I finally made it to Barry's Buns...twice! The first time I went I had the Large Cinnamon Roll. It is large and good. I did bring it home and popped it in the microwave for a few seconds so the icing softened up some. The icing to bun ratio is good. The second time I went I had the Apple Crumb Sticky Bun and the Sticky Bun Bread Pudding (no photos). I loved the apple crumb sticky bun. It was by far the best dessert I had of the three I tried. It was so good I did not share that with my kids who were plotting on my good. The bread pudding was my least favorite so that was shared. I was hoping for more flavor. I didn't get much of a sticky bun flavor. There's many more sweets I want to try so I will be back to sample those. read more

After grabbing some lunch at MoMos of Tibet following the Flower Show, I was tempted by all the delicious looking cinnamon buns at Barry's. I tried the seasonal flavor, which was hot chocolate. It was a terrific texture and interesting because I've never had that type of a dough with chocolate. I think it would have been even more delicious warmed up! I liked the variety and the prices were so affordable! (I was expecting NYC type prices). I had an allergen question and received a friendly answer. This is a cute little spot in the Market at Fareway. There were some tables inside (full) and outside (empty) when we went during the week, mid afternoon. I was in the area earlier today and decided to stop in. Because I'm greedy a grabbed a few treats: an Oreo pop tart, crumb cake and coffee cake. My favorite was the crumb cake. Be warned it's very buttery/greasy but still very good. The crumb cake was a little on the dry side but the crumb topping was excellent. My hubby is an Oreo fiend and was vary happy with his choice. Barry's Buns was a delicious sweet treat. I tried their maple bacon sticky buns at a food festival in Easton public market. Firstly the sticky bun was super heavy and dense. It was like eating breakfast. The icing was not to sweet and the inside was soft and gooey. Barry and his wife were really friendly and I learned that their products are home made and all natural so no artifical ingredients! Overall, I believe I paid 5.00 and it was worth it cause it would be challenging to eat at one time. BTW the sticky bun taste better warm, 30 seconds in the microwave does wonders! read more

Barry's Buns is another small shop in the Markets at Wayfare on Germantown Avenue, Chestnut Hill. They do all manner of bakery sweets that go well with coffee for breakfast, or any other time of day when you desire a tasty sugar fix. When I was there on Saturday afternoon the market was packed with beer drinkers both inside and out. Perhaps because of that Barry's inventory was pretty much threadbare. All I saw were a few chunks of Crumb Cake, Jewish Apple Cake, and somethings that looked like fruit topped cupcakes. The woman working the counter was friendly and answered my questions about what was left and smoothly packed up my order of two Crumb Cakes into a white paper bag. My sense was that as soon as her meagre stock was gone, so was she. If she had been willing to sell that apple cake by the wedge, rather than requiring the whole kubboodle go at once, I would have been happy to grab a handful. I love Jewish Apple Cake, but I didn't want the temptation of bringing it home in my car. I couldn't trust myself not to dive in and fist large handfuls into my mouth like the 8 year old kid lurking within would do. I did more calmly sample a piece of the Crumb Cake on the way after stopping at Poppy's Cafe for hot coffee to wash it down. It was excellent - still moist, soft, sweet, with clumped brown sugar/cinnamon/butter embedded within like a happy toy in a Cracker Jack box. We ended up getting a plain, a plain with cream cheese icing, and an apple topped. We asked the recommendation for heating (Barry said 25 seconds in the microwave) and headed home. So we've had the apple and the cream cheese one so far. Heated just enough, they're soft, doughy, and sweet without being cloying. Here's my preamble-I use Philly Food Works as my CSA for organic groceries. Barry's Buns is one of their vendors. I have never been to the bricks and mortar store. Over the past 4 or 5 Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, I've ordered (through Philly Food Works) Barry's holiday cookie platter, the pumpkin eclairs, the pumpkin roll and the pumpkin pie. 2022 will be my last year of ordering anything from Barry's Buns. Since I rarely bake anything and would never tempt fate as a singleton by baking trays of cookies that I know I'd probably scarf before they were even cool enough to eat, I loved the idea of Barry's assorted cookie platter. While festively presented, this a plate of "one taste" cookies. Sure, there appear to be at least half a dozen varieties but they all taste exactly the same. Generically sweet, no buttery taste. I doubt Santa would think well of me if I werer to leave a plate of these out on Christmas Eve. The birds got the majority of this last platter. Better them than me. Every year but this one, I have ordered the pumpkin eclairs in lieu of a pumpkin pie. They're alright as far as eclairs go. The filling is pumpkiny and not overly sweet. The choux pastry is done reasonably well and it does not get soggy. They are thoroughly underwhelming, though. This year, I deviated from the forgettable eclairs and boring cookies. Instead I ordered Barry's pumpkin roll (like a jelly roll) and Barry's pumpkin pie. A friend was in from the West coast and I'd invited him over for a pre-Thanksgiving afternoon tea. Fortunately I sampled the pumpkin roll a few hours before my guest arrived. It was as dry and stiff as a mummy. I don't know if it had been made days before, frozen and then defrosted or if it was from a bad batch but it was inedible. The birds got that one, too as I scrambled around Center City for some tempting replacement tea tray treats. I saved the pumpkin pie for my own solitary, non traditional (crab cakes and a citrussy salad) Thanksgiving meal and even made spiked whipped cream as a topping. When my dishes were done, my kitchen was clean after my festive meal (who needs turkey anyway?!) and I returned from a post prandial walk, my heart was set on a pot of loose tea and a large slice of pie adorned with that home made whipped cream. Upon unboxing, the crust of the pie appeared to be raw. It was pale, flaccid, sticky and had no toothsomeness. At first I thought I'd pop it in the oven to get some color and texture on the crust. Upon further consideration, given that the filling was custard and had already been cooked/baked, it seemed best to give up on the pie altogether. I toasted and buttered an English muffin to accompany my tea, sliced up a Honeycrisp apple, shelled a few walnuts and pecans and was pleased with my impromptu, thrown together dessert. While I try hard to support small farms, mom and pop vendors and indie businesses, I also subscribe to the "fool me once, shame on you..." philosophy. Barry's Buns has already fooled me too many times. This year was the final straw. read more

