I stopped and asked for a good hamburger place and was sent to Giant Burger. This place was like a cut scene from "The Usual Suspects". It was great, small, clean (even with what looked like a bullet hole in the window), a bit dated and friendly people, both guest and staff. We had Giant Burgers and Chicken Sandwichs, they were excellent. We will make it a regular stop on my Oregon trips both coming and going. read more

Be careful & look for yourself... I took my son here today & while waiting for our order I watched their cook pull raw beef patties out of the fridge with his bare hands. He then dropped the parties on the grill & went straight to placing lettuce & tomatoes etc. on customers burgers without washing his hands or using gloves. I was honestly shocked as all of the customers are in plain view of the kitchen. I watched & he repeated the same disgusting display of food handling again at which point I immediately asked for my order to be canceled & for a refund. The customer service of the cashier was outstanding, she accommodated my cancelation without issue, but after spending over 10 years in the restaurant industry I just couldn't settle with giving that food to my son or myself knowing the dangers of improperly handing raw beef. Maybe someday we will give it another try, but today was a major turn off. read more

Great food, But not going back because cross contamination. It's a shame. Someone's going to get sick. The cashier helps wrap burgers without washing hands. The meat girl touches raw burger meat, tops of burger buns, and refrigerator door handle to get onions and wraps the burgers. While the fry girl makes fries and grabs fry sauce from the fridge where the meat girl just grabbed. Yuck ppl! read more

We Got into Redding last night, a little late. Got the swamp cooler working and decided where to go to eat while the house cooled down. I told my wife I was in the mood for a good old fashioned drive in burger fries shake and all. The warm evening was slowly loosing it's light to the twilight of the comming night. She suggested Bartells and explained it was one of Redding's longstanding classic drive in burger joints. The big Windows overlooked the streets at the intersection. We went in and ordered the thick Chocolate shake, fries, and the Giant Burger medium well ( They cook to your specifications and describe what rare is) They said that they would bring the order out, so we sat outside. The sound of music turned up loud drifted from the cars at the stop light. The night was warm and reminded me of those special trips to the drive in when I was a kid. The food came out and my mouth started watering as soon as those delightful aromas reached my nose. Yum! Those thin crispy fries were delightful and their fry sause was Better than Ketchup!! The meat was perfectly cooked and juicie! The ice cold shake was great. All in all it was a perfect blast from the past, Darn Good Drive in meal. I can't wait for the next one!! we stopped at this place for lunch while driving through town and it was definitely the right choice. when we got inside, there was a little bit of a line. but we were ordering within 5 minutes. the prices were pretty reasonable. i got the giant burger, fries, and a chocolate shake. the service was pretty fast. you can see them making the burgers right after you order. i would definitely come here again. read more

We have been customers for 20+ years. Yes for awhile the food went downhill but is now about the same as it was when we first started going and we have no complaints about the food or prices just the service. We recently placed a phone order on a Sunday during lunch and they told us it would be ready in ten minutes which is about how long it takes for us to get there. When we arrived there was a line out the door. We tried calling to let them know we were there to pick up and they placed us on hold. I tried calling on my cell phone and apparently they had taken the phone off line and when we told a passing worker we just wanted to pick up he ignored us. We stood in that line for 20 minutes after we got there just to pay for something we had already ordered and was now cold and soggy. There are several ways for a business to handle this kind of problem better like maybe for the cashier to ask if anyone in line is picking up or have a second line for pick ups. I know they were super busy but still customers shouldn't have to pay high prices for cold food. read more

Maybe I'm being a little harsh but when you call your place "Giant Burger" I expect, well, giant burgers. "Bartel's Average Sized Burgers" would be a much more accurate, if less appealing, name. They're not bad but they're not giant, or big, or large, or even above average sized. Buyer beware. read more

This little hamburger place is awesome! A 40 year business that has stayed in business in this day in n out and other burger chains...they hold their own. The meat was fresh, the lettuce and tomatoes crisp. The prices are darn right perfect. I applaud them for staying in business all these years and their help is friendly and efficient!! This place is my all time favorite burger place. They have these really huge juicy burgers and make them any way you want it. The bun is always fresh and the burger is always good and messy. Who can ask for anything more? Oh yes, the french fries are great too and come with a special dipping sauce. This is one of my go to spots when we go up to Redding and I find myself craving one of their burgers when I'm back in southern california. Wish they would set one up down here. It has a really funky atmosphere and is always packed, yet somehow they seem to get your burger to you in a reasonable amount of time. read more

Had the giant burger, which was OK, but patty unevenly cooked. Tomato, onions and lettuce were fresh but bun average. Prices are too high for what you get and they don't have onion rings. Restroom was very clean. Pepsi products. read more

