My mother was visiting from out of town, and she loves fried fish. During her last visit, I took her to a place that had good fried fish, but she mentioned that she wished it had been served with tostones (fried plantains) like they do in the Dominican Republic. Later, I remembered that I had visited Tekila's before COVID and that someone in my party had ordered fried fish with tostones. I decided this would be the perfect place to bring her. The restaurant is conveniently located right off the highway and has ample parking. When we walked in at 6:00 PM, we were surprised to find the place completely empty. I wondered if I had misread their hours, but a staff member soon came out, informed us they were open, and told us we could sit wherever we liked. One of the first things that stood out to me was that, although the restaurant advertises authentic Mexican cuisine with a Caribbean twist, the atmosphere felt more Dominican than Mexican. From the large poster featuring famous Dominicans to the overall vibe, I assumed that was the "Caribbean twist." I also noticed that roughly one-fifth of the restaurant was occupied by band equipment and a stage. When I asked our server about it, she explained that the owner is a musician and has a band that performs there a couple of nights each week. At that point, I began to think the restaurant's primary focus might be more of a bar or nightlife crowd. To start, we ordered a house margarita and a beer. Both were refreshing on a hot day. Looking over the menu, I was pleased to see three fish dishes named after places in the Dominican Republic, so I thought we were in for a treat. My mother ordered the Pescado Boca Chica, described as fried snapper served with tostones and salad. I chose the Pescado Samaná, named after an area in the Dominican Republic known for its coconut-based sauces. I also asked about the rice and beans and was told they were prepared Dominican-style. When our meals arrived, I was surprised by the portion sizes. The fish did not look particularly large, even though my mother's fish was listed on the bill as a large portion for $34.99. It also didn't have any salad dressing. My own dish appeared sad-looking, and at $36.99, I found it overpriced. The coconut sauce was decent, but I wouldn't call it delicious. The side dishes were also quite small. Overall, the food tasted okay, but for a total of $100.56 before tip, I did not feel it offered good value. The service was good, and we tipped 20% based on the total bill. I should also note that the house margarita was listed on the menu at $12, but I was charged $15. I chose not to mention it to the server and simply let it go. When I asked my mother how she would rate the experience, she gave it a 2 out of 5. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5 because there were some positive aspects, including the cleanliness of the place and service. I must say I used to go there a couple of years back before Covid food was excellent. I don't know if they changed the Cooke, but I ordered a churrasco the wait trust asked me what kind of Cuttie was interested in regular or premium cut. I think she told me it was a five dollar difference I went with the premium cut as to see how good was it if it was different to my understanding, but at the end of the day, I felt that the meat wasn't all that great quality. I should've seen a little bit of more charred as well on the meat as I feel they lost their touch. Ambience is very not so great. I have only gone there twice , and both times for karaoke. The first time was okay the people seemed very inviting and gave me a warm Round of Applause . The second time I went started off similarly but the DJ who couldn't speak English first gets the song wrong that I chose which was very strange to me. I literally texted him the song with the name spelled out so I don't understand how we could have possibly typed the wrong song. Then after I do that song and get another warm round of applause, he skips me and the guy that was going after me is all of a sudden singing. I texted the guy like six songs. So I put my hands up in shrugging him saying what happened and he just starts laughing. I can't tell what he's saying everyone's laughing and they're all pointing at me and I said is this a joke? And someone says oh I don't know I'll ask him. So finally I'm going up and during the song he pretends to accidentally lower the window on his computer and the words disappear so at this point I'm thinking this guy is literally messing with me this isn't all accidents. And then on top of that while I'm singing the song He's talking in the background on his own microphone. So he was extremely rude and the staff seemed to be completely unaware and I will never go back there as long as he is djing. If they replace the ​ I might go back there but I will not be going back there as long as he is there. Somewhere within my chef boyardee lurks the Beef Enchilada I ordered. Otherwise, it wasn't bad because places I have been to have 2, but Tekila's had 3 in there. I enjoyed the Margaritas more than the dishes. They are decently big and definitely pack a punch. As for precautions, staff wear masks, limited capacity for indoor dining and outside. Definitely a hidden gem but based on the videos on the wall it's not child friendly. Based on the live band that was extremely loud I didn't want to stay any longer. Good music though! Now the food, our server was a young and very informative. I wanted a drink and a fajita burrito. Both were satisfied but the margarita was somewhat disappointing the flavor was off. The burrito was a meal for two! Absolutely delicious!!! My wife had a steak special which was "cooked to order", she asked if it could be cooked medium rare and it came out well. She ate it anyway as the band was setting up. The place was empty and even with the music which should bring more people, it stayed empty. The service is great ... the camaron ceviche was amazing, presentation was great. The margarita was VERY strong but then my husband ordered a Fajita maya (shrimp, chicken and steak) the steak tasted old it was about 5 mins from going bad. I ordered tacos carne asada and it wasn't carne asada it was beef chunks and it was so rubbery and hard I gave it back and even