The updated ambiance feels much more modern, with a sleek, upscale vibe, and I really appreciate how they've made the bar a focal point - it's the perfect spot to start the evening with a drink. I always liked the idea of an open kitchen, but the way they've used glass to separate the kitchen from the dining area is brilliant. You still get to enjoy the excitement of watching the chefs cook without any of the extra noise disrupting your meal. It's such a thoughtful touch! The food was outstanding as always. I ordered the dry-aged steak, which was cooked to perfection. I can't wait to return once they get their wood-fire stove installed. Took my kids here for the first time as a family night out. Wanted an enjoyable experience as I've eaten here many times without them. Food was great as usual, came quickly and loved our server. Was super attentive However, I want to complain about how the whole time we were there it felt like they were pushing us out. I understand it was busy, and we had to wait as well (of course, it's a weekend night) for our table...but the amount of times the bussers came to our table to clean it off or offer boxes was insane. At one point the male busser assigned to our table came at least 3 times in a span of 10 min to ask to clear plates with FOOD STILL ON THEM. The woman busser came over when we had all of our food still there and clearly eating asking if we wanted boxes. I said, "no thanks we're still eating." She came right back with multiple boxes and put them on the table and walked away. Even the busser wiped our table down after clearing plates when we were done. To be prepared for the next guest. As someone who had worked in the restaurant industry for over 15 years and most high end places, this put a bad taste in my mouth. Having the feeling that you have to rush at a place like this and can't enjoy your time infuriates me. I will never come back here again on a busy night. Teach your service staff to read the tables, understand where they are in the meal process so they know how many times to touch the table. What an amazing first dining experience at Basta! Everything from the food to the atmosphere to the service was fantastic! Our server Josh was so attentive and gave very helpful guidance and recommendations since it was our first time. Basta is having an identity crisis. We love the food, it's amazing. We've been here multiple times and had a great experience. But tonight... we sat inside to speakers blasting club music at a level so loud I couldn't hear myself think, let alone talk to my table. We politely asked to move outside and expressed that it was way too loud, for us, inside, and that we weren't really coming here for the rave vibe. Where we sat outside, the speakers were just as loud, blasting EDM. Is this really how you want to experience your nice Italian dinner? Several tables complained to them about the same thing, that it was so loud they couldn't even talk. They had to ask several times and it wasn't until I leaned over to second their complaint that the music finally came down in level (still club music, mind you). It was so stressful and uncomfortable I couldn't get out of there fast enough. No literally, we tried, everything took FOREVER. Had to get up and ask bus boys for parmesan when it never came to the table, had to get up several times to ask for other things that never came. All we wanted to do was leave, it was such an annoying experience, and we were there trying to enjoy a nice dinner for a special occassion, I honestly don't think I'll ever go back to this location. We went to Honeycup to get our dessert instead and the vibe in there was amazing. Soft italian music, candlelight, I was like, dang I wish we'd eaten here instead. Fabulous food and great service. We went for lunch and ordered several items to share. Romano Cacio e Pepe was one of the best "caesar salads" I have eaten. Focaccia caprese was delicious. The New York Steak was prepared perfectly and was tender and tasty. I love french fries and the ones the steak came with were the best. Pappardelle was my least favorite but I am not a meatball lover. For dessert we ordered a butterscotch pudding and a tiramisu and both were unbelievable. I'm a huge fan of basta and this location offers a more spacious restaurant feel compared to their agoura hills location. Parking is on the main road shared with tarantula hill so on busy nights I can see it being a problem if you don't like walking. The service is friendly enough but comes across more business than family friendly compared to the other location. The pasta and pizza offerings are tasty and still leave me appreciating a good recipe! Whether it's date night, bday celebration, or family outing you won't find the food to be lacking! read more

This was our first time trying out this location after having nothing but great experiences at Basta in Agoura. We started with the Hamachi appetizer which was vibrant, fresh and flavorful. The fish was so tender and basically melted in my mouth. It paired well with the Vermentino we chose. Next up was the Vodka pizza. I'm a huge fan of the vodka sauce as it has the perfect balance of spicy and creamy flavor. The crust was perfectly fluffy, with a little chewiness and nice crust. We also ordered the Fiorentine which was juicy and delicious with an amazing wood-fired crust. Our server did an amazing job carving the steak table side and was overall very friendly. I first discovered Basta in Agoura Hills last year after some friends introduced me to it, so when I heard they were opening a location in Thousand Oaks, I was really excited. I've been a few times since they opened, and while the food is just as incredible as I remember, the overall experience has been mixed. Parking is a bit of a headache. Since the restaurant is on a busy boulevard surrounded by other restaurants, bars, and businesses and located on the first floor of an apartment building, finding a spot can be tedious unless you go during non-peak