I got brown stewed chicken and curried goat. I cant tell which is which so my plate also included purple rice, very non sticky but sauce held them together nice. My plate included Salad and when asked for dressing I chose italien, salad was very minced and the italien dressing was really nice addition. Both meats were very nice and tender. The sauces also blended well. The brown one had a nice thick sauce that was good by itself as well. Iirc, the brown one didnt have bones. The reddish one had lots of bones from large to shards. Still tender and delicious. Super easy to separate meat from bone but shards still sneak in the mouth some times. Wish I had more rice, since I found myself having to eat some meat by itself. Also had a lot of sauce leftover. Didnt really get full from this, was hanging out with a friend so couldnt focus too much on quality of food. Rice didnt taste off, just tasted normal. I prefer salad thats less minced. Im a simple man, rice, meat and sauce and I'm happy. Wouldve been 5 star if I also got full. I believe my friend got jerk chicken and ox tail, he invited me to try his jerk chicken, was really tender and as I watched him, it looked very easy to shred with knife and fork. He chose balsamic vinegar for his salad. Thats it, idk why he got avocado and I didnt for the salad tho. Plantains, this was free, came out first, and one plate was given for the 2 of us to share. Didnt taste anything crazy, warm chewier bananas no offense. Extra She asked if I wanted to do half and half. Which was a nice option. Was brought here by my buddy Gary while we were in town for work. This is a great little Jamaican restaurant on the edge of town. Staff was super friendly and we had the place to ourselves as we were there for a very early dinner. Once we were seated they brought us a plate of fried plantains and we placed our orders. I went with the jerk chicken with rice and peas while Gary ordered the oxtail. The chicken was super tender and flavorful with a light sauce on top that had just a touch of heat. The rice and peas (aka beans) were the perfect compliment for the dish along with a small side salad. The portions were excellent for the price. Come down a yard to Sipho's Restaurant and Cafe (pronounced See-fo's) for a full island experience, from good vibes, to good food to good music. I drove past on my way home the back way from Chico on a summer Saturday and had to do a U-turn because I love those island vibes and was getting hungry. This homey spot is run by a very friendly crew that includes a Jamaican chef. You order at the counter and they bring your food out, I loved the outdoor seating but plenty available inside for when it is rainy. They have a plethora of delicious options for a hearty meal. I tried their buffet on a second Saturday when they do that and have DJ's and bands out on the porch (so fun). The curry chicken is good, but the brown stew chicken is fantastic and very deeply flavored. Fried plantains are sweet and caramelized, salads fresh and rice soft and fluffy. First off I want to say customer service mean a lot to me and in this particular situation the person who took the order seemed a little disconnected from the most important aspect of a successful business. The first time we ordered from this restaurant everything was ok with the exception of the salad included in the entree. The lettuce was withered and not appealing so on that note this time around I asked for extra plantain instead. The person taking the order acted like it was impossible to do the substitution without consulting the chef.... To make a long story short there were things we wanted and she seemed annoyed at the fact we wanted our food our way... I mean we are the customers right... Despite the unexpected of there being a truly authentic Jamaican restaurant right here in Chico CA, we are truly blessed to have Sipho's be a part of the community. I went here for dinner and ordered the curried chicken, and jerk chicken. Both were delicious, the browned chicken wasn't quite as spicy as i would have liked but flavor was great anyways. The jerk chicken was easily my favorite of the two though, the chicken was moist, had a nice smoky flavor, and the seasoning was perfect. It was spicier than i expected, but that made it better in my opinionated, and the jerk sauce was so good i had to ask for some extra on the side. All in all this was better than the Caribbean market in oroville and i will be returning soon. read more

