to come back at a later time. A couple tips: - they have free air! The hose is set to a standard PSI and will fill your tires in seconds - they are a co-op so all the employees have a stake in the business read more

I brought my bike in for a tune up and, despite calling every week to check on it, it wasn't ready for a full 5 weeks. It just seemed to fall through the cracks over and over again. The bike mechanics were apologetic but it doesn't make up for the fact that I was out of a bike for five weeks. The selection is good but the prices are on the higher end. read more

So after having my front tire replaced last year I noticed that the front wheel was a bit wobbly on my way home. But I have a plate and some screws in one wrist and sometimes on a good day things feel wobbly. I ended up using my other bike for most of last summer because it had better suspension for all the potholes. Now, with newly paved lanes on my ride to work, I was noticing again that the front wheel seemed "off". I need to stress that there was nothing of this ilk wrong with my bike before I got it back from them. They just replaced the front tube and tire. When I mentioned this to them today the guy was all "Oh, well it says here that we put a ticket on the bike saying that the front wheel axle was loose". What?? I bring in my bike to be fixed and you give it back to me broken? I still had to run errands and make it home on my bike. They admitted that this could potentially be dangerous, but made no attempt to fix the problem. The best the guy could do was to offer a costly repair that could maybe be done at some point after they looked at it. No thanks, Man. If I bring my bike in for servicing and it's worse off after that, you ought to do something to help me out. I wanted a second opinion. Turns out that the problem was a simple one: The bolts on the front tire were loose. I found this out after a guy at Bikes on Wheels in Kensington took 20 minutes to look at the wheel and ask the mechanic his opinion. Those dudes tightened the bolts for free and sent me safely on my way. I'm so tired of bike shops trying to take advantage of me because I'm a girl. See you later, Urbane. read more

I have been a customer of Urbane for at least ten or fifteen years. A couple of times, I went to other shops just to compare and there is no comparison. Excellent customer service, great location, top-notch and quality repair work, good prices and its a WORKERS CO-OP people so you gotta love that and the repair people are total gear heads and give so much love to each bike. I've purchased my commuter bike here and I'll probably get a fixie eventually as I've been pining for one since 2001. This shop is NOT a high-end shop contrary to what other reviewers say. This shop is for people who love bikes and actually use their bikes on a regular basis, if not every day. This is why a large amount of their patronage is from bicycle couriers and the year round commuters. If you expect their prices to compete with CDN Tire, then you will be disappointed. But consider this: CDN Tire bikes are designed to go from showroom to landfill in about 50kms or less. CDN Tire bikes are the kind that you ride twice, hang up in the garage, feel guilty about it 5 years later, try to ride it again but everything is seized so you hang it up again for another few years then eventually give it the toss to the curb. Urbane sells bikes in the MID range. Their prices are fair and their service is excellent. They won't sell you what you didn't ask for, nor will they pressure you into spending more than you should. I will continue to bring my commuter bike here for service whenever it needs it, and I will continue to recommend this place to family and friends. read more

On the hunt for a cheap (though new) bike, I'll admit I was a bit worried that I would be snubbed for staying on the low end of the price range. Happily, I received great service from a number of staff that day. They were patient as we walked through their rows of bikes, and extremely patient as I test-rode both different models and sizes. Even though I bought what ought to be their cheapest bike in stock, I wasn't treated like a second-class citizen. People have described Urbane as snobby, but I experienced nothing of the sort. They honoured my cyclist union discount (5% off the bike), and new bike purchases also grant you a 10% discount on accessories and parts (same as the union discount on accessories - understandably, they don't stack) - so stock up on that lock for your new wheels. You also get two free tune-ups with purchase. read more

After doing a lot of research online about bike locks, then checking the selection at three other nearby shops (Uncle Jacob's, Pedalinx, BoW) today before coming in to Urbane, I can say that the selection was the best in the neighbourhood for what I was looking for (higher end security). I also bought a full set of Pinheads. Now, I could have gone back to Uncle Jacob's and asked for the set to be ordered and saved $5 ($115 instead of $120), AND the fellow there said he'd install the set for $10. (I'm a bit wary of installing the headset pin correctly, plus I know I won't do it immediately.) But for simplicity's sake, I stayed at Urbane b/c they could install it while I waited and paid $10 more. (BTW Jacob's has last year's sets *very* inexpensively rn ($60 for 2-pc, $80 for 3-pc). Gotta say it seemed cheesy to be dropping $120 for Pinheads plus ~$150 for Abus lock and still be charged $5 labour per item for PH install (the reason I don't rate it five stars). BUT! I'm actually writing a yelp review for the 1st time b/c I was kind of amazed at the clarity of communication I experienced selecting the lock with Sam! (and how she interacted w/ other staff.) She was the only sales staff I dealt with in the four stores who told me things about the various locks that I didn't already know from internet research. But I tell ya, it was the *way* she told me the info that impressed me to no end. So, there you go sports fans, hope it helps. read more

