I recently ordered take out from Basil Leaf on a Friday night when I was craving Thai food. I ordered tom yum soup, drunken noodles, and fresh rolls. When I called the order in, they estimated it would be ready in 35 minutes. When I got there 40 minutes later, my order still was not ready. They said they were backed up by a large order. I waited at least another 30 minutes at the restaurant for my food, and the "large order" that went out didn't even look very big. When I finally got the food, I was pretty disappointed. The fresh spring rolls were 95% lettuce, and the soup was so spicy (even at a spice level 2 out of 5) that I could barely eat it. The drunken noodles were fine, but not anything special. Went there during lunch hour. Walk in and the host asks in the rudest way possible " how can I help you ?" Ummhhh.. lunch.. I reply, quite perplexed. She proceeds to sit us while maintaining the most unwelcoming expression. She wipes the table and leaves it with the sloppiest wet streaks. Disappears and doesn't bother to even offer a menu. Our flavors were good. Our service was good. The building has pretty good feel to it but it can get pretty cold in there, which isn't bad just be prepared. We ordered 3 items, I'd say the tom kha soup was the best dish. The fried rice had good flavor but the texture was off. My spring rolls were just a little flat or boring on flavor. This place could have pulled 4 stars out of me if not for the texture of the fried rice, just a bit mushy. I'd order from here again but only take out most likely. Something has clearly gone awry at this place since my last visit. Hands down worst pad Thai I've ever had and I've had plenty. It was literally a blob of goo. Hated to send back but it was so bad. This is probably one of the best places for Thai food in the south sound. That being said, every time I order something with a special request (i.e., no ice because it's freaking 50 degrees outside) they always manage to mess up/blatantly ignore my request. I asked for no bean sprouts because they upset my stomach and it looked like they added extra bean sprouts. There are a few dishes that they may want to strike from the menu. The thai bbq chicken is dry and tastes like it was rolled around in 5 spice. Pad khee mao was super sweet and soy based - I thought they accidentally brought me pad see ew. The lunch specials are actually an amazing deal at $8 a pop and each combo comes with an order of pad thai. Pretty sweet deal! Parking is pretty easy on the street and there's also a strip mall around the corner that you can probably park in. I've never had a problem finding parking, though. read more

Great food and friendly staff but horrible service. They prioritize the take out orders so if you get seated at a table you will wait for eternity for your meal to arrive. It's particularly bad in the evening. We left after waiting 45 minutes when we learned that they hadn't even started our order. We had a similar experience about two years ago when we waited for nearly 30 minutes and no one came to take our order. We left that time too. Validated. Definitely the top two Thai place / food ever. I traveled to and through every state except Maine and this is the top two Thai food I ever eaten. Pad Thai and cashew dish. Wow. Perfectly prepared, just right amount of spice and incredible consistency. Service is not bad. It is a family owned Resturant and not a five star hotel. People's expectations on service must be off the charts because these people were very friendly. I do see how other yelpers could complain about the service. I can see that if it gets busy then they might have problems but the food is worth it. Now this place is my favorite Thai in the northwest. I have travel to Texas for my other favorite Thai place. Coming from the Bay Area, I am probably spoiled by the plethora of quality Asian restaurants. Whenever I look up yelp reviews in other areas, I always find it to not match my experience as people rate them super high. We came in to a quite empty restaurant which didn't look like it offered much. Service was genial and quick. We were offered water. The pricing was also very affordable but the food didn't quite meet out expectations. Fresh roll: quite standard however I felt like the filling was mostly vercimilli so it needed more meat and shrimp. The peanut Dipping sauce was bomb though Pad thai: big portions but it was overly sweet for my taste. It's really hard to screw up pad thai so it was okay. Red curry: this is where they failed. I've had my fair share of thai food so I know what proper red curry taste like. This one... Hmm. It had an overly spicy kick yet lacking in depths of flavor. The broth had a weird overpowerin coconut milk. There was so other flavor in the curry sauce. Portion wise it was okay. Overall mediocre experience but the cheap price makes up for it. read more

