We've been the last two weeks on Thursdays which is noodle night. $12.00 gets you your choice of soup, choice of noodles and choice of protein. The first week I had chicken Pad-Thai and miso soup. It was very good but I had a taste of my dining partners chicken lo-mien and wow! The next visit I had the lo-mien and it was great! Also had the egg drop soup which was delicious. Excellent, excellent, excellent. We came for an early dinner and got a spot out front (25c for 30 minutes, free after 5 PM). We sat in a very comfortable 2-person booth. Our waitress was Sheridan and she provided absolutely superb service. Major shout-out. They didn't have the beer my husband ordered so she took the initiative to return to the table with two samples of similar beer for him to try. She answered all our questions and made appropriate recommendations. We were checked on often enough, a soda refill appeared without my asking, and she neatly boxed up our leftovers. She was pleasant and kind and one of the best servers ever. Very classy decor here; subtle touches of the orient; wood, leather, and...books! And a very elegant bar. Motown music was playing, and festive but not excessive Christmas decorations were up. And yes, a fortune cat was there to greet us. Food arrived quickly. We had the Thai Dumplings app which was just enough for two to whet the appetite. It was tangy and peanutty and the cool cucumber slices a perfect contrast. My husband had the Green Mango Grouper and loved it. I had a taste and it was fantastic, fresh white fish and delectable toppings, spice level 2 was just right. I tasted it and agreed it was excellent and right then we made plans to return. I had Siam Curry with chicken. Full of flavor and wonderful vegetables especially the snow peas. Spice level 3 is described as Thai Spicy and they are not kidding. They do not wimp out on the spice here so use caution. (For example at Thai Thara in Richmond Indiana I go with 5 of 5 and I still need to add some spice.) Sheridan brought extra chili oil if needed. I would recommend erring on the side of lower spice with the option to add. We took home an order of Singapore Noodles to share for supper tomorrow along with our leftovers. WOW--what a restaurant ! Have eaten here twice, but the first visit was a while back. Our server for lunch today was Amy--friendly, informative, efficient, attentive--one of the best servers we have had in months. We started with the lettuce wraps--huge serving and only 9 bucks--almost a meal by itself. I also had hot and sour soup--at least the second best I've ever had. For an entree I chose the Spicy Garlic Stir Fry with pork which was the $10 lunch special with an egg roll.. I like having brown rice available as a no-extra-charge option. Great ambiance. Ate at Basil during a recent art festival. We were able to eat outside on a beautiful night. The service was great. The Rangoon was good. The Thai dumplings were excellent and the sauce was really good. We both had pad see ew with different spice levels. My wife's (lower spice) did not have enough sauce. Mine was better, but noodles were more like a fettuccine noodle. Overall good, but not the best version of the entree I have had. If in the area I would consider coming back as it was reasonably priced and tasty. read more

We were staying nearby in an Airbnb, and just finished visiting Marcum Park and were looking for a restaurant. Thai food sounded good so we gave it a try. Nice private booths inside, wait staff was very friendly, and good Thai food. Wait staff gave us lots of recommendations for breakfast the next morning, and we went on our way. Very disappointing food. I had never been. We ordered crab Rangoon for an appetizer, and there was barely any filling in them. The soup was decent, and there waitresses did make an effort to get us some kind of crispy noodles for it. We shared General Tso with lo mein instead of rice. The sauce was very sweet, and the chicken was swimming in it. We ordered a dinner portion, and there were 9 chunks of chicken. Didn't seem like much for a dinner portion. Decided to have a last minute dinner at Basil 1791 on a Saturday night, we were seated immediately when we got there-- great service! Our server Cara was great and super friendly. We got the crunch roll to start and it was so delicious, as well as a blueberry basil mojito and pink starburst martini- the drinks are so good!!! The weekend special when we went was a $22 red wine braised short rib with sides, and it was delicious. A thoroughly disappointing and unsanitary experience. Our waiter was inattentive--no refills, lukewarm food, and an overall chilly atmosphere. To make matters worse, a patron brought a service dog, which is perfectly legal and understandable, but what followed was deeply concerning. The manager spent an excessive amount of time petting the dog, then immediately proceeded to handle table settings--silverware, tablecloths, water glasses--without washing her hands. After the dog and its party left, she even returned for one final affectionate stroke. As cute as the dog was, hygiene and professionalism should never take a back seat in food service. This visit felt careless, unclean, and frankly unacceptable. I will not be returning--and if possible, I would give zero stars. read more

