What an absolutely disappointing breakfast for my whole family. We ordered breakfast bagels like we always do for pick up. Came home to cold meat sandwiches. Cold meat on an untoasted bagel and cold cheese. WTF is this? I've never been so disappointed in a breakfast. These were supposed to be toasted bagels with warm egg and melted cheese, wrapped in foil to stay warm. Instead we got nothing as ordered. This however isn't the first time. The people working here are never trained and on the same page. I can place the same order 10 times and get it different at least 7/10. In an effort to get to some of the places that are not in my firmly established rotation, I made a trip to Barry Bagels on Dussel. I've been eating Barry's about 40 years going back to the Sylvania store. This visit receives a generous three stars, was considering two. First issue is the online ordering. Pickup time defaults to 20 or 25 minutes, which is too long. Any chinese takeout usually quotes 15 minutes or 20 if they're slammed. Unless it's lunch rush, a bagel and baked potato should not take 25 minutes to prepare. Tweak the website programming. Since my order was just starting to be prepared after arriving, I had time to sit and look around the dining area. I rejected four dirty tables on the way to finding one clean one at which to wait. There were sesame seeds on seats, pickles, lettuce, and crumbs on table tops, and part of a cookie and chips on the floor. I know it was close to closing, but the place was a mess. Not quite filthy but unclean. With six employees behind the counter, is it anyone's job do a mid-shift tidy? The food tasted fine. The turkey everything bagel was a little dry, but had good flavor. It looked like a standard 4oz portion of meat. Extra meat costs $4.50 I'm subtracting a star for the teeny tiny baker (baked potato). I haven't been for about a year and a half, but the size of the potato was noticeably smaller. For decades, Barry's was known for their amazing, oversized potatoes piled with toppings - see the #6 with cheese review on that video site. I remember them being giant, usually too big to finish. Today, for $8.60, I received what can only be described as regular restaurant size potato. Only it wasn't as good. It was light on the cheese and bacon toppings, but had a lot of sour cream. For comparison, a loaded, buttered and salted shell baked potato at Outback costs a very reasonable $3.99 So Barry's has a few kinks to work out. This is purely constructive criticism as I like the place and want to see them do well. read more

I already reviewed the Toledo location and should have reviewed this as well. I've borrowed a bit from my other review. As a New Yorker, this is the closest I've gotten to a real bagel place outside the New York area. The bagels are close. First, many of the locals pronounce it "baggle," which is wrong. The bagels are thick and fluffy. They are chewy like bagels are supposed to be. The only two drawbacks are that the bagels are a little too chewy and that their flavors are weird. They have cinnamon vanilla or raisin, but no cinnamon raisin. There is no plain egg. The only egg has poppy seeds. The everything is very good. The pumpernickel is good if you like that. The asiago cheese is very nice and doesn't leave seeds on your teeth. I've eaten many breakfasts here. The cream cheese is very good. It's whipped and light. The egg sandwiches are just good. I appreciate that they use deli ham if you request ham. But there's no grill here. In New York, they'd grill it fresh. All the eggs are cooked in the microwave. On the other hand, the eggs are beaten fresh right in front of you, so it's not a pre-made egg patty like you get at Subway. The cold cuts are great. Thin sliced, fresh deli flavor. Boar's Head! So much better than the stuff I usually get around here. I am ambivalent about the tuna and chicken salads, though. The toppings they put on the sandwiches is top notch. Big fresh leafy lettuce. Flavorful onions. Real horseradish. The pickles they put on the side are limp kosher dills, just like home. That's a warning to native Ohioans, who take pickles seriously. They just recently switched to cardboard takeout shells, which are more eco-friendly than the old plastic ones. The soups are good, but not special. Except the matzo ball. Ooh a New York classic! The service is very fast and efficient. I was worried that I wouldn't have time to stop here before work, but parking, walking in and ordering is faster than fast food drive thru breakfast. I appreciate that. The environment is great. In the morning, there's always a table of late middle aged men grumbling good naturedly to each other. The workers are a mix between friendly professionals and eager teens. The tables are pretty comfortable if you want to read over breakfast. Just one tip, if you a bagel with lox, you have to specifically request open face! In New York, the bagels would be four stars. Great service, great deli meats, great cream cheese are five stars anywhere. The bagels are the closest to New York bagels I've had outside the New York area and that makes a Toledo five. I will eat breakfast here every day that time and budget allow. read more

Bagels are out of this world BUT someone in the organization decided not to let you see your sandwich being made. When you order a roast beef on an everything bagel with cream cheese; banana papers, onion, green peppers, lettuce, and pickle, how is some 18-23 year going to remember that? I get that there are crappy customers that made them implement this rule, BUT my families bagel has been goofed up the past 3 times.u. UPDATE owner contacted me same day. Bagels...Yes, with a resounding affirmation. Fresh, chewy, great variety of flavors. Toppings...Yes, with another affirmation Variety of cream cheeses and blends and "inserts" from eggs to lox to...you just gotta check the board. I was especially impressed with the Southwest Jalapeño (Neuchfatel) with its beautiful, spicy chunks of peppers. Five Stars for its creaminess, flavor, heat, spices. Service....young staff needs to spend a bit less time socializing and a little more time being attentive to customers. (One young lady did step up when she saw a lapse in her coworkers service. All-in-All a great way to start my day. And, a great place to stop in for a quick bit and good coffee just about anytime (early morning to mid-afternoon.) read more