Urbane is my first stop for all bicycle related needs while in Toronto. And as a dedicated year round cyclist commuter, that's quite often it seems. They have the friendliest staff I've met at a bike shop, and fair prices to match. To top that off, they have a great selection of bikes and accessories specifically catering to the commuter crowd. Something I've definitely appreciated is their tendency to be candid and recommend the best solutions without trying to sell me the most expensive parts. I've often left with a smaller bill because of their recommendations, and to me that's the best way to retain customers. A great space in a very convenient downtown location, I'd recommend Urbane to anyone looking for a good ride to zip around town or some friendly bike-related advice. read more

I stopped into Urbane Cyclist today because I had 30 minutes to kill before meeting a friend downtown and because I've seen it almost every day on the way to work. I want to change the tires on my mountain bike. I was after hybrid/street tires to replace the thick off-road tires which waste far more energy than they should due to high friction levels. For an urban commuter, thinner, smoother tires are the way to go. I spent about 10-15 minutes in the store before leaving completely disappointed. As a recently converted cyclist, I am constantly in search of improved gear, nicer bikes, and upgrades of all kinds. I bought a cheap used bike from Bike Pirates on Bloor St W [Which I highly recommend for anyone interested in cycling and not blow the bank in the process.] First, I walked past rows and rows of bikes in the retail area of the shop straight to the service department in the back. There is a reception area in the service department surrounded by glass cases of gear, plus things on the walls/shelves. There are doorways leading to two rooms; an office and the other looked like the service area. I stood in reception for about 5 minutes - no one came out to ask if they could help me. I even gazed inquisitively into the office, and the people clearly saw me - still didn't come out. I figured: "Fine, if they don't want my business, I'll take it somewhere else." From what I saw of the parts in the service area, things were extremely pricey in this shop anyways. Tires for $70 each. Axles for $150, $200 and up. My entire bike cost $80 at Bike Pirates! Yikes. Anyways, I left the non-service department and had a look at the bikes for the pure joie du vivre. This is a uber high-end bike shop. They had alot of really nice bikes. Their entry level bikes were about $500-600, and the cheapest one in the shop was about $450. The nice ones cost well over $1000. While I was there, I noticed a staff member helping out a lady who was obviously interested in getting into biking. Although I may be rushing to judgment, her physique led me to guess she was not a seasoned cyclist but rather an entry level, "let's try a new hobby" type person. Commendable, and I'm all for it. However, the bike he had her trying out cost like $1200! A price tag big enough to discourage or bankrupt even the best-intentioned prospective cyclist. I was really disappointed this shop had nothing to offer the entry-level cyclist, or value-oriented consumer. When I decided to get back into cycling as an adult, I bought something cheap. I wasn't sure how well it would work out with my lifestyle, and my commute to work [about 7km each way through fairly heavy traffic areas]. I've subsequently found that I like it very much, and in the future I will easily spend $500-$700 on a bicycle. We spend that much to ride the disgusting TTC for 5 months anyways, right? But the point is, that's helluva lot to spend on a hobby if you're not certain it's for you. I suppose shops like this have their purpose, but for someone interested in value and good service - keep looking. FYI: Later on that day, I stopped into a couple of shops on Bloor W between Lansdowne and Dufferin, and the staff were far more helpful and prices more reasonable. Tonnes of nice bikes for less than $600. Also, fair prices on tires - $20 each. Plus the staff actually had time to acknowledge my existence. A big plus. FYI*** Updated: I ended up going to Mountain Equipment Co-op the next weekend, and was extremely pleased with the outcome. The tires were about $11 each, and they only charged $5 per tire to install ($37 including tax). No waiting, they were able to do it in less than a half hour. I highly recommend going to MEC for any bike needs or other hobbies. I find their products are good quality, and also good value. Plus their staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Also, the guy who worked on my bike told me that by the spring MEC is going to be selling their own brand of bikes. Yay! Good value and amazing quality. No rip-offs here. read more

