First, I will start by saying that I was really looking forward to the opening of this place. Haverhill is in need of new restaurants. They weren't taking reservations or call ahead so the wait time ended up being about 45 minutes, which isn't terrible on a Friday evening but not great for the area. There aren't any other bars within walking distance to grab a drink while you wait so it made the wait go by extra slow. They did however have games of corn hole going on to pass the time. The drinks were great. The appetizer, the tres amigos, is a three part appetizer where you can choose a salsa, queso, and guacamole. For $15, it was a little steep for just an app. Especially when other restaurants will give chips and salsa for no charge. We decided to do the build your own tacos. We did a combination of shrimp, steak, chicken, and fish so that we could try the different kinds. Unfortunately, the tacos came to the table cold. This was a big turn off since no one really wants cold meat. The wait staff and manager were apologetic and eager to make them again for us but even the second time around they were still on the cool side. I still appreciated their efforts. I give 4 stars for the drinks, 3 stars for the service, 2 stars for the ambiance, and 2 stars for the food. I probably won't go back but not the worst I've ever had. read more

This place is very hit or miss. Ordering online, sometimes the food is perfect but other times it's cold or they leave an ingredient on that we asked to remove due to a dietary reason. Sometimes the staff is very friendly, other times they're rude. Dining in person the wait staff is either very attentive or makes you sit at the table for 20 minutes before ordering drinks. I didn't see Haverhill on your list for a little while from your website but that's expected due to opening time in COVID-19. I was so excited to get our waitress Emma! She made our drinks at the bar, took our orders, but went above and beyond to tell us, as first timers what she personally likes. You don't get that everywhere, so thank you! I have frequented Barrio many times and I can honestly say it gets worse each time I go. Today was no different. There was 1 server for the whole restaurant. Two of the shrimp tacos ordered came without shrimp. The specialty 'Hot as cluck taco' came with a tiny chicken tender on top of a pile of cole slaw, and a few cold macaroni noodles on the bottom. The tostada was cold, piled high with sloppy cream, little to no guac, and an egg that was so over cooked, It could have been used as a novelty egg in a child's play kitchen. The El jefe loco taco was assembled so poorly that I couldn't even pick it up to eat it. When the manager, or whomever came over to ask how our food was, we told him about everything that was wrong. He said he would mention it to the server, however we were still charged for all the items that we didn't even touch. The only reason I'm giving 1 star is because the chips were fresh, and the Mac queso dip was bomb. I will not be returning. read more

Three stars for the atmosphere, decor & chorizo queso. With a party of six we ordered a total of 13 tacos with a few drinks. So we had a variety of tacos, we ordered some from the build your own tacos and also from the Jefe Specials. Overall the meats were too salty and they were cold. The shrimp taco, had to actually use the fork to find the tiny shrimps. The margaritas were too sweet. We also got the guacamole, queso blanco, & chorizo queso (which we all greed) was the best. My take is, if all you are offering are tacos on your menu, it has to be an amazing experience to say, "wow, awesome tacos, will definitely be back." Came here last night for dinner with my family and the experience was ruined due to whatever girl they had food running last night. Every time she approached our table she had an extreme attitude for no reason. My family hadn't realized you're supposed to put names at the top of the sheets, our fault yes, but to stand there saying "no names on any of these???? come on guys". Checked this spot out with a few friends, This place was a one of a kind. First off the drinks were very fresh and had plenty of options of tequila, My personal favorite is clase azul which they have! Few of my friends tried out a few of the cocktails which they all enjoyed and raved of. The service was very fast and very on top of things from the host to our server and wait staff, I never had to ask for a refill or look for my server as they took good care of us on a very busy evening from what it looked like. The food was the best part. We created our own tacos, I had the Short Rib and Spiced Ground both were outstanding, I tried the stoner shell which was 5 stars alone! Hired Barrio to cater our daughters wedding and we were extremely disappointed. Told them we were having 80 people when actually only around 70 showed up. 3/4 of the guests ate then we ran out of food. You can only imagine how we felt as the parents of the bride . Tried to order from this restaurant twice. When we first called, we were told we could only get the build your own taco kit (not indicated on their site). Then they changed their mind and said that we could put an order through on the website (there isn't an option to order on the website, they were surprised). So, we all figured out what options we'd like from the kits (4 of us so had to discuss) and called back. Then, they said they don't do pick up. When we asked why they have a pick up order option on their menu and why they didn't tell us that when we first called they said they don't do pick up orders between 6-8 (also not on their website). Then, for some reason, we were transferred to someone else who said the kitchen was too busy (during Covid?) to do pick up orders. It would have been hilarious if we all weren't so hungry! read more

