Our room wasn't ready until after 4 PM, and when we were finally placed, it was directly above the ballroom hosting the New Year's Eve party. The noise was relentless for hours and made it impossible for our children to sleep. After multiple calls to the front desk, I spoke with the manager, Thea Ritchey, who told us the hotel "always throws a New Year's Eve party," was fully booked, and there was nothing she could do. Her suggestion was essentially "if you can't beat them, join them." With no resolution offered, we packed up our kids and drove over three hours back to Boston in snowy conditions that night. One stay was enough to end a family tradition--we won't be returning.

Set off by itself a short walk from the inn, the schoolhouse offers complete privacy in a very romantic setting. Really nice bathroom, too. We stayed in the same room 2 years ago and at that time a continental breakfast was included. This year, a made to order breakfast for $12 pp was offered instead, which was delicious and very filling before a day of skiing at nearby Burke Mt. The cabins are also a bit too close together so you can hear people talking all around if they have the windows open. The fire pit was perfect and right on the little stream behind the cabin. I think next time we will try to rent one of the cabins on the other side of the bridge just for a little more privacy and quite. Inside the cabin I really liked whatever Incense they had burned before we got there and that they had everything we needed in the kitchen. One issue was that the dishes were not clean when we got there so we had to wash a few before using. Also in the bedroom one of the screens was not properly attached on the bottom so when we opened the window we ended up getting a lot of flies and mosquitos inside. The bathroom was a bit tiny but i expected this with such small cabins. The walls in the shower are not attached to the wall though so do not lean on them or you could break or tip it to the tip (couldn't tip it over though). Main problem with the bathroom is that after a hot shower and you open the door it sets the fire alarm off that right outside the door even if you had the window open to let the steam out. He was definitely not happy being woken up at 6am because I wake early. All in all I would stay again but I would defiantly pick one of the back cabins over the front one we stayed in.

Carol called us to make sure we were making it up ok. When we arrived at Carlson's Lodge Carol met us to check us in. We hadn't eaten yet and she called a nearby restaurant to see if they could still take us. She also helped us plan our entire day for the next day. She had really good suggestions of different hikes we could do in our time frame. She then took us to our room which had a door code instead of a key which I really liked. She also said that one bed was firm and one bed was plush. This place was perfect for our one night stay. The only thing I would note is there is not a fridge in the room. The lodge was so close to Mt. Willard, the Cog Railway, the Mt Washington Hotel and others. It was a very convenient location and Carol made our stay so much better, would definitely stay again!
