I go for the poutine. Yum. And gourmet burgers. Small dining room so may have a waitlist.

Love the menu! The vibe, decor and staff is wonderful as well. Never disappoints. Tried many things on menu and it has all been great.

Cocktails and amazing. Decent craft beer selection. Quite a small place so I ca imagine long waits when really busy. We were there Saturday afternoon and it was almost full. Ambience is cool and servers very friendly and attentive. Food was pretty good. Would recommend and would go back again. read more

So, so good! Will definitely be back! Small and cozy inside, food was delish and service on point!

I went to Barrel and Rye today and was greeted by an extremely rude and unfriendly hostess. When I asked for a table for 2 she rudely stated no more tables only bar. When another couple came in and asked for a table for 2 she offered them a table. When I asked to put my name on the wait list she again rudely stated we don't do a waitlist. I've never been treated so horribly in a restaurant especially by someone whose job is to be friendly, greet people and offer assistance. I will never visit or patron this restaurant. read more

Stopped here for late lunch and our first time being out since covid started. Great food and service. Had the old fashioned and it was great. Like that they have they have bar codes to scan to pull up the menus on your phone. (Also have printed menus if you prefer). We had cheese curds, scallops, and pork belly. The strawberry pepper jelly provided with the cheese curds was awesome. The food was cooked perfectly. My favorite parts of the main dishes were the cheddar grit cake, the smoked bacon, and korean bourbon glaze that came with the pork belly and the veggies that came with both dishes. The scallops were great, I just wish there was more (it came with four small scallops). I am not a big fan of pork belly but even I liked theirs and my husband loved it. Overall the the mix of flavors was great. Service was really good. We'll balanced attention with good timing of refilling water and checking in without being overbearing. read more

First meal out in town, and I made a great choice. I sat down right away, there was a spot open at the bar, 6:30pm on a Saturday. It surely helps when you're a party of 1. There was a bit of a wait otherwise to sit at a table. Although the bar top had a great amount of seats, there wasn't too many tables from what I could see. My drink, absolutely loved it. Bourbon milk punch, light and refreshing. Really enjoyed my meal here! I started with the Brie Curds. Keep in mind if you aren't familiar with Brie, it's a soft cheese. So right when you bite it's melted, and doesn't always make it easy for 2 bites per curd! The jalapeño jam is not at all spicy, I'm a sensitive sally too. My meal was delicious, although I think it's considered an app. Seared scallops and andouille sausage. The pea purée was a great combo. Food arrived quick and service was friendly. I will most definitely be back. read more

Nice date place, huge selection of whiskey, bourbons and single malts. Innovative and savory speciality drinks. Very pleasant and gracious wait staff. Limited food menu but what they do have is superb! Duck poutine with duck gravy appetizer, serves 2-3! I had the pot roast grilled cheese with havarti and shallots on (what tasted like) toasted sourdough bread. Arrived at 430pm on a Friday and easily found a seat for 2 but by 530 the place was packed. 1 star off for really loud dinner music, they raised it around 5pm and you can barely hear your friend speaking only a foot away! Asked if they could lower it just a bit but they said no this was something they were "known for" during dinner. Hmmm. Okkk. Other than that, 5 stars! read more

The best tuna poke we've ever tasted! A true party in my mouth! The fried green tomatoes were excellent. Beautiful outdoor seating and fantastic service. Can't wait to return. Returned to Barrel + Rye and was not disappointed. If the Brie burger in not the best in the suburbs it's got to be close. Amazing Brie bite appetizers. Iva eva know with 3 friends this time and they can't wait to return as well. read more

Best restaurant hands down in the tricity area. Unbelievable delicious cocktails, great service and the food! Cant say enough. Everything is fresh and amazingly prepared, a joy to eat. I wish I could eat here everyday. read more

This place is absolute perfect from the ambience to the menu. They had a decent amount of craft beer on tap, an array of whisky and bourbon you'd mostly only see in the city or in actual Kentucky, and a wonderfully unique drink menu. I had the Sacred Sage and my partner had the Sazerac. He thought it was easily one of the best he's ever had. Right up there with NOLA. We sat at the bar and the service was great. Bartenders were always in reach even during peak times and they made sure you were taken care of. The food was impeccable. I cannot wait to go back and try more. The duck pouting is calling me. We had the tomato soup with bri curds, the mac n cheese with Avocado, Jalapeños, tomatoes, and bacon, and lady but not least the bone marrow. I know to most bone marrow sounds shocking and unpleasant, but it is so delicious. They do it perfectly here with the shallots, oil, alongside Argula, tomatoes and bread. Get it. You won't be upset you did! read more