the waiter said he tasted it and it was hard to chew. Then he changed it for chicken when we asked for the bill we realized that they charged us for the tacos i did not eat and also that the tip (18%) was already included. Tekila's opened about six weeks ago and was transformed from a Mediterranean restaurant (formerly Mogador) into a Mexican restaurant under the same ownership. This casual restaurant and bar was redone which has colorful painted walls, a bar area/lounge section and a dining room section with hardwood floors and table seating. There's also a big party table with low cushioned seating in the dining room. After viewing the Mogador/Tekila's FB page with the posted appetizing food photos, I decided to stop in here for Saturday night dinner. The place was fairly busy around 8PM and I was seated after a 2 minute wait (clear a table) and given a menu. Late 80s and early 90s music was being played over the speakers and eventually heard some Mexican music. The menu offerings include typical Mexican fare including tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, salads, chicken tortilla soup, and desserts as well as house specialties such as steaks, carnitas, and fajita pasta. Most dinner entrees priced $8.99-$15.99. A kids menu is available which offers chicken tenders & fries, cheese pizza, and more. The bar offers beer, cocktails, margaritas, martinis, and "tekilas." I was given a basket of chips and salsa to start things off. For the most part, the chips were warm and crispy, but there were a few chewy chips in the mix. The salsa was not thick at all, but more like a medium spicy tomato sauce. For dinner, I ordered the Steak Fajita Tekila's ($10.99 plus tax)., which was served on a hot skillet (not served sizzling) with marinated steak, green & red peppers, & red onions and a side of shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream dressing, 3 hot soft flour tortillas, and a bowl of Mexican rice on the side. The steak, peppers, & onions was cooked and smothered in a sweet & tangy sauce with Mediterranean seasonings. The steak was tough and very very chewy and it took some effort to cut up the steak strips with a regular knife. The fajitas tasted pretty good, but I prefer steak fajitas cooked with less tangy sauce. The side of Mexican rice was standard and decent. I had enough food for dinner, and passed on the offer for dessert. Usually gets really packed at night so if you're looking for a table I recommend you don't go as late. Also know that at night when it gets full, your server will typically disappear for a long while so don't expect to see them often. Went on Taco Tuesday for Taco's of course. They have a special of 3 tacos and a Margarita for only $11. What a deal, since the house Margarita is $9 alone. They don't have a ground beef taco, only pulled meats (i.e. Chicken, Pork or Beef, no Fish at least for the special). You can get any combination of meats. They double wrap the tacos with 2 soft tortillas and the serving looks good. Unfortunately the meats were fatty and over cooked. I'll go back and re-review them in the future, trying something different to eat. We got there at around 4pm and the place was empty, it was just starting to fill in when we left. We were just driving by and decided to stop in for some lunch.... our little expectations were definitely met and then some! Really awesome cocktails, very friendly and helpful waitstaff and the food was to die for! I got the house chimichanga, my boyfriend had the fajita burrito. When we first looked at the menu we were a but skeptical on the prices, especially for lunch, but then the food came out. Biggest burrito I have ever seen and my chimi will last 2 more meals. We saved room for dessert and ordered the churros which came with 2 dipping sauces, whipped cream and a bunch of cherries. Music is always playing and there's always this very relaxed vibe you get whenever you enter the store. It's cleanliness adds to the overall air to the store as well. And the food? Delicious. Tekila's opened up about six weeks ago and D and I decided to try it tonight. I wish to premise by reminding people that running a restaurant as a Mom and Pop is anything but easy. Sites like Yelp can make or break a place too. When reading reviews one must read for content and not just the rants. Service: We walked in about 6:30pm today. The place was fairly empty but we decided that since it was new we would give it a chance. A place doesn't get a reputation overnight. Paul, one of the main operators was very welcoming and genuine. We were greeted with chips and salsa. The salsa was a rich and tasty red sauce. He wanted to do his best to make us happy and he succeeded. Service was quick, thorough and it came out hot and correctly prepared. One thing I was very impressed with was the low salt content in the food. There was very little and it allowed the real flavor to come though. Food: Dan chose the Cinco de Mayo Enchilada Platter. There were five beautiful enchiladas in three different varieties. Each was delicious but the one that stood out to me was the one topped with mole. This was no ordinary mole. It had a marvelous taste of cinnamon which I have never had the pleasure of tasting before. I had the Dos Amigos Beef Quesadillas. Again really delicious. It was full of tender beef and rich cheese perfectly crispy. Price: Excellent value! Our platters and one beer came to about $26.00. You can't beat that especially when one has leftovers. Improvements: As said before this is a new place. Unlike a chain there are always going to be growing pains. The menu had a few oddities that in my opinion shouldn't be there. It's a Mexican restaurant so to me, Philly rolls, mozzarella sticks, and fries really shouldn't be on the menu. It says to me there's a lack of confidence in the cuisine being served. The beer menu needs improvement. It's mostly bottom shelf like Bud, Miller, Corona, Dos Equis. The beer service was also a thorn that can easily be fixed. I was asked if I wanted my beer in a mug and I said yes. A tall half filled mug came out. This was a huge let down. I realize that it was a full bottle but perception is a lot. The tow issues are as such. If a beer sold as a bottle is brought out the bottle should be present. This