Disappointing on the highest level.
This is going to be a fun one but it is extremely unfortunate. You don't typically go to a restaurant, with such high ratings, with close friends who not only recommend it but consider it their favorite restaurant, and have such a bad experience on almost every level.
We called in a reservation for 6:30 on a Saturday, at 4:30 in the afternoon. The phone number is absolutely verified. The man who took the reservation, seemed less than thrilled to take the reservation. That being the case, the following was not a surprise. We showed up at 6:30 and they had no indication of such reservation. Disappointment number one.
As Basil 1791 has a varied menu of Asian to American and a highly regarded sushi bar, that's what you're going to expect. As the sushi was highly talked up by our close friends who recommended the restaurant and joined us, all of us were looking forward to this. As we were showed to our table, it was announced that there would be no sushi available, on a Saturday night, because the Sushi chef was gone for the evening to attend a wedding. Disappointment number two. That was a big one. Considered going somewhere else but decided to power through.
For appetizers, we ordered three. The Rangoon, somewhat under stuffed and uneventful, but it was good. Salt and pepper calamari was tasty and not greasy. Surprisingly though, not a lot of salt and pepper really coming through. And no sauce to accompany it which seemed unusual and left it a bit bland. Again, good but uneventful. The spring rolls really shined. Very good and the sauce to accompany it was also very tasty.
For an entree, I ordered the Korean Sizzling Steak. I guess if I had to describe it I wouldn't call it steak and I wouldn't call it sizzling. I would call it, perhaps, Korean beef in a sweet sauce. It was sliced beef rather than what you would imagine as steak. When you order something called steak, you imagine a steak. Even if sliced it's still in the shape of an entire steak. These were thinking slices of beef cooked in a sweet sauce, with onions, served on a fajita plate that was kind of bubbling when brought out. It was explained that, due to some kind of fire code issue, they couldn't bring it out sizzling anymore. I would change the name of this all together. I also opted for the white rice with this. Fried rice, as we learned from somebody else who selected it, is a few dollars more. The white rice was awful. Dried out clumpy and old. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 5, I would have given this dish a 2. I ate it, the sauce was tasty however those are probably the only nice things I have to say about it. Disappointment number three.
When they brought the food out, they brought out four correct dishes and one incorrect dish. So our friend, who also recommended this as being one of her top favorite restaurants in the area and also the one who wanted sushi, received a plate of wrong food. It was about another 10 minutes before her plate came out. Which, as not to be rude, left the rest of us kind of waiting as well and letting our food get cold. No real explanation at the time from our server.
On another note, the drinks would tend to linger on the bar a bit long. Unfortunately, when you're sitting at a high top table next to the bar, you're only an arm's reach from staring at your drinks as they sit and warm up before you get them.
The table was split in two, in regards to the checks. I'm not one out looking for a freebie. The three of us ate our meals. Sometimes you like the food, sometimes you don't. Kind of surprised nothing was comp'd or nothing reflected that inconvenience on our friends bill. So we said something. The seemingly annoyed server said he would try to do something.
When he returned, after removing that item from their bill, he tried to explain that it was because the restaurant was busy and sometimes when the restaurant gets busy, the kitchen gets all confused and they don't know how to handle a busy restaurant. Isn't a full house the goal of a restauranteur? Our friends, who frequent this restaurant, quickly pointed out that no, this was not a busy night. From our standpoint it was probably only about 2/3 full. Poor excuse, a little bit of a poor attitude from the server and just an unfortunate experience overall.
Would I go back? After reading this, I think the answer is fairly obvious. I highly doubt we will return. If a restaurant can't keep it together when one person decides to take one night off for a vacation, and is then forced to shut down almost half of its menu (sushi), then maybe this isn't the most solid establishment to visit. I know there are a lot of great reviews and I know a lot of people likely really enjoy this restaurant. But unfortunately, at least for the sake of this review, we showed up on what is likely an unusually poor example of what this restaurant has to offer. But this is a factual review of what actually happened, exactly as it happened. read more