Me and my boyfriend have had Jamaican food before but have never eaten at or found a Jamaican restaurant so we were both excited to try one for the first time at Sipho's. I ordered the Ackee and Salt Fish, which is the Jamaican national dish and included imported Ackee fruit sauteed with salted cod fish, onions, sweet peppers and tomatoes with a side of rice and peas. My boyfriend ordered the Jerk Sandwich which included signature jerk chicken shredded with lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. We also ordered a side dish called Festivals which is flour and cornmeal sweetened and deep fried. Here are the reasons why I give Sipho's 1 star: 1. It looked like it was short staffed, only 2 waitresses for both inside and outside tables, so service was very slow, inattentive, and it took a while for the food to come out. We also had to go up to the front and wait for a while to ask for the bill. 2. The Jerk Sandwich was so plain-it was just dry flavorless chicken, vegetables, mayonnaise, and thin wheat bread. A simple sandwich you could have just made at home. We both have tried Jerk sandwiches before and even made them at home and this sandwich came nothing close to what we have experienced before. 3. The Ackee and Salt Fish dish was so salty it was unbearable for both me and my boyfriend to eat it. It was like the chef dumped half a bottle of salt on it. I was really looking forward to trying this dish too. 4. I was served white rice instead of the rice and peas I had ordered. When I confronted the waitress about this, she apologized and said they had ran out of rice and peas. She failed to mention this when I had ordered it. The only good thing about the dinner tonight at Siphos was the Festivals side dish. My boyfriend was not interested in the dish but I thought it had a sweet flavor with a nice crunch. In the end, I was thankful I had coupons to use because it was a waste of money to spend on dinner at Siphos. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone and will never eat here again. read more

After a few solid visits I probably should say how much I've enjoyed Siphos. I'll get the negatives out of the way first. Location. It is pretty out of the way for me overall. I also don't enjoy the parking situation depending on how busy it might be. And finally it can be a bit hot overall inside(or a bit more stagnant on the patio) but that doesn't take much away from how good this place is. Siphos is a rare jewel for Chico, not many places you can find such amazing cuisine. I've visited Jamaica and enjoyed food first hand on the island. Siphos is the closest I've gotten to that and it's pretty dang close. We've ordered the salt fish and ackee fruit, which I was honestly a bit nervous about. I'm not a big fan of cooked fish(I'm a raw lover) and knowing it was salted made me wonder how it would be. Plus I had never had this fruit before. But the balance of salt, fish and fruit was amazing. Our go to is always the sampler and a mix of Ox tail, jerk chicken and the lamb curry. All three are so delicious. The side of rice and beans is good when I mix a little of the sauces in as well, not as big a fan by its self however. The celebration dessert is different than ones I've had in the past(here they have honey and powder sugar) but it is still delicious. I also enjoy that they give you a plate of fried plantains to start your meal off, always a fun treat. The staff is always very nice, even the cooks come out at times to say thanks and to check in on you. They always have a party once a month but we've never made it out to really comment on that. If your vegan come here to enjoy plantains served complimentary and callaloo cooked to perfection with Ital stew, white rice, salad with Italian dressing and top it off with a Red Stripe beer! I stopped by this restaurant on 3/14/15 (Pi Day) on my way home after shopping at Costco in Chico. The restaurant is located off the main thoroughfare, so this hidden gem may only be known to locals. Thank goodness for Yelp! I love spicy dishes, so I decided to check this place out. I'm an island boy myself from the Pacific, so I'm used to spicy flavors. I had the Ackee and Salt Fish (national dish according to their menu). It was good, but there was not much of the salt fish in the dish. I did enjoy the Ackee fruit and fried plantains, and the Ackee with the smidgen of salt fish was flavorful. Rice and Peas? Rather, rice and beans were not mesmerizing. The dish overall was 3 stars for me if it weren't for that rice and peas in addition to the lack of salt fish. Service was also the same, about 3 stars from the wait staff. I must give props to them though, especially the cook because it was hot in the dining room in the house. Imagine the heat in the kitchen on a hot day without the air condition running. I sat in the patio when I dined at this restaurant, and it was cooler outside than in the house. Revisit? I'm not sure, but we'll see what happens next time I'm in Chico. read more
