I am a good person I have never in my life written a bad review so I applied for these properties on 2806 Charleston Ln, San Pablo CA I went to see the properties The lady said only one other person applied. Me, and that they have two units available I went in to do the application, at 3088 Pinole Valley Road Pinole, CA 94564 I also wrote a letter to explain my situation. And provided them a voucher I was told they should be getting in contact with me in two weeks, or probably sooner I didn't get a call or email coming into the third- week so on 3/2/2026 at 9:23am I called. The lady told me that they rented one of the units and then she told me that another unit was still available and asked if I have a updated voucher. I then told her that I can't get an updated one because I have to put in a 30-day notice at my current place to get my updated one. But I am approved for a 3bed room do to my extended family. Remind you all of this is what I said in the letter when submitting my application She then tells me that's not true I know people that has there's basically telling me that I am a liar. I was very offended so she asked me again. Can I get an updated voucher today I then said I can try to go get something stating that I have a three-bedroom voucher so I went to the housing office, called her back at 11:13am the secretary picked up and said didn't you just talk to her. We already have two people in both of the units. I then told her that's not what she said. She then transferred me back to the lady I then put the Housing Authority on the phone. She talked with them and everything that she told the housing lady wasn't what she told me. She then proceeded and said we would have to wait for inspections an etc. but what I didn't understand was why she didn't tell me that why did she ask me to go get an updated voucher instead of saying you didn't get the place? After I went 45 minutes away to the housing place and waited in a long line and had to wait to talk with someone She didn't even apologize for calling me a liar after they told her the something I told her if you already know dealing with people with section 8 vouchers requires exceptions why let them apply these rental properties Been up for 84 days already and you're talking about waiting on inspection I was discriminated against. I didn't get a fair chance. This is unacceptable. I feel like I was racially profiled. The moment she got my application. I should have at least gotten a call asking for whatever she needed, and I would have worked on it, but no instead they took my application fee, which I was told that I was going to get back and didn't I'm not mad that I didn't get it I'm upset about the unprofessionalism and discrimination and the disrespect people love to abuse their power I wouldn't recommend anyone to this agency unprofessional and unfair treatment bad communication this is not how you should represent your company the world we live in is so sad I encourage people to know your rights and look up the laws are connecte attorneys read more

If you are looking for a quick turn around to figure out if you are approved then do not choose Bartels. They make you wait 10 days for an answer. Not only that but one of the women in the office insisted that I didn't make enough when I bring in about 8 grand a month, I ask that she double check her math and she again told me I did not make enough, she then called her supervisor to ask about how she should calculate my income and it was determined she was making a mistake so she began to apologize. From the very beginning they act like they don't want you to be approved, hater vibes. Bartels Property Management family and staff took excellent care of my property .. a house rental .. for over 20 years. One renter remained in the house throughout those 20 years and whenever it became a bit problematical in one way or another, I always understood that Bartels were completely on top of it. It wasn't always convenient and easy for them since I live outside of the United States, but we were able to communicate concerns back and forth online or by telephone. This included a major repair to the back walls which they contracted and supervised and of which they kept me fully informed, including on-line photos of the work. My mind at rest! Lynette Bartels was easy to contact and meet with whenever we were in the US....supportive, informative and quick to resolve our concerns and answer our questions. When we decided to sell the property last year it was an easy transfer to initiate that process thru Renee and the sale went smoothly. I went to turn in an application on a Friday. I was interested in 3 properties. They told me 2 of them were already rented. That afternoon, I'm on craigslist and they've posted the same 3 properties THAT SAME DAY on craigslist. I look at their website and it indeed says 2 of the 3 properties are pending lease, but then why would they list them on craigslist that same day? A week later, they've posted one of the pending apartments on craigslist again. I can't say I have a lot of experience dealing with this property management company, but it seems to me they are running a scam to cash in on that $35 application fee. There's even a disclaimer on the application that says something along the lines of "your application has a marginal chance of being looked at." If it ends up working out and I get an apartment through Bartels, I will write an update. But they don't seem very trustworthy, imo. read more

First we had to drive by the house, then make an appointment to see the house, finally go to their office to turn in the application with all of our documentation. To only find out that that the "pet friendly" listing would only allow one 15 pound pet. We have two small dogs so they turned us away. Probably the worst experience. The ladies working there are rude, lack customer service and knowledge. They are not thorough with the process. People are serious inquiring on properties. We applied for a location, provided all the required documentation within a day if viewing the property. She reviewed our application and said "it should not take too long you guys qualify, we just need to run the credit" mind you, both my husband and myself have good credit. I received a notification via my credit monitor app that they ran my credit that same day. days passed my husband called in and they said it would take 10 business days because they had 8 other applicants? Days later.. We receive a call that our application was "declined" then she switched her wording and said the landlord did not "choose" our application. So we met all requirements we were just not "chosen". How are they running numerous credits, charging application fees and not informing clients there could potentially be several people applying after you, and maybe one of them will get chosen over your application. Very disappointing that there are qualifying applicants but it's not first come first serve basis. Highly unfair and disappointing. Such a scam!!!! read more

