There's a hidden gem in Elkins Park - a small bakery near the SEPTA station. I've been there several times and it's been a wonderful experience each time. We went there this morning to pick up a raisin challah - we were making French Toast! The challah is excellent - rich, soft and sweet, it has a tender, delicious taste. The raisins added an extra touch of sweetness to the French Toast. Then there are the numerous pastries and cookies. We decided to get a few Hamentashen (chocolate and poppy), a raspberry croissant, a chocolate and a raspberry rugelach, and the most amazing looking Sticky Bun. I'll start with the Sticky Bun. It was exceptional; a soft, fluffy, and slightly chewy dough - challah like, but denser. It was laced with a sticky, caramelized glaze, studded with raisins and walnuts. It was 'melt in your mouth delicious', and a must try. Next up - the raspberry croissant. This is not your typical croissant - I'm used to the plain, or chocolate - I can't recall having a raspberry croissant before. It's one of the best I've had. It combines a flaky buttery croissant with a sweet, tart raspberry filling. The Hamentashen were good - the chocolate was better than the poppyseed - as the later needed much more Mohn (poppyseed paste). The rugelach was good; the raspberry was too sticky, but the chocolate was fine. If you're near Elkins Park, and you haven't tried Rolings Bakery, it's time you did! read more

Great bakery. But for years, their raisin challah consistently has but 1-2 raisins per slice. The amount of raisins in their raisin challah barely qualifies it as a raisin challah. Please add more raisins. Otherwise it's great. read more

My mom, my husband, and I took the train up to the Elkins Park station when were in Philly for a long weekend a few weeks ago. Lucky for us - Rolings Bakery faces the station's parking lot and we were in the mood for a treat to enjoy on our walk in Elkins Park. We stopped in at the tiny Kosher bakery and grabbed some hamantashen (prune for me) and rugelach and other treats! Everything was great. The service was great. There's nowhere to sit and enjoy so it's a take and go place, but everything we had was wonderful. If I lived in the area, I'd be temped to pick up some treats from Rolings every Sunday morning! read more

I love this place. In my opinion the best Kosher bakery in the Philadelphia area. I especially like their pumpernickel bread.

I was leaving FoodChaser's Restaurant and ran across Roling's Bakery which is right around the corner at Harrison & Montgomery Ave. in Elkins Park, Pa. I was curious and wanted to check it out. It was a step back in time as soon as you step in. Looks like this bakery has been here for many, many decades. It's very small and nothing fancy at all. I could tell the recipes where generational. I was so excited, looking at all the goodies trying to decide what to get. Finally I got 2 elephant ears and 2 blueberry muffins. The elephant ears were dense, but yet flaky. Both were delicious. Not too sweet and taste like it was cooked from scratch. I would definitely get both of those again! I don't know if it was me or not, but the man behind the counter was staring at me very hard. It made me feel really strange. I don't know what to really say about it. He waited on me just fine, but made me feel strange. Since this was my first time here, maybe I need to give them another try. This is the only reason they get 3 stars. Anyway.... the baked goods were delicious! read more

The worst part about this bakery is trying to find it. I circled around the block 3 times before I spotted the sign. You take some steep steps down into the bakery but once inside you see all the yummy goodies and it makes it worth it. We ordered two of the raspberry twists and they were delectable. The young lady behind the counter was very helpful and apologetic that they had run out of knishes, but that's on us for coming so close to end of day. It is a small bakery, with no fancy accoutrements but the goods speak for themselves. read more

Bagels are my favorite-chewy inside, crisp on the outside. Rugelach are superb! Bow ties are delicious, and I keep them in the house all the time. Flower topped cupcakes are a special treat and present beautifully. So happy Rolings is close to home! read more