Have a bike and need some weird parts or a place that really know the urban bike back and front? This is THE place to go for everything urban. The shop sells everything from packs/paniers, fenders and rack to misc parts, tires and wheels. While the focus of this place is definitely an urban bike, you can probably find other parts that you could use that you normally can't find at your local bike shop. Things as simple as coloured brake cable housing are available in a rainbow of colours. Perfect for fashionable matching on your bike (matching colours is so hot right now). The prices are up and down. You'll find some things that are pretty cheap (and you can't find at most places) and some stuff overpriced. I haven't tried to price match with them, but I really doubt they wouldn't. Their shop in the back fixes all sorts of bikes, and they are super friendly as well. Guess what? They also have bike parking, so ride on in and take a look at what they have! read more

I'm a commuter and recreational cyclist. Since this store specializes in selling and servicing commuter and tourist bicycles, I give them a lot of business. The fact that it is a worker co-op gives it even higher marks from me, even though I've never bought my bike here, or had it serviced. Why four stars? I usually buy the parts for my bike here. I talk to their friendly knowledgeable staff, especially their service staff, and make the decisions on which drivetrain parts or rims I'll purchase. I do my own repairs at my local DIY bike shop Bike Pirates. So I use Urbane Cyclist as my parts supplier. If you are into recumbent bikes, or folding bikes, this is - by far - the best place in the city to make those purchases, as they are one of the few stores in Toronto that specialize in those types of bikes. As someone else pointed out, this is not a "high-end" race bike shop. You will not find a $10,000 carbon road bike here, but you might find a $7,000 recumbent one. Overall, a friendly, knowledgeable place to buy parts, accessories and especially folding and recumbent bikes. read more

This is where you need to go to get what you needed to getting to your bike. Ok, so here's the thing I find about bike shops: Regardless of how great you might think they are, there's always going to be one person out there who doesn't. Or maybe a few. But I generally find most bike shops to be pretty decent. That said, some are better than others. And this is one of them. The staff: Are all excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. There was once one guy in their service department once who had a bit of bike attitude. He was only there a few months. Other than that, the staff is as I described it AND usually stay there a long time which is a sign to me of a good business. They will tell you if a product is more expensive because it's better or just because a brand name makes it. They'll still say if the more expensive product is good or not, but won't try and guile you into paying more for no reason. The products: I ride track bikes, so their selection of that product is more limited, but they did have a couple Cinelli frames, and some complete bikes by KHS and their own brand name as well. What they seem to specialize in is parts. They are by my estimation, the best parts store in the city. Even though as I mentioned they are not a store that specializes in track bikes, they do have lots of track parts. They're one of the only stores that carry Phil Wood cogs and hubs in stock (not special order), and as far as I know are the ONLY store in Toronto to carry the Euro Asia Imports Cogs and Izumi Super Toughness track chain. They also have great selection of Paul and other high end hubs and parts from top brands like Thomson and h+son. Prices: Excellent. They once spent about 45 minutes trying to find the cheapest and best way for me to replace my drivetrain. It's a spacious friendly store. I highly recommend. 100% worth the trip! read more

This after wasting and standing around nearly 45 minutes.. Straight to BATEMANS (i.e BETTER); they had the bike and a lock ready for me to go (20 minutes before closing). All of the things I said in my previous review still apply, but I've had some recent experiences there that make me want to bump them up a star. I'm moving out of Toronto and I wanted to pack up my bikes in boxes rather than have them bang around in the truck. I'm a bike of a bike fanatic, so I needed 9 bike boxes. They are constantly building up new bikes, but space is limited and they usually break down the boxes right away: standard procedure. I asked if they could tuck some away, and they took my phone number. A couple of days later I got a call and they had 5 boxes for me. That is totally above and beyond the call of duty and hugely nice thing to do. Even if they can't get the rest, this is awesome, and I expect they'll have more for me in a few days. I was looking for other bits and pieces to help package up the bikes and a sales guy who was hanging out in the periphery overheard me and showed me a more permanent solution for spacing out the frame during shipping...I never knew such a thing existed and it was perfect! I don't know if just anybody would get this high-quality service there, maybe it's my charm or just that I stop by the place regularly for my bike bits. But whatever the case, I am now definitely a fan of the Urbane Cyclist. read more

Carradice, Brooks, All-City, and facial hair. I feel right at home. I'm definitely in the right demographic for Urbane Cyclist --- although they wouldn't suit everyone. A racer would probably find too much 1950s technology and too much weight; a casual cyclist would likely find something good enough and much cheaper somewhere else. But if you're into cycling style, and want to actually feel the size difference between a Carradice Lowsaddle Longflap and Barley rather than try to visualize it based on internet specs, this might be your place. There's Tern folders and Yuba cargo bikes, and Urbane's own city bikes, but I keep coming back to the Carradice and All-City displays. read more

