We stopped by Batch on a Saturday afternoon, in part because we had a friend in from out of town who is a big whiskey drinker. They had picked out Batch to visit. My husband and I enjoy whiskey, so we decided to give it a shot. The good stuff first: they have an extremely extensive whiskey menu, including some of our Irish favorites (Redbreast and Teeling). Although I often enjoy whiskeys neat or on the rocks, I was in the mood for an Old Fashioned. I had the OH Old Fashioned and enjoyed it. The patio is right on Congress and was a fun spot to sit and people watch. The not as fabulous points: all available seating was uncomfortable. There were steel high top chairs with no cushions inside and slightly lower versions of the same uncomfortable chairs outside on the patio. Even if everything else had been off the chain, my husband and I couldn't have possibly sat there for more than one round of drinks. The bartenders/servers were the biggest disappointment. When I come to a place like Batch, I expect to servers/bartenders to be interested in talking about whiskey. At the very least, it would be helpful to get some recommendations/guidance. When we asked our server for recommendations (both on the cocktail side and for a flight of whiskeys) he shrugged at us and said, "Everything's good." Thanks man--super helpful. Even once drinks were ordered, service was slow, even though the place was not super busy. Aside from not having any recommendations and not wanting to talk about whiskey, servers were the level of friendly that I would come to expect from a big city (LA, NY, Chicago) and not Tucson. We did not order any of the food, as we weren't hungry and it seems mostly like a gimmick. If there is a particular whiskey you can't find anywhere else, this may be a good place to visit. Starting with Coy Hill which I been dying to try then their barrel pick Old forester. Couldn't be more impressed with his whiskey knowledge. Finished up with a bourbon paper plane that was amazing. I arrived at this place by accident, yet asked what they were all about before finding where I should have been....whiskey and donuts, really? So a couple of hours later I returned and after narrowing down a bourbon whiskey High West that I once tried in Park City Utah....where I was told it would have been best with dark chocolate....I tried a donut stuffed with Nutella and sugar on top that was fired away as a crime brûlée! This was a good accident stepping into this place as I enjoy new things. Bartender was informative, patient, and provided good service. This was my third time visiting Batch, though my first time for something other than their spectacular donuts. We (a party of three) sat outside with our dog for a quick drink and a sweet bite. We were greeted quickly by a friendly member of the waitstaff who brought, in-prompted, a bowl of water for our pup and a carafe for the humans. After a few moments of looking over their immense menu of spirits we decided on a pour of an unknown (Deveron 12-which is quite delicious for those who like sweeter and cleaner scotches) and the Ardbeg Wee Beastie (another delicious tipple, but radically different from the Deveron) they were delivered promptly in glencairns and were delicious. We paid shortly thereafter (about $20 before tip) and left. The entire time we were on the patio the staff was attentive and friendly, other patrons and passers-by all seemed to have nothing but positive reflections of their experiences at Batch as well. Overall a great place for locals and tourists alike to relax and enjoy a nice drink in a low-key and casual environment. read more

For some reason, every time I'm on Congress, I end up at the batch. Why? I don't know why? Maybe because I just got done at Independent Distillery, and I've just had enough to make my way down to the Batch. I have yet, to go there under their new lay out. It's a dark setting you can get coffee and donuts and booze. I usually end up here getting a beer or shot or even a coffee at the end of the night. The place is perplexing, and I think that is part of its charm. I'll end my night here with some booze and coffee and come back for brunch to repeat booze and coffee. I liked the lamps that they had hanging from the ceiling. They were bottles nicely complimenting the aesthetics of the place which is brick and wood and booze. I still don't get this place, but I guess myself after a couple of drinks understands it more, and then a couple more in, I start to understand more that this place holds a special charm and spot on Congress. Eh, Batch is merely just OK. It can be much better, I think, and I'm not entirely sure why it's not. Their donut idea is fun and exciting, with some interesting concoctions, but the cake part is always dry and just not very appetizing. They're often yesterday's donuts leftover (as admitted to me by an employee once). If you want your product to be desirable, please don't try to pawn off the leftovers. Even hours old donuts get to be a weird consistency and stale tasting. So keep it fresh or nix the idea. Their sandwiches are also interesting flavors, but again, not always executed the best. They're also pretty skimpy, but I suppose they're priced kinda reasonably so that makes up for it a bit. I like their egg sandwiches. Their egg salad is also very tasty. The bread on all was a little dry. And they once ran out of their homemade chips, so I got to pay for a bag of Ruffles dumped on a plate without being told that was the case prior to ordering. Their boozy cereal is a gimmick and not worth it. You get like maybe one shot (personally it tastes like less) in a bunch of cheap cereal for a small fortune. Don't bother. The space itself is small and cozy, and could be really neat, but having to share tables with strangers is weird. The employees have no personality whatsoever. This is our favorite whiskey bar in Tucson. They have a very deep list of whiskeys, Scotches, bourbons, etc. And a much bigger selection than just about anywhere else in Tucson. They also host regular tasting events(we first went for a Game of Thrones whiskey tasting) with various types of special/rare products and have a rotating selection of new barrels that the owner has handpicked at various distilleries. Best grilled cheese I've ever had- we came here on a