Lynette and her team have been very professional with me as a tenant in the 3+ years that I've lived in one of their managed properties. Maintenance issues have consistently been resolved. They were also very communicative with tenants as Richmond's rent control ordinance went into effect and every landlord in the city was flying blind for a few months. I think most people will have good or bad experiences with Bartels based on the quality of the landlord. I purchased an 8-unit apartment building in Richmond about a year and a half ago and selected Bartels to manage it. They have been great! Lynette has always been very helpful and provided me with good advice when needed. They have 2 friendly employees up front -- Sonja and Angelica -- who process rental applications, among other things, and Paula, the leasing manager who does a great job in letting tenants know what is expected of them in terms of cleaning during pre-move out inspections. They have a handyman they send out for routine fixes, to keep costs low when a licensed contractor isn't needed. And they have sources for low-cost replacement appliances. We've been renting a town house under Bartels for about 7 months now. So far no issues. The rental application process was surprisingly fast. We were initially told it could take up to 2 weeks to find out if we were accepted and we heard back the following day and signed within the week! Any repairs needed they are always very quick to get someone out to the home to fix whatever I ask for. My only complaint would be that the house initially was not in the best/cleanest condition. Very dusty and many cobwebs. We had to do a lot of cleaning before moving in. I will be curious to see the charges whenever we decide to move but until then, this property mgmt has been nothing but simple to work with. read more

The water heater started smoking in my place the day I started to move in, which was the Saturday of a 3 day weekend, but they were out here within an hour or so to fix it. I think I'm generally polite and friendly, but they made it clear they weren't particularly interested in me or in getting those properties rented. I've seen several of their rentals. Went into the office once when they were all focused on discussing what to get for lunch. They were all irritated I was there, but their office was open and it's their job to show properties. I was somehow the bad guy bc I wanted to find a place to live. I hope the property owners are reading this too bc they only show a property 1x / day, regardless of whether you're a good candidate or not. Some of their properties are on the market for months. So the property owner is losing a lot of money waiting for rentals, and people who need housing are being treated poorly. Makes me nervous to get a property through them bc I wouldn't want to have to deal with them long term. Think I'll stick with craigslist and Zillow. read more

I had a tenant from hell, and I mean really from hell, and Lynette was there for me all the way and got them out of the house without it being damaged or requiring an eviction. This property management took over for another company who was originally managing the house we were renting. First off, when we first moved into the house it was a sh** hole. "New carpets" that were covered in bleach stains. Closet doors that didn't work, the wrong sliding glass door, broken dishwasher, etc I could go on for days. So they take over and come in to do a walk through on our house, which later on they admit they lost all paperwork/files. We originally decided to move out when they wanted to raise the rent on us. We put in our 30 day notice in July and beginning of august we were moved out and had deep cleaned the house which they walked through and stated how great of a job we did. We replaced 3 sets of blinds along with fixing the front and back yards. When we got what we thought was our down deposit it was a notice that they expected 800$+ dollars after the 2500$ deposit in deductions which included 750$ in late fees we were never notified of as well as unpaid rent 813$ from 9/1-9/12 and stated we did not put in a notice until 8/15 (she never entered out notice and assured us this would not be a problem) so when my boyfriend calls the office he is told she is walking out the door (30 mins to close) he told them he would be there in 2 minutes to speak with her and she said "Do not come here" and hung up in his face. These people will take you for everything you have and some. They are a SCAM and they are the worst property management I have EVER delt with. They are never willing to explain anything to you or even listen to anything they are rude and inconsiderate and I hope NO ONE EVER USES THIS PROPERTY MANAGMENT. read more

My husband and I used Bartels for about seven years. We have nothing but PRAISE. We first had Bartels manage one of our rentals of a duplex. They did an excellent job. We ended up having to terminate the least with the tenants and Bartels was on the job taking care of the procedure (which could have been ugly because the tenants left the place a mess and felt they still should get ALL of their deposit back). The last four years we decided to actual rent a condo on the Marina through Bartels. Again, excellent, professional service. We loved the place and after four years decided to move to relocate. After making sure we left the condo in the condition they gave it to us (that does mean you have to have the carpets professionally cleaned people). We received al of our deposit back. This review isn't because we got back our deposit back (because I am actually late writing our review by two months), it's because they are better than people realize. It's more common to write a review when you are not pleased (rather it's wrong on your behalf or not), but we are bad at taking time out and give praise where and when it is needed. wait until you have a disagreement with them, Lynnette, the manager will talk down to you, like a furious mom. they will not give a a chance to speak your case. make things up about how the security deposit is used. I lived in a property managed by them for over two years. it all started when the washer broke. she must have been having a bad day, her tone of voice was agitated enough for me to feel uncomfortable, she told me that it was my responsibility, and I have to replace it. i told her forget it, i will use my own; she then told me that the broken washer will be taken out of my security deposit; I've never heard of that. she also told me that security deposits can be used to take out late fees, and it cannot be used to pay unpaid rent. according to consumer affairs, both r wrong. that's fine too. when I called them over the period of two weeks to get my security deposit back, they never answered my call, i called them today to tell them that they are in violation on the 21 day security deposit rule, she finally answered my call and talked down to me, and told me that I have been like this since day one; like what? she told me that she mailed out a check on the sixth, so i asked for a tracking number or a conf number.... she said, i can send you another one... i still don't have my security deposit yet. i am in the process to solve this legally read more