Bagel was toasted for like 2 seconds because they didn't care at all. Then put more cream cheese on the bagel than I have ever seen in my life. I am about to review my favorite takeout place ever. Barry bagels was my childhood and never fails to disappoint me. They always have great food and friendly workers. I usually order the honey roasted turkey and macaroni salad. Its rare, but sometimes if you door dash they may mess up your meat. (like i said rare, happened to me once.) I love bagels but they are so high in calories I don't eat them often. When I was a caterer we would get these delivered fresh and still warm in the morning. Today I had a hankering and gave into it. I have had everyone of their flavors because as I said we used them in our catering. Their vanilla cinnamon and their everything bagel are so freaking good 100% worth the calories! I can't choose between the two. The salt on the everything bagel is perfect and the sweet vanilla cinnamon has the best chewy texture. Best bagels around, clean nice place. read more

I am torn about what to rate this place... 1 - I have had some things that I really liked, 2 - I've had some things that are just ok, 3 - the prices are kind of high. On my last visit I paid not quite $9.00 for a regular bagel sandwich with turkey on it, and a bottled water. The sandwich was very good, but I wasn't full afterwards. I ordered a bowl of noodle soup, which was waaaay too expensive for the size of the "bowl", and she kind of had to scrape the bottom of the container in effort to get me a sufficient amount. Haha. I went in yesterday afternoon and saw two employees with their masks not covering their nose. Both employees (one female and one male) were working with slicing and packaging up deli meats. I understand that masks can and do slip down at times, but they should be completely secured prior to handling food. read more

Bagels are my favorite breakfast so I get them whenever I can find a specialty shop. It would be unfair to compare Barry Bagels to, say Einstein Brothers because the latter is just about the best. But even compared to a mom-and-pop joint, Barry Bagels is not only just average but also overpriced. The staff is super friendly and the place is well lit, but the bagels aren't especially super fresh and the menu lacks imagination. I was also turned off by the employees not wearing their masks correctly. It's sloppy, and against current regulations. They should be used to them by now. I saw in another review in which a family was turned away for not wearing masks. I'm glad that you did that. As a nurse, I know that there are no conditions that warrant not wearing a mask. But when your nose sticks out of a mask, you're essentially not wearing one. One employee's face was sticking entirely out. Be consistent. I didn't like the veggie cream cheese. Not very flavorful. The jalapeño cheese bagels were disappointing, and not flavorful either. I do love the Everything bagels. I was disappointed that they put the dozen Everything bagels on top of the dozen jalapeño cheese bagels. The topping of the everything bagels sifted down onto the jalapeño bagels, so I had to brush them off. The bagels were damp, so that was difficult to do. You'd think they would take that into account. The responses and unprofessional attitude from the manager in the other reviews show why Barry Bagels has gone downhill. I'm sure there is a Management 101 course that you could send your managers. read more

Lox was not toasted and only had cream cheese & lox, no capers or tomatoes that typically come with a lox, but they ask if you want to add anything so they may have those options. The bagels are delicious but the service is horrible. There are always a lot of people behind the counter but they never make eye contact and their service once they do look at you in subpar. I ordered online, went to pick up my order they couldn't find the order I placed. When they finally did locate it, some of the bagels were already out. They never offered any service to make up for their mistake. Then they didn't include my cream cheese in my order. I called when I got home and they simply said " Yeah we noticed it was still here. You can come back and get it." When I told them I live a half hour away, they said, well you can come back tomorrow then. No spookily or offer of a gift card or anything to make up for it. They never took the pound of cream cheese I didn't pick up off my bill either. Today I placed an order over the phone. I ordered a dozen bagels plus cream cheese and also a bagel sandwich with a pickle for my lunch. I arrived back at my office and no pickle with my sandwich. Surprised to find a deli in this neighborhood. Shared a bagel with lox and a pastrami sandwich. Both of their products (lox and pastrami) were pre-cut. The lox was a cold clump, put on the bagel. The young girl didn't think to peel the slices apart. The pastrami was microwaved first. It was then hand shredded and put on the rye bread. Not any way I have ever had either one. I used to get an Eggel about once a week from this location or others. Definitely one of my favorite sandwiches to have! However, I hadn't been in a few months and stopped by to get my usual, an egg, bacon, and pepper jack cheese Eggel on everything. I was disappointed to see that they no longer use real egg, but instead have replaced with liquid egg/citric acid. I'm sure this was a cost saving move, as I have too made this move when ordering for a business I run, but the quality just goes down along with the price. Needless to say, the added cost associated with real egg does make a difference; a reason that my company is back to cracking 200 eggs a day.
