I've been here 4 times and Service and Ambiance are very good. Today was the first time I ordered their Steak Grilled Quesadilla and added Carne Asada, what a rip off! It wasn't even your traditional shaped folded one like you see at all Mexican food places . The price was $8.75 and $9 to add Carne Asada. I received 3 rolled tortillas which looked liked like Taquitos but not deep fried . I was lucky to have 2 pieces of Asada in each one! They should be ashamed to serve a product for that price. Great decor and good food is what makes this place shine. We came here for lunch and had the good fortune of arriving early enough that we beat the large lunch crowd. The restaurant has a nice selection of souvenirs featuring their name, such as mugs, shirts, and hats, all with cool designs. The food was good, but service could be a little slow, and they didn't come around to pick up empty plates, which made for a lot of table clutter. I had the Aztecs Enchiladas which had tender beef short rib, covered in a tomatillo sauce, diced onions, cilantro, and creama fresca. Next to it was aside of black beans and calabacita. Nothing to rave about and the enchiladas were delicious but not spectacular. My wife had the Pollo A La Parilla which had two seasoned grilled chicken breast, green hole strips, rice and calabacita. The only wish was that the rajas came as rajas con queso instead of just rajas. Overall this was a decent place to come and eat. TACOS, ahhhh yeah. And good ones, too! I knocked off a star because one of our tacos was cold and a second one was not the taco we ordered, but we devoured those tasty little babies anyway. The quality and flavor of all three tacos we tried was on point. The margaritas are excellent too, and the drink and food menu is HUGE. There's something for everyone. If you can't find something you like, then you obviously just don't like Mexican food. I love the layout and huge bar area. Great patio, too! They also have an enormous party room for special events, and there are TVs in the bar and also the party room. Bartender was also really friendly. Overall my first experience here was pretty good. It's January 1st and while many restaurants are closed for the holiday, this one was hoppin' Very clean and appealing on the inside. Not the funky serapes, maracas and sombreros splashed around. This was a place where decor was thoughtfully planned It feels like a classy upscale dining establishment and it is. Our server, Joseph, was pleasant and greeted us with a genuine smile. He discussed some of his favorites on the menu and we both ordered one of his recommendations: Suizas Enchiladas which are tender pulled chicken and creamy Oaxaca cheese topped with homemade jalapeño tomatillo sauce, chorizo, diced red onions, fresh cilantro and crema fresca. They arrived and we're plated beautifully. Mine were hot, but my wife's were luke warm. Cute restaurant, very friendly service and the food is incredible. I've only been to Barrio Queen a few times but it truly seems the food is better every time. Came here for lunch with my colleagues and our eyes were way too big for our stomachs, but we had the best experience! We started with the table side guacamole, made with super fresh ingredients and topped with pomegranate seeds. The pop of juice from the pomegranate complements the guac perfectly! We also tried the Queso Fundido, the meltiest cheese topped with roasted peppers. So good!! Not to mention their homemade chips and fresh salsa. Everything was great! We all had our eyes on the carnitas, but wanted to sample the tacos too, so naturally we ordered both! We sampled the tacos- fried shrimp and quesabarria. Holy tacos, Batman! The quesabarria was awesome- tender short ribs with melty Oxaxacan cheese, onion and cilantro for bite, and the barria au jus. You can't make a more perfect bite! The carnitas were also tender, and served with black beans and rojo sauce. I loved the sauce, it reminded me of mole- really good! The carnitas were served with rice and a squash, corn and bell pepper mixture. Of course we needed several boxes to-go but happily took everything we didn't finish home for later. I can't leave out the service. Not only were we seated immediately (on a Friday afternoon), but our server was great! He was super friendly and came by with drink refills without us asking. He cleared our mountain of plates as we worked through them, so we had more room. I have to say, each time I've been to Barrio Queen, I've had awesome service. Omg! what has happened to this restaurant...my daughter and I went here tonight..I order the 3 tacos side of beans and rice my meal was cold all the tacos the rice was the old dry rice and refried beans was dried old beans. Tonight we went to a New Mexican restaurant m, Barrio Queen. I am struggling with giving this a 5 star rating, but in the end the service we received was really top notch. I will admit to being a chip and salsa person and their salsa was very good chips, not so much. I prefer Manuel's here in Phoenix. We had the guacamole made at our table that was outstanding. It was chunky and they add pomegranate seeds. Game changer to be honest. I really did