First off, my rating is in between a 3 star and 4 stars, so let's just say for now it is a 3.5. My experiences have been between meh, just ok to wow this is good! I am really bummed about this review and was hopeful to deliver a more exciting review as I have been here many times now. My biggest complaint is consistency! I cannot express my disappointment more when it comes to a great night versus an a okay night. Unfortunately, we have had more subpar experiences than great. mostly with service than food. Very few times we have had a service where that staff is friendly, minus the host. She is always friendly and welcoming! When we've had good service, it was such an enjoyable time, and we could ask questions and felt excited about the vibe. The food has been mostly good, but again consistency is a problem. My favorite thing to order is sushi and when it is good it is the best I have had around, but then I have experiences where it is not as fresh and I really dislike brown avocado, slimy fish and not to mention fish scales! We've ordered pick up a few times and my husband and I have found the food is much better eating in. Have had wrong orders, also made completely different from what I had before in the restaurant. Short story: I cringe when a place does multiple Asian styles. It usually means they do none of them great, maybe all mediocre at best. That was my expectation for Basil, but they quickly dispelled that assumption and have become our go-to Asian food haunt...including sushi and some mean cocktails. Maybe grab a drink, as on to the long story... We first dipped our toes by trying safer fare such as their Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles, which were certainly tasty and warranted a need to try more of the menu, though not the best of those dishes we've had. We have since tried more exciting dishes such as the Spicy Peanut Curry dish, which is now my fav - nice heat, flavor, and great portions. The curry and peanuts combo is just hard to beat. My wife now really enjoys the Spicy Garlic Chicken, but her absolute favorite main dish when we're splurging is the Korean Sizzling Steak, and I concur. It's almost more of a Mongolian Beef (which they also have and is solid) meets premium Asian steak dish like a Thai Crying Tiger - highly recommended. We also love some of their apps. I am not a fan of Crab Rangoons but love theirs and my wife (who loves Crab Rangoons) is addicted to them. They're more like triangle pockets vs the traditional rangoon shape, with fantastically crispy yet chewy dough and what must be a lower cream cheese ratio because I normally don't like rangoons because of too much cream cheese. The Egg Roll great too, as are the Bon Bon Shrimp (when ordering in, to-go they get a bit soggy). I like the Thai Rolls, but my wife finds them to be a bit too meaty and dense. We usually love pot stickers but theirs are strangely more European dumpling like in shape and dough - not fans. Our other love at Basil is their sushi - a total surprise! We used to live in the Pacific Northwest and had access to world-class sushi that's more focused on the fish rather than crazy assortments and sauces on fried rolls. The Cincinnati metro area is more focused on the latter, which is not our preference, but Basil has a great assortment of both including many fresh fish rolls like their Basil Special Roll, Summer Roll, and (our favorite) Rainbow Roll. Surprisingly good quality of fresh fish, though we tend to stay with the tuna focused rolls and the salmon can vary. The best part? They do half priced sushi on Wednesdays (of a limited menu)! On that note, they have specials nearly every night of the week. Another surprising aspect of Basil is their cocktails are fantastic! A huge list of affordable yet unique and well crafted cocktails, including seasonal/event-based special cocktails. I struggle to choose but often go with their Blackberry Bourbon Smash, while my wife usually gets their current variation of the Old Fashioned. They typically have a solid craft beer offering too but the servers rarely know it well and the list is not easy to find/see. But the cocktails are so good that I say save beer for somewhere else. Last but not least, the spot is cool with the book-clad walls by the booths. Definitely get a booth if you can, which sometimes requires a reservation, as the tables can be awkward. They also apparently have an event/music venue upstairs as we've heard it but have never been. Service when eating in has been really hit and miss, usually more on the latter unfortunately. That and the non-booth seating are the main reasons for the 4 stars, along with a few food misses. But hostess staff for to-go have usually been great. Phew, that was a long review! But Basil is quite the complex place with many layers. Definitely recommend, as we certainly frequent it, but keep in mind some of the nuances noted, as this is not your typical Asian restaurant. read more

My husband's volcano roll is the reason this review is getting a four star verses 5. It was just ok. Dined here recently for the first time and the only word I can really think of is mid ‍. Didn't get a drink menu when seated, and then when it did come it didn't have a list of beers. My cocktail was not that good but that's probably more of a preference issue. My table got crab rangoons and pot stickers, and both were good, but I preferred the crab rangoons a bit more. I ordered sushi and sashimi which I assumed would've been sashimi and one or two rolls, but the actual dish was a few sashimi and then just cuts of sushi, which were fine but I was really missing the flavors and textures that a roll would've provided. Atmosphere inside was mostly nice but there was a giant tv on the wall that had wrestling on for an hour, which didn't seem to fit the rest of the vibe. I'd be curious to go again and get something off the non-sushi menu, but I'd probably just get it as takeout. read more

Add a half star, definitely 4.5!!!! And we'll worth that extra half. My pad thai was a bit salty, only reason I can't give a perfect score. I brought my wife and son here and we had a really hard time choosing what to get. The menu is predominantly Asian, but some of the American style dishes also sounded amazing. We said at the beginning of the meal, if we like it we definitely have to come back and try something new next time. We got the potstickers to start, which were very good and super stuffed full of pork and goodness. I got the pad thai, which came out looking delicious in a giant portion. It was great once I added some of their thai chili oil and found the perfect spice level. It was a bit salty, however. My son got the chicken tenders and fries. They were clearly freshly battered and the fries looked freshly cut as well. Very good. My wife got the hibachi fried rice first, which came out in a gigantic portion. It was very, very good! I was a little concerned when I saw how broad the menu selections were, typically that means they make a lot of stuff but none very good. NOT TRUE HERE! I had a dragon roll, the sushi was fantastic, then we both ordered off the Thai menu, she had the drunken noodle, I had the pad thai. I went here on 11/20/2024 at 4:25pm and ordered Vietnamese Pho and Eggroll my server was a male, let's start here with my complaint, the server did not even introduce himself when he sat me down, I waited for some more water and didn't want to wait any longer I had to get up to FIND him just to get a water refill. Not one time did he stopped by my table and ask if everything was good, but he definitely did not forget to give me my check. And when I got my check the price of the pho was different on the menu than what I was billed, luckily he charge me for the the price I seen on the menu but he was definitely rude about it. I was finished eating and again, had to get up to find him to get my receipt. This use to be my favorite place, sadly not coming back. read more

The sushi rolls here are excellent! Great service and we will led to a very comfortable booth. Very much looked forward to the sushi rolls. The dragon and volcano rolls were very plentiful with the volcano rolls having some very large scallops on top. The crunch roll was awesome and very deep fried and the Phoenix roll was also good and filled with plenty of fillings. Also had some crab rangoon that was also very excellent.
