This particular Bartells has been my drugstore choice for many many years. However, the last few months I've noticed the shelves getting more and more empty. You can't help but notice at this point! We keep wondering if they are going to be closing permanently . However, I asked one of the pharmacist techs about it, and she said she didn't know anything about a closure. So I guess we will just have to wait and see. I still shop there, and I still recommend it, just be aware that they might be out of what you're looking for. If they are not closing, I sure hope that they work out whatever kinks are in their system that keep them from replenishing their shelves! This is about an incident that occurred in their parking lot today. My exterior driver side car mirror was vandalized today. I came out from shopping and picking up a prescription to find my mirror had been hit and shattered. This happened around 6:30pm May 18th 2023. I'm on hold with the Magnolia Bartells. The timer on my phone says I've been holding for more than 37 minutes. A live body answered and said I'd need to hold. Reasonable, but now it has been more than 39 minutes. This is the absolute worst customer service. Bartells has sucked since they were bought by Rite Aid "Nothing will change." Yeah, right! Do not get your passport photos taken here. The passport agent rejected my photos because they were too blurry and my daughter's bangs were covering her eyebrows. I had to get them retaken at the post office and Bartells would not refund me for the rejected photos. read more

Short story: Flying to HI soon so I asked my Dr for a fresh Covid shot. He said to contact a pharmacy for quicker service. As a lifelong fan of Bartells I went to the magnolia store. The pharmacy receptionist was indifferent at best, rude at worst. Conversation: Clerk: "How can I help you?" Me: I need a 2024/2025 Covid shot. (Apparently these are new and not everyone has them yet) Clerk: "We've had the new one for a few months but it's expensive" Me: I think my insurance will pay. Clerk: "What insurance? Oh never mind, just fill out this form" Me: "My doc also recommended an RSV shot" Clerk: "You want both at the same time? How old are you? We don't give these if your under 75" Me: "I'm 71 but my doc recommended it" Clerk: "It used to be 65, now it's 75. Just fill out he form and you can ask the pharmacist later" At that point I just left. Please note: she was not friendly or rude but she had a negative response to every one of my questions or comments. I have been praying that Bartells survives Rite Aids recent travails. Since the Bartell family cashed in their chips to Rite Aid... my neighborhood store ( Magnolia) has gone downhill quite a bit. Okay we cut them slack because of the Covid situation and the shelves were less than 50% full. Fast forward to today 2023 and the shelves are still, for the most part empty. Worst pharmacy I have ever been to in 50 years. Every and I mean every time I go to pick up a prescription from them there is a problem. It's not ready, they can't reach the doctor, they restocked the med, insurance is not paying, system is down, out of stock etc etc etc. I have used CVS for years without any of these problems even once. Was forced by insurance to switch to Bartells. Will be contacting our HR department with formal complaint to allow us to switch back to CVS. I rarely write reviews and am pretty tolerant of bad customer service but Bartells, at least the Magnolia office, takes this to a new level. As a physician if I gave this type of service to my patients not only would I have no patients but I would have frequent flyer parking at the courthouse for malpractice. STAY AWAY read more

The worst! Been their client for over 30 years but since they were sold to Rite Aide they have been awful. Medications unavailable. They are unable to receive prescriptions, unable to recommend different formulations (like 2 - 5mg tablets when they are out of 10mg tablets). Never call doctors to get the prescriptions straightened out. 0 service. As to the rest of the store. Empty shelves everywhere, boxes unloaded. They suck. CVS is a block away. I go to this Bartell's every so often when in the area. They have a small selection of groceries and you can buy toys and drugstore essentials, or pick up a quick gift and card. Sometimes the lines are slow and the checkers sometimes make mistakes ringing you up, but they're always nice and the store is pretty decently organized. No complaints, it's fine! read more