not care for their rib burrito just seemed to miss with me. My brother happily took it home. Now to get to what my brother, his friend and my son loved. The tequila. Need I say more? They said it was so smooth and enjoyable. We did not get a dessert everyone was stuffed. Arrowhead Location, right off Bell road you can't miss it. Large updated restaurant, used to be another restaurant but completely re-done. Very clean, large dining area with seating inside and outside. Bar, love the bar a ton of different Tequillas to chose from, super ice cold adult beverages. Food, ordered the "Chili Relleno de Vegetables" when it says vegetables, it means a ton, it was pretty good but what I envisioned and small amounts of cheese. I will try another dish at this restaurant as I mentally was not prepared but such a traditional difference. My brother and I decided to check out Barrio Queen for lunch as neither of us have been. The wait was about 30 minutes and they text you when ready. We got patio seating and we given menus. It took a bit for someone to grab our drink order but they were pretty busy. The menu is pretty big and there's something for every palate. I chose the protein bowl which had Romain, chicken and other goodies topped with an egg. It was delicious!! My brother got the cochinita pibil and it was delicious as well. We saw a table next to us getting the guacamole made table side and we will try that next time. Definitely a place that surprised me as I am pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food as I can make some pretty good dishes at home. First time here, and was pretty impressed! We met here for a work lunch last week and it was pretty darn solid. Chips and salsa were good, freshly fried chips, thicker, a bit greasy, but tasty. Good salsa, a little on the watery side. I went with Mole Enchiladas as my entrée. It came with 3 enchiladas, all with different fillings and mole sauces. Haven't had much mole in my life, but of the few times I've had it, this was probably the best I've had. The entrée came with black beans topped with cotija cheese, and a mixed grilled vegetable side. All in all, it was a solid lunch! Service was friendly, albeit a tad slow. Nothing too major though. Barrio Queen is a local chain of around half a dozen Southern Style Mexican restaurants in Arizona. James Beard Nominated chef Silvana Salcido Esparza is no longer connected to these restaurants but used to work for this company and did contribute some of her famous recipes including guacamole, cohinita pibil and chile en nogada to the menu. She also contributed employees that worked for her. This is a large beautiful restaurant (Glendale location at Arrowhead Mall) with two bars, a few dining rooms and patios. It's a very busy restaurant. We arrived at four hoping to beat the crowd but it already was a twenty five minute wait for a patio seat. We tried two margaritas while we were waiting. My husband had a house margarita and I had the El Don margarita. The house margarita tasted very flat after the El Don. I do have to say the El Don was excellent and very strong. Around twenty five minutes later we were seated in the patio. Soon complimentary chips and salsa arrives. They are both very good. Chips are fresh made and hot and salsa is very mild but flavorful. I ordered the pescado del barrio (Mexican sea bass). In reasonable time it arrives. The fish is dry on one side but perfectly cooked on the other side (no big deal...OK) I notice my plate is missing the corn tortillas....(ugh.....but I don't need them because I ate a few chips earlier and my plate has more rice on it than I can eat) Soon someone (perhaps a manager?) walks by and asks how everything is...My husband says right away that my plate was missing the corn tortillas. I guess before he had a chance to offer me tortillas I say that I don't need them and he walks off. I'm getting into my plate now and I wonder why my fish is so dry? I'm half crocked from the strong margarita and forgot that my fish is suppose to come with a garlic cilantro white wine butter sauce. Well I didn't get that either... That means that the server was untrained and has no idea that my plate should come with tortillas and sauce. That also means that management doesn't train the servers. That also means that this can happen to anyone. Three stars means ok on Yelp. To me three stars means that I have some reservations. My plate served to me was missing sauce and tortillas.....You'd be disappointed too! *********** As a slight update I was contacted by management that were very apologetic. I really wanted to love this place. But if you love some bomb chips and salsa, come here asap. It was so good I probably would come back here to fill up on chips and salsa and a bunch of drinks. Yum. The tacos were decent, but not my favorite. They weren't "bad" at all, I guess it just didn't live up to my expectations. I'm not sure if it was just an "off day" or what, but they were okay. I don't even remember what I got because it wasn't like, whoa. The mango agua fresca was super good. I had 2 of them. So tasty. Definitely come here for this. I can't remember her name but she was very attentive and was by herself and made sure we were all good! For appetizers we got queso finish, shrimp ceviche, and the guacamole. All were very good but especially the guacamole that they make table side. It has pomegranate seeds and it makes it that much better! This was a lunch visit. The staff was great. Happy and helpful. The food was super flavorful. The carne asada burrito at $17 is a bit much but the flavor and atmosphere pay for the rest. The Pork Chili Rojo was another wonderful flavor filled plate. The meat was marinated in the sauce so it was juicy. The Chorizo beans are mild at best with chorizo and the rice is bit bland. Beautiful setup and paintings on the walls. Overall, a great restaurant and we will return. read more

