They did not mention that my town has a tree warden, that one needs a permit to remove trees larger than 8" in diameter, that there are stiff penalties for not complying. I only found out by accident and when I asked them about it they were flippant - "yeah the homeowner needs to do that..." like it never occurred to them to let me know. I have never experienced a contractor/tradesman not letting me know about needing a permit, rolling it into the cost and just doing the work. The penalties could have been in the thousands. Their arborist always seemed like he would rather be elsewhere. Never took ownership of the work. Never supervised the guys who actually came out to do the work. Didn't follow up unless I called him. Just checked out.

He showed up for one day of work, during which his machine broke down, and he completed only about 25% of the removal job(have not started on stump grinding yet). He then pressured my elderly parents, who are both in their eighties and suffer from Alzheimer's, into paying him $2,000. They are not in a condition to handle high-pressure situations, and I was not present at the time. Given that $2,000 significantly exceeded the value of the work completed, the contractor happily chose not to return and instead began making a series of excuses. At one point, he offered to refund $1,000, but when I tried to collect the refund, he changed his story again saying he will come back to finish but stopped responding to me. It appears he does not keep his words, lie consistently, and is willing to take advantage of vulnerable people whenever the opportunity arises.