His advice was pretty invaluable as I test rode bike-after-bike, even riding a few of them again just to make absolutely sure. Just so you know, bring Gov't ID and a credit card if you want to test ride something. Grange Park nearby is a great place to do it. Once sold, the bike takes a day or two to build (you don't get the floor model) and you also get 10% off any modifications or accessories you want to buy for your new ride. read more

Alright so first things first, their selection is pretty damn good. If you can't find it here then you better be confident at ordering online. However, after getting my beautiful set of rear brakes, I was asked if I would like them to install it for me. I thought why not, how much is it? And my jaw fucking dropped. Now this was awhile ago so I don't remember the exact figure, but damn son I do remember that the guy was saying my wheels also should be readjusted that each wheel would cost $30. To just loosen and tighten it properly. What? With the brakes and wheels it came to like $140. I couldn't freaking believe it so I went home, looked up a tutorial and did it myself. Of course I couldn't get it right for like an hour so I went to another bike shop and they readjusted the brakes for $5. Oh and also as the dude from Urbane was playing with my wheels he forgot to put the back brakes back on and my front one was fucked up too (I had cantilever brakes). So I've brought my bike in here a few times for repairs with no problems. But the last time will be the last. I needed a new back tire and tube. So i left the bike with them for the day went to work and then returned to pick up my bike. It was ready to go on time, I paid and left. Right when I started to ride my bike I noticed it was making a weird noise. I figured it was just the new tire so didn't think much of it. A couple days later while riding to work the back breaks just fell off. Seeing I was in the area of their shop I stopped off to see if they could help. When I first told them what happened the girl at the repair area told me they didn't take off the back breaks, but then she checked the order and admitted they did take them off for the repairs Now I know certain parts on a bike can't have gurantees like wheels or tubes, but clearly they didn't put the back breaks on properly. I mean a couple days later they just fall off? Now when I told them all this they didn't deny that they messed up but they also didn't say they messed up either. I wasn't looking for everything cost free, even though that should be the case. I would have settled for I pay for the parts they repair it for free or something. But they didn't offer anything. Although the products here are fab the staff knowledge is touch and go. I have been here on numerous occasions this summer and have received varied levels of knowledgeable service, however they were all quite nice. Their bike selection is quite nice and when I bought the last demo front light they had I was given a 10% discount. When I purchased my $179 Brooks seat the employee seemed very unsure of the differences between the different products and failed to provide me with any care information, claiming that it was in the box. When I got home I realized I had to buy oil for the seat which was not included and required another trip to the bike shop. read more

I have been looking for a new bike, and had researched what I needed ( an upright step through) . I reached out online and was pleased to get speedy response. They had my model in stock. Brenden greeting me and showed me the bike, and let me give it a test ride (highly recommend this for anyone who has not bought a bike in years). I was so impressed with the bike, I bought it and with Brenden's help chose the accessories I needed. Came back 2 days later and the bike was ready to go. Brenden was very patient and helpful - great customer service. They pre scheduled the 6 month maintenance check and told me how to register the bike with the Police. The Urbane Cyclist is a great spot to get a bike fixed. Even if you ride a BMX like me and they are mostly into mountain bikes and stuff. They never try to over charge me or get me to buy stuff I don't need. Which, has got to be the best endorsement ever. read more

I've been here twice. They're a bit overpriced when it comes to buying stuff from them but the service I got the first time I came here was great. I had just gotten in an accident with a car and the guy working here adjusted my brake which had been stretched because of the impact with the car door. For free. That was very nice of him. Unfortunately my second impression of the place was less than stellar. Staff was pretentious and they didn't have what I was looking for at a reasonable price. The price quoted was not the final price! The difference amounted to $50 above the quote, which was far more then I would have paid. In fact, I would not have had the work done if they had been honest in their original quote. When questioned, all staff said sorry, which while warranted did not rectify the situation of the misinformation and incorrect price quote. Not acceptable, feel scammed. Wont return and won't refer others. read more

I used Urbane's parts shop to build my own bike. I went in several times for assistance and since this was my first time doing this I was learning along the way. Each time I found the guys helping me out to be courteous, patient, and helpful. For example, I needed a few final parts a couple of which required my bike to be onsite like the seat post. After purchasing some of the parts from another bike shop I decided to bring my bike there for the measurements. This was a mistake and a waste of time as the owner couldn't seem to understand how to do this and actually had unnecessarily put my bike on one of his racks after which he suddenly started mentioning that we should discuss labour and the price of grease. I was patient but when he told me to come back in a few hours I took my bike and left. I immediately went to Urbane and the guy in the parts department had my parts measured and in my hands within 10 min with no mention of labour costs. I also got my handlebar cut within 30 minutes afterward. Overall, great place to go for parts and I would highly recommend them. read more