The Scottsdale location is so much better than Glendale. This location is fairly new and needs lots of improvements. We ordered the Trio and Chicken fajitas and everything came out burned...even the tortillas. Finished our drinks and was never asked if we wanted another. Arizona Barrio (Green chili pork) is fantastic!!! The best green chili pork burrito I've ever tasted. I crave it and have literally been back numerous times just for that burrito. Went here with a friend for happy hour n tacos for the first time on Tuesday the service was terrible. Every time we wanted something we had to flag down the bartender. No happy hour specials were mentioned we were handed 4 different menus and he walked away. When shift change came the 1st bartender didn't even let anyone know he was leaving maybe he went on break maybe he went home who knows. We ordered from the 2nd bartender who came on we had to flag her down as well, she never once had a smile or introduced herself, no one acted like they cared we were even there. The Tacos were small and they were not warm. Didn't dare send them back because we may not see the bartender again for a few. It's sad to spend hard earned money on mediocre food at best and terrible service. You go out to eat for the experience. Our bill was 60.00 for happy hour that's not cheap we had to ask all the questions and that's when you could get someone to pay attention to you! I left a tip according to the service (which wasn't my best) but honestly this is a service industry if you suck your tip is going to reflect it. This place should work on the friendliness of the staff. I personally will not go back. There are better places to spend my time and money! read more

Carlos, our waiter is very knowledgeable about the menu and gives mouth watering descriptions of the entrees! We're so grateful that the hostess highly recommended the guacamole. Mixed by Carlos, table side, on a rolling car with about 6 ingredients, including pomegranate, delicious! Our meals were also outstanding. I had the Carnitas Michoacánas and my companion had the item just below it on the menu, with the word Pibil in it. The Pibil was sweeter, in a BBQ sort of way. The rice was deliciously fluffy and the black beans full of flavor. We will be back for many more entrees. However, we will not be ordering cocktails. I wanted soup so I ordered a bowl of Caldo Tlalpeno. It was packed with chucks of chicken breast, veggies, rice in a rich savory broth topped with avocados, cilantro and spicy tortilla strips. Both my spouse and I settled on enchiladas pollo suisas made with 3 corn tortillas and drizzled with tomatillo sauce and stripes of fresh crema. They also were sprinkled with bits of chorizo and fresh cilantro and chopped onion. My sides included refried beans and Spanish rice with corn kernels; he had the rice and chipotle ( yes, chipotle ) mashed potatoes. The plates arrived simultaneously but how the spouse's plate came out piping hot and mine was room temperature surprised me. I had to send mine back, and though it returned warmed and the beans this time had cojita cheese on top, the food still lacked warmth. For those tired of Tex-Mex fare, Barrio Queen is a great option. The restaurant was clean and appealing with well-appointed Spanish-style decore, and our server was spot on; however, I'm not fond of the sour-like tomatillo taste, and the snafu of less-than-hot food made my visit not as appetizing as my spouse's. The enchiladas were delicious, I have not had this style before and was pleasantly surprised with the generous amount of crab and shrimp. I do recommend having it with a lemon or lime. YUM! I've been to the Arrowhead, Desert Ridge, and Old Towne locations and all have been delicious. Start with the table-side guac. I don't love pomegranate seeds in mine, but always load up on onions, cilantro, and lime. The salsa is delicious too with super addicting chips... don't get full on this though because your entree will be well worth the space in your tummy! My favorite entree is the three quesabirra tacos with the au jus. Every single bite is the best bite until it's over. I've also had the carne asada and al pastor tacos, and used to get one of each but realized I love the quesabirra the best. My husband likes to get the trio of enchiladas with a side of beans and calabacitas. I am not a fan of the black mole (he loves it) but the red and green moles are really good!
