This was my first time here. Seated right away, menus brought, friendly server at first....I ordered the tofu and mixed veggies with tofu lunch combo, my lunch companion ordered the red curry with chicken combo. Each dish priced at $6.95. My food was tasty and god sized portion. My friend had a fly in her curry. She discretely told the server who proceeded to her first that it was some sort of pepper? To which my friend replied"it has wings"! Then she was told that the fly flew into her curry after it was served!! My friend insisted that it had not and server then relented and brought out another portion of the red curry. When we got up to pay my friend inquired if they would give her at least her Thai tea for free ( it cost $2.50) once again the same server (owner?) became indignant and said why I cook you another curry for you? At which point we both verbalized the fact that we would never come back again. Tip you ask? Not a chance. read more

The only way to get vegetables is to ask for the Pad See-ew. If you want vegetables on other dishes, they charge you extra, brown rice costs extra as well. They use a ton of bamboo shoots to cut costs. Food is not good for the most part. The owner was very rude to me when I asked if I was in time for their lunch special as if I should know their schedule, she was also rude to me when I asked for an extra plate or bowls for soup, expecting the customers to eat out of the same dish! Customer service was horrible. I recommend going to the other Thai on the Westside by the mall, they are pricier, but you get flavor, vegetables and service. read more

Basil Leaf is by far my favorite Thai restaurant! I get the tofu yellow curry with brown rice almost every time because I've never had better from anywhere else, no matter how fancy the restaurant. Basil leaf is a small, humble, family run business that I'm all too happy to support anywhere from 3-5 times a month. (I'm really quite an addict at this point.) Very sweet people. Their vegetable tofu soup is also very good! In response to negative reviews I've seen of this soup- it is NOT pho, it is "noodle soup." To compare it to pho would be to miss out on the opportunity altogether. The owner has politely made clear the distinction for me. It is an entirely different dish, very garlicky. I eat it when I'm feeling under the weather. My roommates enjoy the tofu pad Thai and fried rice! read more

I can't say much for most of the menu, but the Pad Si Yu is AMAZING and so are the fried rolls. One of the favorite things to eat in Olympia. Service can be a bit rude but that's possibly just a cultural difference, I've never been to Asia so don't really know. They can be short and don't really want to do a lot to keep the customer satisfied, but this one dish makes it one of my top places in Olympia, and I'll probably be getting this a few times a month for the rest of my time in Olympia. read more

I was a first-time visitor to Basil Leaf and alerted my server immediately I am vegan. She said anything on the lunch menu (I was there at 2:45 p.m.) could be made "vegan." I ordered the "Swimming Rama" with tofu -- it comes with "house peanut sauce." As I started to eat -- after taking few bites -- I decided to read Basil Leaf reviews on the web. One fantastic review warned of dairy in some of the Basil Leaf dishes. What do you know?! The "house peanut sauce" is made with cow's milk! I spoke to the manager, who had no idea that vegan meant "no animal products"; in fact, he tried to convince me that "vegan" means "no meat." Ugh. Try as I might, I could not convince him (or my server) that vegans do not consume dairy, eggs, flesh, etc. After considerable back-and-forth, he removed it from the bill. I left hungry and disappointed. Be very careful, if you are a vegan, if ordering at Basil Leaf. read more

This is probably my favorite Thai restaurant in Olympia. The Red Curry and Mom's Fried Rice are my favorite meals and will always fill you up! Service is generally pretty fast but one downside is portions are sometimes small. Depends on the chef at the current time! All in all, For a cheap meal, this place is worth it. read more

All you really need to make vegetable pad thai: a hot stove and pan, tamarind, palm sugar, fish sauce, water, VEGETABLES, and an order of Basil Leaf vegetarian pad thai.... Since when is pad thai just a mess of strangely flavored rice noodles and tofu with a few sprouts on the side? I love the food here. It is fresh and always has great flavor. The problem with this restaurant is that the service is extremely slow. Consistently slow on dine in and take out orders. Last time I went there I had to wait 30 minutes for a "to go" order that I called in advanced. When I got home and opened my order I realized they gave me the wrong order. I drove back to the store to exchange my order. I had to wait another 25 minutes. I mentioned my difficulties with my order and they did not offer any type of discount or any compensation. The other thing they recently started doing is handing you the keypad when it gets to the "tip" portion on all to go orders. read more

