It is not often I get treated to a meal and when I do, it is nothing of this quality. First for me it's unassuming exterior relaxes you prior to the upcoming culinary extravaganza. It is warm and cozy inside, more like your grandmothers house prior to a celebration. The staff is kind considerate and professional always close by but never overbearing. The meals are served family style and in courses who lends itself to creating amazing memories. My kids, never fans of tomato soup, loved this garlic infused offering. Next came beans, a spaghetti appetizer and a fabulously tossed salad. There was none left by the time the main course reached us leaving us ready for the Piece De Resistance. The green beans were tasty and the potatoes a definite hit however the steaks were out of this world. My son got lamb with was flavorful, tender and a large portion. My daughter the filet which was rich, perfectly cooked and a meal unto itself. Her boyfriend, the pre birthday boy had the ribeye that transported him to another plane of epicurean joy. I had the big daddy porterhouse so I could get the best of both worlds of New York and Ribeye. I still can't decide which was better so WHEN not if I come back I will get it again. Don't leave before the ice cream which was greedily devoured by all of us. I highly recommend this gastric gem to all whether it's a romantic dinner or family celebration. read more

We called for a reservation and got one within 30 min for a party of 4 on a Saturday night. This place was PACKED and super busy but we only had to wait a few min before our table was ready. This is a family style restaurant where you order and wntree and then they bring out soup, salad, bread, beans, potatoes and pasta for everyone to share. The noodles were probably the fav. We had chicken which was a little dry but it came with rice which was good. The ribeye was delish. It also comes with ice cream which was just perfect. The service was good except for a minor mixup when they didn't charge us correctly (they took the cash but also charged the card in full but we were a party of 4 spitting the check). That was cleared up pretty quickly tho. Drinks were good but I wish they had more variety. We will def be back at some point when we visit friends again in that area! read more

We came here on Saturday night and were packed for sure. This place has been surprisingly survive for 25 years and it's still original layout since they opened. Food is likely too much to handle so better came hungry. Came here for their tapas menu with friends and had a great time. We got the olives, stuffed mushrooms, chicken strips, fried ravioli, bread and sampler plate with shrimp, beef, & pork. Everything was amazing! I would get everything again. My favorite was the shrimp! I want to get a full plate of shrimp next time. We also split a pitcher of the sangria and enjoyed it. This is genuinely the worst restaurant I've ever had in Chico. The house sides: the pasta was the best of the worst of the sides but was noodles drowned in butter so...... the green beans obviously canned and SO salty, the beans were canned baked beans with Italian sausage added?, the salad tasted like how subway smells, the soup was Campbell tomato with garlic chucks and so salty I could hardly eat, and the potatoes were plain boiled red potatoes... I felt like I was in a wormhole cause the restaurant was PACKED busy but the food was literally butt. Will never be back nor recommend. read more

Simply the best restaurant in Chico! From the time that you walk into restaurant you can head into the bar where they mix the best cocktails. When your table is ready, your server will seat you and the feast begins. Everything on the menu is top quality, and then cooked perfectly but I prefer the steaks. The owner personally buys their beef and then let's it hang for about a month until it's just right, super tender and tasty. After dinner comes incredible desserts if you still have room. I've been at this restaurant just a couple of times. This restaurant, for me, is rather on the pricey side. That's the reason why I'm not dining here that much. I usually only come here during the holidays as that's when all the family is together and we can all chip in to have an exquisite, elegant dinner outside the home. The inside of the restaurant is very comforting and I immediately feel relaxed upon entering. The lights are dimmed and there's adequate space between the tables so you don't feel suffocated. Only once did I have a problem with the server my family got. The other times everything was A okay. Efficient waiters make sure to tend to you and fulfill your dining requests. The food, in spite of the price, is normally excellent, the tomato soup is a great starter, then you get plenty of other dishes such as: green beans, pasta, potatoes, salad, bread too, before the main course you order. You'll leave feeling full and the best part is taking home any leftovers to snack on later. Please do come eat here if you have the opportunity to. You won't leave feeling hungry and disappointed. I was really excited to try this place but unfortunately was super disappointed by the food, which is not cheap due to their courses style. To be clear, the restaurant itself was fine and the service was excellent. I'm not sure if it was just an off day for the chef since it has so many good reviews or if it's just not my taste. Course 1: garlic tomato soup: I love garlic and I love tomato soups, but both me and my date found this inedible. I thought maybe would be better with bread, it wasn't. Course 2: salad, fava beans and angel hair pasta with (I think) garlic oil on it: salad dressing wasn't great, but this is probably what I ate the most of. Beans were fine, but I don't usually just eat beans by itself. The pasta was overcooked and since it was just in a light oil had no flavor. Main course: we both got chicken piccata, the chicken was overcooked (better over than under at least) but had decent flavor. This course comes with red potato's and green beans- which I didn't try after the first couple courses. Complimentary vanilla ice cream- small portion, good ice cream, this was the highlight of the meal for sure. Overall I'm not sure I would go back to try again, but would like to reiterate the service and atmosphere was excellent and with as many good reviews as they have, it could've just been an "off" night. read more