Impression: just as the reviews say- this place was super- on seeing such beautiful luscious glazed Buns, you're already sold and wanting to get some! You can 6 buns for 15$, or each bun for 3$. The options are walnut raisin, raisin, walnut, Apple crumble, plain, seasonal special, cream cheese filled- their crumble and cake slices also looked phenomenal. Make sure to get some coffee or tea to go with these otherwise super sweet concoctions We got the box of 6 buns for 15$. I think the raisin and walnut raisin ones were my fav- microwave them the next day and they are magical. The seasonal we got was the coconut cream one and that was also good- the glaze on top is like caramel so it may get sticky on the teeth rather than the gooey stickiness that comes with normal buns. A sweet shop/bakery that sell different type of sticky buns and other bake goods. It was located inside a food court. I got the raisin and the original flavor and both were overly sweet for me. I was expecting it to be sticky but it wasn't. It was like the cinnamon roll without the frosting. That was disappointing. I had an amazing babka bun the first time I came here...but I've been disappointed every time since. And I've been here like five times now, hoping the all the bad experiences were flukes. They never have the babka buns anymore. And the buns they do have are always weirdly dry in the outer 2/3, even if you head home and reheat them. Not sure if they're over baking them or routinely selling day-old products. They also have a weird aftertaste, not sure if they used way too much yeast or cut the butter with margarine or what. But occasionally a place rises above the 'good' and enters the realm of outstanding and one of those places is Barry's Buns in Chestnut Hull. This delicious spot is found in the Chestnut Hill Farmers Market. Every offering here is top-notch. But what I really like is that it carries all the indigenous Philadelphia pastries. My friends from Europe love trying the unique Philly goods rather than the ubiquitous national items which you can get anywhere in America. So I will of course recommend their Philly lemon bars (or lemon squares), their sticky buns, crumb buns (or crumb cakes) and of course Philly butter cakes. And there are variations on these local treats - e.g. I recently had a peach cobbler sticky bun and a mixed berry butter cake. Staff is very friendly at Barry's Buns and indeed customers always seem to appreciate their patience while trying to choose which delicacies to purchase. I've been craving bread pudding for weeks now so when I found a location in Yelp! near me I immediately made the trip to partake. This bread pudding was not worth the trip despite the deliciousness of the name, it was not good. It's obviously made with day(s) old bread which isn't a bad thing. The bad thing is it was so very dry. No moisture, no custard, no cream. I took one bite and although I could've whipped up a cream myself to enhance it, I was so disappointed that I just tossed it. These buns are sent from HEAVEN!!! I can only imagine the calorie count but once you take a bite... it's like a mouthgasm . I also tried their stroopwaffles which were also quite delicious. Better than the packaged stuff you get from Starbucks for sure. They are chewy and not too sweet, which I like. When this place is good, it's GOOD. The problem is we've had such inconsistent experiences over the 10 or so times we've been here. The main thing we order are the cinnamon rolls. Sometimes they're super moist and delicious with plenty of icing, and other times they're VERY dry and flavorless. That goes for both the large size and the mini size. I ordered like 30 minis for Christmas one year and no one ate them because they were so dry (even after heating). If the cinnamon rolls were consistently moist and delicious, we'd be here all the time, but at $5 a pop, I don't think I'm willing to take the risk anymore. read more