This review is specific to the pharmacy and the pharmacist who is quite frankly amazing. I visited Bartell's today, begrudgingly to get a Moderna booster shot. I hate shots and I hate getting them more than anything, and the last shot was quite painful, so i was not looking forward to this one. However I have to give enormous credit to the pharmacist who gave me the shot, because not only was it 100% painless, but he was really considerate and friendly, when I know he was also extremely busy. I used to LOVE Bartell Drugs---- just a great store to get your prescriptions filled and find all kinds of good stuff. Before it was bought by Rite Aid I could walk in with a refill -- wait maybe 15,20 minutes and it would be done! Wow!! Now it's AWFUL!! You're lucky to get something filled or refilled in a couple of days. They have a system that's supposed to send a text when you're RX is ready and you can then pay in advance and choose to have it delivered. I recently called in a RX for warfarin --- I had a few left so it wasn't urgent. I called a week later and the person who answered the phone mumbled some unintelligible reason why it wasn't ready( no text received either) said in a couple of hours which turned out to be about 4 hrs. Now I'm waiting for a text for some items that my husbands oral surgeon sent in ---- important things like antibiotics & mouth rinse. Again --- no text to notify it's ready. I called and was told it's ready. I requested- again - a text so I can prepay and get it delivered. It's been an hour and a half --- no text. What the heck!!!!! I know the staff is working hard---- but what a disaster----- since RiteAid took over--- they ruined Bartells!!!!! read more

I have been a loyal customer of Bartell's in Magnolia for 35 years. I loved shopping there and the pharmacy was the best. The disaster at the pharmacy though may drive me away from ever using the Magnolia Bartell's pharmacy again. They NEVER answer the phone and their voice messaging is FULL always. The only way to deal with Bartell's pharmacy is in person. Tonight (Friday) I went on line to confirm the pharmacy hours. The website said open until 9 p.m. The front door also said open until 9 on Friday evening. So hoping to avoid the perpetually long lines during most of the day at the pharmacy, I drove to Bartell's to get my prescription at 8:20 p.m. Despite the published hours, the pharmacy was closed. So the already delayed presription refill will wait another day. I will stand in the long line tomorrow, fuming about the sale to Rite-Aid. My conclusion for this abysmmal service is that Rite Aid must have purchased Bartell's for a purchase price based on the next few years of Bartell's gross revenue because Rite Aid is doing its best to drive away loyal Bartell's customers, the result of which will be to drive down Bartell's revenues and then allow Rite Aid to pay a lower purchase price. The other explanation for this disgusting customer service is that Rite Aid does not care about satisfied customers. I will be going to CVS a few blocks down the street because the CVS pharmacy does everything the way Bartell's did pre Rite Aid. Even though CVS is out of my insurance company's network, I would rather submit the CVS charges for reimbursement than deal with Bartell's pharmacy. read more

This is not so much a review for this Bartell as it is a review for all Bartells. This just happened to be my first visit since the announcement of the sale. What I noticed, and hope does not change with the new owners, is the height of the store shelves is perfect and so easy to see from one end of the store to the other - I hope that this does not change, but I am afraid it probably will since you cannot cram as much inventory when you keep your shelves at a decent height for those under 6' to see over. read more