I Went there the day of my civil wedding with my husband, our kids and my parents, we ordered and I honestly was disappointed because there were small insects on some of the plates, a hair in my food I told the waitress and he literally said what would you like me to do. Many of the reviews refer to this traditional Basque-style dining as a "steak restaurant"! While they do have a great selection of steaks, this so much more than that. I'll get to the food. What I want to talk about is the amazing service. The owner happily greeted us and despite wearing a Covid mask, you could see her eyes smiling. We had a reservation and were quickly seated in the main dining room. A Wednesday night, the place was bustling. Many families and larger groups - we were just a twosome. Our server, Tracy, was quickly at the table. She was hustling - as were all the other servers. All women! At least that night. They were carrying loaded plates of food and busing their own tables. They were all hustling! Tracy said she'd be with us quickly - she had hot food waiting to be delivered. We smiled and said we could wait. Our first time at Basque Norte. The prices are reasonable considering the volume of food. Like everyone else, we left with more than one container of leftovers - two be to be exact. Many tables had three or four. Yes, your eyes are bigger.... Our leftovers lasted for two more dinners. In the future, we'd likely share an entree. But we also want to try the tapas menu in the bar. The extensive menu of steaks, seafood, lamb, pork, and pasta. You couldn't possibly leave hungry. Back to our server Tracy who has worked at Basque Norte for more than 15 years. In between her sprints to get to tables and food, she shared some of the history of the restaurant and other places to dine in Chico. We also shared some of our other local and regional favorites. Her service was definitely 5-star plus! My husband ordered a 1/2-rack of ribs. The meat was moist - just falling off the bone. I had the marinated, grilled chicken breast. Enormous. It was a little dry, but the flavor was great! We really loved the Basque-style red beans - a little spice was just perfect. And the side-order of spaghettini was DELISH - just the right amount of garlic. Really had to resist eating too many of the side dishes that are included with the family dinners. Always great service. Their "special" was a T-bone steak and it truly was the best T-bone I've ever had anywhere. Cooked perfectly and just a really quality piece of meat. My wife liked her Chicken Breast dinner. We've enjoyed Basque Norte many times for over the last 35 plus years and have never had a bad meal yet. I've never been a big fan of their (what I perceive as over cooked) green beans nor their boiled potatoes (I ask for and order french fries instead) however overall Basque Norte is a really great restaurant. We love still seeing the owners Stu (usually as bartender) and Susie (usually as hostess) still working there as they both are wonderful, caring, loving and still amazingly hard working owners. I'm glad Basque Norte is open only 12 hours per week since the owners are getting older and I cherish them as no other owner of any restaurant anywhere. They have earned their quality reputations and my hat is off to both of them. If you've never experienced Basque Norte I suggest you do so soon as I can't imagine the owners working there for many more years and they truly have made this restaurant what it is. I'm not suggesting that their staff isn't great as well however for ME the husband and wife owners/team have always helped make our dining there feel special. Went there for our 59th anniversary, food was delish, service was great. I couldn't ask for anything more. The steak was so large I had three meals from it. I think the ambiance was just perfect only I was too busy eating to notice. My husband had the shrimp and it was wonderful too, he was nice enough to share. All in all a wonderful evening. They Cooked wrong steak so waitress told me she'd had them start my filet when bringing other meals. I tried to stop her to say just bring the ribeye because the rest of my table would be done when I got it. Took a couple bites, everyone was done, so took to go. Had dinner at Basque Norte last night. We arrived fairly early and were seated in an empty dining room. Shortly after we began eating, a large group of birthday party folks arrived and were seated right next to us; the dining room was still empty except for their party and me and my date. From that point on, conversation between my date and I was very challenging. The group seemed oblivious to how loud they were. Other couples arrived and were seated at the other end of the room in a semi-private setting. I didn't want to ask to be moved as were had numerous dishes on our table. On a related point, I had ordered a "medium" New York steak and received a "medium-well/well done" steak. The chef must have been having an off day. The food is fairly expensive and all we wanted was a nice quiet dinner with nice ambiance. read more

I always give this great, longtime restaurant 5 Stars because they've been around since I was a kid and the owners are so nice, even two of the waitresses have been there forever. The food menu is mostly always the same so you know what you are getting, it's the main course that you can order from which is some of the most delicious tasting meat cuts from beef, lamb and poultry. It was my wife and I's 50th wedding anniversary and what better and romantic place than Basque Norte to take her to, they even gave us a delicious slice of Ice Cream cake, compliments of the house. read more