Very pleasant atmosphere - good vibes, smells and decent decor for a cheap Thai place. From the list of $6.45 lunch specials, I ordered a bowl of pho noodles with tofu and vegetable broth, though chicken and beef are offered as well. Excellent texture on the rice noodles and flavorful broth (goes great with peanut sauce, bean sprouts and a bit of sriracha for a kick). I usually order my pho noodles with shrimp in most places, but granted this is a Thai restaurant not Vietnamese. Pho may not be their specialty, but I found it quite tasty! Our first experience with this place was about 10 years ago. We ordered the beef pho and were given instant pho noodles. We know our pho and after being served instant we vowed to never go back. Never lasted 10 years. We gave it another try this evening and we are never, ever going back. Fresh rolls were mostly lettuce, stir fried wide noodles tasted burnt and chicken pad Thai was really sour. I've never had sour pad Thai so I don't know if we were served yesterday's leftover. Basil Leaf has prompt and courteous service, great portions, great prices and the food is terrific! Try the avocado curry! This place is the mother of all Thai restaurants. Basil Leaf is absolutely amazing! They have the best fresh rolls and peanut sauce out of any thai place I have ever been to, which, my friends, is A LOT. The prices are very affordable, too. The ladies who work here are sweet and get the job done. Sometimes the wait can take a little while but that is probably because they are cooking the food fresh... so really there is no need to complain about that! The food is bomb. Favorite Thai food in Olympia by far... BUT the wait is ridiculous, and it's every single time. I could see maybe a couple times getting busy and having to go orders take longer but I've counted. Ten times. TEN. they have told me it would be ready in 45 minutes (that's a long wait as it is) I show up after an hour knowing they always take longer and without fail every time I wait at least an extra 20 minutes. I once waited 1 hour 39 minutes for my food. They don't have enough wait staff or cooks and although I love their food, I've stopped going here so much solely because when you order take out you don't want to wait over an hour for it. I don't eat in often so maybe that's faster, but still. I've read similar reviews, and sat next to people also waiting for extended periods of time wondering where their food was. This place is near to home for us and we love Thai food. We ate here a lot until recently and I would say it was usually average 3-star food but quite inexpensive and convenient. Our last experience unfortunately left us deciding not to go back. We ordered swimming rama and the spinach came to us burned (very obviously scorched and tasting like it). We mentioned it to the server who basically did nothing. And this was after waiting a really long time for the food and getting one of two iced coffees that was missing something as it did not taste good while the other one did. As we were checking out we mentioned this again and got a very trite 'sorry.' We paid our bill and walked out kind of stunned. We're done here and the only reason I'm giving a second star is we did get a lot of better meals in the past but this visit was bad enough for us not to risk it again. read more

We had a fantastic dinner here. Seating was prompt, and our orders taken shortly after we put down the menu. We got the fresh salad rolls and they were excellent, with an equally excellent peanut sauce. The Pad See Ew was perfect, and the Green Curry was top notch. Even the rice served with the curry was top notch. Portions were more than generous, and we both have leftovers for tomorrow. Wait...scratch that...we did until the Green Curry was too good to put down and got finished despite being over full. I am sorry to say that we will not be coming back, one of our very favorite Thai places has changed over the last month. The wait has always been a little bit but the last 3 times we were there, we waited 30 minutes for our food. Food was cold (the spring rolls that we usually LOVE were very cold like they had been sitting for a while) I go there for the Yellow Chicken Curry and it was NOT the same recipe the last couple week, it was very watery, less chicken, TONS of onions and missing the yummy yams. My husbands food was also cold...we believe they might have changed owners as we have not see the gentle man who used to run the place the last few times we have gone to eat. we are both very sad to not be going back, but 3 strikes!. read more