friend's recommendation, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the monthly sandwich: Elote with jalapeño chips, my husband ordered the Billie June with regular chips. Batch. Holy moly. It happened, again. I am in a sugar infused drunken state, and handing out stars like a marathon spectator hands out water (I've seen it on TV, like I'd ever participate or even watch a marathon, ha). So, 5 stars. I mean, how can a donut be less than five stars. Have I ever told you the story about the worst donut I have ever had?? Well, It was delicious. If you follow my yelps then you clearly know of the Kon Tiki incident of 2016. You also know very well that I prefer my calories in solid form over liquid form. Well, my monstrous hunger for donuts, and the fact that my Sunday OEA (over eaters anonymous) meeting was being held at the TCC (we need a large meeting room ), it made perfect sense for today to be my first visit to this new oddly paired concept. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, loved it so much; but, I would recommend a name change. Maybe call it Diabetes, or Gastric Bi-Pass. I mean, I'm going to have one and need one after all the donuts I plan on eating here over the next decade! But, what the heck do I know, I'm just a fat kid who loves donuts. So I came at a perfect time, it wasn't crazy busy or empty, so I knew I could get my fix quickly. I sloth my way to the ordering counter and passionately order what seems to be a specialty of theirs, the bacon bourbon donut. Obviously I paired it with 11 of its siblings, a variety of what seem to be a General Mills sponsored line up. Fruity Pebbles, Coco Crispies, and all the other usual suspects I remember and love from my childhood breakfasts (yeah, mom loved me). Frantically trying to make the final decisions on my order, I ordered what I thought was oddly labeled as a Boozy Cereal. My plan was to eat a donut, or four, at Batch, and figured why not a quick bowl of fruity pebbles as well. I would then take the other 8 donuts I purchased home for for consumption over the next week, and by week I mean they'll be gone by midnight. So the donuts went down smooth in 2 minutes, and then it was fruity pebbles time. I let them soak for the couple minutes because there is nothing better than soggy cereal thus sugar infused milk. And there it was again, the fermentation I had experienced at Kon Tiki. But alas, it couldn't happen twice, no way, just no way. So I chomped away, using the two spoon double fisting method enabling me to literally shovel it inside my cheeks. Upon completion I used a boba straw (yes, I carry my own boba straw for those "darn I wish I had a big straw" moments that life tosses at you) to devour the milk, which was now as sweet and colorful as the guy who played Sulu (seriously, I fricken love Star Trek). As I stood up, grabbed my box of "later tonight" donuts, and made my way to the street, it suddenly hit me... That cereal must have had Lunchbox in it. I was drunk. I knew that I needed an hour to sober up before I could drive away and head home, so I walked across the street to grab a water at a place conveniently named H2O (stay tuned for that review)..... Finally, 90 minutes after my cereal, I got in my car and made my way home. The only regret I have stemming from Batch is I didn't bring home an extra dozen, for a rainy day. And, by rainy day I meant later tonight after I finish the 8 that I had already taken home. Five stars. PS - rumor going around that some Jamie guys wants me to write for their page. I was a huge fan of Unplugged and very disappointed to see it go, but I was hoping the "passing of the baton" between the previous owners discussed on local news outlets would have passed my love for it as well. And it didn't. Pros: 1) If you're a whiskey lover, they have a huge selection. I'm not a well-versed connoisseur of whiskey so I can't gauge the price. But on the whiskey I'm used to, the price range was a bit high. 2) The service is great. Our server was amicable and very knowledgeable! 3) The atmosphere is awesome. It's the same as Unplugged was set up and I'm still a fan. I just wish there were more seating for parties greater than 2 people. Cons: 1) The donuts are simply not good. The Banana Foster creme filled donut was alright, however, all of the "hole" donuts were awful. They were amazingly hard to cut through, extremely dense, and reminded me of a scone that needs to be paired with coffee or tea to cut that dryness. I was so pumped to have a speciality "donut bar" in Tucson and I won't be eating them again. Uncertainties: 1) They do have a non-donut menu I was interested in, as the ingredients sounded great, but did not try it. Summary: If I go back, I'll give the regular menu a shot and see if that can raise my review. However, so far? I came in around noon so as much as I love a good Japanese whisky I opted to just get a iced tea. The sandwich itself was pretty decent, the bread itself was good and the combination melted cheese, balanced with sauerkraut was also good. The donuts were somewhat of a disappointment. Tiny place downtown. It was my actual destination place this morning. So, Batch offers grilled cheese and donuts along with a few starters, cereal, and other dessert options, and a bit 'o whisky. When asking for a recommendation from the owner he rattles off nearly everything on the menu. Fantastic! I have my selection narrowed down to one of everything which doesn't seem like too bad of an idea here. There is a selection of 12 different donuts to choose from, none of which you'll find in a typical bakery donut case. This is a good thing! Humans have struggled to survive far too long without bacon on their Bavarian cream. I'm not sure how we weren't extinct long, long ago. I'm also not sure how scientific this is but it seems very logical, and of course I'm trying to not be biased. So, I saw settled on a grilled cheese sandwich to eat after I ate my PB&J doughnut. It was a very nice grilled cheese sandwich! It was served with a generous portion of potato chips. I wish I had taken the earlier recommendation of trying 4 or 5 styles. Of course I'm going to take a doughnut home to share with my family (one more person); I'm just that nice. That means, of course, I ended up with another dozen donuts. This is America!
