And then I found Spokane Barre through Instagram and after taking a free week of classes - $25, amazing offer - I knew this was my tribe. In the words of Ozzy, "Mama, I'm Coming Home." Katie, the owner, has created an incredible barre studio. Each 60-min class is a combination of yoga, Pilates, cardio, barre, sweat, and fun. Yes, your hips will hurt! And your butt and obliques will be sore, but I always have a smile on my face. And I'm a guy in a predominately female space! I honestly don't know why men avoid barre; it's an incredible workout. Each instructor is a little different and the classes are unpredictable. Every fitness welcome is welcome and encouraged and the location is perfect. From the start, Louise struck the perfect balance--she challenged me without pushing too hard and made sure every session felt worthwhile. She is very attuned to who you are as an individual. At the end of each class you really feel like you got a great workout, but during the class it's fun and calming and feels like just hanging out with a friend. She is very good at helping you to focus on your strengths while also being open to making adjustments for each individual. I also love the music that she plays. I recommend Boost Fitness for anyone looking to get some great exercise in a calming and relaxed environment where you can really get to know your instructor and she can really get to know you and your needs as well.

The first evening I was there, Brooke introduced herself, chatted, made sure if I had any questions to just ask. Every staff member I've interacted with has been accommodating, polite and eagerly willing to assist with any demo of equipment I wasn't familiar with. I'm an average gym guy, in shape 66yr old been worked out my whole life, just wanting to keep in shape. This gym is full of younger men and women, some in incredible shape, yet the vibe of the gym made me feel comfortable and not out of place. In my 35yrs in LA I've been to a lot of gyms, I find Chrome far above in quality, equipment, staff attitude and helpfulness. They are a bit pricey but it's a serious gym and well worth it. It's not a premadona gym, it's for people who want to get out of a gym what they put in! For those of you here that have left negative reviews, I'm sure, like most, there's been some bad experiences like any place, some due to ones own expectations and behavior and attitude. Remember; you need a good attitude to get our of life what you expect and are willing to put in, same goes for a gym. suck it up! : )

I started in college where our teacher pushed us to try new things to get me at a level that I can't find anymore. That changed when I went to The Union. The instructor, Jacque, was very energetic, but not to the point where it overpowered the meditation of the yoga. The class was a very fast paced class, but it pushed you to the limit. The small class made it easier to follow the instructor without too many distractions. The class was under a black light, which I haven't seen before. I'm not sure how good it is for your eyes looking at the lights when laying on the mat, but I just closed my eyes. Helped with meditating! Overall, this yoga spot is my new go-to. It's the only one that compares to the yoga I had in college and keeps it challenging so I don't feel like I'm in a class just stretching for an hour. We moved from Portland and I belonged to a Bar studio there, which I loved. Haven't done anything since, except try to do yoga videos on Amazon (it's not the same as going to a class, mostly because I have a hard time keeping myself focused and motivated). I attended my second class at YogaJoy today (PiYo with Kimmie) and it rocked. Kimmie is such a fantastic, enthusiastic, and helpful instructor (I also took her Buti Yoga class last week - such a fun class!). The other students in the class were super nice, too, as well as everyone else working at the studio (I like nice people - I am immediately turned off by anyone snobbish, which has not been the case here). The location of this studio works for me (there's literally nothing else closer except maybe a gym in Deer Park). Also - they offer childcare. What?! That's amazing. (I have a 2 and a 4 year old.)