I was really impressed with this place. We came on a yelper's recommendation. We decided to try out some cocktails and appetizers. The cocktails we tried were the old fashioned and the wabi-sabi. Both were well crafted and very satisfying. The old fashioned was probably the best old fashioned I've ever had. App wise we got the duck poutine and the crab hush puppies. Again both were fantastic. Our server was very friendly and helpful with questions we had regarding the menu. We will definitely be coming back to try a meal down the road. If you haven't had a chance to try this place I highly recommend doing so !!! read more

James, Thank you for your response to Alyssa. However, I share her sentiments and was also present during this experience. While we understand COVID19 requires additional precautions and effort by you and your staff, it is a necessary sacrifice that is appreciated by the greater community. Every profession is making significant changes. I would like to add a few things to clarify the situation which you may not have witnessed. First, I personally and specifically asked to talk to you or for your contact information which was denied. Second, the young lady did sneeze excessively and cough, as I was 3ft from her. I'm glad her symptoms improved after we left. Third, while I agree with you it is poor judgement to bring the child in public with those symptoms, assumptions about the cause is only for a physician to decide. Fourth, numerous establishments have created policies that turn away individuals who have current symptoms or have had symptoms in the past 14 days including cough and sneezing; are not wearing masks; or choose to provide them appropriate personal protective equipment. I'm glad you're looking to improve and hope our constructive feedback will fuel new procedures as this will not be the last time something like this happens and COVID19 is not going anywhere soon. One star truly reflects how our experience was completely ruined, yet we still paid for our purchases and tipped staff despite it experience. Ama read more

Shrimp and cheesy grits, people, they serve shrimp and cheesy grits! Wash that down with a Sacred Sage bourbon drink, and life is good. Or meet your friends to nibble on the house charcuterie board and try a whisky or bourbon you've never heard of before. Brown liquor seems to be a specialty of theirs, enjoy yourself! The menu is small and creative and they have daily specials, so you'll have good options. Side note: This is a friendly place but I wouldn't call it a family-style restaurant, Barrel + Rye's menu caters to adult palates. Even if your kids are not picky eaters, they might not enjoy the food as much as you will. read more

I like this place. Small, quaint, but really cool. Busy downtown Geneva. Had lunch here, had a salad. Fresh, and tossed perfectly. My son had a sandwich, which he had no complaints. We tried to get in here one night, it was crammed, so we opted out. Nice bar, and we we will return! read more

Loved the food and the whiskey options. Had a fabulous evening with friends. The whiskey options are amazing and however the food menu is not too large, the options are great and taste good. Make sure to call ahead as it is a smaller place and gets crowded. Even though a small wait, we started with a drink at the bar and got the table in not too long. And won't lower their score for being popular as therefore a wait is sometimes a result of that. read more

Stopped in on Sunday afternoon for wonderful craft cocktails (especially the Pumpkin Up the Jam) and delicious snacks (brie cheese curds, bleu cheese chips, and brisket chili). Kurt our server was friendly and knows his spirits, and Sarah also excellent. Looking forward to next visit. read more

Quality food with interesting options in a hip setting with patio seating when it is warm. The menu is short, however I think that's what allows them to focus on making sure each option is prime. read more

This is my first review over 1 star and mostly cuz I had tres cocktails AND Geneva is A--DORABLE. Seriously. Go to Geneva, IL. In a movie, this would be the idyllic locale for the disappearance of a child. Love it! Anyway, took too long to get a table--they said 20 minutes to be seated and took an hour. Food was delicious and I'll need an Imodium to live with my choices. Anyway, please can I be an elite member. Next time I'll take pictures. read more

Great restaurant. Tried this place for the first time on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm. Place had a good socially distant crowd. We were seated at a corner table. We ordered the barrel burger with Gouda and Parmesan/truffle oil fries and the B+R salad with chicken. Both were perfect. We weren't rushed, we felt safe, the staff was courteous and friendly it was genuinely a lovely experience. The best dining experience we've had since the pandemic began. read more

Their Brie cheese curds and duck poutine are heavenly! The Brie curds are served with a spicy sweet jam that completes the dish. The duck poutine is Smothered in delectable gray and heaps of cheese. I would also recommend the hot wings. They come dry rubbed but full of flavor. Blue cheese dipping sauce is a must. read more