I ordered my food to go and waited about 15mins before heading over there to pick it up. When I got there I had to wait another 15mins before it was ready. They weren't busy either which was confusing. When I got back to work I only had 10mins left to eat it and it was not very good at all. Not worth the wait. I got the pad thai but it tasted like the sauce was tomato based and was super thick and sticky. Maybe it's just me but I've never had pad thai like that before. I wasted $30 and my entire lunch break. I got two orders of it for my husband and I, so I could take it home after work for him. He agreed it wasn't very good. Then again maybe we just have never had that type of pad thai before...? Either way we did not enjoy it and it wasn't a good experience at all. My daughter and I went for dinner in Oct. (2014). She ordered spring rolls as an appetizer. They were so greasy and soggy that she only ate one. I tried one and didn't finish it. There was a puddle of grease on the plate under the spring rolls. Our other food was mediocre. Both the waitress and the owner asked about our food at which point I told them the spring rolls were really greasy. When it came time to leave, the waitress tried to talk us into taking the spring rolls, but we declined. We were still charged for them. They may have gotten that $4.95 out of me, but permanently lost me as a customer. read more

This was my second time trying this restaurant and I am very disappointed. We ordered sweet and sour pork and mixed vegetables with chicken. Neither one had hardly any chicken or pork and it was overloaded with cooked celery. The service was very, very slow. It took over 20 minutes to get our food after we ordered and we waited another 15 minutes after we finished eating to get our check. What should have taken less than an hour to eat took over an hour and a half. The sauces were predictable and the sweet and sour pork had almost no pineapple in it. After we were done eating, I looked at the description of the meal of the dish and nowhere on it was there any mention of celery. I will not be back. read more

Virtually flawless Thai food, at least in my opinion. Everyone is friendly, place is clean. Can't get enough of the rockin' soft piano ballads they play over the speakers. I am slightly addicted to Basil Leaf. For the past two years that I have lived in Olympia I have visited this establishment innumerable times. They have really delicious curry as well as fresh rolls, pad see ew, pad thai, and more. The staff has always been super friendly and sweet. The prices are really great too, for lunch entrees are around $7, and at dinner $8. The portions are huge and I almost always have a whole meal left over to eat the next day. Definitely my favorite Thai restaurant in the Olympia area. read more

I've only had the pad Thai and it's been pretty good so far. Not the best I've had, but it hits the spot. While they advertise being able to adjust spice from 1 to 5 stars, they are willing to go beyond that if you're into spicy things--at 10 stars, I noticed that they put a couple diced chilies into my dish; it managed to mostly clear my stuffy nose and got me to sweat a little, but I kind of want to push it to 12 next time, and maybe try a different dish as well. read more

Very good food, very good prices. They are consistently good and I've never been disappointed by food or service. They can get busy (particularly the Friday night of the Luminary event!), but even then the wait was still under 30 minutes once the order was placed. Very friendly staff and knowledgeable re: items like veggie dishes (veggie broth vs. chicken broth for noodle soup, etc.). Highly recommend! (PS - feel free to head to the register to pay after your meal if you don't want to wait for your ticket to be brought to you; the tickets are usually sitting up front. Also feel free to approach the register area for any to-go containers rather than waiting for staff to come to you to offer. This is our favorite West Oly lunch spot. The owners are present and very kind. The prices are on a low side for Olympia asian cuisine, yet this is the best overall Thai in town. The consistency is EXCELLENT, which I feel is one of the most important qualities in restaurants. The soups are wonderful, the salads such as the yum or larb are stand out dishes. All the curries are wonderful, as well - complex, balanced and rich. The lunch specials are a major steal, in fact I just don't know how they offer the lunch prices they do with such great quality! Overall, this is my absolute favorite asian restaurant in the area....and we dine here at least a couple times per week! read more