hours. They do offer valet, which is a good option if you don't want to spend time circling for parking. The food itself is fantastic. I have tried a few different pastas, and every one of them has been excellent. The Wagyu Steak Tartare is a must-try. It is incredibly flavorful and well-prepared. They also have a small deli-style counter near the entrance where you can get meats and cheeses, and everything I have tried from there has been great. The quality of ingredients and attention to detail in the dishes are what make this place stand out. The interior is beautiful, but the U-shaped booths in the back are way too small. I have now been seated in them twice, and both times, it felt cramped, even with just two people. Moving forward, I will avoid them at all costs. Service has been the biggest issue so far. The first time I went, it was around 7 p.m., and while the restaurant was busy, it was not packed. We were able to walk in and get a table, but throughout the meal, we found ourselves constantly looking around, trying to get our waiter's attention. They would disappear for long stretches, and even though we were enjoying the food, it definitely slowed things down more than necessary. On my most recent visit, we arrived right when they opened and were one of the first parties seated in the back. We waited 20 minutes before anyone even took our drink order. Meanwhile, people who were seated after us had already received drinks and even their food. At first, we were just catching up, so we were not paying too much attention, but at some point, it became obvious that something was wrong. I ended up flagging down another waiter to take our drink order, and shortly after, our assigned waiter rushed over to apologize profusely. While I appreciated the apology, it did not change the fact that we had been sitting there waiting with no service for 20 minutes, which is completely unacceptable, especially at the beginning of a shift. The quality of the food, the ambiance, and the friendliness of the staff make me want to come back, but based on my experiences so far, the service has been well below what it should be. The wait times have felt excessive, even when the restaurant was not particularly busy. I am hoping this is just a case of early growing pains and that they will get the operational side of things figured out. If I had a few hours to spare and wanted a relaxed meal while catching up with someone, I would have no hesitation coming here. However, if I were looking for a quicker dining experience, I would definitely think twice before choosing this location. I will be back because the food is worth it, but I hope to see improvements in service on my next visit. read more

New Basta location in Thousand Oaks is a solid 4.5 stars but rounding them up to 5 stars. I love the interior and design here, friendly staff, strong cocktails and delicious food. What's not to love? I was already a fan of the Basta Agoura location but was even more excited to learn that a second location closer to home would be popping up. Initially I came for their grand opening night and was happy to sample some of their small bites and to chat with the owner. We had such a good experience I was eager to get back here. Thankfully I have girlfriends who are always down to have foodie adventures so we came last weekend and had a great experience. The staff and service here is truly grand. Everyone is so nice, accommodating, friendly and welcoming. Our hostess was kind and let us pick our table and was even more understanding when the sun started to get in our eyes to allow us to pick another table. Our waiter was fun and lively, creating a nice environment for a girls night. I would say service was attentive and well paced. The owner always seems to be here and he's just a lovely guy. Always friendly and eager to hear about your experience, you can tell customer service here is big. I really dig their cocktail menu here. It's a best kept secret for now. Their cocktails can definitely compete with some of my favorite bars. I started with a berry whiskey sour and it was to die for. I am a whiskey girl but also love sweet cocktails - the way that they were able to craft a cocktail that mirrored both flavor profiles so well was awesome. I ended the night with their Basta Margarita and this is another must have. Love the aperol and the rim was perfectly salted. I'd honestly come back here just for some cocktails at the bar because 5/5 for sure in the cocktail department. For mains my entire table went with a different variety of pastas. I opted for something simple but mighty, the tagliatelle pasta with meatballs. Out of the three of us my dish unfortunately scored the lowest. The issue was my pasta was a bit undercooked. I had everyone at my table try it and they all agreed. I was encouraged to send it back and I know if I would have they would have handled it right BUT there is no worse feeling then sending a dish back while everyone eats without you or your table feels stuck waiting for your food. I wanted to avoid all of that so I kept the dish. It was edible but just not preferred. Had the pasta been cooked correctly it would have been a 5/5. As it was before me, like a 3.75/5. The sauce was simple and delicious. And the meatballs outstanding. Despite my dish not being perfect I could taste the potential and it was still enjoyable. My friends both really liked their dishes so I think the pasta will always be a good choice. Next time I'll try something else but happy to see they have a good amount of options. Overall Basta is the perfect restaurant for this space. It's elevated Italian dining but still has that soulful rustic charm. It's a feel good vibe here. Casual enough for a friends and family outing, but definitely nice enough for a celebration or date night. They've done a good job with their second location and I'm happy to come back soon because this cocktails are killer and there were some tasty appetizers calling my name for next time. read more