Ordered pretty fast, but when it came to our food, we waited 20 minutes. People who had larger orders and who came after us got their food first. When a staff member brought what he thought was our food to us, the owner/manager yelled "I didn't give you a name so how do you know it's theirs!" He responded that we had been waiting awhile, and she said "their food is not ready! That belongs to----!" Our milkshake we ordered was supposed to be a malt milkshake, no malt in the shake. Our burger orders were wrong. There was no mayo, to much mustard, and one of ours had lettuce when asked for no lettuce. Their fry sauce was just mayo mixed with ketchup. My husband and I decided to try all of the local burger joints here in Redding. This week was Bartels. We ordered two giant burgers with everything, one fry, and a root beer float. The customer service was excellent and the girl who took our order told me to let her know when I needed more root beer for my float and she would refill it. I thought that was so nice. We ate our float while we waited for the food. The ice cream was so good in it. We got our food very quickly too. I don't think we had even been there for ten minutes before it came out. I was surprised by how big the burgers were. I was bitter about how pricey they were ($5.25 each) but once we got them and ate them we knew it was definitely worth it. The burger was classic, and they were very generous with the meat. I really liked how they didn't use a bunch of sauce on it so we really got to taste the amazing flavor of the meat. The fries were also excellent. While this place may seem a bit pricey, its worth it. I have spent more at Five Guys and left way less satisfied than I was at Bartels. Definitely give this place a try. read more

We've enjoyed Bartels' burgers for years, but I'll never go there again. I agree with Paul D. who wrote on 6/24/16. The UNSANITARY cooking methods are atrocious! Not only does the cook handle the raw meat, then put the vegetables on the buns, but when the cashier jumps in to help SHE handles the vegetables with her bare hands after taking money from several people at the cash register. It was disgusting. I wanted to ask for a refund, but there was quite a crowd and I just wanted to get out of there. Couldn't bring myself to eat it and threw it all away. read more

Seriously the best burger you can get in town, there are still two locations left this one in Redding and one in Anderson. I just ate at this one the other day with my sister when she was in town. Have been a Bartel's burger fan for years. until a week ago. The buns and burgers have been changed! heaven forbid!... the bun is bigger and tasteless, while the burger appears smaller and grizzly and tasteless.... bring back the original formula!!!.. I'll pay the extra, just keep that original combination. Bartel's WAS last and only place to get a really great burger... sadly it appears that they have succumbed to the profit monster, and down graded all of their menu items.... For years this has been a regular stop for me along I-5. Stopped there again yesterday evening. Just like on my last visit, my 2-person order got screwed up. Got us the burgers (sloppy and yummy as always), but no fries. Cook blames the woman who took the order for not writing it down correctly. Cook asks if we still want fries. Well, we paid for them, so yes that would be nice. Cook dumps fries in fryer then walks away from the kitchen. They had 3 people working yesterday evening at 6:30, and we were the only customers. But all 3 workers disappeared into the back. No sign of the owner. We finish our burgers about 10 minutes later when the cook reappears, and discovers the fries are completely burned. She's about to dump in another batch when we tell her forget it, we're done eating. She says fine, whatever. We clean up our table and walk out - the 3 employees are all in the back again, nobody says anything, no offer to refund for the fries, no thanks for coming in. Indifferent attitude. We were on a long trek and stopped in Redding for dinner. Googled restaurants on my iphone, saw "Bartels Giant Burger" and since we don't like chains, we stopped there. It was 5:59pm and there was no one else there, but the young man behind the counter saw us in the parking lot and was eagerly waiting for us when we walked in. We each ordered the Giant Burger (it was a 1/3 lb vs. 1/6 lb), cooked medium with cheese and grilled onions and everything on it and a large fries to share. I got a small chocolate malt. By the time we sat down to wait for our order, the place was packed. The burger was VERY messy (mmm...), we were still remembering the burger today and marveled at how we didn't get heartburn even though it was REALLY MESSY. They offered "special sauce" with the fries and I used it on my burger, too (it was mayo/ketchup mixture). The malt was good, very chocolatey, but I would have liked more malt flavor (I LOVE malt flavor and should have probably asked for extra). FYI, The small sized malt was actually the child size (about 10 oz., pretty much what I wanted). The service was VERY GOOD! The place was dumpy--pretty much like a 1950s burger joint -- which made it all the more authentic. The restrooms were clean. We plan to go back to Bartels next time we're in Redding. read more

so happy we found the place. got there an hour before the closed on sunday after coming from Hayfork we were hungry. staff was very nice the food was good, a little higher than I expected 2 burgers 1 soda 1 fri almost $20.00 but it filled us up and they didnt trip we had our little baby doggie outside with us, thanks guys read more