B'H_Everything here is amazingly delicious! I lived a couple blocks away, and that can be dangerous, especially for one's waist line. This is serious. I've been to the Kosher bakeries in Budapest, the ones in Los Angeles and New York, and i still think this is the best. Besides all that, you MUST get a piece of Komish Bread, or broit or whatever they choose to call it. Komish is the magic word that b fried Once you get home, call some friends and relatives, depending on how many people show up. Make some tea, and enjoy what you've been missing all your life. Just make sure you don't skimp on the size of the piece you bring home. (They sell it by the lb, You can freeze what you don't eat, but unless you have a problem with your palate, chances are you'll finish it that same afternoon. Then you'll have a nice dinner, and when the house is dark again, you'll sneak to where you left it, you take a thin slice, and another one. Then one by one everybody appears, and you finish eating the last few crumbs. Those are the toasty ones, actually made in heaven!! Can you believe I'm in the hospital right now, and my husband will have to be bring me some of this deliciousness tomorrow!! It's only about 10 miles away from here. I would drive more to get my teeth into that chocolate croissant or that little bit of Kumish Broit. The First little piece that won't allow you to stop eating it. Just be careful and leave some for me. I'm actually salivating, but nobody cares, I'm in my room by myself. Lastly, I figure know how they do it but prices are same or a lot lower the than anything you can go get at a supermarket deli. Its all hand made by family members that we work nicely together. Enjoy!!! Word of caution:. There's very little parking. , In front going down that driveway, or on the street, but watch the signs and wear comfortable shoes, to be able to walk a block or two. PROS: bakery goods fabulous - use flour with no chemicals. I love the whole wheat bagels, rugalach. CONS: customer service. The owner does not require workers to wear masks, and customer masking is optional. It is a small neighborhood shop dependent on its loyal patrons. I spoke with the owner, who refuses to bend on the masking; therefore, I will not return. I am a public health professional and follow science. The NYT covid section for Montgomery county shows a covid increase and recommends masking indoors. I am disappointed that a small shop owner is inflexible concerning customer needs. read more

Rolings Bakery takes you back. Back to either holiday dinners at Bubbie's or to a small little town in Eastern Europe circa 1930. Rolings is a sweet, extremely tiny, no frills bakery with all of those old fashion treats I personally grew up with... babka, rugelach, knishes, strudel, bialys, fresh baked thinner bagels like in Europe and Montreal and challah, oh my!! They also make stunning detailed cupcakes and cakes, chocolate covered croissants and more. You honestly cannot go wrong picking up any dessert here! The chocolate babka and chocolate drizzled rugelach are favorites with my entire extended family however. The challah is really the best around! Whole wheat, plain or raisin, small or large. This kosher bakery in a kind of half basement near the Elkins Park train station is really cute and the staff is always friendly. They are small and dairy free but have a wonderful and very fresh selection of rustic breads, pies, cookies, danish and muffins. They have this thing, like a dense cake log, with some kind of "cream" on top and then drenched in this soft, rich, thick chocolate coating that is crazy good if you feel like saying - "calories be damned!" (which I say in my life way too often *sigh*) But the real stars here are their amazing, unique, hand made bagels. I have never seen any like them, the shapes are not uniform and they are sort of flatish and really crispy and chewy and so scrumptious toasted. I'd give them a four on most of their products but a big five on the bagels. I can never decide between here and Fill A Bagel for which are my most favorite bagels in the whole wide world - both are so good in different ways. read more

The 7 layer cake is worth the drive as i pick up goodies from bucks county and then drive all the way to Lakewood NJ. Also they make great trays of Danish, cookies and more that our staff just loves at the office. No one even asks if they are non dairy. The first time I came here I met Israel and when he found out it was my first time there, he offered a free bagel if and only if I agreed to take a bite out of it right then and there. The man is rightfully proud of his handiwork. Just so happens warm loaves of challah bread were coming out of the oven so I got one of those too. If you like cream cheese, you're gonna have to make an extra stop somewhere else to get some- they don't sell it here. read more

