i decided to drive to tacoma from west seattle since it's a long weekend and i figured the traffic would be light. i'd seen posts for bas-que and being a lover of exceptional baked goods, basque food and cheesecake, it felt like it might be a home run in terms of tasty treats. the window was sparse when i walked up and there was no line; that's because it was shy of their 9am opening time. the sad news was that their full offerings were not yet ready so i opted to choose from what was available. i got a slice of cheesecake and a rhubarb cream scone. i had wanted to try their empanadas and their rye loaf but alas, things were still baking. in the brief conversation i had with the super sweet woman who helped me, i mentioned i had driven from west seattle and she seemed sad that i didn't have the amount of options they'd usually have available. after i paid and she handed me the bag, she mentioned she'd added in a free chocolate chip cheesecake cookie to try. i hadn't been prepared for that act of generosity and it so reminded me of the south american quechua concept of a yapa, the thing thrown in as an act of appreciation by the seller once you'd haggled for whatever you were buying. i got partially up i5 north before i could no longer resist and ripped off a chunk of the cookie. what a win! it's not too sweet and the cheesecake center is so delightfully contrasted by the chocolate. sooooooo good! moral of the story: don't overlook those cookies because other things in the window seem more unique. the cookies demand equal attention, too! i'll definitely be back. i envision making a detour off i5 when headed further south on future road trips; this small dutch door bakery is not to be passed up! read more

I also had to get their namesake, a slice of basque cheesecake, which was creamy, not too sweet, and perfectly cooked with a smooth interior. Came here because not many places make basque cheesecake. That said, I guess i didn't do enough of my homework because not only could you not sit inside and eat your cheesecake, but there was no plastic forks offered to eat it in the car. It's a very small operation where you order, pay and go. The cheesecake was not baked to a dark dark brown as I would have liked it but it was very good. Very creamy! read more

We saw the sign to this place a week ago and looked them up online. Today we decided to try it. We made a great decision! We tried the garlic roll, empanada and sausage roll. The sourdough around the rolls were amazing!! The empanada was just as flavorful as the ones I had in Puerto Rico. We also tried the brown sugar maple scone. It was fantastic, crumbly in the good way, and the flavor was the perfect amount of sweetness. We got a piece of the cheesecake, but are waiting until after dinner to enjoy it. We asked for the cheesecake chocolate chip cookie, but they were sold out, however the owner had a mistake that he gave our group to try, hands down the best cookie ever, it tasted like brown butter and creamy all in one. We will definitely be going back. Make sure to check them out!! They are only open until 2 and closed Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. Definitely worth checking out!!! read more

Oh my gosh! This little walk up bakery counter in Tacoma is amazing. I would have driven by had it not not been for the fact that I had previously looked up Tacoma bakeries. So I recognize the name when I saw it. There was line out front, which is what got my attention in the first place. So I turned around and managed to find a place to park. I ordered the Pork and Asparagus Empanada and the Cream Bun with Pistachio Nuts. As I went home, I figured the empanada was probably more dough than filling because they usually are and I've never seen one that big. Wow! Was I wrong! I wish I had taken a picture of what I bought, but after the first bite, I couldn't stop eating it was that good. It was packed with meat, so moist, tender and delicious. And the crust was so flaky and buttery. Then the cream bun which was amazing just like the first one I had in Sicily. So sweet and delicious the soft bun with the perfect amount of sweetener in the cream filling. YUMMY! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BAKERY. It's only problem is the color matches the brewery next-door. It blends in which is why you don't see it as you speed by. They might want to change their colors to more red less black and add a pop of yellow so they stand up from the place next-door. read more

I am so thrilled that this incredible bakery is now in Tacoma! My boyfriend and I stopped by when we were in the area after puppy preschool. It's a little window that takes orders. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We ordered a hojicoco, cookie bar, pan de sal, cheese/olive/ham wheel, and of course, their signature basque cheesecake. All of their baked goods were delicious! The cheese/olive/ham wheel was my personal favorite. I liked the contrast of crunchy/soft textures and enjoyed the flavors. The pan de sal had a nice crust and was perfectly salted. The cookie bar had a shortbread texture and I liked that it was not too sweet. The basque cheesecake was exceptional, as one would expect! It had a nice caramelized flavor and was not too sweet. The texture was very smooth and custard-like. The hojicoco tasted like a regular hot chocolate because unfortunately the hojicha flavor didn't come through. I would definitely order any of these baked goods again, but their Instagram page has me drooling and I can't wait to try their other creations. I highly recommend trying this bakery and I'm already looking forward to our next visit. read more

We dug into the pan sal and cheesecake once we got back to our truck. 15 min later we were back to purchase another pan sal; sadly they were sold out. We decided on the brown butter brioche loaf as an alternative. The woman kindly gave us a complimentary bread pudding, which we devoured once we got home; delicious of course! The location is next to the Berliner restaurant and it's a walk up only, there is street parking. Some hot drinks and they have specialty drinks. Always on the hunt for new bakeries and we were pleasantly surprised to find this new place downtown. We devoured the maple scone and slice of cheesecake. SO SO YUMMY. We got a Jamón y Queso, Hojicoco cookie, Pan y Sal, and the Basque Cheesecake slice. The Jamón y Queso is probably one of the best savory pastries I've ever had.