I called ahead for me and my friends around 6:15 in the evening and was told it would be about a 45 minute wait; they took our name down. I left my house at 6:15 to head on over (about a 25 minute drive on most days). Unfortunately the road conditions were awful and I had to contend with snow and icy conditions. Around 6:25 I received a call that our table was ready... I was still about 20 minutes away at that point. I asked if they could save our table since we weren't going to be there until closer to 7 and the man (Dan) said "ok, will do". I got to Barrel + Rye at 6:50ish and our table had been given to the couple in front of us since there was only a "10 minute" time frame that they could save your table for. I was furious. I was originally told there was a 45 minute wait for the table when I called ahead and then 10 minutes later I was told we had a table while neither my friends or I would be able to get to in the 10 minute time frame we had... See the frustrations? So my friends and I waited an extra 40 minutes for the next table to open. Unfortunately Barrel + Rye has no room for standing and we ended up waiting next to the bathrooms which was awkward. Long story short we get to our table, our server was super sweet and gave us a free appetizer of the curds. Despite our frustrations with the table situation, the food was phenomenal. My friends and I also shared a plate of Duck Fried Rice & A House Board. We also each got a Bubbles & Brandy drink--so refreshing! I will definitely be back... Let's just hope by then they change their call-ahead to reservation... read more

Great place to meet friends and have a few craft beers or brown spirits. Good list of craft style beers, but also has other options for beverages. The place is a cocktail lounge with tables that perimeter the bar. Tall tables on the perimeter so eye contact is constant. Wait staff is friendly and on it. Outside seating on the sidewalk when weather permits. Menu is good and diverse too. read more

The food here is amazing! I ordered the southern chicken, side a Mac and cheese and duck poutine. Not only was the food delicious, the southern chicken was AMAZING! We had a friends' get-together lunch at Barrel + Rye recently. The menu offers a nice variety of dishes, from small to large plates. Everyone liked the food. As the name implies, there's a terrific selection of whiskies, as well as a small but varied wine and beer list. We shared a plate of duck poutine; it was appropriately sinful, the fires were crisp enough, but it was just a bit saltier than it needed to be. I had a porchetta sandwich that was also delicious & sinful, if a bit salty. Service was friendly, helpful and attentive. The place is a bit noisy, but we were able to carry on a rudimentary conversation. I'd go back if I were looking for a nice lunch in Geneva, especially on a weekday, when it might be a little quieter. read more

I tried the southern fried chicken sandwich with macaroni and cheese as my side. Everything was delicious! The only reason I rated it a four and not a five is because I'm from the south and there are a couple of other places with an impeccable fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was seasoned nicely and it had a great crunch to it. read more

What a wonderful experience. I couldn't have been more pleased with this place. They do not take RSVPs, so it was a 40 minute wait. We were seated at a small tbl in the corner, the place was packed, so it was very noisy. Our waiter was a doll, and his service was spot on, big kudos. We ordered the potroast grilled cheese and the brie hamburger. A bowl of chili. Everything was fantastic. Here I am two days later and I can still taste that grilled cheese....yummy. We had dessert. Unfortunately I had to cut a star as the desserts were terribly disappointing. We ordered the fresh made doughnuts and the bread pudding. The presentation on the doughnuts was really something, your mouth just watered...but they were hard and dust dry...uuggh. The pudding was just ...meh. For the price I wouldn't do dessert again. But overall for what we spent and how good it was I would be happy to recommend this place to any of my friends. read more

I came here for a birthday lunch with a friend! We were able to call and make a reservation for the patio which was appreciated because many restaurants aren't taking reservations right now. We both ordered the Brie burger and fries which were great! Service was a little on the slower side but not to bad. The key lime pie we had for dessert was also very good. I would definitely return with hopes of trying different items in the menu! read more

Decided to try this place tonight because it was ranked so well and boy, were we disappointed! Very small restaurant with all high top tables except two inside and then outdoor seating. Hubby doesn't like outdoor dining, so we waited for a low top table; however, we had no idea until we were finally seated there were only two low tops total. We were told the wait would be 20 minutes and it was 45 minutes. Wish they would have told us only two tables as we would have gone somewhere else. Ordered soup as an appetizer, never came out. Dinner arrived and I said I ordered soup too. I thought she was going to get it, but it went another 10 minutes when our waitress came back and said, you didn't get your soup, do you still want it. Ahhh...no, not anymore. Our burgers were both overdone from what we ordered. Then, while we were still eating, another waitress walked up and said, can I take your plates away. ARE YOU KIDDING???? We are still eating!!! The other low top table had been done eating when we sat down and continued to visit the entire time we ordered and ate our dinner. When we asked for our check, they finally left and they wanted to give us the bum's rush out? Seriously???? Finally, as we are paying our check, a man walks up to our table and asks us if we are leaving. We both thought it was the manager and when we asked him he said...oh no, he had been waiting "forever" to eat and they were staving and he as hoping we were leaving. OMG....from beginning to end this was not a good experience! Service is not good, food is average at best, and overall it was a major disappointment. The only saving grace about tonight was it was a gorgeous fall evening and I was with the one I love. We won't be back. read more