I am divided. So much to like, so much could be improved. First, the food hits the spot. Second, the margaritas were excellent. Third, they have a "Super Barrio" t-shirt for purchase and the kids think that sets the place apart from anywhere else. My concerns, Barrio makes you put in a hell of a lot of work to order a taco. There are about 500 different combo selections and you have to fill out your own order like a crossword puzzle. But if you mix and match the right combo, you get a hell of a taco. And last, the scan codes on the table to bring up the drink menu on your phone? I don't get this reliance of our technology. Why leave the house to detach from gadgets only to have to pull out your device to stick you face back down into your phone like a robotic drone just to look at a menu. Defeats the purpose in my eyes. But I guess I am just an American that hasn't let the body snatchers brainwash me to be "compliant" yet on how Big Tech is best for me. Looking around the restaurant to see everyone's face in their phone is not a goal any establishment should set out to encourage. This place was so disappointing! We ordered a bunch of Tacos from Barrio on Doordash. They were all on corn tortillas, which were soggy and completely disintegrated when you tried to pick them up. The Barrio sauce was so spicy, it completely overpowered the tacos. The fillings were skimpy and bland, especially the fish and shrimp tacos. So sad! Food here is amazing. The ingredients in the tacos is always high quality and the seasoning and sauces are on point. Honestly some of the best tacos you can get in the northeast. The bad though, and can be really frustrating...this establishment is super inconsistent both in service and food. Like I said the quality of the ingredients is always quality, but the construction of the Tacos can vary, wildly. Sometimes the tacos are built with an even layer of each ingredient, other times you'll get half a pound of meat with little pico or veg and frequently you'll get just a sprinkle of meat and it'll be loaded with veg. Also the service, I'm not sure if it's a training issue, or what. Some servers are quick and attentive while others are just flat out dumb. There's no way to sugar coat it. Tonight we had a server forget to bring us the starter chips and salsa, then forgot our appetizers, and never came to check on our drinks. After the first mistake(which we never even mentioned) she just completely avoided us and other servers brought out our appetizers and new drinks. Our initial server was a hot mess and she didn't seem very well trained at all. The new server ended up comping our apps, which was very nice. This place has the ability and quality of food to be a 5 star establishment if they could just get the front and back ends of the house on the same page. As it stands the organization is just a cluster f*ck for the most part. 60-75% of the time it's stellar, but when it's bad, it's real bad. Wish I could rate it higher, I really want to, the food is generally so good we come here frequently even though the experience can be a bit of a roll of the dice. read more

I went here for the first time with my boyfriend and two friend last night. I happen to be from out of town while the 3 of them are from Massachusetts. They asked for our IDs because we are all young. Occasionally being from out of state, I get my ID taken back and looked at by the manager, but never have I been denied because I am 22. The server came back and apologized that they did not believe my ID was real. However, being almost 23 I said I had a student ID from where I graduated college with my birthday and I could get pictures of my birth certificate and passport if they needed from my parents who I was calling. The server said she would send over the manager. An older women with short brown straight hair who goes by "Meg" came over and immediately told me she is not accepting my ID as she believes it's peeling on the top. She tried to show me where but I did not at all understand what she was talking about. I have used this ID for years and never had a problem with it. I believe Meg could be a very valuable part of this team but she was extremely rude and unprofessional towards me. She was treating me like a child and would not let me show her anything else. I tried to hand her my student ID that had my birthday on it, I tried showing her my expired ID from my 17 year old license, I tried showing her pictures of my nursing license and graduation photos, all of which she would not give me a chance. I understand she is trying to do her job but she was extremely unprofessional and made my experience extremely unenjoyable. Luckily, another manager who was younger with blonde hair who goes by "Kate" came over. I tried explaining everything to Kate. Showering her all my evidence. She eventually took back my ID and stated the scanner "started to work again" then came back a few minutes later and offered me a drink. Kate was understanding and worked with me. Meg never once came by to apologize for how she treated us. As a customer I am giving my money to the restaurant and feel that I at the least deserved an apology. I am a nurse and I take fault for many things the doctors do. I always apologize even for things that were mistakes. The least she could of done was come apologize to me. Meg could've been more understanding and at least attempt to hear my side of the situation to work things out but it appeared she was more interested in the power trip of denying a person drinks. She did not listen to any of the points my friends and I made to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that I was of age and instead was hung up on the fact that she thought the ID was fake. This should be a lesson in customer service and I hope she doesn't train any other employees to behave this way. My server was good. I did not tip her at all based on this situation. I was also a server so I know how the kitchen and management can get in the way of a servers job. I don't know if I ever want to come back because I truly had an awful experience with Meg which is very disappointing because the food was good! read more

Unreliable. The first time we ordered the food was pretty tasty and a good temperature. The corn queso was not good however. The corn that was sprinkled on top tasted like it had been tossed in generic taco seasoning. The second time we ordered, my cilantro rice bowl came cold, like they just took it out of the fridge cold, the bottom of the bowl was cold to touch. . I also ordered the bowl with pulled pork and thick cut bacon. They forgot the pulled pork, and the bacon was cold and stuck together, like it was pulled out of a pan of previously cooked bacon that was in the fridge and it wasn't thick cut by any means. I ordered the pineapple quac with chips as well. The quac really had no taste and there was a red sauce sprinkled over the pineapple on top and, yet again, tasted like some cheap, generic taco seasoning. I really wanted to like this place but I'm pretty sure I'm done trying. The serving are pretty small as well. $2 for about 2 tablespoons of sour cream and the $2 side of rice is literally in a condiment cup. read more

This was my first time here with my mom. I had talked about this place for a while now to her. I had been there with my friends before and my mom was so excited to come. We got there and we had Stone as our server and words can not describe the AMAZING experience we had! I do not write reviews on yelp but he FULLY deserves one. He was SO welcoming, friendly and kind. He took the time to walk my mom through the process of the building your own taco. He was so kind to me and her and was the best server I have had in years. As someone who IS a server myself, he inspired me to do better at my job. He was consistent and patient and did everything in his power to make sure we had the BEST time at Barrio. I will definitely be back to Barrio and will only and forever be requesting Stone as our server. He was so personable and kind I wouldn't ask for any more in a server. I wish I could give more than 5 starts for him!!! read more