Barry's Buns is an amazing find. I have enjoyed every treat that I've eaten from this shop. But I'm writing to say how impressed my family and guests were with the Jewish Apple Cake. Wow. We were hosting some lovely guests from out of town; they invited us to Shabbat dinner. They prepared the entire meal and I wanted contribute something appropriate to the dinner. Barry immediately suggested the apple cake. He explained how the ingredients and preparation were perfectly suited for the occasion. And guess what--the cake was still warm when he boxed it up! It was a beautiful presentation and we all had some after our special dinner. The cake was so moist and full of flavor, that none of us could stop talking about it. In fact, everyone (including those who claim to not have a sweet tooth), had generous second slices!! THEN, we all had more for breakfast. And after lunch. And more after dinner. The cake grew even more moist as time went on. We just couldn't stop eating it! It didn't take long for the cake to be gone. I would easily purchase this cake again for any occasion. Have been going to Barry's Buns for a couple years now, from back during the early Bourse days to the current Chestnut Hill location. It seems as though the quality has deteriorated over time and my wife thinks the same. We normally get the large cinnamon rolls and I remember a time when they were extremely flavorful, moist, and were covered in dense cream cheese frosting. The last few times we've gotten the rolls it's like they resemble something completely different. They don't even look like cinnamon rolls anymore, but rather a large muffin with frosting. The bold cinnamon taste that once was is now virtually flavorless. And what used to be dense cream cheese frosting is now an airy white covering, almost resembling whipped cream. And the consistency is never the same week to week. Sometimes the rolls are moist and chewy, and other times they are dry like they were made days before. I don't know...I suppose they've gotten "too big" due to growth and revenue expectations, and mass producing with cheapened ingredients is the new business model. We'll still go there from time to time, but no longer as regulars. read more

This place...this place is amazing. I went there after an evening of yoga because what isn't more perfect after a night of relaxing stretching and calorie burning than a iced sticky bun!!!? I couldn't help it! First, the smell draws u in and u soon realize that it's a smell u can't say no to. Second, they are soft and fluffy just like a bun should be! Third, would u like that iced is a question that should be asked during multiple times in ur life...in this instance it's a standing ovation YES! My husband and I go to Barry's almost every weekend. They're his absolute fave. I didn't think to get him a birthday cake until the day before a group dinner (whoops!) and oh boy did Barry's come through for me. With less than 30 hours notice they were able to make this custom 2-tiered cinnamon bun cake!!!! I could not have been happier with how it turned out. Had the traditional cinnamon bun w walnuts which was completely and utterly amazing! It was so evenly soft and savory. Sometimes you get them where the top hardens and so does the inside. Not this. Every single bite was as good as the first. My husband said the crumb cake was probably the best he has ever had and he's had many! I've now tried 3 different items on three different occasions and while this may sound a little silly because dessert is of course meant to be sweet, all 3 were overly sweet. I have the world's biggest sweet tooth--no meal is complete without a dessert--but the 3 items I've tried (cinnamon rolls, crumble cake, and waffle) all taste like they've got nearly double the normal ratio of sugar. Way sweeter than any baked goods I've purchased from other bakeries or stores. All items were fresh, not stale. The dough was pretty dense. If you prefer baked goods to be super sweet, they do sell out, so it's best to go earlier in the day, by afternoon the selection is poor. read more

They are located in the Fareway, a small, indoor farmer's market, with indoor and outdoor seating in Chestnut Hill.