Worst experience ever! I needed a passport image and called to ask details? I called store 6 times and every single time they would answer and hang up? Each phone prompt take 10 mins to get them on the phone, and then to have it hang up again! Finally ,accidently the Pharmacist answers main phone and was stressed and extremely rude and didnt even answer "rite aid" When I asked if it was that store he yelled at me? He re routed me and again they answered and hung up! !! Finally I got an operator and they explained "phones have been messed up for a few weeks and are hanging up"!! Proving these people that do answer are overwhilmed with customers being hung up on? ----------I decided to come in and have passport photo regardless of details and questions? ! I arrived and asked the cashier for info and if "they do passports" ? He gave me a aggressive dirty look? That is my main concern! He seemd disheveled and mean! I should have left at that point! My friend agreed he was out of line? He was irritated he was the one that had to take image- Who wants to be photgraphed with that kind of agression? ! He seemd pissed that he had to do even as as I was sitting down! As I sat down (2 of us where having pics) We asked if "we could turn on our cell phone light" since overhead store lights were so unfattering- He explained "it wasnt possible and would mess with perimeters "? As he started to take my friend turned light on to "try" it?? He got irrate and said "Im not helping you, ive explained its our protocol" At this point we agreed that was fine .but his attitude was so rude!. i said "Well lets not do this afterall".. Then he he got agressive and asked us to leave? This was not appropriate and very rude once again! He simply hates his job and should not be in customer service period!-------- fibnally I did lose my temper and told him his was an "a hole", and then he screamed at me louder, now having ammunition and gas lighing situation!! HE explained I swore at him get out" Failing to recognize why I was upset with entire bad experience? I mentioned "you originally gave me an extremely dirty look and had both of us insulted" He proceeded to tell me to "get out"! I calmed his rant down and said "I just wanted to expain how customer serivce shouldnt be this abrasive" He continued to be aggressive! -----------------------------------------------------------They used to have nice employees for years at this store! Ive been a customer for 20 years! btw It was 15 mins before closing time Feb 1st. Most drug stores you can get in and out of in under 10 minutes if you know what you are looking for but not the Bartell Drugs in Magnolia. Attempting to check out at any checkstand in this store is a painful experience because the staff seems to operate under the assumption that we all want to spend our entire day in the store. Did you call in a prescription and stop by to pick it up? That line of 2 people in front of you will *literally* take 25 minutes. [It only took that little time because eventually a pharmacist will check you out while the clueless cashier blathers on and on (and on and on) to a customer about someone's wedding.]. Want to check out with that bottle of vitamins? You will wait in line for 10 minutes - though there are 2 cashiers and you are first in line - while the cashiers drone on and on to the one customer that they have been "helping" the entire time you have been waiting in line. I've got no problem with employees using work as their social hour if there isn't a line of people waiting (and the person they are talking to is a willing participant in the extended interaction) but they need to be mindful of the fact that being stuck at the drugstore in a line isn't everyone's preferred way to spend their day. Ps: I frequent a number of other "5 star" Bartell's locations - this is the only one that I know of that needs (A LOT) of work. read more

While looking for a Christmas card (or "Holiday" card for those freedom fighters involved in the War on Christmas), I stumbled into the Magnolia Bartells. There's actually a pretty nice selection of knick-knacks in the store. In addition to this, they had a number of Christmas items including candies, decorations and, yes, Christmas cards. I even found one that passed the delayed laugh test (if you think it's funny, carry it around with you for five minutes and look at it again. If you laugh again, then you've got a winner.). This location is a little on the smaller end and probably wouldn't be the place to do serious grocery shopping. They have a wonderful array of trinkets and small groceries (e.g. little carryout items like Pringles have a wide selection here) but just finding some of the basics was a little hard. Parking was also sparse with cars lined up into the street waiting for spots. Perhaps everyone else also knew that this was the go-to place for Christmas card shopping. read more

A couple of observations about Bartells (both good): --Try to get away with spending less than $50. Each time I go for one or two items, I find myself walking away with 4 bags and have spent $50. --Try to live only on items purchased in Bartells. This is totally a joke, but you can probably actually live on the stuff they sell there: milk, cheese, meat (beef jerky), sometimes fruit. The only thing they're missing is produce. Since Riteaid has taken over Bartell Drugs, the store has gone steadily downhill. The pharmacy is extremely slow and inefficient. There is always at least a 6 person line to pick up my prescription on a good day, and usually they don't have all my prescriptions ready. I usually give them a five day lead on refills but that's not long enough. The pharmacy leaves voicemail messages on my phone to call them, but they don't answer their phones and the voicemail box is always too full to leave one anyway. I'm moving my prescriptions to CVS. read more

The Magnolia Bartell's, as a whole, isn't terrible. The pharmacy however, is disgraceful. I dropped my prescriptions off on a Saturday afternoon, and returned on a Sunday afternoon to retrieve them, and low and behold, they weren't ready, despite the fact I was told at drop off, that they would be ready in 20 minutes. upon learning that my prescriptions were not ready, the teenager behind the counter talked to the pharmacist, who assured they'd be ready in 15 minutes. If I had wanted to wait even more time to get my prescription, I would have gotten a mail order refill. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time something like this has happened, and It becomes increasingly frustrating each time it occurs. read more

