I have been trying to get into yoga for years and have never found a space I enjoy. The Mat is the first studio where I want to go back. The floors are great for me because they are covered in a firm mat. This way the floors a firm enough to support you through poses, but give a little to help my knees and other sensitive areas like my tail bone. The studio has accessories like blocks and straps available so that you don't need to bring them. The cleaning solution smells wonderful, like eucalyptus, so the studio smells more like a spa and less like a gym. They have multiple classes including restorative, power, and intro to yoga. The studio offers "hot yoga", but not Bikhram hot. This is great because it keeps my muscles warm without making me sick with heat. It is a small studio, so the instructors are able to give each student personal attention. The instructors watch your form, and help motivate you to move on to the next level when you are ready. They also support beginners and those of us with strength or flexibility limitations with the modified poses and remind the class that yoga is a personal practice, not a competition. This studio is great for all levels, and the different classes allow you to relax or get a butt kicking workout. The students are all very friendly as well, and I don't not feel judged. It is a welcoming environment and I actually enjoy yoga finally.

She did an amazing job of explaining the type of yoga, the process, what the expectations and reality are, making me feel safe in my environment. I started in college where our teacher pushed us to try new things to get me at a level that I can't find anymore. That changed when I went to The Union. The instructor, Jacque, was very energetic, but not to the point where it overpowered the meditation of the yoga. The class was a very fast paced class, but it pushed you to the limit. The small class made it easier to follow the instructor without too many distractions. The class was under a black light, which I haven't seen before. I'm not sure how good it is for your eyes looking at the lights when laying on the mat, but I just closed my eyes. Helped with meditating! Overall, this yoga spot is my new go-to. It's the only one that compares to the yoga I had in college and keeps it challenging so I don't feel like I'm in a class just stretching for an hour.