shows the customer that they getting a bottle for one thing. Secondly when poured there is no question that the amount of beer in the glass is correct. It may seem small but this tiny thing can truly be the breaker of a meal. All in all Tekila's is great. Considering you can get an entire container for 99 cents at Market Basket, this seemed to be a little pricey. The drinks were good. House wine is 8.50 and a Margherita is 7.00. Food prices are moderate and the portions are generous. By the way, the food is prepared by an excellent Mexican chef and the kitchen staff are from Central America, so the food is authentic and as mentioned, very good. For those who like heat; they have two kinds of habanero sauce on the tables; red and green. The green is hotter but both are excellent! I was torn between three and 4 stars. I'm going to go again and update. The food was for the most part great. Fresh, good ingredients! The quality of the ingredients didn't really seem to match the atmosphere. With the music videos and more of a bar vibe, I would expect more low cost/lower quality bar food. Thankfully that wasn't the case. They had a good menu with lots of options. There was so many items I could have gone with and are interested in going back to try. I sort of thought the prices were kind of high on some items and drinks, but probably because you get the bar strip mall restaurant feel versed fine dinning experience. Compared to other Mexican places in the surrounding towns they definitely have higher prices, but you also likely won't find as much in the seafood department on the other menus.My only critiques on food/drinks would be a bit over cooked on the steak, but otherwise great flavor. My husband didn't love his margarita, he only described it as off, it was an original margarita but I really enjoyed both of mine. I tried two different ones ( dame amores and another one which was a little sweeter/fruitier, both were great! His fajita burrito was enormous, looked awesome and enough for two dinners. Our waitress was attentive, personable and gave great suggestions. She did a nice job checking back and making sure we had napkins etc. she suggested a great appetizer. I would want to go back to check it out during the day. At night, I wouldn't itch to go all the time but it certainly won't be my last time in there. I wouldn't suggest a Friday night for all occasions and all company, not a place my grandparents would enjoy. And I wouldn't bring kids in on a Friday night. I enjoyed it much more than my husband. We went in not really knowing about it. I think he wasn't expecting the music etc. He wasn't a fan of the music videos and the loudness of the band when they came on. My only suggestion would be more songs/videos, one played 3 times while we were there. There was probably only three songs, one of them being the one that played three times. If you are going for a night out to dance or just listen to music it's great! Chips were warm and the salsa was spicy, made with chipotle. It was the best thing I got. I ordered the queso, I really think it was doctored Velveeta - even with an addition of some salsa it was not good. Strike two. I had Carnitas burrito for my meal. It was ok. But my plate was ice cold, soon too was my dinner. Strike three. The waitress was slow to return to my table after delivering dinner and they weren't busy. Honestly, if I wasn't so tired I would have driven the extra few to Cafe Azteca on Common Street in Lawrence. The food is far superior. Next time I will go the extra, so I am not disappointed. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. The food is excellent, the exquisite taste allows you to experience Mexican culture such that the palate is not wanting for more, plus the creativity with wich dish is presented is beyond one's imagination. The atmosphere is unique, where you can spend some quality time. The music is played at a decent volume that allows you to enjoy it as much as keeping a communication with any companion. The service is good. The waiters are always attentive. At first it was a little slow but incredibly improved it in an effective way. I really want to love this place, but it is not quite there yet. I have been twice. The first time, everything was great except the service. The nachos were delicious and I had the fajitas which were yummy and a good size. However, we all filled up on the huge portion (and delicious) of nachos so ended up taking our food home. The waitress was a bit forgetful, but my biggest pet peeve, the nachos came out followed almost immediately by out entrees. I hate that. We went back a couple weeks later to get a couple appetizers on a Saturday night. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a server who was extremely cheerful, but spoke to us in Spanish. When we explained that we did not speak Spanish, her energy immediately disappeared and she actually became rude. She struggled understanding our order, which was nachos with no sour cream and buffalo wings, and never brought out waters. When we asked her a question about a drink, she walked away to get who I believe was the manager who explained that she could not understand us or answer us, so he would be more than happy to help us. I wish he was our server, because he was great! I just find it incredible that a restaurant hires someone who can not communicate with the customers. As for the food, we had unlimited chips and salsa which was okay. I had a burrito however and I'm not kidding when I say it's the best burrito I've had. And I've had a ton of burritos. I will absolutely never come back to this restaurant again. Their service was awful, we waited a few mins just to be seated. Once we were seated it prob took 10 mins for someone to come over and wait on us. It then took 25+ mins to get our food in which she messed up both our orders. I got the complete wrong dish and they messed up the specifications of my friends dish. I needed extra sour cream, that was an additional 1 dollar for a teaspoon. Neither of our orders were corrected or refunded. The food was nothing special I could make it better myself and now we have been sitting here for another 10+ mins after eating waiting for our check which we just had go hunt down another waitress to get. read more