I love the Magnolia Bartells. It feels like a bona fide neighborhood store rather than part of a local chain. The staff are very friendly and helpful and make me feel like I'm Norm walking into the Cheers bar (only without the beer). The pharmacists are also quite knowledgeable and approachable. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 only because the manager made the staff stop giving my dog treats, much to the chagrin of both the cashiers and my dog. Also, the Bartells employee health insurance program used to be really bad because it didn't cover birth control pills -- I'm not sure if that has changed or not, but there was a big stink about it. read more

The pharmacy staff is extremely rude. Never been to a pharmacist or a pharmacy in general with such a horrid experience time after time. I moved to the area so I had to change my pharmacy from downtown to magnolia bartells. The staff here 1. Makes me feel super badly about the medication and prescription that I pick up monthly. 2. The staff will tell you they won't hold onto your future scripts and you have to bring them in monthly. And then the best part, now they stopped having the medications I need. I brought my script in a month ago and they RUDE black hair woman told me to go to a different one. So I did. They filled it on the spot. So This month tried to come earlier in the month to give my script to the rude black haired lady. She said no problem, they'd call me when it's filled. The day it's supposed to be filled. DAY OF. they call me to say they can't fill the script and they don't know when they will so I should come and take my hard copy back. This place is rude. Unorganized and unprofessional. I wouldn't trust them with even filling my gas tank. The people working at the actual checkout stand are amazing. Pharmacy is a nightmare. read more

The pharmacy is a joke. I frequently wait for five or more minutes on the phone to fill a prescription, and half the time they end up hanging up on me without picking up the phone. It's not hard to find other reviews for this location outlining awful experiences with the pharmacy. A great neighborhood pharmacy,......it's the ONLY one in Magnolia, thank goodness. One of the biggest attributes they have and always have had is when they advertise for their week's ad, they ALWAYS have stock at the beginning of THAT WEEK and you don't need an immediate raincheck like some of the competitive pharmacies. Surprised to see all the negative reviews here. It's true that the checkout lines sometimes get a bit long and the checkers are a bit slow, but that's about the only complaint I have about the place. I've never had a real issue with the pharmacy. There's the occasional we-called-you-to-let-you-know-your-prescription-is-ready-I-never-got-a-call confusion, but that's OK. Recently I brought an item to the pharmacist we'd gotten at the hospital to see if there was anything available at retail that was comparable. He ended up pointing me in the completely wrong direction, but the nice thing was that when we came back with two opened packages the manager had absolutely zero problem accepting the return. When we've been unable to find items in the supplement aisles the pharmacist has always been happy to come out personally if one of the floor staff couldn't help us. And everyone's really friendly. There could be more selection, but that's a function of the store's size. Last but not least, it's really great having the option to get flu shots here. My wife and I got ours in late August, when the vaccine wasn't even available other places. I like supporting this local chain and am glad there's one in Magnolia. It's true that I don't really have a choice if I want to fill prescriptions or get drugstore items in the neighborhood--Bartell's is all there is unless you want to go up on Queen Anne or over to Ballard--but they definitely don't take advantage of the situation. I'd be going here even if the local QFC and Albertsons had pharmacies, or if there were other chain stores nearby. read more

Really awesome pharmacists! They have gone the extra mile to find some rare migraine medication for me and have it there in the store at a convenient time for me to come and pick up. Also, service can be very slow, even when there's only one other person in line to pay. The pharmacy is even worse, especially if you go in for a flu shot. I've been going to this store for 20 years and what I love most about it is that it truly feels like a neighborhood store. The staff there have mostly been there for years, and it is nice to chat and catch up with them. I would much rather shop at this local chain than at Walgreen's or some other national store. It feels so much more personal. Everyone there is always friendly and helpful, and I can generally find exactly what I need and would expect to find at a drugstore, and then some. read more