We just moved into the area from Harrisburg and this place is an incredible lifesaver and reminds us of our young married days in NYC...We took home strudel, rugelah, challah and pumpernickle and rye bread and bagels. Been going there since the were on N 5th st. near Cheltenham Ave. A nice Sunday morning walk now to the new location( a bit tricky to find) across from the Elkins Park Train station. It's in the bottom of a house. Really tiny; more than three people and it's crowded. As far as I know thet are the ONLY ones in the Philly area that make a REAL bagel.Chewy. crisp on outside, soft within. Be prepared for a jaw workout, It's a good thing though. They are the best. No two are identical. You get to choose your own.They also have bialys and whole wheat varieties.Their breads are good too; especially the challah. Love the cinnamon buns, muffins and pies as well.. They are Kosher and close early on Fri. and all day Sat. I have tried lots of bagels and no place comes close to these. Look at what a cute cake! I wanted to try this place because they're non-dairy, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I called in a custom cake request and they put me in touch with the cake designer who shared some great ideas. There was a little mix-up with the payment and I accidentally paid twice without realizing. The staff actually came after me and paid me back. Seriously, how honest and amazing! The cake was very rich and dense, as was the frosting. The fudge cake was a little dry, but the icing was sooo creamy. The 8 inch custom cake was $40 and very much worth it. Unfortunately, I just had the worst experience at Roling Bakery. Before even being able to taste their products the customer service was horrible and a turn off. We were looking to get my 40th birthday cake made here, however we wanted to taste their product prior to purchasing. We went in to get a cupcake and the fiasco that ensued by attempting to do so was highly frustrating and quite frankly alarming. The 3 staff were unprofessional, unorganized and it was not an environment that made me want to spend my money. I ended up grabbing a cupcake out of the fridge paying $4.50 for a cupcake I took a pinch of and threw away. It's not that the cupcake was horrible tasting, it just wasn't my taste. That coupled with the bizarre customer service I encountered guaranteed that I will never purchase or recommend this place to anyone. read more

This place by the Elkins Park train station kind of across the street from the ex bank now antiques store is unusual. They are 100% kosher and close for sabbath. They serve no meat and I believe their baked goods do not use dairy (might be wrong) They do great bagels - chewy and each one a unique hand made shape. You get some tongs and a bag and pick your own! They also do nice breads, just wonderful cookies, and some delicious cakes. It's worth the trip - better then Fil a Bagel I think, but no goodies for sale with the bagels like creem cheese I guess due to kosher laws. Worth a trip. No credit cards. Enough good things cannot be said about the quality of goods in this bakery. People say that they have the best bagels and breads in Philadelphia, true NY style, etc. Rollings has their own style, and the bagels and bread are the best I've ever had anywhere. Forget NY and Philly, if this is the taste of Elkins Park. They don't have condiments, but you can stroll across the street to get some at the co-op. The co-op also has fantastic chopped liver. Bagels from Rollins, and chopped liver from across the street, is an absolute heavenly morning. read more

They make a really good bagel - hard on the outside and chewy on the inside - be prepared for some sore jaw muscles if you're not prepared! The only thing that surprised me about this place (maybe because they're more a bakery than pure bagel shop) was that they don't sell any spreads/locks. The single best bagels that I know of in the Philadelphia area, and really the only that I would consider "true NY style bagels." Dense as anything. And if you like dense bagels, this is the place to go, and the real stuff - what I imagine 100 years ago all bagels were like, in terms of density. The apple cake is also particularly delicious. Very good challah. The service is very friendly, and very efficient. I used to pick up things on the way to work in the morning, when I worked nearby, and you can get in and out rather fast, which counts by me. Some of the smaller individual pastries are a bit sweet for my personal taste. I am not crazy about the Hamentaschen, bc they also tend to be a tad overly sweet, and the texture of these could be a bit moister, ideally. All in all, though, this is a place worth coming to from even the far reaches of the Philadelphia area if you have yet to try their bagels. They are on another plane from the typical bagel of the 21rst century, at least for Philadelphia. read more
